@DazzleMonroe thank you it’s not just me not even the full minute! His arrogance is sickening to watch! I wonder how many people have been given a wrong diagnosis by him. Ren ended up so ill because of wrong diagnosis from many doctors! We need to take back our power like you said and walk out report and get a doctor who would at least LISTEN! He doesn’t even have the balls to reply leaving a ❤️ maybe he isn’t even a real psychiatrist! Nothing I’ve seen proves he is.

My reaction to the doctor’s reaction is that I think this speaks volumes to the increasing issue with short attention spans and the need for instant gratification. 32 seconds in and a comment about how long the intro was. At several points there was a rush to judgment, in some cases before a sentence/phrase was even complete. If this was a patient explaining themselves to a professional, the patient could have very easily felt dismissed by minute 4 and given up, simply because the professional didn’t have the patience to let the patient finish pleading their case. To the doctor’s credit, he came around by the end, somewhat. I’m not one to post critical comments to videos, this actually may be my first. It’s probably just me being defensive as a Ren fan. But, as this was a reaction from a health care professional, I felt compelled to throw in my two cents, for what it’s worth.

Speaking as a psychiatric social worker, I had the same response. Ren speaks for the chronically ill, both physically and mentally. After being part of this community, I have heard too many stories of patients being dismissed and misdiagnosed due the physician's inability to listen and expand their consciousness. I am glad you came to a better understanding by the end of the video, but also felt the need to speak up.

I had the same initial thought when I started watching this video, it seemed like a judgement had been before the art had truly presented itself and before it had been given chance to make it’s presence known.
It really is an excellent example of the shift in attention span that many folks seem to have now with the advent of super short form media!

I think the difference might be whether you have heard of Ren before, or know whether he really suffers with a mental illness. I work in mental health too, and I watched the video with no context too, and at first thought it was going to be a video of someone mis-representing a mental illness (partly because of the pig mask!). But then when I realised what he was actually saying I changed my mind too.
But if you don’t know anything about him it can be hard to know from the start, especially because there’s lots of mis-representation of mental illness on social media atm.

O wow ... I think those of you who have already commented have said it all. I echo your sentiments and experiences. It takes a high degree of arrogance to be so dismissive and critical of someone who has suffered at the hands of 'medical professionals' for 13 years, but actually this is quite revealing. I'd love to see Ren teaching in med schools, not that they would want him. The mirror he would hold up would be too confronting, I think.

Luckily I also had some good Doctors that were concerned enough to investigate further or I'd probably be dead now. Not a thing that promotes confidence in the lottery of how you are going to be treated by people who, quite literally, can have the power of life and death over you. I actually think this reaction is a perfect second layer accompanying this piece of performance art. The song is about a young man that was carelessly misdiagnosed by a medical system that is likely overburdened, and doesn't have the time nor incentive to actually hear what he is saying. It's almost as if the reactor is a character in Ren's story.
By the way, the pig mask character, is an artistic representation of how the dark and cynical side of Ren's dichotomy views the medical profession. It's quite beautiful how the reacting medical professional immediately dismissed it and took it as silly over the top melodrama. Almost living up to it, and validating that cynicism. The medical professionals treating Ren dismissed what he said about himself, and diagnosed his chronic pain and illness as trauma response, his emotional state causing his body to feel sick when it wasn't...when in fact he has Lyme disease. He spent years being told by experts that his mind was making him sick, when he had an actual physical illness. The tragedy of this story is that his dark an cynical side was right about his views of the medical profession, at least in Ren's first hand experience, causing an exacerbation of this inner conflict, because if the dark and cynical Ren was right about that, what else could he possibly be right about.
Ren was not setting a trap for you...but you seemed to be ensnared in one anyways.

You missed: “but there were victims and there were students”. I think this is very important. He learnt from his experiences. But more than that, I think he’s saying if people don’t learn from it then they become victims. I also think the ending is about accepting we are not perfect (angels) or completely evil (demons) and nor are we completely in control (like gods). From reading comments, I can see that this has helped a LOT of people.

This song was written when Ren felt he didn't have long left on this Earth. He had spent 10 years suffering incredible pain, not being able to eat properly and not able to even read a book because he had no energy. For young man in his late teens and all through his twenties, this was devastating. He had gone from Dr to Dr trying to get help but it was a case of "I've done the tests I'm supposed to, they're all negative so it's all in your head". The psychiatrists promptly decided it must be manic depression and medicated him. When that didn't work they decided it was chronic fatigue syndrome and put him on other stuff and so on until he eventually had a psychotic break. At times of lucidity, Ren did his own research and even went so far as going to witch doctors and healers because he was so desperate. Thankfully Ren realised that when he was put on antibiotics for something, he felt a bit better so this prompted him to seek out an infection specialist in Brussles who didn't even have to test him to realise Ren had been bitten by a tick as a teenager when camping and had Lyme's Disease. Since then Ren managed to fund raise enough money for a couple of stem cell transplants which helped but as the disease had been running riot throughout his body for so long, he had now had to deal with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, some arthritis and some brain damage. He can only eat a handful of veg and meat bc he gets ill otherwise. He's still in constant pain and had many other issues he deals with on a daily basis but he still writes the most incredible music in spite and because of everything he's been through. Currently, he is undergoing specialist treatment in Canada and has just released his fantastic album Sick Boi, which can you believe beat Rick Astley to the #1 album chart the week it got released. Oh, did I mention he has no label and did this entirely of his own back and with help from his friends?
If you take anything away from this, I hope it's to remember to double check that your 'schizophrenic patients' are not actually people who have been bitten by a tick.
My advice is to continue to listen to Ren, even if it's on your own. You should listen to Seven Sins, (watch) Sick Boi, Suic!de (not just about himself), his 'thank you for a million subscribers' statement and Chalk Outlines (sung with Chinchilla).

