Gotta say, most everything you said was spot on, until the most important part: after the step to remove the organs, you should use a serrated knife to CUT the crab along side of its width. When you do that, you expose all the cavities at once. Much faster!!
Thanks for the info we have been vacationing in Annapolis for the last 6 years. My uncle is in the Navy and works at the academy some great restaurants in that neighborhood to get crab!!! Im from Michigan always thought Red lobster was the place to eat seafood until i visited Maryland. Im pretty sure ive been missing a lot of meat old bay has replaced my salt shaker. We leave in a week love driving through Pennsylvania 😊!
You should add a small rolling pin to your tool box-- u can use it to roll out the meat from the smaller legs so much easier than trying to pull at the joint-- then u waste no meat!
I remember watching big stainless baskets running on 0verhead rails dumping loads of steamed crabs onto long tables and all the women picking the crabs into small metal cans. That was in the early 60s on the eastern shore.
ok off of docks toward where the land is, theres sometimes crabs there, depending on where you are ofcourse, but we go out there all the time and catch about 8in stone crabs, and eat them there exelent to eat, you just throw them in boiling water for about 10-15 mins, crack off the claws, break them and eat the meat inside its REALLY GOOD!!!!
Another picking style: ua-cam.com/video/2s3S745m1AA/v-deo.html Save the most encrusted seasoning top shell, retain the mustard if desired (Yum). Occasionally dip a morsel into apple cider vinegar then touch the encrusted seasoning for a blend of sweet flavors.😢
so much handiwork, i think its just like one hand and mouth for me. the guts are mad tasty. how do you guys wait for all the meat to be out before eating it? If i was in the video, I would have already eat most of the meat.
why would you take some of the most wholesome and finest natural foods known to man and dip it in a tub of seasoning made in a factory? eat it as it is!
@@dylanlandry4996 Butter is for lobsters and pancakes, apple cider vinegar is natural. Then touch the the meat to remaining seasoning on the top shell for maximum flavors. Never break the legs off, lollypop all 10 legs. Break the picker's fingers if they yank the legs out of the body.
First this you should do is get the guts and gills out before you boil them. But that’s personal preference I don’t like cooking the guts and everything with the meat.
Wow did you really use a mallet wth that's way off and a butter knife ? Really ? Tell this guys from cross the bridge .. yeah its a eastern shore thing
@Brody Brady Yeah... calling bullshit on that one. My grandparents were the proprietors of Captain Earls Crabhouse on West Street in Annapolis, (my grandfather WAS Captain Earl, an Eastern Shore crabber), they used mallets, my mother who when she was of age, got a business degree and helped them manage it used mallets, I was raised to use mallets. My aunts and uncles used mallets, all of us are "true Marylanders".
what do you mean? they are cooked obviously before he started picking and eating. so when (and why) would he need to clean them? not being funny, I'm genuinely curious what other people do... there are so many personal ways that people have; tips, tricks, tales and theories. I want to hear them all 😅
Contrary to popular belief, the "mustard" (or the "green gland" or "tomalley") is not fat, it's actually the crab's hepatopancreas, a main component of the crab's digestive system. The hepatopancreas is a gland made up of very small branched tubes (ramified tubules) located on both sides of the mid-gut in the main body cavity directly under the top shell and functions as both liver and pancreas. It is involved in producing digestive enzymes and is responsible for filtering impurities from the crab's blood. The "mustard" has a strong taste and is eaten by many people who consider it a delicacy. Research shows that chemical contaminants such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxin, mercury, and poison-inhalation hazards (PIHs) accumulate in the crab's fatty tissues and concentrate in the hepatopancreas. The contaminants, which are colorless, odorless and tasteless, and can increase one's chance of developing cancer, neurological impairments and miscarriage. Women of child-bearing age and children under the age of 5 are at particular risk. Crabs caught in advisory areas may contain high levels of these contaminants. If you catch crabs in these areas, it is highly recommended that you eat no more than six blue crabs per week and do not consume the "mustard" or cooking liquid.
People are saying mustard is good but not everyone has to eat it and I think it’s disgusting cause it’s the crab guts for god sake and u wouldn’t eat some pig or sheep guts would u?
He don't know , he might be from North Dakota . My family is from Virginia and I'm from Maryland we definitely know a little something about eating crabs 😊😊😊😊
He did it wrong still looking for the video i watched last year. I remember they peeled the bottom of the shell off before pulling off any legs and all the meat came out with all the legs. This guy did it the way i was taught which is wrong
Oh no no no no. You did not use a hack hammer. And never pull the legs off. They can be used to get meat out. The rest ok. Nice job. However where is the cider vinegar? The only tool you need is a butter knife.
First off, you threw away the mustard! Second you’re usually a mallet ain’t no body got time fo dat. I cringed a little bit everyone does crabs different
+Kenneth Barnes I was just about to say that... Either Maryland or Virginia . The only people I have seen pick crabs correctly are from either one of those two places.... Tools are optional but truly not needed if you know what your doing.
It’s a tutorial video for a reason. Why on earth would someone try to explain something to someone going a million miles a minute. He’s showing how to do it so that way when you get good at it you can slow down or speed up to your own discretion
Seeing all these critical armchair quarterbacks makes me laugh. If y'all know so much better, why are you watching HIS video & not making a better one? Yeah, I thought so.
My Grandmother was a crab picker on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She would of given you hell for using a hammer. Alot of wasted time doing it this way. I would of gone thru 3 or 4 crabs by the time you had one done.
I’m from the east coast and was brought up watching people eat crabs. And I still think it’s a little silly. Too much work for such a little meat. I guess it’s OK if you just like the process of the whole thing.
Every time he put all that good meat to the side I got so anxious. I wanted to jump through the screen of my phone!!!🤣😅🤣😅
Yeah I couldn’t have been him I would’ve been eating the whole video 😆
😂😂 right I just knew he was gone dip something in this imaginary sauce he was talking about ! I would have had to eat all that meat !
kinda some trauma there, but he'll eat it....I hope
Me too
There is no way I could have cracked all that open and not eat it. You killing me here.😂😂😂😂😂
this
I’m such a dork! I watch all these while waiting for crabs to steam. I know how to pick but this is satisfying to me for I don’t know reasons!
Thank you..finally someone who knows how to pick a crab and doesn't waste..thank you
Gotta say, most everything you said was spot on, until the most important part: after the step to remove the organs, you should use a serrated knife to CUT the crab along side of its width. When you do that, you expose all the cavities at once. Much faster!!
Probably one of the best tutorials relating to this subject. Good job
That was a good job, but what about the meat in the "elbow knuckle" and the backfin knuckles?
Thanks for your video. Very thorough. I’ve never had crab before and I’m eating it tomorrow. I didn’t want to look like too much of a noob 😂

