As someone who had to tear one of these apart recently, actually 2 pf them this is so helpful. A note is that then back lock, the one that wasn't removed, tends to slip out of place a lot. Had to break one of these open 3 times because it continued to slide in place and get stuck when reassembled. Picked mine up in a lot and both were jammed the same way.
I had a Roughcut with a broken gear and assumed it was unfixable. I followed your direct prime Roughcut guide and now with a spring upgrade I confidently removed the worn out ARs and it still fires all 8 darts a decent distance.
I just bought a roughcut and had it seize it within the first day of use. I opened it up to try to fix it, as one does. I like to think that I am fairly mechanically-minded; however, I am sure that I would not have been able to figure out how this blasted thing works (with all the gears and springs and locks) without this video. Just wanted to let you know that your videos (this one, and all of your reassembly guides) are a great resource to the community!
Considering that Coop broke two of the Wardens (Roughtcut replacements) as well I'd call that an epidemic of bad manufacturing, design and cost cutting. Thank you for this video, Captain, and this series, we need to keep these old blasters going if Hasbro's going to replace them with substandard product.
Thank you so much! I recently bought a roughcut and while playing with it I slamfired it and the trigger got stuck in the pulled position and the priming handle got stuck in the middle of the track. I was super worried it would be broken forever but thanks to this video I was able to disassemble and reassemble it in an unjammed state.
Thank you! I took my kids gun apart and cleaned the sand out of it from when the gun took a swan dive into the sand at the park many years ago. Now it is working smoothly once again thanks to you.
Thanks for that. Ive got 3 roughcuts (I like the Shotguns) but never took one apart for fear of the complex internals. Having seen this I'm thinking, its not so bad after all. This series is great and I am sure it will prove useful to future fixers.
Very detailed and informative video, one that is much appreciated. I got a Rough Cut/Roughcut (white, for what it may or may not matter, but it's exactly the same in every way as the one in this video) a couple years ago from a garage sale on the dirt cheap that a couple days ago, I finally got around to tearing apart and tinkering with rather than leave it as it was. It's a beater, it's scuffed and worn and shows its years of use before I ever had it - but hey, considering it was a dirt cheap garage sale find, I hit the lottery the thing actually works. Especially considering how notorious these things are for breaking with the gears and what all. I was looking to mod it initially, but really there's apparently not much you can do to these things that doesn't substantially decrease their lifespan. There's an 8 shot mod which is kind of cool that makes all 8 shots fire at once - but it's largely useless beyond amusing, since it loses a LOT of power firing them all at once and it's more equivalent of vomiting foam darts on someone five feet away. And if you're that close...you can just as easily hit them with one or two darts, not all EIGHT and wasting all your ammo at once. I did take apart the barrels further than shown in the video and duct taped over little ports inside that "supposedly" adds a tiny bit more power, but it's marginal if it does. Kept the air restrictors (as removing them is what causes the 8 shots at once), kept the pegs inside the barrels (some people remove them for more air flow and thus more power - I keep them because they act as a guide for darts going out, making them more accurate). "Just use a flathead screwdriver and pry", the guide I was using said, as I cranked and cranked and cranked to no avail, and wound up snapping the plastic pegs that slot into one another. Had to superglue the barrels back together when I was done. I even got physical with some wire cutters, pliers, a razor blade, and superglue, and I cut a deep notch behind the rear sight and retrofitted a Maverick rear sight (which had to be cut from a previously destroyed parts Maverick's slide and pieced together, since it's molded as part of the plastic and isn't meant to come off...but that didn't stop me), which is SUBSTANTIALLY better than the absolutely HORRIBLE stock rear sight. Not that one will really use sights much on a Nerf gun - but it's cool to have anyway, and if you're actually going to properly aim, the Maverick rear sight (I call it the "combat sights" mod) is just so much better to use, and looks much cooler, too. Where my problems really started was when I put the gun back together, tried firing it...and only one side actually fired. So I took the gun back apart, started tinkering and troubleshooting...somehow, I still don't know exactly how, I jammed the mechanism and couldn't figure out the slide lock on the side. So I took the main mechanism apart, and...holy hell. Talk about a disaster. I had zero idea what I was doing, stuff kept falling out, and it took me around an hour and a half just to finally figure out how to get it all together again, trial and erroring where every little piece goes after a painstaking and frustrating process. It was an absolute nightmare I do not want to go through again, trying to get it