I thought it might be interesting to analyse whether Joe Goldberg is actually a psychopath as this UA-cam video has suggested. Or has the term been misappropriated?

In the programme, Joe doesn't kill Bec's best friend to protect her( even though his internal dialogue is justifying his actions that way) he kills her because he can't bear Bec's attention on anyone but him, and because she sees through him somewhat. He uses his internal dialogue to try and delude himself that through his actions, the end justifies the means. However, he doesn't really believe that, soon bores of the person he has been obsessed with, kills them without remorse and moves on to to someone else. Each relationship is emotionally superficial and all about his needs. The full series' is able to demonstrate this more though is probably too time consuming for your analysis. It does seem as if he has many psychopathic traits. How many psychopathic traits does this hypothetical person need to be considered a psychopath? Thankyou for this analysis, very interesting, particularly the data on stalkers.

You need to watch the whole show to get the full perspective. I think he might be more of a sociopath

A former neighbour of mine had a peculiar eating habit. If he had carrots, Brussels sprouts, potatoes, and sausages on his plates he would eat all the carrots first, then only the sprouts, then the spuds and finally the sausages. He had other behavioural habits that made me think that he was a psychopath. He told me of his criminal behaviour - mainly setting fires in businesses that he had been paid to burn or if a company had enraged him. I am pretty sure he was a sociopathic psychopath. He fell out with me, and he hit me with his van, so the police became involved. The community officer spent an hour with him, but he lied through the entire chat. Fortunately, I told a local councillor about all the crap he thought he was putting me through, who then chatted with the officer involved. The officer went back for a two-hour interrogation. The guy and his wife sold their house soon after.

From what I understand, borderline personality disorder is the personality disorder that is most likely to become a stalker.

I would love for you to analyze Dennis Reynolds from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He's a fictional character, but he's written really well imo.

I’m in season 2 so far, intimacy seeking stalker does seem on point. He does manipulate and gaslight but the writing repeatedly draws our attention to the fact that he doesn’t understand people as much as he thinks he does and lies mostly to cover his tracks. Like you said, psychopaths are emotionally intelligent but I think Joe hyper-inflates his own abilities to accurately guess people’s motivations. Definitely has psychopathic traits but his deep insecurities, intimacy seeking and delusions don’t make me think he’s a true psychopath. It is fictional though, so creative liberties are taken no doubt.

Oh, I love this kind of analysis. Also absolutely loved watching the show "You".
I have to agree with some of the other comments, the clips we've seen are important but there is so much more going on with Joe in the show and his character is a lot more complex (I understand though, that you don't have the time to make an analysis of an entire show 😅)

This video missed out a lot of things which are probably quite relevant. His relationship with Beck is obviously important, the show actually shows more about his upbringing and relationships with other people around him. The show is actually worth a watch because I wouldn’t say this video sums everything up even a tiny bit, he’s a lot more complex than it shows here.

I like what you said at 6:06 , illuminating. Your assessment is on point, there are inconsistency in his behaviour which I believe were added as a hook by the script writers.

Analyzing You to see if the main character is a psychopath or not is like watching Finding Nemo and discussing if Nemo is a fish.

I found this TV series kind of interesting and I am not a big fan of TV. I felt he was not a psychopath because his character has a lot of empathy. Maybe he is borderline or something, because he gets very obsessed with the romantic interests and so fixated on making them be with him. But maybe I am not a good judge of this kind of thing because I am Schizoid. I myself have a flat emotional effect. I do have a very powerful since of justice. Kind of like this guy. I have empathy too, but I don't really express it it outwardly. When I was a young adult, the thought crossed my mind that I might be a psychopath, but that was until I actually learned about, and was educated on my condition. Maybe this character only has his empathy on the inside too. Because most of the dialogue he has is internal. I have a lot of internal dialogue too actually, so maybe he is Schizoid too? Actually, we are not known to get obsessed romantically, so maybe not lol.) He would for sure appear like a psychopath to the other characters I think. Dr. Das, can you watch the whole series and revisit this. I would really like your over all psychoanalysis. 🙂
P.S. I was thinking the character 'Love' was actually a psychopath.

If you want to watch psychopaths which are not fiction I would suggest some reality programs. I just finished season two of Below Deck Mediterranean and the chef is definetly one.

I would be interested in you discussing whether he could have any other personality disorder such as npd + whether or not someone with npd would ever justify their actions like that or if they simply wouldn't feel enough remorse

Are psychopaths born without fear, and sociopaths can learn to adapt to fear? I believe that is what Dr. Ramani claims.

It's so interesting that you did this. I had the exact same reaction while watching this show. Not a psychopath. The story line is all over the place.. Borderline/sociopath/psychopath/mentally ill, delusional stalker

I have to agree that I don’t think that he is a psychopath, he’s more of a sociopath and I got hints of BPD, as he puts his love interests on pedestals/favourite person. His behaviour changes so much as the show goes on & we learn a little about his childhood, which again doesn’t suggest psychopathy!

He has all the traits you describe if you watch the show. He also commits multiple planned and also impulsive murders and then covers them up. He shows no remorse for anything and he thinks that his actions are justified. It's a good show with lots of suspense!
