I got to visit it last year. There’s so much that they include that really shows the passion like the apology letter saying “Sorry that we couldn’t make it walk” and a wall of notes left by visitors. It was also a cool place for my dad and I to bond over as I was excited because of my love of anime and he was excited by engineering needed to build it.
if its possible since there are a lot of gundams, they can try to have a gundam built differently in every city or place...like building the gunpla models
I think that would be an awesome idea if they display it on the country side like a museum since most of the time on the series that's where it usually takes place.
I am so grateful I was able to go Japan last summer. I recently got into gunpla and on a whim decided to include the Yokohama site in my itinerary. I did not regret it at all. Such a magnificent feat of engineering. Easily one of the coolest things I’ve ever witnessed.
I'm heading to Japan in march and by the time I'm in Tokyo, I'll still be able to see the Gundam Factory. I did see the older Gundam model in Odaiba in 2016.
I'm a fan in America. These shows were taking off here in my late teens, so it's a part of our culture here too. I think it's a bit cheesy, but I enjoy it at face value. Cheers and thanks for the video.
Luckily I managed to visit on November 2023. I had missed the RX-79-02 in Diver City but I watched the Unicorn when I went. Sadly I only managed to get tickets for an odd day as the following day was a holiday and it was the same day I was north of Tokyo so I had to go out of my way and then go back up so I missed Chinatown. This November I will try to visit Chinatown. Also below the big tower there is a pretty large mall with a bunch of nice shops. I tried going to the Noodle cup museum that is a few meters across from it but I couldn't manage to fit it in my schedule.
The Cup Noodles museum is worth visiting. Yokohama’s Chinatown is probably the cleanest chinatown in the world, and one of the corner shops sells delicious huge Chinese buns, however I’d say you can skip it if you don’t have the time. I’d rather visit the Toy Museum or spend more time at Miraikan area.
We visited last year and also saw the one in Diver City. Really worth a visit. Recommend you come and pick up the tickets early in the day and get a view from the outside and get the tickets for sunset. Seeing it lights up after dark is amazing. We visited the one in Fukuoka just 2 weeks ago. Looks great but the one in Yokohama is definitely better. Hope they will build another one somewhere else in Japan soon.
I have 5 kids and I keep my son off social media. Too many weirdos . I have never got into GUNDUM But maybe moving the robot to a part of Japan that needs some exposure would be good. I like anime but GUNDUM not so much. you both are doing a great job by keeping Leo off of social media and only showing him here and there.
@@onlyinjapanGOI heard a rumor recently that the statute in Yokohama might get moved to Osaka for the World Expo next year. Do you know anything about that?
I think they should build a place for it, it's obviously a long time tourist attraction. Coming from a tourist state myself (Florida) you can't get rid of a attraction unless you make it better. This type you could improve because technology is constantly changing. This also encourages younger people to enter this type of work.
Gutted it's going. It will be a year or so before my 2nd visit since 2008. I'm 58 now but for decades have been into Manga and Anime (and Japan). Still a kid inside, so I love the way Japan incorporates these things into everyday culture. It wouldn't work anywhere else. I'm saving an excess of cash so I can travel light, buy what I need there and have a base in Tokyo and travel around not worrying about staying overnight elsewhere if I feel like it, rather than being tied down to hotel schedules in multiple places. Basically not worry how I spend as it may be the last time I can afford it as flights alone from UK are pricey if you want a direct flight. Last time Sony paid and we were their guests, as I won a photographic comp with them. That's a whole other story! Free DSLR, business class flight, real Geisha dance/company etc. However not looking forward to the extra tourism as 2008 in Akihabara I saw few tourists, even the Golden Temple was a breeze.
I’m so glad you wrote because I think organizers will see how popular this is and encourage them to make a bigger and better one! I think it brings out imagination to life!
Me and my wife are actually going there next week.. big fan of the Gundam series and it's gunpla line. I'm so glad that I'll be able to see the RX-78-2 before they take it down.
I was lucky enough to visit the Gundam Factory in May 2023 and was able to get Platform Tickets as well. It was an amazing thing to see. When the Show began it started raining like crazy but that, together with the Fog, just added to the Show. I am very sad to see it go.
So thankful I was able to go see it back in January 2023! Really sad its gotta go though, I wanted my cousins who also love Gundam like me to see it as well. On the bright side the Unicorn in Odaiba and Nu in Fukuoka will still be here at least albeit not fully moveable like the RX78.
