Hi guys, I'm starting a new channel... so if you would like to show your appreciation for the time I spend editing and uploading these Countdown videos each week, I would ask you to do me a favor and subscribe to www.youtube.com/@SmarterHomesAndGardens which will be about home automation and things like that. YT has some policies about uploading videos longer than 10 minutes that require a certain number of subscribers, etc. Anyway, would appreciate your help in getting the new channel started. Thanks! (...and don't worry I'll keep uploading Countdown on this channel.)
Gave it a go on 22 Dec 🥸compiled on the fly from "Sherlock Holmes Day" 😺nice historical bit at the start For 269 (start at 2:27) I had 265 -- 75(9-5)-7(7-2) ... 300-35 🧐Elaine missed the math (said 262, had 272, so no points) had 4*75-2(7+7) .. 300-2*14 (oops) 😺Not an easy path 5*2*(75-7*7)+9 ... 10(75-49)=10*26=260+9 👏 First Tea Time Teaser was hit 🤔Icy later to literacy 😎 For 898 (4:46) I got 900 -- 7*100+8*25 OR 7*75-25+8*50🧐What an answer: 8(100+(50/25))=8(100+2)=816+7+75 👏WOW For 105 (6:53) duck soup 🤓10(1+2)+75 ... 30+75 😎Elaine got this . . . stunned Laura missed For 544 (8:46) quite challenging 🧐 My best was 548 -- 4*100+2*75-50/25 ... 400+150-2 🧐What an answer: 4*100+(75/25)(50-2) ... 400+3*48 ... 400+144 😺👏
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, and I also had another solution with the same starting point. 7 x 7 = 49 9 - 5 = 4 49 x 4 = 196 196 + 75 = 271 271 - 2 = 269 And I also had these: 75 x 7 = 525 525 - 5 = 520 520 / 2 = 260 260 + 9 = 269 75 x 9 x 2 = 1350 1350 / 5 = 270 7 / 7 = 1 270 - 1 = 269 In the second numbers round, I got the same solution as Rachel, but I think it's the only one. I love the four-large game and it's rare enough when someone plays it, so it's really frustrating when there aren't any alternative solutions to explore. In the third round, I thought Elaine was going to anticipate my solution, because if you start the same way she did...: 6 - 1 = 5 10 + 5 = 15 ... then you can just do this to reach the target: 15 x 7 = 105 And since 75 is 15 x 5, you can also do the same thing with it: 75 x 7 = 525 6 - 1 = 5 525 / 5 = 105 75 x 7 x 2 = 1050 1050 / 10 = 105 And yet again, in the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and it's the _only one_ . Aaaarrrrrggghhhh!!!
Rough start to the week for me, though I still managed to at least match the contestants. 269: I had 271, with (75+5)/2 * 7 - 9. 75 with a number so far from both 225 and 300 (and no 3 or 4 for the easy multiply) was tough. 898: Plenty of ways to hit 900, easiest being (50+75)*7 + 25 or 100*8 + 75 + 25. 105: Lots of options. 75 + 10*(2+1), 75 + 10*6/2, 7 * (10+6-1). 544: 547 is easy (100 * (4+2) - 50 - 75/25). Needed extra time, but I managed to get to 546 and 542: (75*4 - 25 - 100/50) * 2 and (50*4 + 75 - 100/25) * 2.
1. Same as RR! 75-(7x7)=26x2x5+9=269. Can’t find a 2nd way 2. 900 only : 7x100+8x25=898 3. LNAFP: (10+6-1)x7=105 or (2+7)x(1+10)+6=105 4. OUT OF THE TIME: (4x100)+((50-2)x75/25)=544
What I want to know is: How does Rachel know that something is possible without having found a solution yet, and how does she know that it's IMpossible?
269 (out of time): 7 x (9 - 5) x 7 = 196 196 - 2 + 75 = 269 898? I found many different ways for 900 105: 2 = 1 = 3 3 x 10 = 30 75 + 30 =105 544: couldn't get closer than 542: 4 x (100 + 25 - 2) + 50

Gave it a go on 22 Dec 🥸compiled on the fly from "Sherlock Holmes Day" 😺nice historical bit at the start
For 269 (start at 2:27) I had 265 -- 75(9-5)-7(7-2) ... 300-35 🧐Elaine missed the math (said 262, had 272, so no points) had 4*75-2(7+7) .. 300-2*14 (oops) 😺Not an easy path 5*2*(75-7*7)+9 ... 10(75-49)=10*26=260+9 👏
First Tea Time Teaser was hit 🤔Icy later to literacy 😎
For 898 (4:46) I got 900 -- 7*100+8*25 OR 7*75-25+8*50🧐What an answer: 8(100+(50/25))=8(100+2)=816+7+75 👏WOW
For 105 (6:53) duck soup 🤓10(1+2)+75 ... 30+75 😎Elaine got this . . . stunned Laura missed
For 544 (8:46) quite challenging 🧐 My best was 548 -- 4*100+2*75-50/25 ... 400+150-2 🧐What an answer: 4*100+(75/25)(50-2) ... 400+3*48 ... 400+144 😺👏
269: 2 * 9 * 75/5 - 7/7
Did the same.