Oh shit, a psychiatrist reacting to this and judging his motives right off the bat without taking the time to really understand a person? Say it isn't so!
But yeah, it sounds about right. And yes. I know and work with many psychiatrists. I have to help people into the damage they cause. Ask Ren about it, he will tell you all about how people in our field make rash judgements they absolutely damaged him. And I stress JUDGEments because when one comes from the place of "expert" then we inherently place ourselves above others without said expertise and make JUDGEments without actually allowing the other to participate or engage from an authentic place.
I get it, it's the way we are trained. But it's wrong. And it hurts people.

The first time I heard this song I thought; what an excellent depiction of the human condition we all share, not a song about mental illness. We all have memories etched into our brains because of this angel-demon battle. I'm in my 50's and I can still very vividly remember when I was 6 and finding my cat laying on the side of the road dead. What was once a light and angel in my life at the time instantly became a demon of darkness filling me with sorrow and pain I did not understand. This is the angel-demon dance he is talking about that we all as human beings must face, in my opinion. Peace, Love & Recyle.

A few points. First, sometimes reacting to things line by line can lead you astray, causing you to miss the bigger picture and causing you to fail to make connections that are obvious when you take in the whole. Second, on a composition that defies all expectations and conventions yet nevertheless has millions of views, it seems like hubris to suggest the composer doesn't know how to grab an audience's attention. Finally, while I understand your discomfort at the pig mask, especially as it relates to depictions of mental illness, it's a symbol that Ren uses throughout his work. It's an homage to Orwell's "Animal Farm."

His song 'Su*cide' is a delve into both his own depression and thoughts and then finished with his reaction to his best friend taking his life when they were 19. It's very powerful, and a lot of people online have taken great comfort from the fact that these pieces make a conversation around topics that are taboo.
Also, yes this is entirely Ren's background, and he was misdiagnosed for 7 years, told that his pain was all in his head and treated for mental illness, where the drugs actually caused psychosis and other symptoms. In reality he had Lyme disease and it's permanently damaged his nervous system. He's currently in Calgary getting stem cell treatment for it. He released Hi Ren whilst he was there earlier this year. He went on to write many of the recent tracks despite being so ill, and his album got to no. 1 in the UK a month or so ago.
He's insanely talented, guitar, piano, composing, singing, rapping, and he takes from many different genres. If you go down the Ren rabbit hole, you are very unlikely to be disappointed. :) x
Edited to add... can we also appreciate the fact that this was a 9 minute song recorded live in one take. A lot of his music is like that. I'm an old woman, metalhead, and I have to say Ren is my favourite artist now.
Edited to add again, haha... if you like old school hip-hop, there are some very fun tracks that he released, so yeah, definitely check him out. Mental illness does thread through a lot of his music because of his own experiences, so quite relevant for your channel :)

He is a brilliant wordsmith unlike any other of our time, a true generational talent. You need to see his other work. He defies genre, is independent artist, musician, producer, performer,etc...
He struggled for over a decade with chronic autoimmune illness, undiagnosed Lyme disease, and psychosis. He can express the experoences of mental illness and emotions that many relate to.

@@Catlily5 - You're being overly defensive. Your personal interpretation is perfectly valid but Ren has stated very clearly, that the song isn't a description of mental illness. It was a description of the human condition generally. Large sections of it was Ren taking the mickey out of himself and his attitudes towards his music and success.
I made that comment because far too many people have heard Ren briefly reference his illnesses, mental and physical, in the song, made a personal connection, because they suffer from mental illness and made the incorrect assumption that the whole song is about mental illness. They have then gone on to tell everyone that that's what it's about definitively, rather than a, perfectly valid, personal meaning.
It definitely doesn't describe any of Ren's mental illnesses. I've suffered from chronic depression with psychotic episodes for decades, as well as acute anxiety and panic attacks and it was blatantly obvious to me that this was about the human condition generally. Ren even says as much in the song. I understand people wanting to make that personal connection and make it about themselves and there's nothing wrong with that but such personal meanings are not definitive and don't describe Ren's meaning or intent. @@Codex7777 I don't care what you say. For me the song partly represents mental illness. Even if it was Lyme disease induced mental illness. When Ren made the song it was interpreted different ways by different people. That is part of art. It will mean different things to different people even if the artist didn't mean it that way. And I am not convinced that what you say is even the truth.

