Thanks for the tips! I grew up in Dundalk eating crabs from Neptunes (long gone)...but I have since found some great places on the eastern shore. Rock Hall, St. Michael's or Harris Crab House in Kent Narrows would make a nice day trip. For a little crab excursion on the west side of the bay, try the River Shack in Charlestown.
As a Marylander, we grew up on crabs, seasoned with Old Bay and salt. Vinegar in the steaming water, and seasoned in layers. We bought our's by the dozens of bushel depending on the number of people. They were always rinsed with cold water. Bushels were dumped on the concrete and sprayed with the hose. Dead ones were thrown out. It's bound to happen that a few are lost.
I can remember one grabbing my little toe wearing flip flops. Talk about hurt!😂
But man, my family loved them! My uncle took up the tradition after Grandma died. But because his wife wouldn't eat them, he would buy them pre-cooked. We'd eat out on the picnic tables in his backyard. I truly miss those days.
Most of the families are scattered and the elders passed. If I get crabs now, I eat them alone . Hubby won't clean his own, and I refuse to do them for him. 😢
I still do them the old way the way my family did and I know well!!❤❤
I love it...as my Father always said, "if you don't pick'em, you don't eat'em". We were just down Costas Inn in Dundalk and the crabs were AWESOME! Captain Trey's by home in Hunt Valley are real good too! Enjoy, how bout those O'S!?
Sad for you. Hopefully you can get you kids to pick up the tradition.
I hope you all realize most of the crab you're getting from these resturants come from Texas and La because we have so many the price is cheaper.
I got crabs in Baltimore in the 80’s. The doctor gave me some medication to get rid of them