We only managed to see it because they extended it another year and it was our 7 year old son's birthday gift to go there. A giant robot, with moving parts, music and audio to highlight the actions...it was the highlight of his trip and we are glad we went. He was out there every time it moved. Robotics firms in Japan have been working on great things with these kinds of mobile suits for utility use like the ARCHAX. It is fun to see.
John, thank you for sharing this update video of the status of the Gundam Factory in Yokohama. Also, nice to know that you have the great insight in parenthood. Keep up the great works! You definitely are the ambassador of Japan! ガンバ~👍
Hey John thanks for heading out there for those of us who can’t make it over before it’s gone. I visited Yokohama 20 years ago (specifically that same area at the waterfront!) and even though I’ve been back to Japan many times, I haven’t found the time to make it back over there. Even though I’ll miss the Gundam attraction, on my next trip I plan on revisiting Yokohama and making the same walking route I took 20 years ago! Cheers buddy!
Luckily i visited Gundam end of Jan this year. I had a great experience watching the real size gundam move so smooth. I went to the little museum and to read all the comments from the engineers,i can feel how they are so proud making the impossible become possible.
yeah, i was hopeful it would get another year extension. i wanted to stop by in july. oh well, i can always go around yokohama Chinatown instead. there's also the nu gundam statue in fukuoka. but my schedule doesnt allow me to do another half country trip just for it. maybe 2026.
Last March we caught our first glimpse of the Gundam Factory while standing on the deck of the permanently moored Hikawa Maru in Yokohama Harbor just outside of Yamashita Park. At that point the robot was inside its cage. Then later we were amazed to see it had moved out of the cage. We return to Yokohama next month and seeing how much more the robot can do from your videos has me toying with fitting a close-up visit into our schedule. We will be traveling with friends visiting Japan for the first time and together boarding the Diamond Princess there in Yokohama. It would be fun to surprise them with tickets to the Gundam Factory for an unexpected addition to their first Japan experience. Thanks for letting us know tickets can be acquired online. Dale in Alaska.
I got to visit it. One of the highlights of the trip. I never really watched Gundam but they go into the engineering of building this and it was no small feat. I also enjoyed the area's Chinatown.
We had an opportunity to visit the Gundam Factory last August and it was awesome. It was worth the almost one hour walk from the train station where we got off of. I highly recommend it. So sad it's ending.
Hi John... Would like to see how Akihabara has changed since the last update... What's next coming and such...! - about arcades n game centres, old shops, buildings coming and going, computers to anime to maid cafes.. and what's up! A walk in Akihabara would be fantastic.. Thanks for all the videos and live streams! :)
Went there July last year with my son. He heard that it's closing soon. So much work was put into it. Glad we're able to visit. Also saw the one in Odaiba.
We've been planning on going while in Yokohama. Will be there March 20-22. thanks for the video; maybe better playing it safe and buying a ticket ahead of time. I'm so glad we are getting to see it just in the nick of time.
When your kid grows he will have so many videos and this one. Yesterday was pictures. Now we have the opportunity to watch videos and experience that memories. Love your channel always. Blessings!
I was fortunate to go with wifey last year in November and now am going back next month with the rest of the family highly recommended even if your not a Gundam fan it’s something amazing to see in person
Likely the excitement of going up the scaffolding, is partly from classic Gundam art images, in which just the bust, or head of the mecha is shown in the background, with the tiny pilots and workers in front, on a high platoform of the factory. Being able to recreate those kind of images with yourself on a factory scaffold, and a REAL Gundam head and chest behind you, has got to be exciting for many fans.
It’s the other way around, Adi Granov’s redesign of Iron Man suit was largely inspired by Japanese mecha, especially the legs. And you can tell his illustration was influential for the MCU’s version.
I got tickets last week for myself and my nephew who's in Yokohama for his studies. This will be my third visit to Japan and my second to Yokohama. I visited the Ramen Museum and dined at a store that served gluten-free ramen. Also bought gluten-free ramen kit and handkerchiefs made in Japan for my mother, in-law and myself. 😊
My heart sank, thought it was closing on 2/29. Was there last week but I didn’t go inside because it too cloudy and windy. Now I’ll have to plan to go ASAP. Thanks for the heads up.