This psychiatrist reminds me of the psychiatrist who incorrectly diagnosed me with Borderline Personality Disorder in 2015, seven minutes into my initial consult with him.
He said "don't worry 90% of my female patients have it....The other 10% are bipolar. Men don't typically have BPD.
So not only did I have a female only diagnosis, I was just a statistic.
He said to Google it and see if the symptoms resonated. I did. They didn't.
I asked around my partner, exes, close friends, family members, and neighbours to get a more "objective" viewpoint. None of those 20+ people agreed that I fit that profile, even looking at the DSM-V breakdown.
I persisted with 6 more consults, but he'd made up his mind likely within the first 2 minutes, before telling me at 7 minutes.
Way too arrogant to be able to reverse that snap "statistical" decision. So I gave up on psychiatric help, and a year later had a psychotic break.
Then I moved back across the country, to see a psychiatrist I'd had a few consults with years before, he gave a hard no to BPD. He said "yeah you occasionally have traits, like any human, like myself, but nothing that could even suggest you meet the diagnostic criteria.
I had cPTSD, partly due to the circumstances that forced me to move interstate from a domestic violence situation.
+ ADHD that had been left untreated whilst interstate.
This was a diagnosis from years prior, that the other psychiatrist had said I couldn't have, because it is so extremely rare in cis-gender women that he'd never diagnosed it for women.
He said my ADHD had an atypical presentation, but it was a presentation he'd seen in numerous other patients and discussed with his colleagues who had similar patients. Years later when I raised autism spectrum disorder, he said "likely, a lot of my atypical ADHD patients have now got that diagnosis, but when I initially diagnosed you they were thought to be mutually exclusive and couldn't be diagnosed as coexisting. Either way, I'm not registered to diagnose in Australia."
He sent me for a second opinion, unbiased - where I was initially assessed before my file was read, then had my second consult after my psychiatric history was reviewed.
      Yes I'm ASD/ADHD. and a woman, and a statistic.

5 of the 15 women in hospital had been his patients at one point (one many years prior) and ALL of us got BPD diagnosed, incorrectly, within the first few minutes of the first consult.
It's a dangerous diagnosis in that often once it's on your file, you can be dismissed by other health care providers as being "hysterical/untruthful/malingering."
I also have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, and physical emergencies are common.
Around that time I had a fractured vertebra that was ignored for days, along with a partially collapsed lung.
It took my brother (a radiographer in another state) to get his radiologist to report on the X-rays and point out the fracture and pneumothorax to my doctor, who could suddenly "notice the abnormalities" that even I could see a week prior.
That type of thing happens with those diagnosed with BPD any time they engage with medical services. I was just lucky to have family in the field, unlike others.
That is an outdated view of BPD, but common in medical field.

So much of Ren's life revolved around the misdiagnosis of Lyme's disease as mental illness - which then became mental illness because of the misdiagnosis and medications - you'll find it a common theme in is songs. If you want to hear more of his singing and experiences with the drug treatment, I suggest "Diazepam" and "Chalk Outlines" (a live duet with the artist Chinchilla). If you want to hear more rapping, the song "Sick Boi" is the title track of his album that was released #1 in the U.K. and on the Billboard Top 200. Ren extensively read dystopian fiction, so "Sick Boi" to me is not only a description of his journey, but also how his journey is an allegory for broader problems in society. The pig character is "Animal Farm"/"Lord of the Flies" symbolism used frequently in his videos, so it's not as simplistic/sensationalistic as you seem to think - Ren goes much deeper than you're giving him credit for. Social/system criticism is another broad theme in his music. You seem to be stuck in the mindset of the shallow music industry stuff that's so common. Ren's completely independent - no record label, he produces most of his own music and writes it all (unless he's doing a cover), his latest video "Money Game 3" is the first one that's had a budget over 1,000 pounds.
Ren lost his friend Joe to suicide when he was 19, and that experience is one of the main factors that kept Ren from taking that step while his brain was on fire and he was told there wasn't anything physically wrong with him as Lyme's disease was eating away at him. It's also a recurring theme in some of his songs. "Su!cide" starts as Ren's personal battle and ends with his feelings about losing Joe. The title song of his "first" album, "Freckled Angels", is one that he wrote for Joe's memorial.
If you want simple fun, Ren has those too. For you, "What You Want", is probably the one I would recommend, but there's so much great stuff in his catalog, you'll wonder why you're just now discovering him. You may also like "1990s".