all together without little pieces constantly falling out, and I got so pissed at one point. I nearly lost it trying to get it all back together. I figured it all out (much to my own surprise) - except this one tiny peg I for the life of me could NOT figure out where in the hell it went, which turned out to be a roller behind the top set of gears. That much I learned from watching your video earlier after giving up trying to figure out what it was or where it was supposed to go. Seriously, thank you for this video. That was a massive help just for one little piece, and I did greatly enjoy the in-depth explanation of what everything actually is or does, beyond just showing how everything comes apart and goes back together. I managed to figure out 99% of this without the video, and I would seriously NOT recommend it. Anyway. Gun's back together, works fine now. Still don't know why it was only firing out of one side before, but it's fine now. Maybe something came loose when I was originally putting it back together. The Rough Cut/Roughcut's a great little Nerf gun. Not highly moddable without ensuring it'll break in five minutes, and CERTAINLY not a gun you want to give to your friends if they don't know how to use it, but the muzzle loading feature is nice, two shots at once works very well for double chances of hitting, the pump feature is entertaining, and the gun is just compact enough to go in a backpack or something or somehow concealing for a surprise Nerf war with a buddy. Just don't force it if it's stuck, and whatever you, don't take apart the main mechanism if you don't have to. Leave it alone if it works. SERIOUSLY.
Small update, actually. So I apparently didn't test the shotgun all that well, because I did not actually test the slide lock when you pull it part way back. It works...until you try to move the slide, and it absolutely will not move in either direction, and the trigger doesn't do anything. Not even holding the trigger and attempting to move the slide does anything. After taking apart the gun and experimenting, I decided - screw it; I removed all but the one lock when the pump goes all the way forward after fully charging it. I really couldn't figure out WHY it kept locking up when pulled halfway, despite everything being where it should be, and since the locks aren't necessary, I deemed them problematic and just removed them. So now the gun ONLY locks when charging and going all the way forward, at which point pulling the trigger properly releases the mechanism. Gun will NOT lock if you pull it part of the way, and spring pressure just pushes the pump back forward. The solution?...just don't short stroke it, just like a real shotgun. Pull it back all the way like you mean it with each shot. Granted, you could say the same things with the locks still there - but at least the gun doesn't completely seize up and force you to take it apart if you accidentally do it. Should be quite reliable for slam firing now because of it, too, since it shouldn't risk the obvious problem of snagging and breaking. On a random note, for whatever reason, the single fire works WAY better now after removing all but the forward slide lock. I have zero idea why this is, but now it's infinitely easier to pull off a single shot, as the first shot and the second shot are much further apart on the trigger pull. It wasn't like this up to this point, and I really can't explain it. Either way, another big thanks to the video and how informative it is, as it was because of the video's prior explanation that I knew what to remove to fix the weird half pull jamming issue.
thanks for this guide i was planning on making a direct prime roughcut after a part in the gears cracked and I was trying to put back the plunger tubes back onto the mechanism

Could you do an in depth explanation of what you think is the limit of nerf blasters? Through your infinite wisdom, what do you think would go into making the "best" blaster? I wonder if it'd be possible to make a blaster that shot a virtually solid stream of darts something like an inch between eachother (although I guess that kind of rate of fire would be very impractical).
No, because there is no "best" blaster. "Best" is subjective and varies depending on dozens of factors. As for the limit? With what constraints? We literally have spaceships. If you wants you could build a blaster that fired a literal solid stream of foam. The most I have built is 20 dps. That is an absurd rate of fire. I have heard of people getting close to 30.
@@CaptainXavier Sorry I just realised that it was a bad question. I guess the question that I really wanted answered was an analysis of what can improve the performance of a springer? Hi captain can you do the long shot next please I’m about to get one and I want to paint it but I don’t know how to take it a apart and put it back together. Thank you for your time
@@CaptainXavier Yeah metal is expensive. Right now this blaster is best to remain stock form. I also wanted to do a half dart mod. But the dart posts are way too difficult to remove.
bought a new roughcut for $10 at walmart. Everything works except slam fire. Besides the mechanisms near the trigger, is there anything else u recommend me to check?
Not with so little information. The catch could be worn, the catch spring could be worn out, the plunger rod could be warped or cracked. Could be a number of things.