Hi John, my wife and I just got back home from Japan and I want to thank you for all your videos. If I don’t see your Gundam video, I probably would have miss it. This was our first trip to Japan and our plan was to just stay in Narita to just get the fell on how to use the rail system and get around. We decided to just go for it and we made it in about 45 mins from Shinagawa. We also walked to China Town and the food there is amazing. Again, thanks Asa from Hawaii (Oahu)
Went there last December, and after reading the stuff inside the exhibition, there are very subtle hints that they'll probably do something new for the next big anniversary of Gundam. Also went up to the platforms to watch the show, but honestly, the view from below is better. It's still worth it of you are a big fan and just want to be closer to it.
I've never followed gundam closely but i think this gundam needs to be declared a cultural monument and at least be in a museum because it really is a milestone that put japan on the map
Let's me just say I'm very upset... Japan is on my bucket list one day but would have loved to have seen it in person. as a Gundam fan in rural America it's really hard to get Gundam figures so everything is online. Very envy of everyone in Japan and Asian countries that can get gundams figures easier especially the paints you can't get over in the states well. As always thanks for the upload of your part of the world.
I agree, I do give them credit for keeping it a few years lingering than planned so people could see it but WE hope they build a bigger and better one next. The sky’s the limit - or let’s say SPACE and BEYOND 🛸
As a Gundam fan, I am so happy that I was able to visit all the Gundam statues (Yokohama, Odaiba and Fukuoka) in Japan during my trip last December. I'm hoping that the Yokohama Gundam either gets an upgrade or is replaced by a new Gundam !
I got a chance to e there last September and it is quite an experience. I love Gundam but even if you’re not a fan You’ll still appreciate its presence in this Life Size form. It’s truly an amazing site to see.
I very much regret not going to Japan to see this. But Gundam is still going strong and pulling in hundreds of millions of dollars every year. I'm sure they will build another, similar robot somewhere else. Gundam is such a massive franchise, comparable to Star Wars and Star Trek in the west, that they could build a whole, permanent theme park dedicated to it. I want a life-sized Zaku to go with the the life-sized Gundams. Or Bandai could build a mecha park since Sunrise (the studio that makes all the Gundam shows and subsidiary of Bandai) has produced a ton of mecha shows throughout the past 50 years.
I have a video on my channel from Yokohama, primarily from the Gundam Factory Yokohama. I visited February 2023 and absolutely loved it. Such a unique experience that I wish more of my friends got to experience
Whoa!!! I did not know about this!!! I would have loved to see this but I have no plans to visit Japan soon. Please make a video of it before it goes away. 🙋♀️
I went to Japan last November to visit the Gundam Factory Yokohama just because they announced the closing of it and I had never been.Realized I would regret not seeing it for the rest of my life!
I went in November as well, rode all the way to Yokohama, walked in the rain from the station to the factory... Only to find it closed on Tuesdays. Blerg. Took some far away photos then went to China Town.
My first trip on Nov 2022 was pretty haphazard, with a one night stay in Yokohama because why not. Took the train and walked all the way to the Gundam Factory while checking out the Osanbashi Pier as well just because. Good thing I got a glimpse of the big Gundam before it's decommissioned in April.
If you get the chance to go before it closes, make sure to stay after the first part. There is a pause between the Gundam coming out and then going back in. People were visibly emotional when they were playing “Meguriai” at the end.
was there just 2ish weeks ago! It was awesome! bought some goods~~~ I got the ticket to go up because I mean why not? So have a cool selfie standing next to it's head. Literally paid the ticket to go up just for that selfie shot otherwise there's no need to go up honestly. It's such a shame that it has to go.
As a long time Gundam fan, I really wish that they just make it a statue so that everyone would see it in the future even if it’s not moving. Maybe add a video or a small diorama (which exists in a museum somewhere) of it moving! Also, small tidbit, in one of the anime (Gundam Build Divers: Re-Rise), they actually feature Yokohama with the Aile Strike Gundam in front of the Red Brick warehouses. Maybe they have that in the plans for the future?
I went there last September. It was terribly hot, I almost fainted while waiting my turn to go to the upper deck... everybody was perfectly aligned by the members of the staff right at the bottom of the robot: 11 AM, concrete pavement, direct sunlight, 40° C and 90% of humidity... I couldn't enjoy the moment at its best
Yokohama is great, I bought a couple of kits at the Gundam factory site. It also has a beautiful cherry blossom walk and shopping district. My Kushitani motorcycle jacket came from their Yokohama store.