His experience was particularly awful, and while this is rare - this is his truth. There’s a lot of context about who he is and what he’s suffered with/through that you need to know when reacting to or criticising the video.
For people misdiagnosed or who have had otherwise terrible experiences with being forced onto the wrong meds and all sorts; this is what it felt like for us. A horror scene. While yes the pigs covered in blood etc is quite dramatic, it’s also art

Misdiagnosis is less rare than you think, unfortunately. Many psychiatrists (not all, but sadly many) think they are the all-knowing authority. They don't see the patient as equals and they do not often value their input, and will often misunderstand in their attempts to sum everything up in a brilliant-sounding expression of intellectual masturbation. Sometimes we pay doctors so they have the opportunity to stroke their own egos. Often patients are rendered voice-less and devalued. I know this sounds harsh and jaded but I have witnessed and observed this myself having worked in the field. It would be so great if this doctor truly considered all the feedback here and became a better doctor because of it. What more often happens is that those of us who voice this perspective end up getting labeled based on assumptions that are steeped in defensiveness and bias

We can see at your reaction, where the problem is in the psychiatric health system: you shoot too quick, you consider yourself (the doctors) superior, you don't really listen, you look at things through a raster, which changes with the education... So, the doctors didn't take him serious, when he said, his pain is real, "knew" it was a trauma response, this way treated him like an "Non-Person". He had to do independent research in the net, with help of friends and after 7 years misdiagnosis, medicated against bipolar disorder etc, which caused more damage, he went to a doctor in Belgium, who found out, that it was lyme disease. So maybe, realizing and maybe even respecting this personal history and experience with the system, he has been at the mercy, you got to live with his image of the pig mask, without being personally intimidated. Having 21 million views, suddenly this is taken seriously. Maybe humility should be included as part of the education in the health system. (Song by Ren: "Humble", with Eden Nash, wonderful). I felt irritated when I heard the reaction here including the early interruption that continued, ease of expressing discontent about Ren's composition without demonstrating patience until the end. In the 1980's I counted that I had completed over 3000 drug and mental health assessments & stopped counting. At agencies, I loved being the first therapist they saw at the assessment because I knew I would blow their false thoughts of a "professional" being judgemental, condescending. I actually told my psychiatrist about this video. I have bipolar, chronic depression, and PTSD the depression and bipolar get pretty bad. By that I mean, when I am symptomatic I cannot function out in the world, psychosis and mania, they are just a part of my life, so my mental health is pretty much the most important thing in my life because it allows me to live a life as normal as I can. anyway I am 52 I have been in therapy for so many years, and I’ve had quite a few psychiatrists. It wasn’t until this song or what he said at the end that something resonated with me about my mental illness. I had always thought of it as a battle, and almost like a battle that I would win one day, what he said was so simple and easily digestible that it has made such a huge impact in my life. Thinking of it as a pendulum, huge! I deal with my mental illness so much better. It has made my life easier. When I know I’m becoming symptomatic, I think of the simple words, I use it these words as a tool, probably the most important tool that anyone’s ever suggested to me. I only tell you this and I told my psychiatrist this too. I have a wonderful psychiatrist but anyway so you may just assume that we (your patients) know we’re going to have this for the rest of our life or like it’s in our mind or that we think about it in those terms, and I don’t think a lot of people do. I think a lot of people do think of it is a battle and a battle that one day we are just going to win. So just telling your patients almost exactly what Ren said, I think it would help them in the same way that it helped me. I can’t tell you how thankful I am that I found this song and I heard what he said at the end. It honestly has made a huge difference in my life. I’m not a doctor obviously but I have been to so many and I have been in years of therapy. This is just I think a useful suggestion for you and all of your doctor friends. Maybe you do this already, but in all of my years it’s something that not one therapist or psychiatrist has ever said anything close to this to me so I would imagine not a lot of them do. Had I heard this at any point in my life from a therapist or psychiatrist it would have prevented a lot of struggle, years of struggle unnecessarily not that I don’t struggle still, but I handle it better. anyway thank you so much for watching this. I wish every therapist and every psychiatrist would watch this and just take what he says to heart at the end of his video and use it. I promise you it will be so helpful to some of your patients because I would imagine you have a lot of patients just like me.❤

Sorry, I just heard what you said at the end. In my comment I just posted to you that I really do hope you read, I don’t mean the religious stuff he said, I wouldn’t like to hear that from my doctor, but the pendulum and it’s not a battle for us to win, an eternal dance.. the more rigid we are the harder it is. I truly, stupidly, in the back of my mind thought I’d win my battle with mental illness. I’m not stupid, I know people aren’t miraculously cured from bipolar… I’ll be on medication when I am 80, I finally accepted it without knowing I needed to. Acceptance is something that would have been useful for my psychiatrist or therapist to have said even once In 30 years of treatment I’ve never heard anything like that. It’s the most useful thing that I’ve heard what he said about the pendulum, about it not being a battle and about the more you fight it the more you will struggle, it only gets harder and maybe make your patients aware of acceptance. I really wish someone would have said these things 30 years ago. Anyway, please read my other comment. You may think your patients know this, but I promise you most of them don’t think about it in these terms. Again, thank you for reacting to this song. I do wish every mental health care physician, and therapist could all listen to what he said at the end and just say it to their patients. I mean in your own way, but the message, it’s a tool for us. I am proof that hearing this is a useful tool, at least for me it’s been the most useful tool I have at my disposal. So so so helpful! Sorry to ramble, thank you for reading this if you do.

