I 100% agree with your points I’d also like to add a little note about the animatronic designs of FNAF 1, because they genuinely look like characters that were meant to entertain children, with the slight uncanny factor that alot of mascots of their time had. I think what makes them so scary is not their design itself but rather the concept of having a vengeful spirit haunt these machines that were meant to bring joy. The idea of these inanimate objects coming to life is sold rlly well through the visuals and audio of FNAF 1, just seeing Bonnie or Chica standing still while staring into your soul in complete darkness is haunting.
I completely agree. FNAF 1 struck the perfect balance between making the animatronics look unnerving while also making them look normal enough that you could imagine them being used in an actual pizzeria. In my opinion, NONE of the sequels managed to strike this balance to the same extent as the original game. The animatronics in the sequels either look too friendly or they look too obviously creepy to the point where you could never imagine them being used in a pizzeria to entertain children. The only game where making the animatronics look overtly terrifying worked was FNAF 4. This was because the game took place within the nightmare of a child so it made sense as to why the animatronics would look so menacing.
also, the lifeless design of their eyes and the way the center pupils popped out at you but the surrounding area was all pitch black always gave me the creeps
My favorite part is how phone guy makes you feel safe with the company he provides and when the call ends around a couple hours in right as the night really picks up it leave you feeling so alone. So much more than being alone from the start. Not only are you alone but you’re alone and LOST the only company you had moments ago
I wanna say fnaf 2 also shares that atmosphere. That terrifying clank noise you hear in the hallway, and the massive gaping hallway in front of you is enough to make you feel in easy
3:25 Cam 4B is actually the only camera you need to look at. Freddy won't move if you look directly at 4B while he's there, while you can look at any camera to keep Foxy still.
For me just keep the camera on where ever freddy is and he stays still when he laughs he moves so it'll be easy to watch but 4b works for night 6 and 7 tho

This atmosphere is what I was expecting from the movie! After seeing the film twice, I’m still disappointed that none of the creepy atmospheric sounds or faces like the blacked out eyes or lumbering walking cycles were used in the film. People make excuses like it’s pg 13 but the game didn’t even use any sort of gore. Imagine Mike falling asleep in the office and because he hasn’t been watching the cameras he wakes up to the raspy moaning sounds of chica or Bonnie and as soon as he opens his eyes BOOM jump scare and Mike has to fight that animatronic off, but no instead we get animatronics building table forts and doing emotes like 👍🏻. I liked the movie and I’ve been a fan since 2014 but I’m not afraid to admit I was a bit disappointed with the scare factor.
I’m currently working on a review for the movie so I’ll keep it brief but I agree! I think FNaF didn’t need the R rating to be scarier, it definitely could have used more atmosphere to induce horror. I think that’s it’s only major flaw honestly
I feel that the 1st and the 2nd games still had something to prove. You need to remember the creator (Scott) did this because his game before this failed massively. I think he gave it his all. Additionally the whole game benefited from simplicity. The more simple it was, the more effective and almost serious like it became. It just kinda got.. franchised and too many expectations came in as a result. But, I guess that helps the best games shine even more.
Amazing video and great in depth look at Fnaf's strong points. I hope you get as much attention as you deserve tho, you deserve a lot more views and followers!!
To be honest even Scott himself had said FNaF 1 was lightning in a bottle. I don't think he really wanted to bother trying to replicate what we got from that first game because he didn't seem all that confident he even could. He says something like this in the Dawko interview.
What an excellent video. I am back on the FNAF hype train after the movie and I have been binge watching and came across this video and others like it, I am surprised how well produced this one is. Keep it up :)
Nice video! I think FNAF 4 still relies on buildup, as the setting and the gameplay contribute a lot to building tension. The jumpscares are emphasized, since the game kind of forces you to confront them by relying on audio cues, but jumpscares are still a direct consequence of making a mistake. And the panic that overtakes you as the threats ramp up, the lights flash, and you constantly have to turn your back on very active threats that can enter the room at any moment, make you that much more likely to make a mistake. I think it doesn't do as many things as FNAF 1 in atmosphere, but what it does works very well in a different way. No game is for everyone though!
