      Yeah, you just need to build confidence. My singing is also weak if I'm self-conscious about who can hear me. If I block out those thoughts and just belt it out, then I can sing well.

      Being a singer and currently studying vocal performance (opera) in college, I can tell you that open does not always mean relaxed. I STRUGGLED with soo much jaw tension and part of that was because I grew up watching singers sing like that.
      The biggest key about reducing jaw tension is the breath support and your core. They are directly related, so if your core isnt working, you have to compensate... which, for me, was my jaw

      Freya Casey , maybe that advice is good for light high voices but it's not very good for big low voices. You can see how great singers open their mouth at low and high notes. And if you take a look at Jessie Norman, you'll see how she open her mouth at every note😆

      @@thefreyacaseymusic totally agree with that! I've sung many opera roles, and I'm so grateful for this video. There is SO MUCH MISINFORMATION about opera/classical singers because it's in the spotlight now. I'm just so glad you're here! I'm a light lyric coloratura, and I absolutely love creating jaw tension by over extending especially on pure "ah" vowels. It is something I still have to consciously think about. I find more space in my dome and very slightly by opening my jaw a bit more (but the space is mostly above my shelf/cheeks) when I'm warming up from C6 - F6. I find it easier to not create as much space when I'm sing that high and just singing a pure rounded vowel like a laser beam as you said. I think of vowels like golden snitches.: )

My voice is so similar to yours, it’s very light and bright and I feel like I can literally “fly” on very high notes. I love it! My previous teacher told me I should have darkened my voice, forcing my jaw to open in a very unnatural way and it felt horrible. I’m so happy my new teacher is encouraging me to express myself in the most safe and authentic way, letting my voice be just as it is. She told me exactly what you said in this video ☺️ Thank for sharing your precious experience 🌌🎶💗

      You don't really need to "get good at opera" as you put it to play the part of Christine. That is, at the end of the day, musical theatre. So you need to work on your range if you are not already doing so but don't push your limits until your voice, and you, are ready.

    I'm a soprano, but I can't really hit notes above the bar. Or I can hit notes up to G#6 (or makes noise), but anything above G5 starts hurting my throat, and they have no vibrato but they're not breathy either. I know I have a lot of tension in my throat, but I just can't seem to get rid of it. And I have been taking voice lessons many years and thought that now is the time to start practicing high notes (I've always been afraid of them) but no matter what I do they sound and feel horrible. I lift my soft palate, I open my jaw, I (try to) relax and open the throat, I try to support more, I sing in the mask, but nothing really works, they're still awful. What's the problem? :((

    • @thedancingparamedic
      @thedancingparamedic 6 років тому +17

      it sounds like the main thing is when you’re trying to hit those notes, you’re clenching your throat because of the fact that you’re afraid of them and I actually had this same problem which is why I thought I was an alto my whole life (I’m actually a first soprano, go figure). something that worked for me was while singing those high notes, I would squat or shake my hand in front of my face or anything that took my mind off the notes so my vocal cords would relax on their own. just keep doing that until you’re comfortable with them and then to add vibrato you need more breath support and expansion in the diaphragm area. if you’re still taking voice lessons then ask your teacher for more tips because if they’ve been with you for a long time they may know what works best for you

    This is vague misinformation, I’m an opera singer myself. No offense to this video, I’m saying this out of the love of singing.
    If any of you are serious about learning how to sing it’s simple. Anyone can do it with hard work and patience!
    1) learn how to take a deep breathe on command (like how you do when you’re preparing to fall asleep). Then learn how to exhale (like you’ve taken a big yawn and you’re slowly breathing out. Naturally allow your ribs to relax).
    2) You must develop the voice!! Like you develop your biceps. Simply learn to sing everything using the muscle groups you use for talking. First chest muscles (thyroid arytenoid). Then you will be able to learn to lighten that chest voice and sing with Head voice muscles (cricothyroid). Believe me, I’ve learned to sing with the placement technique and it was very harsh and stressful for my voice. Now I sing using these muscle groups and I sound free and in control.
    3) Most importantly listen to the right singers, people who didn’t shy away from using their whole voice (dimitrova, Obrastova, del Monaco, ponsella, etc) to get an understanding of how those notes should sound. You should never sound like Kermit the frog, or feel like your have a big poop.
    Must be learned in this order for optimal results.

