  • Sergey Rachmaninov (1873-1943)
    Moments Musicaux, Op. 16, No. 3 - 6 (1896)
    Nikolai Lugansky, 2016
    From Mariinsky Theatre
    [0:00] No. 3 - Andante cantabile. B minor
    [5:04] No. 4 - Presto. E minor
    [7:58] No. 5 - Adagio sostenuto. D♭ major
    [12:05] No. 6 - Maestoso. C major
“Composed in 1896, the Six Musical Moments bear witness to Rachmaninoff's melodic genius. In these pages, he pays homage to several composers of Romanticism including, above all, Franz Schubert, author of a series of Musical Moments. Slavic melodies, wild rhythms, contemplations and reminiscences of the power of the orchestra merge in these pieces by the Russian composer, evoking impressions rather than places or characters. “

Lugansky's interpretations are so amazing that you literally and truly feel Rachmaninoff when he plays. I am breathless listening to it, it was fascinating!

I think Lugansky is one of the best pianists alive, and one of the few left of the students of the old school Russian masters tradition.

I came here to listen to no 5 but started from the beginning, having never heard No4. Wow. The contrast between 4 and 5 is absolutely bonkers. When 5 starts after 4, it's like the calm after the storm. So much more serene next to 4, which is saying a lot because it's already so calm when not even taking it next to 4. This performance has almost widened understanding of the spectrum. Amazing performance. Love everything from Lugansky.

Rachmaninov has a unique ability to give their full expression to internal states that no word or picture can express.

A UA-cam video of Moment Musicaux No.4 was my introduction to Nikolai Lugansky. It was hard to find videos of his performances until I encounted the Enchanted Wanderer.
    I truly appreciate your channel.

I have never come across any other player that plays this opus better than Lugansky, he is the best Rachmaninoff interpreter for me, but he simply owns this opus, he is the king of this set!

I won't find the words needed to praise the total sincerity of Lugansky's playing, and his gift of himself whilst he is playing. One can only throw flowers to him, even if surrounding him with a rain of stars would be more convenient.

Nikolaï Lugansky is force, passion, delicatesse, tenderness, precision.
    A prodigy. A marvel.
From now, I can't listen Rachmaninoff performed by another interpreter.

he pours in more sincerity & dedication than many modern "virtuosi" performers that want to prove their virtuosity by rushing through a beautiful harmony succession, let alone the superb legato, tonal cascades & enchanting bel canto he produces

Absolutely stunning....so mysterious and morbidly beautiful...wonder what Uncle Sergei went through to write such painfully beautiful music. Lugansky captures every moment of the musical masterpiece. Can't get through without tears though :(

It is said, for No.4, that uncle sergei was refusing to compose at the time due to depression but then got robbed in a train, so he wrote the presto out of rage after.

@@jaspertiggeler9393 It wasn't out of rage. He was struggling financially and the last of his belongings were robbed in a train. He then composed these 6 Moments Musicaux over the span of a month to make enough money to survive
