    Tips And Comments:
    Playing Technique:
Played with a pick next to the bridge pickup (or maybe above), middle strength applied, all knobs at full. Maintaining up and down strokes is important!
    Gear Sound:
Boosted mid high and high frequencies, lots of compression and a little bit o chorus effect.
    About The Song:
Lots of bass parts and lines, you need to be quick to get to some high parts of the bass. Correct finger positions are very important, otherwise you'll not be able to make fluent lines

The bass in the smiths is always something that I loved, pisses me off how Morrissey could never see it was one of their strengths

@@amlam1999 this is pretty standard actually. In terms of the copyright for a song it's normally spilt 50% for lyrics and 50% for music (normally equally divided). If he only wrote his part then that wouldn't end up amounting to much more in any other band. Still amazing basslines though

Ben Mercer In fairness, Johnny marr wrote quite a few of the bass lines, on top of his guitar riffs and doing interviews

bass was the main driving force in the smiths. all their hits the main melody is actually the bass lines. pure genius level melodies, and a great and very individual sound as well.

    • @hoodoohullabaloo2848

I disagree, without Marrs Songwriting/Guitar the bass line doesnt make the song at all. However I agree that Rourke was/is a killer bass player and when it comes to bass lines he is my number one favourite bass player ever.
In songs like there is a light that never goes out or (obviously) barbarism begins at home the bass was what got me into these as well. But in general its definetly Marrs Songwriting that is the driving force behind the Smiths. I mean its widely accepted that they """invented""" indie/alternative rock and made it Mainstream and well since Marr was the songwriter you just have to give him the credit. And in what hit song is the bass the main melody? The bass is just playing exceptionally high, but that doesnt make it the main melody and most music listeners pay most attention to singing and the general melody.
But I completely agree that Rourke is a genius in making bass lines and I personally hum along the bass in like 50% of their songs more than with the guitar, but I still think:
A smiths song without Rourkes bass would be missing smth, but Rourkes Bass without Marrs songwriting would be just a cool bass line. Thats obviously not a song or a driving force in the smiths. And rourke wrote that bass lines to the Marrs songs, not the other way around (except for barbarism begins at home lol)

@@hoodoohullabaloo2848 No doubt Johnny had massive skill, but Andy was no slouch and had a diverse musical background, he was more of a Jazz bass player and brought the style to the band, it wasn't all Johnny's music writing. The style and attack was all from Andy.
Mike Joyce was probably the most replaceable band member. Morrissey proved that he could continue on successfully without all of them.

Hey BRO - you nailed it !!! - I saw The Smiths 5 times and you did Andy Rourke so proud - Andy is the most under-rated bassist - pure genius - I decided to play the bass in 1980 after I saw The Clash. Paul Simonon was the coolest - Thanks

    • @chfr927

We are brothers from another mother. I learned bass because I wanted to be Paul Simonon (saw them live twice). First bass parts I learned were Tina Weymouth (so precise and clever, saw them live twice). Then Pete Farndon (saw them live twice). But the crowning player who opened my eyes and ears and set me on a lifelong obsession was Andy Rourke (saw them live six times). Met Andy once in NYC. Just the sweetest most unassuming man who deserved better from Morrissey. He laid down so many amazing lines, but this bass part I think is the most astounding--how it weaves in and out of the cords and melody with interesting half steps and great use of slides. Just brilliant...and catchy.
