My grandmother had (at least she claimed) every album Johnny Cash recorded. Going through her estate, we discovered a footlocker FULL of Johnny Cash LP's! My parents couldn't keep them all, but those LP's were given a good home. Johnny Cash, the undisputed king of country music. The king is dead. Long live the king!
It’s a shame that this song never released publicly… 😢 I would love to listen to this song on Spotify! Nah, then again… I guess it’s considered public domain because they were never release publicly so… flip it I guess… we can use it on livestreams and stuff.
Leaving for the Army in about 2 months and i'm full of mixed emotions about life and being able to survive and prosper. This song and motivational speech at the end has helped me accept my future and to just Ride the Rails.. Thank you Johnny :)
I have the original program on DVD on which this song was based. Johnny Cash made a great tribute to those old trains, stations and crews which got America moving to where it needed to go. Romance is not completely gone from the rails; you merely have to know where to find it.
And you can see the warp in the track even then. America had the best train system in the world, until we stopped trying. I live a mile or so from a depot that could have taken me anywhere in the country - but it hasn't seen a passenger board a train for decades. A century ago I could have walked a block from my then-new house to a streetcar that would have taken me to that depot. The tracks have been buried under asphalt since before I was born.
At 1.00 is the Clinchfield #1 that was restored in 1968 after rusting away for 14 years in the Erwin, TN Rail Yard. I remember watching it pull the " Santa Claus Special " through Erwin on its way to Elkhorn City, KY. Even though it didn't toss out gifts in Tennessee there was always quite a crowd beside the track to watch it pass by. The #1 was moved to a Railroad Museum in Baltimore, Maryland in 1979.
While the railroads are far from dead, steam engines are long gone....I grew up watching them from northern Portland, OR, where the main line passed through a natural 'cut' in the land. In the wintertime, my mother used to send me down by the tracks to pick up hunks of coal which had fallen from passing trains to use in our coal-burning stove.
3 people who dislike this video must really love to burn out their money on gasoline for their cars. Riding the train is the most safest form of ground transportation. I am more likely to get killed driving in a car than riding a train. I live and work in Japan, and I live near a train station. Whenever I want to get out of town, I take the train. I have also been on the Shinkansen (Bullet) train at 300 km/h. Very expensive but nice.
I found an Iàrnrod Eireann (Irish Rail) Jacket in my job. With the jacket and a fabric mask because of Covid the actual Irish Rail employees just tip their cap to me as i pass. I listen to songs like this as im travelling for free.
I'll have to check out your channel. I Like your page on Facebook. I cover rail activity on the former D&H in Upstate NY, and I have covered quite a bit of the Northern Division of the Adirondack Scenic if you want to check out my stuff. Unfortunately we have lost our battle with the state and the trail group.
I travel by Amtrak when I travel long distance, it sure beats flying, driving and riding on buses. If there were more Amtrak trains traveling between Tucson & Los Angeles, I would be riding out to Los Angeles, San Diego & Ventura more often, and train travel is the civilized way to travel. I wish they would have trains between Philadelphia & Scranton, PA as all roads between Philadelphia & Scranton are too busy(I-476) and the other 4 routes are too slow to drive on.
i rode that train and johnny cash is the only man that could have had make that video without old english couples and japanese tourists hogging the windows, suppose they payed the fare aswell, great video
@@abk2k3aaronkauflin83 I think he's referring to the numerous bankruptcies and mergers that occurred during that period. However, it should be noted that this documentary was released in 1974.
High speed rail lines are being built in Florida by the Florida East Coast railroad from Miami to Orlando, and it will be extended into Tampa & St. Petersburg, Florida and in California they are building the California High Speed rail at present, and there will be a high speed line that will be built between Dallas & Houston.
We used to have fast trains but technology for traffic control hadn't caught up plus the government regulated them out of business when air travel came along as well as the Eisenhower Interstate system.

In many ways, this country did better before, oh, say, WW2.

I never rode in a train :(
HAHA is amtrak as slow as Via is? I always though t when CN owned the passenger service it was far quicker.
Nah. Amtrak is slower.
@transmonglified lol I think you had an unlucky train experience.
This might be true IF AMTRAK WAS ACTUALLY GOOD!