He quite likely only _has_ four or five minutes for each patient in the NHS... which isn't actually much of a critique of the NHS, since in the US where I live, mental health (along with dental and visual health) isn't even considered a part of "healthcare" in the first place. Brain. Teeth. Eyes. Seem like body parts to me, but what do I know? Insurance rarely covers much, if anything for those, and so you can only get help with your mental health if you're rich.
So... take your pick. Rushed, overworked doctors who just don't have the _time_ to have an attention span? Or an hour at a time with someone who listens deeply and wants to help... at the cost of your rent for the month. And if you want a second session that month? Better start thinking about selling body parts.
Doesn't make this guy not broken... but it does maybe cast a light on the thought that it's not his fault, that he's exactly what the system intends him to be.

He was someone who spent years being pumped full of medications that had zero (negative) effect because he was fed into a system that made assumptions rather than properly diagnose and treat him. The music in the beginning and singing is seemingly flat and enremakable and represents the artist in his work and is transformed later when he revisits the hooting style and integrates the dark side into the mix. While Ren is not rapping in the beginning it is representative of telling a story; you do not get that until later in the piece which makes it more powerful. Most tend to not recognize it at all.

You need to step back and look at the whole picture. I would be frightened to have a psychiatrist who picks me apart line by line and not take the global view. This hits me deeply, as a person with mental health issues due to childhood abuse who also suffers from an autoimmune disease that was difficult to diagnose. Too much physical disease is called mental illness because its not easy to find. Check yourself Dr. Ras.

I really appreciate your willingness to open up as the song progressed - Ren has this quality about him that is so honest and raw that when you first find him it’s almost like it’s not real, but it changes you. I’ve seen this happen to people across the world and it’s any ren video- there will always be our individual favorites and such, but I’ve never heard a Ren song that didn’t open my heart and make me think. Paired with his skills as a musician and entertainer? The man is a once in a generation artist. Keep your heart open and enjoy the rest of the Ren Rabbit Hole! ❤

The eternal dance reference, that it's what separates us rom angels, demons, and gods, is that unlike those entities, human beings are not inherently benevolent, evil, or omniscient but have to struggle with balancing positive/negative feelings and perspectives.

I wish to apologize first to our Ren community and to Ren himself.
I just can not be Better, I can not be Kind.
Now my reaction to this ... person.
I have seen other mental health reactors to this song, as well as another Psychiatrist. This person if he is a psychiatrist is not good at his job. He is too judgemental. Too self centered and self important. I will leave this comment. Its likely too long for him to actually be able to read it, anyway. I will not like and I will not subscribe.

    • @barefootalien
      @barefootalien 7 місяців тому +1

Interesting that he favorited almost every critical comment, though, isn't it? At the least, I think that speaks to an idea that he at least _understands_ his own weaknesses, and recognized that he has room for growth.
I've also never seen _any_ other reactor disrespect the pause as he takes off the guitar... very few interrupt his spoken word poetry at the end, let alone multiple times, let alone without backing up. Did he even _hear_ the most poignant parts? I know he only heard "But there are victims..." and missed "...and there are students." Because he paused half-way through the word "students".
I have seen others just completely miss the plot with Ren... a military veteran reactor who thought the point of Money Game 3 was that Jimmy should've listened more to his dad's pearls of wisdom he kept trying to drop, only to drop them on deaf ears... that "Lamborghini for a life, trading money for souls?" is a comment that Lambos are expensive to adapt to handicapped controls, so he should've listened to his dad and not gone crazy, just get what's his and be happy instead of going so out of control he challenged the cartel...
Some people just... aren't ready. And if they aren't, you can't reach them by force. You just have to wait for your moment, and hope you happen to be there when the window of opportunity opens, when they're receptive enough to _hear._

Hmm. Interesting reaction. Glad you got into the swing of it for the most part at least. Easy to see this as a story just about schizophrenia but at the same time it seems like such a limited interpretation. As the final summary made quite clear, this is really about the inner struggle of the human condition. The extent to which we see this in ourselves really determines the empathy that we will find and so be truly able to help our fellow human beings. So much more in fact than any intellectual knowledge that we may have gained.

Even if you put his mental health themes aside (which will be difficult because they weave throughout most of his music) you are going to love his rap game. Ren is all about the 90s scene and he’s more talented than we’ve had in a long while. I suggest that you react to “Sic boi” next, now knowing about his battle with Lyme disease that you’ve read about in these comments.

Welcome to the Renaissance! Ren is my favourite artist of all time. I say artist because he is a multifaceted diamond! From singing (all styles) to rapping (bars/flows/schemes for days), Bardcore (story telling) beatbox, makes his own beats, scatting and a multi instrumentalist (guitars, bass, drums, melodica and more). On top of that he is the most beautiful human being inside and out who has been through and continues to go through absolute hell.
He’s 33 from Anglesey, Wales originally but spent most his life in Brighton, England. He’s been living in Calgary, Canada all year receiving intense medical treatment for his brain damage and mast cell activation disorder amongst other things.
He started off making beats at 12 and selling CDs then moved on to busking. He was part of a band called Trick The Fox and was signed to Sony but they didn’t renew the contract after his health deteriorated. He then started The Big Push. They went on hiatus the end of last year after 5 years partly due to his move to Canada and also because the other members are also soloists and were moving around too.
I have a list of songs to check out of all styles. Obviously this is no where near everything but gives you places to start. 🖤

Thank you for giving your honest opinion. I really appreciate that your comments seemed protective of those who suffer mental illness... not to stigmatize or fall for the easy tropes. (I don’t think Ren does that but you’ll have to listen to more to decide). I take the ending Angels, Demons, Gods… being we’re not all good, all bad or all powerful. We are human beings and therefore we are all some of each, and all flawed.

