Hi guys, I'm starting a new channel... so if you would like to show your appreciation for the time I spent editing and uploading these Countdown videos each week, I would ask you to do me a favor and subscribe to www.youtube.com/@SmarterHomesAndGardens which will be about home automation and things like that. YT has some policies about uploading videos longer than 10 minutes that require a certain number of subscriptions, etc. Anyway, would appreciate your help in getting the new channel started. Thanks! (...and don't worry I'll keep uploading Countdown on this channel.)

I have to pause these sometimes as I am dealing with a long-seated fear of maths. But I am getting better and very grateful that you put these online. Thanks very much. 🇬🇧👍

It's great to hear. We all have to pause it sometimes, and the more you get used to your factors and times tables, the easier it becomes

The contestants and especially Rachel put in the time to get to their level, you’ll improve with “reps” as well. 🙂

Good for you. I've met so many people who seem to delight in not being able to do maths that's it's really heartening to see someone overcoming all that. Good luck to you.

Only way to learn. I pause too because the clock song makes me antsy.

I got them all as shown on the show except
    6*8*8+9+2=395

    Giving it a go on 22 Dec 🥸I got 🤔egged on, apparently😂
    For 159 (start at 1:11 / :71) "could be tricky . . . maybe not" 😂 It wasn't -- 25*6+9 🤓OR replace "25" w/ (10+8+7)
    For 681 (2:49) not easy, but I got it 🤔 (7-4) (25*(8+1)+2) ... 3*(25*9+2) ... 3*227 😎 though diffo from Rachel 👏
    For 395 (4:33) tough set w/ those numbers, but I hit 🧐I got 8*8*6+9+2 ... 64*6 +11 ... 384+11 😎diffo from Rachel
    For 616 (6:42) another tough set, but I hit 🤓25(5(8-2-1))-9 ... 25(5*5)-9 ... 25*25 -9 😎and I match Rachel😺

    159=(8+7)x10+9
395=(8x8+6+9)x10/2 [I was pumped to get this one in the 30 seconds!]

    (25+5)×(9+1)=300
    300+8=308
    308×2=616

  • @Nullifidian

In the first numbers round, I tried to solve it without using the 25, but that turned out to be just as easy:
    8 + 7 = 15
    15 x 10 = 150
    150 + 9 = 159
    10 + 9 = 19
    19 x 8 = 152
    152 + 7 = 159
    10 + 8 + 6 = 24
    24 x 7 = 168
    168 - 9 = 159
In the second numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution, but also had these ways of multiplying directly to the target:
    8 + 1 = 9
    25 x 9 = 225
    225 + 2 = 227
    7 - 4 = 3
    227 x 3 = 681
    25 + 8 = 33
    33 x 7 = 231
    231 - 4 = 227
    2 + 1 = 3
    227 x 3 = 681
And this way of getting close without using the 1:
    25 - 2 = 23
    23 x 4 = 92
    92 - 7 = 85
    85 x 8 = 680
    680 + 1 = 681
In the third numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and also had these:
    8 x 8 = 64
    64 + 9 + 6 = 79
    10 / 2 = 5
    79 x 5 = 395
    8 x 8 x 6 = 384
    384 + 9 + 2 = 395
    10 x 9 = 90
    90 + 8 = 98
    98 x 8 = 784
    784 + 6 = 790
    790 / 2 = 395
In the final numbers round, I saw Rachel's solution and I believe this was the second of her "couple of ways":
    9 - 5 - 1 = 3
    25 x 3 = 75
    75 + 2 = 77
    77 x 8 = 616
    And I also had these:
    25 + 1 = 26
    26 x 2 = 52
    52 - 8 = 44
    9 + 5 = 14
    44 x 14 = 616
    25 + 2 + 1 = 28
    9 + 8 + 5 = 22
    28 x 22 = 616

      Where have you been?

    • @Nullifidian
      @Nullifidian 2 місяці тому

@@johnmmxii It was only about a week ago that one of Bjoern's videos showed up in my UA-cam sidebar and I realized he was back making videos. For some reason, despite being subscribed, I hadn't been getting updates (probably because the algorithm was pushing the music I usually use UA-cam for up to the top) so I didn't know that he was back and covering the current series.

i found 616 the way rachel did, but i saw another interesting way
    .
    .
    .
if you take the sums of the numbers in the even and odd positions of the board
    25 + 1 + 2 ... = 28
    .... 9 + 5 + 8 = 22
    then 28 * 22 = 616

    • @LeviATallaksen
      @LeviATallaksen 2 місяці тому

The solution I found was using 8*77, nice to see that a different factorization also helps us getting there!
      25*(9-5-1) + 2 = 77
      8*77 = 616

Caught this one live and played along with the players.
Got the first three numbers in seconds. The third, I did differently than Rachel, (6x8x8)
The fourth one, I did just like the contestant, only saw Rachel's favourite 25x25 a few seconds after the time expired.
Will there be garden automation, as well?

    • @bjoern.gumboldt
      @bjoern.gumboldt  2 місяці тому

There will be, but probably 80/20 as far as home and garden, just because of the nature of the beast... there isn't as much available by comparison.

    I think for 395 it was easier then they thought. 6 x 8 x 8 = 384 +9+2=395

    • @jayhop
      @jayhop 2 місяці тому

Well Rachel is insane of course, but for regular people there was an easier way than this (for me, anyway). (8*8 +2) * 6 - (10-9)

  • @PlutoTheSecond

Took me too long to get 681, but I got one away from it, 395 and 616.
    25×7=175
    175-4-1=170
    8÷2=4
    170×4=680
    6×8=48
    8÷2=4
    48-4=44
    44×9=396
    25×8=200
    200+5=205
    2+1=3
    205×3=615

    I'm surprise neither contestant saw for the 2nd one 25 x 7 x 4 = 700, (8+1) x 2 = 18, 700-18 = 682. They would keep the other from getting 7 points if they had made the one little adjustment.

    159:
    25 * 6 = 150
    150 + 9 = 159
    8 + 7 = 15
    15 * 10 = 150
    150 + 9 = 159
    25 * 7 = 175
    175 - 10 - 6 = 159

    +9=79
    10÷2=5
    5x79=395
