Dude can you do a Q&A? (Preferably live). I want to know how and where did you learn how to fix stuff? It’s like you’re born with an engineering mind, you keep your cool, always patient and never get flustered. Unlike me who has tantrum when I run up against a problem, then try’s to resolve the problem with a hammer and when that doesn’t work sit sulk till one of my buddies shows up to give a hand.
Turn the damn key!
that guy that had the atalian yatch was b is for build
what about getting a closed sea water tank.get a large 100 gal plastic water tank, pump in some sea water and make a way to take in the water from the tank and recirculation system that will cool the engine
Bit creepy tyring to get people to buy medication from some dodgy company
Im a marine mechanic, both those engines spin the same direction. The Mercruiser MPI engines were never reverse rotation. The counter rotation is performed in the transmission/drive not the engine like older engines used to do.
It seemed indeed a bit strange to assemble 2 differend rotation engines...
I'm not a marine mechanic but I used to rebuild starters for a remanufacturing company. People would bring in starters off of boats and the counter people would tell them that it's a special starter built specifically for boats. When I was given the first "marine" starter to rebuild, I asked my foreman what was different about a "marine" starter. "Not a damned thing but we can charge double because the boat owner thinks it's special."
@@phlodel haha i like your answer!! Terrific!!!😀🤣😂
@ChrisWright - What's your opinion on gas vs diesel engines for boats like this one? Can they be swapped without making expensive changes?
@@phlodel well a marine starter and a automotive starter are quite a bit different. Most marine starters are sealed and use corrosion resistant materials like stainless fasteners. There is reverse and standard rotation starters as well. But the reverse rotation starters are typically only for the older powerplant manufacturers and mostly fell out of use in the 80s. Because manufacturers like Mercruiser figured out that it was way more cost effective to have the drive/transmission control the counter rotation needed in a dual powerplant setup.
BOAT = Break Out Another Thousand. Thank you for honoring the vets. They are the nation’s most forgotten heroes. Put a socket n breaker bar on the crank and see if it spins, don’t damage another starter unless you know the crank spins.

In that type of cooling system, the sea water doesn't get into the engines directly, but it goes through the heat exchangers and those can be corroded by sea water even if the engines aren't. But even in that case, replacing the heat exchangers is way cheaper and easier than replacing the engines. You also don't want a failed heat exchanger in the middle of the ocean.
Always do a full hull inspection before doing anything engines.
A free boat here had $1000s spent on it, only to discover massive cracks below the fore deck. There was good reason it had been abandon.
Yep, bang on...you need to get a engineers survey done. Engines are just one small part on a boat this size.

I would always start a project by throughly cleaning it first. Not only does it make working on the project cleaner and easier to work on but it gives you an opportunity to find things that may either need to be ordered in order to keep the project rolling in a timely manner or it may expose something that needs to be fixed before the things you thought you you were going to do first.

Use water before starting and use a breaker bar to hand turn it to see if it even turns over 1st. If she moves your in a good condition, use iridium long life will be good for 100,000 miles. Great video keep it up
Agree. I wouldn't crank that starter until I put a long handled breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt and made sure it would turn over.
Iridium? 100,000 mile plug swap? What pipe are you smoking.
First, they dont measure boat engines in "miles"
Second, even if you did, leaving plugs in for that long you risk having them corrode to the heads.
the impellers are already shot if they run this for a bit isnt going to hurt much as they have to be replaced anyway
@@pedrotski Iridium plugs are able to last that long because they dont corrode as much. Theyre expensive but you get what you pay for
Iridium plugs are garbage unless the motor was factory equipment with them. Throwing them in a Chevy motor from the 90s will do nothing.

Hi from Cincinnati, Ohio!!! 8 year USCG Veteran here. Medically disabled. So, I can't serve anymore. But, don't have nearly the struggle as my other brothers & sisters.
Never use automotive parts, especially the starter and alternator, in a boat. Marine electrical parts are designed to be spark free. If you should have a gas leak a spark from the starter, or alternator can cause an explosion. Please use only Marine parts, yes more money, but it's much safer.
Marine parts are also built to take the constantly damp environment
I would be having both engines out. There could be all sorts of nasties going on and easy access lets you get everything properly sorted out.
I'm beside myself when he didn't know if the engine was seized. I't almost as if he has no experience working on engines.
Yes really important. I see boat fires happen often, and its usually caused by gas fumes. And when they start, they're violent and deadly.
The first thing I would have done was remove the large hatch if possible to give better access, especially with your recently healed leg. Crazy to try and work in that small area when you have that large area to be able to work. Also, throw a breaker bar on the crank bolt and turn the left engine over by hand to see if it turns freely.
I wondered why he didn't do that, doesn't seem like it could be all that difficult to open, and to close again after.
Exactly makes no sense to not remove the access hatch