How are you not eating as you go?
What's the use of the butter knife?
I scrolled thru the comments just for this one lol😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
The Mustard Is The Good Part, You Ain't A True Md Crab Eater
yum! I love crab and dip it in Old Bay until my lips swell up. Delicious!
alot of Md crab eaters like myself only use a good crab knife. And no dipping sauce unless its more Old Bay❤
היינו במסעדה בתאילנד וקיבלנו סרטנים. לא ידענו איך אוכלים אותם.כתבנו בגוגל והסרטון הזה עלה.בזכותו אכלנו כמו אלופים. תודה.
You do not hit the claws with the mallet. If you absolutely need the mallet, and rarely will, you hit the back of the crab knife with it.
I pick crabs with my hands and a butter knife.
I remember watching big stainless baskets running on 0verhead rails dumping loads of steamed crabs onto long tables and all the women picking the crabs into small metal cans. That was in the early 60s on the eastern shore.
Never wash a crab. You want your hands covered with the cooking spices. And using a dipping sauce is criminal. Just have a good beer nearby.....
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

When is the best time to buy crabs?
Don't buy crabs or crab meat. Go catch your own. Put the commercial crabbers out of business. They are ruining the bay systems.
taking the slow boat to China cleaning that crab dude. nice tutorial but everyone knows eat'n crabs is a marathon sport
Do you have nail polish?
Ihave been a crabber my whole life, thanks for teaching people to eat crabs right, 2:14
you need to make another video in 4k
so much handiwork, i think its just like one hand and mouth for me. the guts are mad tasty.
how do you guys wait for all the meat to be out before eating it? If i was in the video, I would have already eat most of the meat.
I'd probably have to rinse the thing after pulling the guts out. Lol!
why would you take some of the most wholesome and finest natural foods known to man and dip it in a tub of seasoning made in a factory? eat it as it is!
Because that is how Marylanders do it.
Thats why i dip mine in butter
@@dylanlandry4996 Butter is for lobsters and pancakes, apple cider vinegar is natural. Then touch the the meat to remaining seasoning on the top shell for maximum flavors.
Never break the legs off, lollypop all 10 legs. Break the picker's fingers if they yank the legs out of the body.
Its however you like to do it simple!!!
💯
I wish I saw this video tears ago😅 love crab, but didn’t know how to open it properly
First this you should do is get the guts and gills out before you boil them. But that’s personal preference I don’t like cooking the guts and everything with the meat.
Awesome Tutorial 👍🏾👍🏾
Wow did you really use a mallet wth that's way off and a butter knife ? Really ? Tell this guys from cross the bridge .. yeah its a eastern shore thing
Wise Chesapeake / Maryland thermodynamic "culture" 101: How to expend more calories dissecting the thing than you're gonna get back from eating it.
Best crab picking video I’ve tracked down.
Right now, on the dark side of the Moon, there are aliens with ten legs doing this to human beings.
All that work for 1/2 once of crap meat .and that little bit of meat cost how much .
If you were to bring a mallet to my house to eat crabs I would ask you to leave and never come back.
Don’t want your teeth lol

Literal gatekeeping
How come you don’t clean yours first?does it taste better this way?

3:22 we call that '' a** hole of crab'' :)))
as a southern Marylander where the hell is your apple cider vinegar God damn it.... 😆
Not sure this was properly.
ooh! yum! yum! wish I was there to eat it!
He threw away the Mustard.
Lmbo right that one guy that eats crabs like a mf pro eats the mustard
Fairy Lady Here in Jersey we don’t eat the guts, crabs are cleaned prior to cooking in beer, olive oil, old bay and tons of garlic.

@@keithenr who really gives a fuck.
I don't like the mustard or the squiggly internal organs. I tried them once and it was totally disagreeable to me.

Never use anmallet
you don't remove the claws first

A Mallet? What a hack.

thats almost dirty, fella
stuck his thumb right in its asshole.
Gotta remove all the knuckles from the claws before you go inside.
only a baltimore person uses a mallet
thats a small crab.
True crab pickers don't use tools...
Kenneth Barnes ...I use only my bare hands to rip off the shell, break the claws in half...and I 'm a girl.
I'm sure your from Pennsylvania or west va.....
as a commercial you are full of shit. you probably waste as much meat as you get out.... you should just buy a bag of claws and be done with it!