I’m with you. Not a fan of manga or anime. Still, it’s cool! Japanese culture is my culture and I really miss it when I go back to Hawaii. Good news, my husband and I will be there in May and November!
Aloha John. I'm saddened to hear that this will be closing soon. I haven't been able to visit but was hoping to do so on my next visit to Japan but looks like I won't have the chance now. Really appreciate the heads up on this.
Way back 2020, when I was working at home, a meme from FB said that "while the world fighting covid19 - the Japanese are working to create a real life size gundam, then a picture of Japanese building the gundam. For me they shouldn't remove it as I'm looking at this as a signs of our struggles during the pandemic and how we defeat it. I hope I've seen this in person as it is always reminds me how lucky I'm leaving at this time.❤
back when Gundam cafes were still around in 2019, i didnt even go into either one. then the cafes shut down. covid hit and Yokohama gundam factory was a thing. finally saw this gundam in 2022 and made sure to go to the gundam cafe. missed visiting either the 2 old cafes in Odaiba and akihabara station area... im not sure if that back support is just aesthetically pleasing but i didnt question the presense of the "fog" coming from its feet,... you might be onto something. while on this topic, who said the the OG gundam, unicorn and RX-93ff ν Gundam are just static models??? i wont lie, i had some small tears of joy and some emotions as i caught first glimpse of the Gundam factory. i did completely forget they had Gundam manhole covers in the area.........
Sad moment, I hoped it wouldn't get taken down. I wanted to see it one day. Coolest attraction. I think it would be great if they just made a different model Gundam and replace it and keep switching out every couple of years. They have so many different Gundam mechs that could pick from and make them do different things.
I was going to get to see it when I finally made it to Japan. If they really want to keep it, maybe they can see about moving it to the Animation Park in Awaji, Hyogo, Japan.
@@onlyinjapanGO that’s exactly what I’m hoping for ,so that in few years later when I return to Japan again I can experience something new . Just want to say that your vlogs and few more UA-camrs really helped me plan my trip to Japan last year , it was best holidays I ever had with my wife. Thanks a lot 😁
Thanks for the info John but I don’t think I’ll make it in time to see Giant Gundam I really want to but at least you did this Live Video and I can see and remember him always very much appreciated 🤝🤝🤝
Last year in March, I was thinking of visiting Gundam Factory in 2024. But once I knew they're going to bring it down in 2024, straight away i told my wife "Book 2 flight tickets. We're going to Japan". And November last year, we managed to visit RX78-2f00 in person. It was a fantastic expe4ience
Tsukuda is a beautiful place, John. Tsukudakobashi Bridge over looking the Canal…. just so tranquil and peaceful. 😊 👀Maybe when Leo grows up he can feature his own UA-cam Channel and follow in your footsteps, carrying on the legacy of his Father but in his own version! 👍 Just imagine…. “Only in Japan - Leo Daub”!!! 😱🤗
Luckily Ive seen the unicorn one in Odaiba back a few years ago. Huge Gundam fan. Would have liked to see this one IRL too buts fine haha. I believe theres also another one in Fukuoka
I visited it last May. Paying the 1650 yen to get in is definitely worth it, but your mileage will definitely vary paying twice that again for access to the gantry. For the die-hard Gundam fans, it might be worth it, but you're stuck up between the two gantry layers for an hour with no seats and no toilets, and in close quarters with a couple of dozen others. Admission including the gantry access adds up to around 5,000 yen, so keep that in mind.
My husband and I had the privilege of visiting the statue at the end of last November. We will never forget our visit. It was so awesome! 😊
Its so sad for me the moment I heard this news in January, as a Gundam hard fans. So many things were closed that I haven’t experienced it yet.
Nothing in life is guaranteed! Get out there and chase your dreams already before it’s too late!
Same here. Feels bad to not being able to experience something you always wanted to.

Thank you for the update John!
There! Bought tickets for march 14! First and last time, i will miss it after
Whoa!!! I did not know about this!!! I would have loved to see this but I have no plans to visit Japan soon. Please make a video of it before it goes away. 🙋♀️
I’m took a lot of background footage on it for a later Robot episode ;)
@@onlyinjapanGO A robot episode??? Omg!!! Something to look forward too. ♥️
Diver City’s original Gundam was the RX-78. And it moves a bit with light up, smoke and Amuro’s voice from the anime!
