@@petouser As long as it was shot in film (i.e. with a film camera), you can go even further back to the '70s and it would look like as if it was shot yesterday with the people driving and wearing weird looking cars and clothes.
I can see how John had such success. First appearance but he seemed mellow and at home right away. Couldn't be happier you're still out here serving up videos, John. :)
This episode had so much heart; maybe it's the talking to actual locals, the private eye part. It felt so genuine. That French woman is truly living her best life I can tell.
Thanks for putting this up. I remember the show. Watched a whole lot of NHK back then and loved the Tokyo Eye show. Still do. That show brought you to my attention.
Wow! I never watch this Tokyo Eye. Interesting format too! In 2009 was my first trip in Japan too, and I remember after watch just a few year my 2009 photos I see some I took at Shibuya crossing, and you were there with NHK team filming one of the Tokyo Eye, good souvenir.
I Googled “Tokyo Eye” and it stated the show ran between 2006 to 2022. John Daub appeared in 20 episodes and Jennifer Julien appeared in 6 episodes. I thought perhaps Peter would have done a few episodes but he did not.I really enjoyed watching this. My favourite one is still with John and Jennifer appearing in the same episode 😊
Thanks to his upbeat vibe, sharp wit, and amazing personality, John has become the ultimate daily bridge between Japan and fans of Japanese culture everywhere. Thank you, John, for bringing daily joy and your ever-bright smile!
GREAT SCOTT! John, you getting younger and younger! From your previous Tokyo Eye 2011 video posting to now your first debut in 2009! Its great a look back at your hay days in reporting with Tokyo Eye. :)
I did one segment, My Private Tokyo in episode #101 in 2008 but this was the first one as a studio reporter. Before UA-cam was really a thing, making these was the blueprint for OiJ with info etc.
@@onlyinjapanGO Ah, gotcha John. Indeed 2009 as your first studio appearance with NHK's Tokyo Eye. Now you mentioned "My Private Tokyo ep. 101" as a segment you have done, am curious on it and shall try to find it on UA-cam to check it out. :)
Hey I remember now I used to peak at this back in 2009 as a little kid. I swore when I first found your channel I was like "Why do I know him from somewhere?"
Happy to see footage of how Japan was when i first visited. The gradual changes, be them big or small, somehow make todays Japan look and feel different. Not saying better or worse, just… different. And yet you notice the things that are still the same as „back then“ and that me fell in love with Japan.
John this brings back memories, also the flute and only in japan intro, midnight ramen runs, 7/11 midnight runs, pork, rice, eggs yudon snacking, this was just right
John, did you save the skates for Leo? I lived in Okinawa for five years and enjoy revisiting Japan periodically. I can't help but be impressed that after the same period of time you found yourself on NHK helping non-Japanese appreciate what the country has to offer. If we ever cross paths, I'd like to sit down with you and I'll buy the first round (hint, I'll be in Sapporo for the snow fest in 2025).
@@onlyinjapanGO I’ve been watching OiJ for a while, and my wife sometimes catches them with me. As we’re watching this she said the same thing: you sound nearly the same!
This episode was filled with joy and laughs, an absolute blast, really enjoyed it. I need that Katsuobushi Grinder!!! 👌 Ameyokocho, Let’s Go! 👍 -“Ne, Doku iku no?” “Ameyokocho da yo!” -“Yappare!” ☺️
Aloha 🤙 from Honolulu!!! Could you please put up some more retro Johniffer videos from you two back in the day 🙏. I know that there's a couple more out there on UA-cam of you and Jennifer together.
John you should film future videos in the same style with the same style camera lenses so You can make Japanese retro style reviews for the modern era. I think that would be incredible
The very first time I saw John Daub... a staged scene on Tokyo Eye many many years ago in which he and another dude competed in courting a lady on a cruise and John got left out. Poor John. I related😂
That was a constant theme, I get screwed and end up alone LOL I didn't write the scripts ... but there were scripts and well, I played along and tried to have some fun.
@@onlyinjapanGO Well, as a result, I still remember you, but for the life of me, I can't remember who the other two actors where. And I watched literally every episode of Tokyo Eye. Boy, I miss it. It played an important role in growing my love for Tokyo before my work started bringing me there 3 months a year. I felt at home the first time I set foot out of the plane. 🤗
Fall 2009 was my freshman year in College....I feel like that was not that long ago but looking back it kind of is 😅 Man...I wish I had the opportunity to visit Japan back then well before the tourist boom that japan has now. I was fortunate to visit Japan in 2020 just before pandemic hit which was great because it kept 99% of the tourists home. I basically saw almost no tourists on that trip. But still early 2000s japan wouldve been so fun to experience 😊

2009 is not even that far back, but the video feels like 1995. I truly take for granted how everything is at least 720p nowadays.
On the contrary, there are film movies from the 90s that look astonoshing even today.
@petouser I agree. I should say I mean videos captured by the average citizen and not a studio.

Now we have the origin story of you and the guy that sells candy. Loving these throwback vids, thanks
John was a natural from the start. He should be the official foreign ambassador for all of Japan!
What an awesome snap shot in time. Thanks for sharing these John, I love seeing old footage like this.
Thanks for putting these up, John. I still know very little about your past on-air career, so seeing things like these is pretty interesting.
Keep 'em coming, John. Get the ramen episode you did with Kevin Rooney up, that was brilliantly entertaining!!!
'Hi, I am John Daub from New York and living in Tokyo for FIVE years now". Seem like 500 years ago!!
Right, I moved to Tokyo after 7 years in smaller cities and countryside in 2004.
Love these. Thanks John

It’s crazy how much good NHK content there is that will never get seen. Lunch on was my fav. 😊
Through the free NHK World app you can still see Lunch On, at any time. It’s one of my favourites, too.

Discounts on everything , Ameyoko sounds my kind of place 😎Thank you for sharing this 🙂👍!!!
When 2009 starts looking like 1999 😢😢😢
Japan is living in the year 2000 since 40 years
2009, i was busy watching korean shows and kpop when I could have travelled japan already. 😂
John lookin’ like a Backstreet Boy.
Why dont shows looks like this anymore??
If I had to take a wild guess, it was probably the switch to digital programming
I mean more of the designing/editing of these shows.

JOHN That is not the only program you have bin in on NHK.
The wise man from the NHK, Guru John, in his Ameyoko monastic outfit. Looks like a sage.
If I'm not mistaken, John's outfit in this episode is also on an Only In Japan Discord emoji? 😄
2009 was the year i just got back to Japan from the US after graduating from college.
Seems such a more energetic time, really. :)
Nice! I hope we get to see the laser trap episode with secret agent John. Tokyo eye 2020 Season 3 episode 36 A deeper Tokyo experience.
Going to have to check what the prices are like today... Melon on a stick here I come!
Let me, let us know what you find.
4 strawberries on a stick for 100 yen is definitely unheard of now. More like 800 yen for 3 strawberries on a stick.
I love the game show theme music when they’re shopping
major throwback!