That’s completely fair! I didn’t go to much into it in the video but I honestly agree with a lot of what you said. I think it builds tension well but to me the way they incorporate the jumpscares just isn’t very satisfying. I think the best way I can put it is that it lacks the dread of FNaF 1 when you know it’s coming, since they jump you as soon as you turn the light on it’s much more abrupt. You don’t know you made a mistake until the jumpscare itself, while in FNaF 1 you can see the mistake you’ve made before dying which induces said sense of dread. That being said, FNaF 4 does work for a lot of people that way and I’m glad it works for you! Like you said, just comes down to personal preference.
Been a fan of fnaf since 2014... I was a little disappointed that the movie did not feel like the atmosphere of the first game, the mysterious, ominous feeling was just missing... and the friendly animatronics just removed all the scare factor about them, but I still liked the movie and appreciate Scott's work for it cause I know how hard he worked for it as well, not the one I was expecting and imagining when I was little, but was still satisfied :)
My thoughts exactly. Enjoyed the film for what it was, it was definitely entertaining, and I can’t say I was legitimately disappointed, but damn… if we had been given a super intense horror-thriller with the dark unsettling atmosphere of the first game, with hints of a darker backstory underneath the base scares… Obviously it would have felt a little patronising to the fans, as they already know the backstory, but it would certainly have made for a better standalone film and unfamiliar more casual audiences could probably digest it much better and it would flow more naturally into a sequel that could flesh out the elements of the story. Doesn’t even have to stick to the original timeline of the games, it just needs to reveal the lore like those original games did, slow and steady, letting the audience piece it together. The film we got was clearly made with the fans in mind, and that’s cool, but imagine not knowing a bloody thing about the series and this random “William Afton” name is given so much fanfare, you’d be totally confused as to why _that_ detail in particular was of any significance considering we hadn’t met Afton earlier in the film.
@@horrorfanandy4647 yeah I totally agree with you, it just seems like the atmosphere of the first game is lifeless, giving this really dark and mysterious vibe to it, while in the movie it's somewhere in between, but it was definitely more like "full of life" if you get what I mean. The building is also a lot more colorful, which isn't a bad thing, It's made to be more realistic and I get that, to look like a real pizzeria, I just kinda wished they were going for the gray walls like in fnaf 1, they're adding that abandoned touch and feeling, like it's clear that the place is not what it seems to be, and those hanging wires from the ceiling too, they just kinda missed some details but Idk. Still mostly the thing I was disappointed about was that we didn't see the iconic toreador march anywhere in the film, while it was in the trailer (to probably promote the movie) instead we got The Romantics "Talking In Your Sleep" and it's an 80s song so it made sense. But I wished we could see a scene where Freddy played his iconic music box, while Mike is in shock and confusion, somewhere in the dining area or just exploring the place, panicking rushing to the generator in the office, tripping, going unconscious and then his watch beeps and turns like 6:00 AM (It was going to be a great reference to the games in my opinion) although I know that the movie was based more of the books. but yeah I just can't really seem to accept that the long-awaited movie from my childhood exists, it's unreal, though it had some flaws, I'm really glad and happy with what we got in the end.
phone guy for me was comforting during the first few nights, hearing someone elses voice support you was nice, and having that ripped away from us in the fourth night was perfect. The only other alive human in the game is now gone, and we are left alone with just the drone of the fan and murderous animatronics. And on the fifth night, we hear the ring, hoping to hear his voice somehow, but it's replaced by the animatronics unsettling speaking. It gave us security, then took it out from under us and that's such a good way to do horror.
I'm really glad to see a video about this topic! I was nodding along to every single thing you said. The atmosphere is definitely my single favourite aspect amongst every classic FNAF game. 1, 2, 3, and 4 all have absolutely TERRIFYING atmospheres, yet they all feel unique. I'd love to hear you talk about some of those as well, it's really great hearing you talk specifically about each aspect that make the games into what they are.
@@gungun5845 I don't think FNaF 4 clears FNaF 1 lmao. I think it's definitely one of the best but it's not better than the original. I stated my opinion. I never said that it's objectively the best. I clearly began my comment with "I think". Did you miss that part or something?
