I asked W&N, and got this answer : Dear Jaime,

    Thank you for your reply.
We do have a factory in China that manufacture fine art colours.
However, these are solely for the Chinese market in order to give Chinese artists access to colours which are of higher quality than those traditionally available there.
Note that our Chinese manufactured colours are not the same formulation or quality as our Artists' quality ranges.
Because they are intended only for China and use locally sourced pigments, the Chinese manufactured colours are labelled entirely in Chinese except for the Winsor & Newton logo and type of colour.
There are no English colour names or permanence ratings on the labels.
The Chinese-made colours have been produced to meet the specific needs of that community.
Winsor & Newton Artists' quality ranges are still, and always will be, formulated to be the very best colours of their kind in the world.
    Kind regards,
    Winsor & Newton Support

I really new to oil painting and needed to know about this because I bought quite a few oil paints in the Chinese version. A 18 pack and 4 45 ml now I'm kicking myself because there not the same pigments. I suppose you get what you for. Dam. At least there oil paints.

@@rachel18809 They don't have the pigment labels on the back, like PY37 etc? I notice that on some tubes of of Chinese paints with the word "chrome" or "hue" in the name, the pigment is NA. I have 1 and the color is really weak. It is rated as light fast and fully opaque but it's more like transparent and close to 0 tinting strength.

The chinese W&N factory also makes artist grade products, however they label them differently to prevent selling overseas. If you really know what you are doing, you can find good paints from that factory.

Aside from the obvious color differences, the real test will be time. Lightfastness, longevity and will they remain homogeneous in the tubes and on the canvas have yet to be determined.
    Interesting video. Thanks for sharing!

For people like i in the Philippines who are somewhat in the poor side chinese winsor and newton is helpful because the western brand is 500 pesos a tube while the chinese brand is 500 for an 24 pack might be just my preference or i might just be high on gamsol again but its somewhat okay for begginners and if you are on a tight budget

The paint? In my opinion, the Chinese factories are using extremely suspect pigment. They certainly aren't the colors they're SUPPOSED to be, and what pigment they are using is extremely low quantity, akin to student-level paint (or worse). It might be fun to play with if you can get it REALLY cheap, but standard western Winsor & Newton is just a better buy.

@@CallyKariShokka thanks for the answer, I ended up buying 7 colors of this Chinese one, and when I went to the W&N website I realized that the colors and pigments didn't match, and I couldn't find any other videos talking about it, here in Brazil W&N are extremely expensive just to give you an idea Artist Oil Paint 37ml Winsor & Newton S4 089 Cadmium Orange costs R$248.00 or 1/5 of a minimum wage, well but anyway, thanks for answering so fast!

    Helpful good video.
I had already asked myself how the oil paints are when I saw videos of it with the watercolour paints.
    You answered my question.
I also like to use cheap oil paints for oil colour sketches and for glaze painting.
If i paint with glazes, the oil paints should be thinner anyway and cheap ones work quite well for that,
if they are too oily, I put them on newspaper that pulls out the excess oil.

  • @askialuna7717

I don't think it's that bad that the colors are a bit off, depending on the price range and brand, different pigments are bought,
depending on the colour tone and intensity and the quality of the pigments, such as purity and uniform grain size.
I am not very familiar with the oil paints of the individual manufacturers, but with watercolour I have seen that for student grade paint an iron oxide red is often used as burnt sienna,
i.e. PR101 and these are more intense and orange.
For artist grade paints there is a brown iron oxide uses PBr7 which contains about 25% manganese oxide and this burnt Siena is browner and not as intense.
I suspect that less of the iron oxide can be used to produce an intense colour from it.
Earth tones also often vary in hue because manufacturers buy paint from different sources and their earth tones come from different mines.
I myself have a few different yellow ochre pigments from Kremer because they differ so much.

So the Chinese ones are not counterfeit?

    • @CallyKariShokka
      @CallyKariShokka  11 місяців тому

Depends what you mean by 'counterfeit'. Are they technically licensed by Winsor & Newton? Yes. Do they share the same pigment and quality as their european paint? Absolutely not.

    • @djo-dji6018
      @djo-dji6018 10 місяців тому +1

@@CallyKariShokka No, the answer can only be they are not counterfeit. They are produced by W&N and nobody advertises them as the same colours as those the company sells outside China. It's a different product with its own specific characteristics.