    I had 1 classical singing lesson, I was told usually darker voice develops with age. This is mine, and is how I see it's supposed to be, female singing opera. Now learning other and all versions. But nothing is better than nice vibrato when relaxed. To overcome so many details to let voice flow.......

    • @annabaker9173
      @annabaker9173 7 років тому +5

      Kate Oliver people’s voices are changing ever so often. So it isn’t abnormal. But always make sure you are practicing BUT with safe technique. Because you can lose that range.

    • @kateoliver1047
      @kateoliver1047 7 років тому +1

      Anna Baker any techniques advised?

    • @annabaker9173
      @annabaker9173 7 років тому +5

      Kate Oliver start off slow. When going up higher you want to use more of the back muscles in your vocal folds and leans than front. You know you’re doing this if it feel light and airy BUT NOT BREATHY. You know you are using too much front muscle if your voice cracks or it feels like you are shouting and pushing. Now you may not know how to use these leans unless you have training so I wouldn’t recommend trying it out the first few weeks of using right techniques. When you go up the scale the high notes should feel lighter and lighter each ascending note.

    • @kateoliver1047
      @kateoliver1047 7 років тому +1

      Anna Baker ok thanks

    • @annabaker9173
      @annabaker9173 7 років тому +3

      Kate Oliver and remember always that front muscle is for high notes where front is for low and you should keep you larynx low. There are plenty of safe way of brightening the sound without keeping your larynx relaxed. When making the sound brighter while your larynx is low pretend you’re meowing like a cat then it will get so bright it will sound nasally. Don’t use front muscle though. Feel the brightness in your nose but keep the muscle placement correct and larynx low ALWAYS.

    I have a weird voice! I'm 26 years old and my voice is childlike, mumble-like, LOUD( no volume control!), and I can make a very good Steve Urkle impression! But I STILL WANT TO LEARN OPERA! HOW DO I KNOW WHAT KIND MY VOICE WOULD SOUND GOOD AT AND HOW DO I PRACTICE IF I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT?

    I used to sing in my local opera company. In my question I don't think has anything to do with Sopranos. But I almost died last week and I'm trying to remember what range I was in, as apparently it was quite rare for a man, perhaps even women I'm not sure. May I please ask you for some advice. My comfortable range. Where are use my diaphragm efficiently. Is approximately, mid (well sorry that doesn't help much you don't know what my mid range is lol), range. But I confirm I have access to a high range for a male in the upper registry for a male is where I'm most comfortable. I just want to start singing again. Rediscover the joy and health benefits of music and singing with your vocal instrument. Thankyou. I mean once I learnt proper vocal technique. Had my deviated septum repaired, which gave me access to more air. My voice and control took off like a rocket ship. Lol. Have a nice day. Do you disappear into your music? Do you understand what I'm saying when I say I miss home? But I have a much better description if you're willing to let me message you please. Salut! 😪

    Can you do videos about developing head voice in different genres/styles (pop, musical theatre, gospel, jazz, and opera)? Also, how to avoid singing in an operatic style all the time accidentally, like when covering a song from a non-opera genre?

    • @justme9818
      @justme9818 8 місяців тому +1

      My top tips:
      If you're full on operatic as a general rule, imagine talking the songs instead of singing them! It's a really weird shift, it feels so diminutive, but you will still be heard 😉.
      Use an accent - deliberately. I'm Irish. I use a slightly exaggerated Irish accent when singing non-classical music. - It's great because the Irish accent naturally lifts the soft pallet / cheeks and accidentally creates the space I need. I'm not saying use an Irish accent if you don't have one! (They're notoriously difficult to pull off) But find something relative to your own accent that helps you. It'll put you in a different frame of mind. And it'll cover up the training to some degree.
      Oh, and relax!!! Anyone classically trained is usually trying 15 times harder than everyone else!