@@gungun5845fnaf 4 tries too hard to be scary . realisticly it's not going to happen in real life. however mascot robots that are an aspect of a pizzaria, definetly sounds more compelling because you can see that there's something wrong, it's something unknown
This is exactly what the fnaf movie missed. These clearly not alive robots, stiff and yet seem full of life. You can't pin point it. The lifeless yet alive faces. The clunky movements, the rasphy breathing. They move in the shadows. It is a genius combination. The uncanny valley is captured perfectly. Such simple things like giving the robots moving eyebrows and expressive faces in the movie ruins that principle. They move, yet when you look at them they're like a statue that has never moved an inch.
god, i wish fnaf would go back to its roots someday. I completely lost interest after FNAF 3/4 when they started heavily leaning into sci-fi stuff and gave animatronics personalities and voices.
It's not just atmosphere, it's the fear of the unknown. With every new fnaf game, you lose out on the "uncanny" feeling you got in 1. You grow used to the characters; accustomed to their shenanigans, and you know more about their lore. 4 was good because it has the buildup in forcing you to rely heavier on a new sense- hearing, to stay alive. The 1st game still retains a level of fear after playing because it always keeps you at arm's length: the more unpredictable the characters are, the less you know about them and the reason they're hunting you, the less you know in general, the scarier everything is. Fnaf 1 was created when scott still didn't really HAVE some deep lore about them. You took a job and these animatronics are doing things they're not supposed to and ACTUALLY trying to kill you in some cruel but consistent way. In fnaf games, they excel in 2 areas: when you're starting out and dont know the behaviors of the animatronics and feel you MUST engage with the cameras to validate they have unusual behavior, and when you know everything about the game and are trying 4/20 mode and the game has become a knowledgeable twitch reaction, survival, and resource management game. Fnaf will NEVER reach the heights of terror it used to inflict, because the characters are no longer kept at arm's reach; you know too much about them and the who? why? what? when? where? how many? for them. It would need a pseudo reset. A different, but somewhat familiar story somewhere else. The books encourage this by introducing some soul power or something. Set up a completely different situation in-universe, maybe retire animatronics for something else, and create different behaviors and a new big bad to replace afton, IF there's a big bad and not just unique situations. Animatronics aren't scary because you're USED to them and understand WHY they do what they do. You need fear of the UNKNOWN if you wanna and then a feeling of helplessness to be scared again.
Honestly I miss this old FNAF. I miss the horror that characterized this franchise in 2014 and 2015. Now is losing its horror charm and identity, the movie just confirmed it.
Fnaf 3 and 4 was top notch in atmosphere. With security breach that fell off hard. “The rest of the series never reaches its height in terms of horror”, FNAF 3? FNAF 3 excels at atmosphere and being unsettling
I actually REALLY like FNAF 4's atmosphere. I think what sets it apart from the other FNAF games is that it uses pitch darkness incredibly well. Humans generally fear the unknown, hence why alot of people are scared of the dark. We don't know how close or far the animatronics are when they are in the hallways. Only when shining the light down the hallway will we truly know whether they're right up our face or not, but by then it would probably be too late. We have to rely on very subtle breathing sounds which we can easily mistake for the ambient sounds in our own rooms. Visually from what we can see in the light, it's a room of a child. It evokes a sense of nostalgia, but also uneasiness since it's midnight; a liminal space if you will. An otherwise unthreatening setting really makes the horrific designs of the animatronics pop out ALOT more.
Fnaf 1 seperate from its community and all of the memes is a legitimately good game. Its not a product of its time nor is it dated. If it was released today it would probably blow up in just the same way.
This video is just amazing in so many ways, and I really hope you do get to blow up, I don't think the atmosphere could ever truly be recreated but they could definitely come close. Is there any way I could donate to the channel?
Very glad you mentioned that scruffy video, I remember watching it and wanting more in depth reviews of why fnaf worked in the first place, and this is exactly it
The movie needed more audio making things creepy. Instead it felt like a neutered FNAF 1. The game about jump scares had 3 jump scares in its movie. Once it hit the part of the animatronics being friendly it felt like a SFM movie it felt like a fan fiction. The setting was great and the actual animatronics were amazing. It was a fun movie but man it could’ve been so much scarier. I’ve seen PG-13 movies that still have blood and dark elements and the FNAF movie barely had any. I think after FNAF 1-4 the series slowly lost its identity of being scary and the atmosphere. Once FANF 6 came out it slowly started to become more kid friendly. Which is also reflected on the movie too.