Ren has suffered psychosis as a result of being misdiagnosed by doctors for many years when in fact, he had Lyme disease.
You can’t even begin to imagine how many people this song, and Ren have helped. Life saving for many. He’s a massive mental health advocate. The pig man is a reoccurring theme in his videos and has way more meaning than just sensationalism. I feel that you will love Ren’s album, Sick-boi, as it has a firmer footing in your usual musical tastes.
Reading some of the other comments, it’s unfortunate that your review has upset some members of the community who are usually so kind and caring. Your inability to listen left me feeling quite sad for your chosen profession. I would normally choose not to leave a comment rather than leave something negative, but on this occasion, it needed to be said in the hope it may help your patients. 🐇🕳️🖤

This is not just about Ren's experience of mental illness, it is about the human condition, something we all can relate to if we are insightful enough, humble enough, and vulnerable enough to admit it. We all have conflicting messages we tell ourselves. It is all of us, including the psychiatrist reacting, but he didn't or couldn't see himself in this, only "those with mental illness". We are ALL human beings...even psychiatrists.

what he meant by the last line "it's this eternal dance that separates humans from demons, angels, and Gods. I must not forget, WE must not forget. That we are humans." is us Humans are not perfect and we all have our own eternal struggle unlike Demons, Angels and Gods (he's agnostic btw) which have no mental or physical struggles due to not having free will. as most agnostics they don't deny that there could be a god or multiple gods but also don't believe in the Faith based religions.

He was misdiagnosed with depression, bipolar disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome and later was diagnosed with Lyme disease in Belgium.[17][2][18]

Ren himself has said his favorite part of the entire song was in fact….”that eternal dance (from dark to light) is what separates human beings from angels, demons and Gods. And that we must remember, we are human beings”.
Now I know I got my psy d from a crackerjack box, (however I dated a LPC for 2 years) but even I can understand that angels Gods are all good, and demons are all bed. And the dance from good to bad (the pendulum) implies humans have both good and bad. And to cut yourself some slack, you’re human. Not sure what’s not to agree there. What I’m not sure of is because your title says you’re a psychologist, you see yourself as a God or you just really not that great at the self written career in the title. You don’t seem manic to me so I presume it’s the latter or the two.

The one contribution I would add is my observation about the second Yodel. The first one, the lights are steady. The second, the lights flicker some. My interpretation is that the song starts with Ren trying to write a song. Guitar intro and Yodel. Suddenly, the second voice interrupts, Hi Ren. Then the conversation between the 2 ending with the voice of hope saying: "We are a coin of two different sides." The song creation picks up from where it left off (the first yodel) to continue into the 2nd Yodel. It combines ideas from before and adds (blinking lights) more vocal continuation. To me, it is Ren saying that his creative process has contributions from both sides. The ending soliloquy then brings in the dance, as demonstrated by both sides contributing to the creation. By relaxing and softening to let both sides contribute, this is the art we get from him.

As I’ve experienced as well, Ren was treated with anti depressants, diazepam, Xanax, Seraquel (evil drug if ur not psychotic) and other anti psychotics. While all of these did damage and he wasn’t getting better, the underlying Lyme was 😂wreaking havoc on his brain, nervous system and vagus nerve, for 7 years. I believe that this song is not just for an interpretation of schizophrenia, but of mental illness in general and that voice we all have can make us doubt everything we want and try to do, even like imposter syndrome. In this way Ren has reached such wide audiences and the song has skyrocketed because so many people can relate to him on multiple levels. Thank God for Ren. After 10 yrs of many many dr.s, psychiatrists, and stints in hospitals and mental health facilities, I also was finally found to have an underlying condition Mitochondrial Disease, causing most of my symptoms. And Seroquel almost ruined my life!

Everyone is different in what they like and don't like. I grew up listening to classical music so I am used to music without words but I still like music with words better. Dr. Das sounds like he may not be a fan of acoustic guitar music (as he said that he hoped the whole thing wasn't guitar).
Personally I liked the guitar but not the hooting bird noises. So I wasn't too thrilled at first either, when I first heard the song. But I listened to it and was impressed as time went on. I think it is a very valuable song for those of us with mental illnesses and for other people as well.