No. I have not been taking commissions for almost 2 years. I simply do not have time. That is why I started doing build guides. So people can build their own.
Could be a number of things. I would open the blaster up and use this guide to figure out what went wrong. Whatever you do, don't try to force it. You will just end up breaking it.
Mine won't open for sh>t I took off all the screws and so far it was easy to pull apart but under the grip mechanism that primes the gun just isn't pulling apart
Very hard. Without the mechanical advantage of the gears it would be very hard to prime. And having a hammer with enough pull to actually pull the plungers all the way back would be next to impossible.
my roughtcut still doesnt work and i reassembled exactly the same. the slam fire bar snaps back so i cant activate the catch and it keeps doing that after i prime so i cant release im thinking of giving up i've tried everything
@@CaptainXavier the roughcut i have didnt come with a slide lock. and i figured out the problem but i dont know why its happening. i think the lock helps the slam fire bar stay in
I have a problem with the reloader of my gun is gets jammed again and again i have tried to to fix it but when i re assembled it hot reloaded but again got jammed
I know this is an old video but if anyone sees this comment could you please tell me what kind of screws I'd need for the outer shell? I lost the bag I put them into while renovating my room and I plan to order a few screws online for my roughcut as well as other projects. I assume most of the blaster uses 3mm wide 10mm long screws, but if anyone could provide me the exact dimensions (Length, width, thread count, etc.) or link me to some replacement screws I would really appreciate it.
Both of my zombie strike roughcuts got their priming handles stuck halfway and their triggers stuck. They're unmodified and I don't know why this is happening. Does anyone know how to fix this?
Well the only thing that could be causing the trigger to lock up would be the slamfire link, as that is the only thing that interacts with the trigger. The Slamfire link in turn interacts with the catches and the priming bar. The priming bar interacts with the plungers and the gears. The plungers interact with the catches and the springs. The gears interact with the priming handle. So your problem is somewhere in there. If any one of those parts get caught, stuck, or misaligned it will effect all of the others.
@@CaptainXavier what ever we both know that even if they do I can't get my hands on them but they can make an acceptable guide rode spring for a lego pistol
@@CaptainXavier yeah funny story about guide rode springs I broke four of the technique pieces that have a spring in them just because I didn't want to make the slide use rubber bands and it didn't work well and I regret braking them

Hi captain can you do the long shot next please I’m about to get one and I want to paint it but I don’t know how to take it a apart and put it back together. Thank you for your time
I address this in the video. You have to vote in the survey. I pick which ones I do next based on the survey.
@@CaptainXavier oh I opologize I wasn’t aware
Thank you for this
Please do the mediator next I bought a broken one and wanted to fix its so please btw love the vids keep up the good work❤️
How many pieces does it have in total? Not repeating the same ones?
Can you do the next one a longshot reassembly?
Mine broke and I don't know how to fix it.
It is on the list. I will get to it eventually.
You saved my ass, thank you!
Was going to mod this with a spring upgrade. Not possible due to plastic gearbox.
Yup. Someone tried to start a kickstarter for metal gears but it fell thru.
@@CaptainXavier Yeah metal is expensive. Right now this blaster is best to remain stock form. I also wanted to do a half dart mod. But the dart posts are way too difficult to remove.
@@CaptainXavier Does removing the dart post affect performance of the smart AR?
I had missing gear teeth and cracked gear casing. Luckily ebay provided a helples- ahem, willing donor.
bought a new roughcut for $10 at walmart. Everything works except slam fire. Besides the mechanisms near the trigger, is there anything else u recommend me to check?
Nope.
On my rouchcut the bottom row of darts rarely shoots and sometimes the darts would pop out. Any way to fix this?
Sounds like you have an air leak. Probably one of the ARs above it not resealing. Might check their springs.
@@CaptainXavier thank you
hey Xavier my roughcut is broken the left side sometime doesn’t catch I have tried cleaning off the catch from all the lube on the catch any ideas?
Not with so little information. The catch could be worn, the catch spring could be worn out, the plunger rod could be warped or cracked. Could be a number of things.
Try taking out the main spring and working the internals with the shell open and seeing if you can spot the issue.
Hi cap it’s me again. Do you remember how to do the nerf kronos shotgun
Yes...