The cooling system is called a heat exchanger, before you order a new starter put a bar on the crank pulley and see if the engine turns by hand.
Can you explain to me how the heat exchanger system works? I guess my question is, what does the heat exchanger cool that the radiators don't? I understand how a vehicle engine/radiator work. I'm just genuinely curious.
@@TheVenom8343 a radiator is a heat exchanger
Right, a radiator does it in a car, but as you can imagine…not a whole lot of air flows under decks to cool the fluid off, soooo you wrap what is the boats radiator in a jacket, or chamber that floods fresh cool salt, or regular lake water all around the radiator, cooling off the antifreeze as it cycles through the engine. The now hot seawater is pumped out, and cold back in by impellers in the outdrives (where the propeller is) and “voila” nothing overheats and the water jackets in the engine block don’t get all gunked up
@@TheVenom8343 in a car radiator fresh air passes through gaps in tubes to cool down coolant. Since there is no air passing through front of engine in a boat heat a exchanger basically has tubes running throughout where water coming from either the lake or ocean passes through and thus exchanges heat out of the radiator.

Been a professional marine diesel mechanic for Ringpower CAT, worked at ship yards, been all over. Haven’t heard of those gas engines having a different rotation, though it’s common in big bore diesels. I believe the port transmission is a counter rotating gear... parts should be interchangeable between the two engines. I’ve even replaced one of those “vdrive” transmissions in that exact boat. Little ZF gear. The transmission cooler failed and pumped salt water into the transmission.. love seeing other people doing it. Glad I’m a captain now

Turn the engine over with a wrench and see which way the prop turns. That should confirm which way the engine is supposed to move. Also that it isn't seized.
To stupid to try anything that would be considered common sense or basic fault finding
One look at the props told me they turn different directions.
That is a good idea but the gearbox is probably going to be on a centrifical clutch so the engine will have to be on in order for the clutch to engage
@@stevegiboney4493 Yes, but the direction might be flipped in one transmission so the engines can be the same. Or not. It's a rather important detail to know.

Also, there's probably a impeller pump on it as well which will burn if it doesnt get any water.
If the coolant was low, I would just go ahead and replace both water pumps and impellers because you don't know if maybe it got slightly hot and cracked the housing or it corroded enough to start a slow leak. The engines usually turn the same way. The transmissions take care of the counter rotating props.
Be that as it may, if you're going to run the engines for any amount of time, you'll need water in the intake strainers to avoid burning up the salt water impellers. You MAY be able to get enough flow for idle RPM by sticking a hose in the filter housings after CLOSING the seacocks.
You don't want to have to go fishing for impeller bits in the heat exchangers. That's no fun AT ALL.
Actually, there's only a couple of styles of marine transmissions that will do that. The Borg-Warner Twindisc, and the new ZF models. The vast majority of twin engine boats have 1 counter rotating engine
@@sethbarnes7608 every single Borg Warner Velvet Drive will do that as well. Almost all of the Hurth (now sold as ZF) transmissions will do exactly the same. I could keep going: there is an extremely small minority of transmissions that are not symmetrical. I do not know what section of the industry you're referring to but I strongly suspect it's local to you or that you have in mind a specific subset of boats.
Yep your right. I have fished out thousands of bits of rubber impeller over the years because owners too cheap to replace them. And they wonder why they have over heat problems. 😆 🤣 😂
@@w124mercedes7 All of them are too cheap to replace them, until their gave out, and then they realised it's waaay cheaper to buy and replace a new impeller than having a mechanic open and clean their heat exchanger! At least that's my experience as a boat mechanic hahah

Thanks , I’m really into this journey. I hope the project does not get sidelined as is the case with the other site you mentioned, the strainers you have are probably 2 for engines , 3rd fir generator, and you might have another (4th) if you have air con . The caps might have been left off from a cooling system flush of the sea water side where the strainer is mated to an adaptor to feed in fresh or treated water. , treated if you are winterising or descaling . You probably know all that anyway 😆
You might think about running a product called barnacle buster into a sea strainer, into your heat exchanger. Clogged heat exchangers cause the most overheating issues on engines with heat exchangers. Vinegar works good I hear also, but have only used BB mentioned.
Hi enjoying your vids a lot. Am a disabled vet but was in the British army. What some vets could do with is a vacation, many are on their own and are unable to go on a good vacation.