As someone who has been gaslit and treated horribly by the medical community, I understand the pig reference, and it's 100% appropriate for a lot of our experiences. Just one of my many examples to how poorly I was treated? I had a kidney stone for 9 days. Before my surgery to put in a stent, they didnt give me pain meds, starting the night before, and then my surgery was delayed by hours. Still no pain meds and I was treated like a nuisance for being in agonizing pain. I wasn't screaming, but it was hard not to moan and groan, and occasionally cry from being in pain for so long, and not a single person there, expressed one tiny bit of empathy, but instead treated me with contempt, rolling their eyes and glaring. Have you had a kidney stone? Imagine having one for 9 days, then being treated in such a way, for being in absolute distress.

Good reaction, glad you came around to Ren. You absolutely should listen to some more. Some things in particular:
    * Sick Boi - It's specifically talking about the experience of being treated by the psychiatry system
    * Chalk Outlines (x Chinchilla, Live) - Another one covering the experience of suffering from mental illness
    * The Tale of Jenny and Screech (full) - Relevant to you as someone dealing with youth offenders, and an epic story telling masterpiece
    * Murderer, Genesis, Power and The Hunger - you like hip hop? We got hip hop. These ones are serious (and also excellent 1-take videos)
    * Love Music Part 4 (and 1-3) - hip hop with a lighter and more irreverant side
    * Money Game, and Money Game parts 2 and 3 - Serious social commentary, but less relevant to your specific interests. Money Game part 3 is Ren and Sam (his videographer)'s biggest and most impressive video to date.
I would love to see your reactions to all of those. Subscribed and eagerly awaiting

There's a ton of info on Ren personally. He's very open about....everything. He often writes quite a bit about songs in the comments. Reading what he said about this song might be a great place to start. He also has a wikipedia page and has done a lot of honest and intimate livestreams and interviews here on youtube.
What he says about the dance is what separates us from angels, demons, gods: they don't have to dance between choices, between good and evil, sick and well. They're either all good or all bad -- doesn't have to be in a religious way, just that there's black and white but humans are a bit of both, making our existence more complex and fallible.

First -- if you're a Golden Age of Hip Hop guy, you have to watch Ren's "What You Want", an incredible homage to the old school days. Ren's current album, which debuted at #1 on the British charts (narrowly defeating Rick Astley), is mostly rap and hip hop, and the man has bars. I truly think you'll like most of what he does. "Hi Ren" is NOT representative of his work. It is a deeply personal song that just kind of poured out and had to happen, and is most people's introduction to him, but Ren is so much more. I've heard hundreds of songs he's performed, most of them he's written, and there is not a duplicate among them. AND though his current album is mostly rap and mostly songs he wrote before/during his 10 years in bed with Lyme disease and psychosis, he promises his next album is barely rap. So... give "What You Want" a listen, and then most would tell you to listen to "The Tales of Jenny and Screech" (with Violet's Tale), but I truly think just about anything will blow you away. Thanks for a great reaction! I've subscribed to your channel and look forward to exploring your catalog. (P.S. "A Psych for Sore Minds" is a killer channel name!)

Reconsider the pig as human indifference to human experience. Sticking to a misdiagnosis despite ample input contradicting it can make a health professional a pig, in the same way that a developer intent on razing an established neighborhood so he can plant his singular vision of whatever in its place is a pig. You deal with the underclass - those who have no choice but to rely upon the questionable motives of those who can offer a hand up. It shouldn’t automatically offend you that a too common experience is the indifferent provider. Tuck into this - Ren contracted Lyme Disease at the age of 21, but was misdiagnosed and treated for a variety of different psychological conditions. Between the advancing Lyme disease and the prescriptions to address nonexistent problems Ren was driven into bouts of psychosis, not to dwell on the physiologically real pain he was going through that was being dismissed as essentially psychosomatic. After all that he has the right to necklace indifferent providers with pig tropes.

If you want 90's hip hop, listen to "What You Want". That will deliver, especially if you like The Beastie Boys.
His album Sick Boi is predominantly rap, but Ren is a Genre bender. He'll mix Rap with EDM, bardic folk and reggae, then sing a bluesy ballad. His busking with The Big Push has him doing all sorts of music.
He wants his next album to go brit-pop.

Glad you came around in the end. TBH I was so close to disliking it several times because you werent giving it much of a chance in the beginning. Due to your profession Id like to suggest Sick Boi next....

The eternal dance of being human, the suffering, the joys , what we gain and what we lose is what separates us from everything else, pending on your personal beliefs of angels, demons and gods .
His performance to me is a reflection of the internal dialogue that all humans go through of self worth, self doubt and overcoming this struggle to be knocked back down again and to rise again.
I'm sure many have already mentioned that Ren was misdiagnosed for many years of the Lyme disease he has. As we all know when Lyme disease goes untreated for many years it causes havoc on one's muscles, joints, heart and brain.

I'm sure others have said it but Ren is a student of the 90s, and classic hip hop, not to mention classical and jazz and... name it. He has a deep catalog, something for everyone and then some. I think if you continue listening to his music you'll love some and some will be meh for you, but that's the beauty of music isn't it, and you won't come out the other end feeling disappointed. 🤘🏻

Chalk Outlines a duet with Chinchilla & Ren is another one that would be worth you listening to.
Ren was misdiagnosed for almost 10 years. He was given many different medications that led to bouts of psychosis. The Lyme has affected his brain. He’s currently in Canada getting treatment for his Lyme now.
He, like a lot of us have had to go through many Drs & medications before getting the correct diagnosis.