898:
50 / 25 = 2
100 + 2 = 102
102 * 8 = 816
816 + 75 + 7 = 898
That's exactly how I did it & I'm surprised I got it before Rachel did 😊
That's how I did it
In the first numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, and I also had another solution with the same starting point.
7 x 7 = 49
9 - 5 = 4
49 x 4 = 196
196 + 75 = 271
271 - 2 = 269
And I also had these:
75 x 7 = 525
525 - 5 = 520
520 / 2 = 260
260 + 9 = 269
75 x 9 x 2 = 1350
1350 / 5 = 270
7 / 7 = 1
270 - 1 = 269
In the second numbers round, I got the same solution as Rachel, but I think it's the only one. I love the four-large game and it's rare enough when someone plays it, so it's really frustrating when there aren't any alternative solutions to explore.
In the third round, I thought Elaine was going to anticipate my solution, because if you start the same way she did...:
6 - 1 = 5
10 + 5 = 15
... then you can just do this to reach the target:
15 x 7 = 105
And since 75 is 15 x 5, you can also do the same thing with it:
75 x 7 = 525
6 - 1 = 5
525 / 5 = 105
75 x 7 x 2 = 1050
1050 / 10 = 105
And yet again, in the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and it's the _only one_ . Aaaarrrrrggghhhh!!!
7 x 75 = 525
525 - the 5 = 520
520 divided by the 2 = 260
260 add 9 = 269
Took me about five minutes mind !😅 RR is very impressive
Maggie is my absolute favourite person on TV 😍 if anyone who knows her sees this, please invite me to her local
Does anyone know how Rachel can tell so quickly if a set of numbers is possible or not?
I assume a computer will tell her if it's possible or not but not give her the solution
Wow, I don’t think I’ve seen someone misdeclare with a worse answer than they actually had before.
And then with 893 again. Taking the seven away instead of staying at 900.
For 269, since there are two 7s, one way to get there would be:
7 x 5 = 35
75 - 35 = 40
40 x 7 = 280
280 - 9 - 2 = 269
544:
100 * 4 = 400
50 - 2 = 48
48 * 75 / 25 = 144
400 + 144 = 544
1. Same as RR! 75-(7x7)=26x2x5+9=269. Can’t find a 2nd way
2. 900 only : 7x100+8x25=898
3. LNAFP: (10+6-1)x7=105 or (2+7)x(1+10)+6=105
4. OUT OF THE TIME: (4x100)+((50-2)x75/25)=544
I got 898. !!
105:
10 * 6 / 2 = 30
75 + 30 = 105
2 + 1 = 3
10 * 6 * 3 = 180
180 - 75 = 105
75 - 2 = 73
73 * 10 = 730
730 + 6 - 1 = 735
735 / 7 = 105
For 105:
10 × (6 ÷ 2) = 30
75 + 30 = *_105_*
6÷2=3×10=30+75=105 ... one of multiple solutions.
I got 269 within 30s in such a weird way:
7x9=63
75+63=138
138×2=276
276-7=269
What I want to know is: How does Rachel know that something is possible without having found a solution yet, and how does she know that it's IMpossible?
The producers tell her.
75/5=15x2=30x9=270-(7/7)=269
Well that's probably the easiest countdown conundrum I've ever seen, I wonder if it's pre-generated or they picked it due to the occasion
269 (out of time):
7 x (9 - 5) x 7 = 196
196 - 2 + 75 = 269
898? I found many different ways for 900
105:
2 = 1 = 3
3 x 10 = 30
75 + 30 =105
544: couldn't get closer than 542: 4 x (100 + 25 - 2) + 50
7*2 +10+6+75 = 105
898-2=8×(100+7+(75+50)/25)
((6/2) x 10) + 75.
How does Rachel always know if a numbers round is solvable, even when she didn't find a solution?
Because if a numbers game is unsolvable, she will be told this on her earpiece. If it is solvable, she’ll be told nothing.
269 = (75 + 9 x 7) x 2 - 7
Out of time, but 75/5 x 2 x 9- 7/7 = 269
(75 + 7 + 7) × (5 - 2) = -2 (not the greatest of start to the week, this)
(100 + 25) × 7 + (75 - 25) = +2 (off one way, now the other)
75 + 10 × 6 ÷ 2 = 0 (a gentle lovely time)
(100 + 75) × 2 + 50 × 4 = +6 (aw man)
poor Elaine did awful.. 893 and declaring 262
7X5 = 35 75-35 = 40X7 = 280-9-2 = 269
7÷7 = 1 75X2 = 150÷5 = 30X9 = 270-1 = 269
50÷25 = 2+100 = 102X8 = 816+75+7 = 898
75+2 - 77÷7 = 11+10 = 21 6-1 = 5X21 = 105
6-1 = 5 75-2 = 73X10 = 730+5 = 735÷7 = 105
50-2 = 48 75÷25 = 3X48 = 144 100X4 = 400+144 = 544
