We already have an in-game AI companion for Minecraft, it's called the Poisonous Potato Plant
Granted it only appeared in 1 snapshot, but with the AI bubble showing no signs of popping, I'm sure it'll be merged into vanilla any update now...
Also, looking forward to the video podcast!

Looking forward to the new video changes. I wonder if fixing the portal changes is part of the rebalance of the villager trade mechanics to make it easier to move villagers from one biome to another.

An interesting example of AI playing Minecraft is Neuro-sama, who had a Minecraft "module" which originally took the very formulaic play pattern of punch a tree, make tools, then dig straight down and branch mine (it was also playing pre-1.18 so it would be branch mining at Y=5 or so). It was supposed to be able to adapt its play pattern (for instance, by learning that digging straight down isn't a good idea) but for some reason this didn't work, however I understand Neuro ended up with a more sophisticated Minecraft model so it might have been fixed or replaced. Either way, it's a really interesting and impressive feat in its own way and I think this is the kind of thing to expect from an AI multiplayer buddy.
What I don't think it will be is what Joel is picturing, particularly if you're expecting it to form useful suggestions ex nihilo. If your spec was to make a helper companion, you could fake that kind of thing by preloading it with useful facts (either directly from the wiki or separately prepared by Mojang) but if you wanted to set an LLM on the game alone and expect it to figure out good advice for a human player you could either calibrate it to say nothing relevant ever or to mention hundreds of unimportant things with the occasional diamond in the rough - there'd be no possible middle ground without putting one's finger on the scale. It's easy to go from that ChatGPT clip and imagine it being extrapolated to a fully automated in-game advice robot but it's not a simple extrapolation, there's a qualitative barrier there that I'm personally sceptical that LLM-based AI is wired to even theoretically pass. Large Language Models are just that, models of language, and working in gameplay and the kinds of reasoning human players are expected to make in intuiting Minecraft mechanics is simply not what they're designed to do.

The example with the use case of AI as a buddy watching over you and warning you of creepers. I think a lot of creative solutions came through the case, that humans are inattentive often. I think about the snowman watch tower for example. It can be cool but I also see the point that there is less invention to be made for specific cases. Humans building themselfes ingame help is very creative. Will it replace it? Or maybe add new ways of creativity instead?

I loved this episode on AI and it's usage in the game of Minecraft. Playing an AI in games like chess is that EVERY move can be loaded into a database and then the computer can narrow the possibilities of moves until you lose the game. I play a lot of strategy games (usually grand strategy or world wide strategy games) and how I usually end up winning is to overload the computer. The computer doesn't seem to get that concept in those games ....... yet. The usage of AI in Minecraft would be more like having a pet or limited capability companion in the game. The problem is that the AI doesn't really learn how to work with you to be more productive in the game, the AI wants to do things as well and will manipulate you into doing that thing that it wants to do. If you take out the adaptive portions of the AI then it's really no longer an AI. It's an equivalent to a bot or something like that.
I don't think that I would like playing with an AI. I prefer the human interaction to be honest. I do like the voice interaction with something like an alexa to learn more about the game and I have started using my alexa for this use.