Please, get to know Ren. He is incredibly open in the interviews he's done. A good interview for you to watch regarding his intentions with this song and his story of illness was with Zach Sang: Ren | Sick Boi, Chronic Illness, Hi Ren, Lyme Disease. It's an hour long, but well worth it. He also explains the meaning of the Pig that appears in so many of his videos. Ren is an amazing artist and human being. He also has an incredibly diverse fan base spanning all generations. I am one of many people over 40 who've expressed excitement over Ren like we haven't felt about an artist since our teens.

As someone who have gone through multiple serious and long lasting depressive episodes. The happy go lucky singing in the intro and the outro seems to me to be a depiction of a day to day life. To me at least, the intro is discordant, kind of shaky, like his life is getting tougher as depression creeps in, but the outro is almost celebratory and victorious in energy and yet also happily ignorant. I often feel that way when coming out of depression, like I can finally master whatever I want to do as that depressive weight has finally been lifted off of my back.

Mate, you missed so much crucial stuff just by pausing and missing a bit and not rewinding a touch before carrying on.
'In psychological warfare there are no real winners, and no real losers. But, there are victims, and there are students.' Because you missed a bit you misinterpreted it.
'It is this eternal dance that separates human beings from Angels, from Demons, from Gods. And I must not forget, we must not forget that we are human beings.' To me this is quite simple. don't be blaming your condition or your behaviour on the supernatural.
I was interested in how you would feel about this piece. Ren is a once in generation artist. he is comfortable in any genre any style. he really is an exceptional talent.
He has Lyme's disease and was misdiagnosed for several years and they treated him for psychosis. The pig at the beginning is how he views certain aspects of the medical profession.

Dude ran into traffic naked and rolled around in the road after jumping out of his mums car. I’d say that’s a sign of real psychosis

The “eternal dance” seems to me to be exactly what you had said earlier (albeit with different wording) about this being an incurable condition; (remission, etc)
I think that he said the same thing- and more relative to people who suffer with this condition.

Your lack of empathy and listening skills is very disappointing coming from a mental health professional. I wacthed the hall video hoping that in some point you start listening to and You did not. You kept stopping the video half lyrics/half message making random comments without listening at all. I suggest to watch videos reactions from others mental health professionals, including doctors, psychologists, nurses; You will be able to see the differences between your and their reactions. I hope your reaction video doesn't reflect your daily professional practice and it is just you having a bad day, which we all have

Up until I was 9 years old, I would intermittently hear a voice in my head that was not my own. The voice was distinctly different to mine, and always negative. It would self criticise or urge me to do things I knew to be morally wrong. The most peculiar thing about the voice was that it took no effort on my behalf to produce. My own thoughts always felt like there was a process that required effort to bring them to the forefront of my mind, this voice appeared as though it was spoken by another. The sentences felt predetermined like they had already been constructed.
I remember very vividly at 9 years old, becoming very frustrated with the voice. I stood in my back yard, internally screaming at the voice to be silent again and again, and it did. In a flash there was silence, to the point where my head felt like an empty room. I wasn't used to the quiet and that voice never returned. It almost felt lonely in my head.
When I got older I had intermittent bouts with auditory hallucinations where I would hear perfect symphonies, usually at night when drifting off to sleep. They were so clear that they sounded like they were emanating from a radio in the corner of my room. I knew they weren't there, but for some reason they never came with the feeling of fear. I also recall sitting on a bus at the age of 15, and hearing the sound of a crowded room, with about 100 voices chattering away, I was the only person apart from the driver on the bus.
These experiences were always very brief, and few and far between.
My last hallucination was during an intense bout of psychosis in 2015, and was my first visual hallucination. I was walking down a pavement after jumping out my mums car in a crossroads in a moment of frustration and distress with my condition. I was trying to run from myself. What appeared to be a homeless man with a dark complexion approached me, and asked me what was wrong. I explained that I had been sick most my life, and I wasn't sure I had the strength to continue. He looked at me, and smiled and told me 'everything is going to be okay in the end Ren.' I had not told him my name. There was something so overpoweringly sincere about this very simple message, which brought with it an overwhelming feeling of inner peace, and in a flash, he vanished.
My rational brain always linked these experiences to what the doctors have told me, that there are parts of my brain compromised by the autoimmunity in my body. That the myelin sheaths surrounding the complex electrical system that conduct my thoughts were damaged and compromised, causing these lucid experiences that I knew did not exist inside the physical world.
The part of me that edges away from logical and rational thought always attributed these thoughts to some kind of otherworldly intervention, that made my thoughts the battleground of some spiritual tug of war.
For a long time I never really acknowledged this part of myself, for with it brought the danger and stigma of sounding like a crazy person.
I decided with my latest release, to the best of my ability, to capture and express this chess match of thought.
Hi Ren comes out in just over 24 hours.
I can't wait for you all to hear it.
