  • How I set up a very simple shell dwelling cichlid aquarium for my Neolamproogus similis. This same simple set up can be done for Neolamprologus multifasciatus.

    Since a year I've raised a mini tank of N.Multifasciatus. They are in their 10th generation now. The tank is divided in two tribes. They are awesome. Hope lot of subscribers will follow yr steps.
    Great tutorial

      How good is that Matteo! 10th generation in a mini tank. Nice work! They really are awesome little fish and I highly recommend people give them a try if they are considering Tanganyikan Cichlids!

    That was a great tutorial mate! Those similus look awesome, I must say I really love my multis, such cool little fish, and I think they are about to breed, I will post a vid on my shellies soon, thanks again🙂👍🏻

      Thanks for that, glad you enjoyed it. Glad you are enjoying your multies so much, they really are cool little fish with so much character. I am sure you will have heaps soon mate!

    Great video Jason! I have had multis for 15 months now! I started with six juveniles that were approx 2 months old (Apr ‘20’). By late summer they matured to 2 males and four females! First spawns only produced a total of about 10 fry total from the females!
    They are the best parental fish I have ever had and fascinating to watch! Talk about digging!!!….WHOA!! They have a lot of heart and character!
    Multiple clutches of small broods has now totaled roughly 300 fry! Older siblings even help guiding new batches along! I love them very much!
    Good luck with your simis Jason! I doubt you’ll be disappointed!

      Cheers Charles, glad you enjoyed the video mate! Wow yeah that is a perfect ratio of males to females to get a load of fry very quickly!! Exactly, multies are such a fun fish to keep and breed! They always doing something in their tank arent they?! Cheers again, really hoping for lots of fry soon!

    Beautiful fish, I love the simplistic aquascape, they should be very happy in there. If they are any thing like multies, you should start seeing fry very soon.
    I wonder if similis leave as much time between broods as as my multies do, by the time their first brood was free swimming they has already layed their second brood!

      Thank you Mateo, glad you like how it turned out. I hope to see plenty soon! Will be nice to just sit with a cuppa and watch them interact. Hopefully I will be able to tell you all about it soon! But I am expecting them to be pretty much the same as multies.

    Hey Jason just just wondering I've currently got a set-up with similis and some cyprichromis leptosoma was thinking of adding some julidochromis transcriptus do you think that could work

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  2 роки тому

      Hey Martin, that would definitely work! Great choice of fish. Just make sure the tank is large enough to accommodate your fish, that the Cyps have a nice open area to swim and the Julis, a nice rocky outcrop to live in.

    Love your videos. Just wanted to ask at what ph and temp do you keep your Tanganyika cichlids at? And what do you add to the water to maintain parameters (eg buffer, traces , salt ) and if possible how often and how much do you change the water. Sorry for so many questions 😂
    Thank you

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  2 роки тому

      Cheers, glad you do. I aim for a pH of at least 8. Temp is around 24 degree at the moment. I use a fair priced Tanganyika buffer made by Fish Keepers Choice. They are on eBay. The main thing with Tanganyikan Cichlids is stability so as long as you keep the water parameters stable they will be fine. I do water changes every week. I change around 450 litres per week for my sump system. All good, hope that helps you!

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  2 роки тому

      Hmm you may have Neolamprologus multifasciatus. Although you mentioning a Convict makes me think you might be talking about some sort of Central/South American cichlid?

    Great video! I have 5 similis in a 3ft tank currently. Any tips on differentiating males and females apart from their size

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  3 роки тому +1

      That is a great size tank for them. Not really I am afraid. Both mine show colour on their dorsal and anal fins. I do think I can see a slight difference in the "pointness" of the dorsal fin between them with the male possibly having a slightly more pointed tip with his dorsal fin.

    • @zhengrongho2234
      @zhengrongho2234 3 роки тому

      @@JasonsCichlids mine have a bright yellow at the tip of their fins. Guessing those are the males. If I’m looking for them to breed. Should I be adding other tanganyikan species to the tank or leave it be

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  3 роки тому

      I'd leave them be for now. With good water quality and good food you should have fry in no time!

      @@JasonsCichlids thoughts on increasing the number of shelldwellers? Since 6 in a tank feels quite empty and I have a feeling there’s 4 males out of the 6

    • @JasonsCichlids
      @JasonsCichlids  3 роки тому

      Oh you could put more similis in the tank if you like. I would not add a different species of shell dweller to the tank though. If you want other fish in there Paracyprichromis will be fine as they are a mid water swimming fish and won't be competing for territory amongst the shells.

I think next time I will do whatever I need to do and then talk into the mic after rather than try to do both at the same time. Cheers for the feedback and glad you like the channel mate
