This is one of those songs where I simply can't understand how they wrote it. There's so much to it.
They took common death metal harmonics and made a pop song out of it. An outstanding one though.
Iirc, it's written sometime around 94-95. I think there's a bootleg when they played it live when they gigged with Alanis Morrisette -- with a long outro centered around a greenwood keyboard solo. Like half of the tune isn't what what you've heard when 97 came along. Cool flex, especially around the time. Most good bands are either defunct or pretty much over (for many sad reasons).
It's written by five entire people, each of whom are an expert in their instrument and in their craft and of whom put lots of effort into their part. If you loved music with a passion and played it for hours a day, surely you would be able to come up with very intricate ideas, no?
@@jonnylpenman Intricacy and musicality are two different things though. Virtuosity doesn't equal good songwriting. I think they just plucked this one from the sky. It's an amazing tune.

I never realised how cool paranoid android's bass line is.
is very different cause on the guitar base , thom yorke is already doing a bass base while doing chords , so this causes them to let the bass free to "walk" over the song
Colin Greenwood is a monster, check out other basslines by him, like 15 steps, karma police or my iron lung. Very underrated talent!

Wow I didn't realise how many times he used the chromatic scale in this song. There's an art to making the chromatic scale sound interesting, massively under-rated band and awesome musicians
idk if they're underrated haha. They're like one of the highest rated bands of the nineties and of modern music... maybe in public opinion?

@@leecliff4762 underrated in the publics eyes but not in the critics. People were pissed when they got put into the rock an roll hall of fame but it was well deserved. People tend not to like experimental artists. If they stuck with what they were doing and not turning towards what they do now (which don't get me wrong is still friggin good) people might have cherished them like Pink Floyd.

I agree, the 1st solo is weird enough, but the 2nd solo is incoherent in some parts, it's basically Jonny Greenwood going nuts, too much phaser making it almost impossible to replicate

In this song you can really here Muse's inspiration from Radiohead
Yes that really is the truth. I never experienced this as strongly as a teenager(maybe my ear wasn't as evolved) when Muse were a fairly new band, but in the Rain Down part It felt like I was listening to Bellamy... And the fact that Bellamy or anyone of them never admitted to be influenced by Radiohead. Always just said. Nirvana, Rage Against the Machine and Jeff Buckley. Influences you can for sure hear in their early stuff... But not Radiohead.. sure.