I feel like some big things that desensitized us of big scary animatronic robots is the sea of mostly comedic but overall weird fan animations and characterizations made for the characters It's not really a big problem for me, but I imagine there's people annoyed by that
great analysis, I loved seeing how you pick apart how fnaf’s atmosphere attributes to it being one of the best and most scary games in the franchise. I also 100% disagree with the fnaf 4 statement, while I don’t think it has as (emphasis on as, it’s close.) good of an atmosphere as fnaf 1, I’d wager it’s the scariest. The atmosphere itself is familiar to everyone, so the horror can feel more personal. So while fnaf one takes an unfamiliar environment that IS unsettling and scary, fnaf four takes a familiar one and MAKES it unsettling and scary. as for the loud thing in the ear, that is completely your fault for failing. Yes I totally agree it’s just not really needed and doesn’t have to earape you, but.. on the other side, fnaf four doesn’t give you cheap scares as fnaf one does not, because fnaf four is picky with your gameplay. If you don’t make a mistake there’s not many situations you’ll fail. Unlike fnaf one that is randomized, and how foxy chooses to behave can just crush your night into dust. TLDR: fnaf one spooky bc new environment already scary. Fnaf four spooky bc known environment is made scary. Fnaf four picky but nice, fnaf one rng and mean.
I completely agree when you say FNaF 4 is scary, and I think the atmosphere is great, as I said in the video, and I’m glad you enjoy the game so much! For me the main thing it’s lacking is the dread after the mistake you’ve made. While in FNaF 1 you can be completely screwed by RNG, when you make an actual mistake you know before you die. This adds a sort of sense of dread beforehand, and adds even more buildup to the jumpscare. In FNaF 4s case it doesn’t have that sense of dread you get from FNaF 1 in most cases, when you know you’re going to die as it immediately punishes your mistakes with the jumpscare. This works for a lot of people, and I can understand why, but I respect FNaF 1 a lot more for it’s use of jumpscares and find it more fun. I also just think the audio mechanics in FNaF 4 can feel cheap at points, but again I’m glad you can enjoy it! It all comes down to personal preference.
@@AlansInputI do think I am partially biased towards fnaf 4, bc I rlly like how it had a bunch to offer gameplay wise, with the main gameplay, fun w plushtrap, and Fredbear/nightmare nights, the lore, etc. but it’s true fnaf 4 does pretty much rely on sound more than anything, while fnaf 1 has a plethora of mechanics and what not- I also just feel the jump scares in fnaf 4 are scarier because they lunge at you from the darkness (obv this is all subjective). Can fnaf one be better than fnaf four with atmosphere? Sure, can it beat it at sound intensity? Maybe, but can it offer as much content? Not really
The movie, was that one thing you wish would never happen to you in your life. And it did. Somehow, someway, they managed to make the movie as worse as possible. And they managed to do it. All 9 years have been terminated for, that.
fnaf 4 by far has the best ambiance and atmosphere of any of the fnaf games, the distant dogs barking, the grandfather clock and the shuffling feet of the animatronics, all capped off with the fact that you have to listen to them breathing right up next to you makes the atmosphere so amazing
I don't know why people keep saying that the Security Breach is bright when they keep having to go to the settings In order to see what they're doing. I say that Security Breach is only Places That are brightly lit. Is in the lobby, Daycare And the atrium. Everywhere else is dark as fuck And have to brighten it up by using the settings.
Yeah essentially how Fnaf actually worked was dread. You know whats coming for you but importantly you are stuck in one place. You are vulnerable and you know the threats are coming but they go against each other so you can never be sure you can stop them all or when. And the atmosphere with sound in the first game is super in depth to the point you can track responses with just your ears.