@@CaptainXavier if I send you a nerf Kronos and the 12 and 7 round mags can you possibly make one for me
No. I have not been taking commissions for almost 2 years. I simply do not have time. That is why I started doing build guides. So people can build their own.
@@CaptainXavier oh ok also when are you going to sell stuff on your Etsy page
@@tristankinish345 ...never...my Etsy page has been dormant for at least 3 years.
Can you do a Monday mod tips reassembly for the mega criterion
Didn't watch the video all the way thru I see...for shame! ;P
I did wach the full thing I just got called over by my mom so I dident knowtice the last bit
Why my reload function is stuck and how to avoid that plz help
Could be a number of things. I would open the blaster up and use this guide to figure out what went wrong. Whatever you do, don't try to force it. You will just end up breaking it.
@@CaptainXavier thanks
Mine won't open for sh>t I took off all the screws and so far it was easy to pull apart but under the grip mechanism that primes the gun just isn't pulling apart
How hard would it be to have a hammer instead of a pump?? So then it could be a side arm
Very hard. Without the mechanical advantage of the gears it would be very hard to prime. And having a hammer with enough pull to actually pull the plungers all the way back would be next to impossible.
The small gear in my roughcut broke so I’m thinking getting a metal one
If you find one, let me know.
@@CaptainXavier you have the same issue?
No, but I would still love metal gears for a roughcut.
my roughtcut still doesnt work and i reassembled exactly the same. the slam fire bar snaps back so i cant activate the catch and it keeps doing that after i prime so i cant release im thinking of giving up i've tried everything
It is entirely possible that either something is actually broke...or you are still reassembling it wrong.
@@CaptainXavier the roughcut i have didnt come with a slide lock. and i figured out the problem but i dont know why its happening. i think the lock helps the slam fire bar stay in
I believe you are correct. It might be required for it to function correctly.
I have a problem with the reloader of my gun is gets jammed again and again i have tried to to fix it but when i re assembled it hot reloaded but again got jammed
The reloader? Are you talking about the priming handle on the Roughcut? Or a different blaster entirely?
I know this is an old video but if anyone sees this comment could you please tell me what kind of screws I'd need for the outer shell? I lost the bag I put them into while renovating my room and I plan to order a few screws online for my roughcut as well as other projects. I assume most of the blaster uses 3mm wide 10mm long screws, but if anyone could provide me the exact dimensions (Length, width, thread count, etc.) or link me to some replacement screws I would really appreciate it.
Foamblastshop.com and probably OutofDarts.com sell replacement screws
Hey, I really need help. The only problem I’m having is the gears jamming all up. Can you help me please?
Sure, I'll just go film a detailed video on how disassemble and reassemble it...
@@CaptainXavier very funny
Well, I'm not sure what more you want from me.
hey capt : im from the Philippines please do a segment on nerf mega mastadon
Both of my zombie strike roughcuts got their priming handles stuck halfway and their triggers stuck. They're unmodified and I don't know why this is happening. Does anyone know how to fix this?
...did you even bother to watch this video?
Yes, but I don't understand why the trigger's stuck
@@pkrankin2512 did you take it apart, check to make sure everyone is properly aligned, lubed, and unobstructed and put it back together?
@@CaptainXavier I'm currently trying to fix my orange one, I haven't put it back together yet.
Does the AR springs fit in technique axles
Yes, but they would be very loose.
@@CaptainXavier what ever we both know that even if they do I can't get my hands on them but they can make an acceptable guide rode spring for a lego pistol
@@moonchildhobi5552 I doubt it, honestly, way to weak for that.
@@CaptainXavier BTW thanks and sorry because I didn't say that earlier
@@CaptainXavier yeah funny story about guide rode springs I broke four of the technique pieces that have a spring in them just because I didn't want to make the slide use rubber bands and it didn't work well and I regret braking them
Would this make a good masterkey
Yes. It was actually the first blaster I ever made into a masterkey.
@@CaptainXavier ok thank you and thanks to this video I will be able to make one for my stryfe using a retaliator barrel
I just need to find a roughcut
Lmao thankfuck this video exists. My daughter broke mine, it only slam fires now and I have two bits left over after I "fixed" it 🤣
Note: i dont think the camo version has that intricate lock you keep saying isn't totally necessary (unless it disappeared into the sock void), seems Hasbro agreed with you
Have you seen it
Hi cap
better to just remove all the locks
or else one mistake and it's dead.