Hopefully they actually build it FULLY functional. Imagine the amount of help in terms of work you can get done with it.
That's sad I used to do my morning walk past this when I lived closer. Guess I should go try to see it again.
I managed to visit it last December. Was amazing.
Oh damn, didn't know it was still up when I visited Yokohama last year, I thought it had ended already before.
One of the reasons my Grandson and I visited Japan August 2023
I feel lucky to have witnessed it before it goes. I really hope they bring it back at some point.
Visited in September 2023 ... glad I did
As a long time Gundam fan, I really wish that they just make it a statue so that everyone would see it in the future even if it’s not moving.
I’m glad I got to see it a couple months ago, it was an experience especially when I was up there and it was pouring hard 😂
Much appreciation for the video. Sad to see Gramps go!
YES!!! they should move it to Tsukuba! one of my favorite places in Japan.
Love when they do some fun stuff and go all out.
Is it close to where the cruise line docks?
Yokohama is great, I bought a couple of kits at the Gundam factory site. It also has a beautiful cherry blossom walk and shopping district. My Kushitani motorcycle jacket came from their Yokohama store.
I just saw it a few days ago, going at dusk is amazing the lights and show etc are great
I’m with you. Not a fan of manga or anime. Still, it’s cool! Japanese culture is my culture and I really miss it when I go back to Hawaii. Good news, my husband and I will be there in May and November!
Glad I got to see this in November I’d love to see them set it up elsewhere to spread the tourism love to areas not normally travelled.
I hope I've seen this in person as it is always reminds me how lucky I'm leaving at this time.❤
back when Gundam cafes were still around in 2019, i didnt even go into either one. then the cafes shut down. covid hit and Yokohama gundam factory was a thing. finally saw this gundam in 2022 and made sure to go to the gundam cafe. missed visiting either the 2 old cafes in Odaiba and akihabara station area... im not sure if that back support is just aesthetically pleasing but i didnt question the presense of the "fog" coming from its feet,... you might be onto something. while on this topic, who said the the OG gundam, unicorn and RX-93ff ν Gundam are just static models??? i wont lie, i had some small tears of joy and some emotions as i caught first glimpse of the Gundam factory. i did completely forget they had Gundam manhole covers in the area.........
dang next business trip to japan is mid april. I was considering take the train down from Tsukuba on the weekend to check it out
I'm so happy that I got to see this a few weeks ago! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Sad moment, I hoped it wouldn't get taken down. I wanted to see it one day. Coolest attraction.
I think it would be great if they just made a different model Gundam and replace it and keep switching out every couple of years. They have so many different Gundam mechs that could pick from and make them do different things.
I really hope they can do something with the concept! I visited this last year and it was amazing! A bit boring, but still majestic!
this would be cool to experience in hi-def VR
Hopefully they Bring something better to that spot
Another Gundam Suit ❤
I was going to get to see it when I finally made it to Japan. If they really want to keep it, maybe they can see about moving it to the Animation Park in Awaji, Hyogo, Japan.
We were there last week!! I actually prefer staying in Yokohama. Place is more laid back compared to Tokyo. Visit gundam at night. Much more magical.
I visited it on October 2023 , to me it was worth every penny .
It’s sad they are closing it
Yeah, I hope they do something BIGGER somewhere else, soon! 🤖
I went to see it in October 22 then they extended shortly afterwards, it was a magic and great experience to see it
It's really sad 😔 Luckily I was able to see it and experience it last April as well as the other 2 in Odaiba, in 2016 and 2019.
Loved seeing it in September really enjoyed it
Tsukuda is a beautiful place, John. Tsukudakobashi Bridge over looking the Canal…. just so tranquil and peaceful. 😊
👀Maybe when Leo grows up he can feature his own UA-cam Channel and follow in your footsteps, carrying on the legacy of his Father but in his own version! 👍
Just imagine…. “Only in Japan - Leo Daub”!!! 😱🤗
Got to go there in October last year. Good thing I went!
Luckily Ive seen the unicorn one in Odaiba back a few years ago. Huge Gundam fan. Would have liked to see this one IRL too buts fine haha. I believe theres also another one in Fukuoka
And of course I've been a Gundam fan since 1979 and I'm going to Japan for the first time in October. Damn. :(
I visited it last May.