I personally believe that FNAF 4 is the most terrifying of all the games. it literal puts you in a “realistic” situation with nightmare animatronics lurking in your dark halls, the very thing most of us are scared of. we are forced to meet these creatures at the door and hope the isn’t something standing in the dark literally right in front of you. FNAF 1 is definitely up there tho
Very well made video. Im surprised you are so underground. You’re in the early parts of your channel growing, so you need to grow a foundation for credibility. In my opinion, go for a more objective and critical approach rather than a opinionated approach, which you do extremely well in this video. Good job Fs subscribing to support
a lot of people disliked the fnaf movie but i loved it, i even loved sb and every other main line game, i grew up with fnaf and i remember talking with friends about who springtrap was, so even fnaf 3 has a special place to me
The movie, was that one thing you wish would never happen to you in your life. And it did. Somehow, someway, they managed to make the movie as worst as possible. And they did it.
nice video! its really well made, especially for a channel with only 150 subs. you gave some good points and the editing is great! quick tip tho, try not to speak so fast at the start of the video.
it's "there's gonna be a jumpscare" -k, when. -there will be WHEN MF WHEN and then nothing... nothing pumps adrenaline more than setting a jumpscare and waiting for audience to calm down
I’ve always found the first one near impossible to play. I never really look through the cameras cos I can’t handle another level of stress and stuff to do on top of the fact animatronics wants to come kill me! So I ignore them other than Pirate Cove. Through VR this game is impossible for me and I can’t get past day two. I just end up locking the doors and waiting for my impending doom, awaiting the jump scares with my eyes closed 😳 😱 😆
This vid basically explained also why the movie wasn't scary at all. I'm not hating on the movie I really don't. I just understand why the movie felt flat. The storyline could be a bit more clear but meh. If they could, they should've done something with the atmosphere at least if they really can't go higher with the jump scare since I can guess as to why the jump scare wasn't feightening at all.
They didn't even have a scene where Mike checks the cameras and realises one of the animatronics is missing, literally the most memorable part of fnaf1 gameplay
@TLIPS-rs3vx Genuine horror for one, there are some shots that are shockingly scary And the modern elements, being the neon lights, the animatronics having personalities, and comedic moments - The movie melds the two together pretty well, not perfectly, but honestly it is a solid film; there's even subtle spooks, that affect you from the background
I honestly think that the movie didn't feel like the first game, cause of the movies building layout, it's not the same, it's meant to look like a real life abandoned pizzeria, which I get that, but the fnaf 1 map is just like nostalgic and giving liminal space vibe, it looks like a pizzeria and a place for kids to enjoy, but at the same time just looked and felt odd, and I think that's one of the reasons what made fnaf 1 unique and creepy
I agree! I even said so in the video, my problem isn't the atmosphere in FNaF 4, it's the reliance of the jumpscares themselves I don't like rather than tying them into the atmosphere like the first game.
I would also like to add I’m not far into the video yet, but I don’t think you mentioned this just watching someone play. This isn’t as scary as actually playing it and having it in VR is 10 times worse.
There's something uniquely... uncanny about the animatronics in the first game compared to any of the others in the series. I mean, whenever I look at a still of Fnaf 1 Bonnie or Chica's jumpscare, there's something quite unnerving about how they look. The plastic of the eyes... the rubber of the teeth... I think that only Golden Freddy and Springtrap's jumpscares have as uncanny a look to them as Bonnie and Chica.
I 100% agree with your points I’d also like to add a little note about the animatronic designs of FNAF 1, because they genuinely look like characters that were meant to entertain children, with the slight uncanny factor that alot of mascots of their time had.
Atmosphere... at mos phere... AT MOST FEAR !?!?!?!??!??!?
SCUMPOUS AND SEXY THINGS YOU GOT GOING ON HERE PAL
omg so true
I think the original FNaF is still the best game in the series and it can't be topped. It's perfect.
FNAF 4 clears negative diff what are you babbling about buddy ☠️
@@gungun5845 Did I ask
@@ethancoolbro18gamer86 doesn't change the fact of the matter 😹
I thought the movie would do that but......
Woohoo, all the stuff that was missing from the movie!!!1!1!1
Surprised how few views a video of this quality has! Nice work and keep it up!
Love the video Man, I appreciate the audio balancing and quality, definitely higher quality than your sub count implied.
Another thing that made it even scsrier back in the was how simple the lore was.
I think FNAF 2 and 3 are the kings imo
Im so high ride now the bagground is driving me crazy
This video is just amazing in so many ways, and I really hope you do get to blow up, I don't think the atmosphere could ever truly be recreated but they could definitely come close. Is there any way I could donate to the channel?
Not at the moment but hopefully soon! Thank you for your support
And beeing alone in that office with that silence watching cameras makes it more creepy
WHY IS THE MOVIE NOT LIKE THIS, IT COULD HAVE BEEN SO MUCH BETTER😭😭😭
I feel like some big things that desensitized us of big scary animatronic robots is the sea of mostly comedic but overall weird fan animations and characterizations made for the characters
It's not really a big problem for me, but I imagine there's people annoyed by that
Phenomenal video with amazing analysis. Great points throughout the whole thing. You got a new sub from me fs.
great analysis, I loved seeing how you pick apart how fnaf’s atmosphere attributes to it being one of the best and most scary games in the franchise.
Not really
proud to be your 600th sub
Wow! This, is a masterpeice of a video! Earned a new sub.
Still a bad game and it doesn't capture the uncanny atmosphere of the original games.
God damn, you deserve way more than 170 subscribers!
I have been looking for a video like this so i can implement whatever the hell scott did right into my game
To think 9 years ago people didn't even care about the atmosphere, people were just scared by th jumspscares or not scared at all
So many views yet little subscribers but good thing I subscribed ;)
Yeah atmosphere all gone in the film adaptation
Yep
Atmosphere
Very well made video. Im surprised you are so underground. You’re in the early parts of your channel growing, so you need to grow a foundation for credibility. In my opinion, go for a more objective and critical approach rather than a opinionated approach, which you do extremely well in this video. Good job

a lot of people disliked the fnaf movie but i loved it, i even loved sb and every other main line game, i grew up with fnaf and i remember talking with friends about who springtrap was, so even fnaf 3 has a special place to me

Amazing video. Just subscribed! 234th subscriber
I think the game that comes the closest to fnaf1 in terms of horror is fnaf6, both night modes in that game has insane suspense and atmosphere.
is anyone else seeing the face staring at me this entire video or am i up too late
"It's not the ground that kills you; it's the fall"? Don't you mean it the other way around? Or am I missing something (like dying of shock)
I.. completely messed up that quote you’re right!
WAS THAT THE BITE OF '87?!
nice video! its really well made, especially for a channel with only 150 subs. you gave some good points and the editing is great! quick tip tho, try not to speak so fast at the start of the video.
underrated ‼️
it's "there's gonna be a jumpscare"
-k, when.
-there will be
WHEN MF WHEN
and then nothing...
nothing pumps adrenaline more than setting a jumpscare and waiting for audience to calm down
I’ve always found the first one near impossible to play.
Ayy great video! 422 subs? Lemme fix that.
Great job
Wow, that ending jumpscare got me good; I got Freddied all over!
Seriously speaking, got a chuckle out of me.
FNAF has a autumn atmosphere
Absolute Cinema! 😮
Really miss the old games
I think the movie captured the old feel of the series while including more recent elements
How? like aside from the animatronics and pizzeria what else?
@TLIPS-rs3vx Genuine horror for one, there are some shots that are shockingly scary
And the modern elements, being the neon lights, the animatronics having personalities, and comedic moments
-
The movie melds the two together pretty well, not perfectly, but honestly it is a solid film; there's even subtle spooks, that affect you from the background
@@altermike3197 oh yeah for sure there are some good shots like when the light shines on the door revealing foxy's shadow
Fnaf four has great atmosphere
I agree! I even said so in the video, my problem isn't the atmosphere in FNaF 4, it's the reliance of the jumpscares themselves I don't like rather than tying them into the atmosphere like the first game.
Security breach could've worked if it was more audio based and the jumpscares are unexpected
I would also like to add I’m not far into the video yet, but I don’t think you mentioned this just watching someone play. This isn’t as scary as actually playing it and having it in VR is 10 times worse.
"Not the direction that i want it to go in"
Bro, this wasn't the direction the franchise was going until people whined about the original story.
great video but the moving checkered background was really distracting and kind of disorienting
Wait how does this video have 34k views but 3 mil likes???
Haha i wonder what your thoughts on the fnaf movie are ahahah
