He forgets to show one of the most important parts. When installing the clutch conversion kit make sure it is flush with the hub or you will have to break it down again when it doesn't work. You may have to rotate the purple piece a few times to get it flush. Otherwise, this video was very helpful. Thank you.

romeotangohotel when you do decide to do buy the barrnet clutch plate with there pressure plate kit. You will feel the difference with it on compared to the yamaha stock clutch. My wife and I also travel with this bike from California to Key west fl to Virginia and back 8,500 miles after we replace the clutch. Before with 2up bike would cruise around 60 - 70mph know with new clutch system it cruises at 70 - 80 and if you don't pay attention it will cruise at 90mph.

Nice job. Changed the clutch on a '01 650 vstar a while ago. Ugly job where everything from the corroded exhaust manifold nuts to the foot rest and rear brake pedal, engine side covers with oil filter and gaskets had to come out. Made the job much longer.

Just did this on my 07 Royal Star tour deluxe. It's a pretty straightforward job. Folks if you want to keep your pipes oil free, shake of the excess oil when removing the clutches and clutch plates from the container you soak them in overnight. Also, wrap that part of your exhaust with saranwrap to keep the oil off of it. Just don't forget to remove it after. I'm happy with the clutch upgrade, it has a better throttle response when you accelerate. It pulls a bit harder than it did with the stock clutch.

Notice the clutch access. No need to remove saddlebags or seats or gas tanks or any plastic or fairings. Try replacing your clutch on the side of the road or in the parking lot of the motel you stayed in parking lot using just your tour kit tools on a Goldwing..

Can I ask you how did you managed to wear the clutch out enough to require replacement? I have owned 3 Venture’s. I put 138,000 miles on my 1986 Yamaha venture Royale, my 2002 midnight Venture 1300 Had 48,000 miles on it when I sold it..There was not the slightest hint of clutch slippage or clutch drag or shatter or noise on either of those machines. I’m just curious how your clutch got so bad that a required replacement so i can avoid problems on my currant 2008 RS Venture with 32k miles..
. Is it possible you had additives in the oil that contaminated the fiber clutch plates? I have heard that some automobile oil out there have “ friction modifier” additives that can make wet clutches in motorcycles slip.. no one should ever use any automobile oil in their motorcycle engine that uses the same oil to lubricate the clutch&transmission and the engine crankshaft and cylinders. Car oil will not stand up to a condition that takes place in motorcycle transmissions called Shear….
The government asked the oil manufacturers and the car manufacturers how they could make us all get more miles per gallon with our cars. They said, we could thin the oil out.. if every car in the nation gets even 1 mile extra mileage out of every tank of gasoline, that means millions of gallons of gasoline saved every day.
So they thinned out the oil in the late 1980s.. i’m sure everyone has noticed that the recommended oil in cars over the past couple decades has been 5W 20 or 0W 20, instead of 10W-30..The major two items they reduced the percentage of in the additives packages of oil is zinc and phosphorus. Those two ingredients make oil have a stronger film strength -resistance to sheer…..Sheer is when two gears come together under pressure and the metal to metal sliding against each other actually cuts through the oil, like your windshield wiper blade wiping the water off of your windshield, meshing gears with up to 100,000 pounds per square inch of pressure wipe the oil off of the gear faces. Zinc and phosphorus give the oil the strongest film strength to resist this catastrophic condition. car oils have less zinc and phosphorus in it today, because zinc and phosphorus make the oil thicker…. Only Motorcycle oil still has more of the ingredients to resist sheer. there is no place in a car engine that is as severe on oil like in every motorcycle transmission. The toughest place in an engine of a car on oil is where the cam and lifters or rockers meet as the cam is spinning.. that is usually the most severe environment in a car engine on the oil. but that is nothing like the more than 100,000 psi of force scraping the oil off of meshing gears in a motorcycle transmission.. not all motorcycles have 100,000 psi pressure on transmission gear faces, but there are several super bikes out there that have been doing that since 1989. Motorcyclist magazine actually dedicated a multi page warning about using car oil and motorcycles because of the change of the additives package to car oil so get more miles per gallon in cars.. they actually said that there will be catastrophic transmission failures in motorcycles if people use car oil in their engines in the future.. after reading that, I have used nothing but motorcycle specific oil in my transmissions on all my motorcycles. Even the ones with dry clutches..
did you use car oil or some super Duper oil additive? I would like to know what would make a street bike clutch that is not under any severe conditions like racing, what would make that clutch go bad?
There is one scenario that could cause it to go bad. If for some reason the clutch was not releasing all the way like someone that would ride the clutch lever constantly holding it or like in a car if they would rest their foot on the clutch pedal. That would cause the clutch to slip, causing it to burn out/wear out..
I tried to see if there were dents from the fiber clutch plates in your clutch basket. Those dents prevent your clutch from separating when you pull the clutch lever in. The aftermarket fiber clutch plates must be softer than the motorcycles clutch basket or they will put dents/ ware divots in the basket..
and most motorcycles especially Yamaha‘s, the very first metal clutch plate is beveled on the outer edge that faces out. I hope you got them back in in sequence because it will not operate correctly if you do not have that beveled edge metal clutch plate in the first position..
I’m sorry I did not listen to your voice during this video. That whistling was nauseating so I just watched with the sound off

Like the video good information that i can use if or when i need to change my clutch... But man I wanted to reach through the screen and help you out. First i would have handed you a dry rag to wipe those oil covered hands off then took the Damn swivel socket off and put it somewhere until i needed it, yes i was cussing. I think i have issues when it come to someone who uses the wrong tools for the job. Then i would have gotten the extension and the deep socket so you could get those spring bolts in without fighting them like you were doing with oily hands and a swivel socket... Then for a rule of thumb and as Brian Vigue mentioned, always make sure the clutch conversion kit is flush with the hub. and another rule of thumb is when tightening any part with close bolt pattern in close circle you must tighten in sequence to prevent wobble or you will feel it when traveling down the road and it could damage the clutch. Just my two cents

If your talking about the final drive yes you use sae 80 oil. On the cover you should have a big screw were you fill the final drive below that that is a very small screw call the we hole take that screw off. Add oil thru that big screw until oil starts coming out then its full then put small screw back on and big screw then your done......

    Good Video...
I'm not sure if BIG 1 litre plus Yamahas are just harder on clutches in general but On my 1600cc roadstar silverado, I had to replace the clutch due to slipping which became worse under heavy torque. Prior to the clutch going, i had changed over to a good synthetic oil (yamaha and motorcycle compliant) on my twin cause i was riding lots and i'm a synthetic guy. The short of it, litre plus yamaha clutches don't really like synthetic unless, from what i was told, its yamylube synthetic. I wasn't going to pay that kind of money or take the chance that my clutch fails again due to any synthetic. The ins and outs of running synthetic on my bike, well i stopped after clutch replacement and went onto running a premium brand dino oil. So i used Motol oil, bought it bulk from a local repair shop and had no other clutch slippage what so ever...
On gasket replacement i have found its always good to wipe a "thin" smear of heat treated silicone on one side of the gasket just use your finger then press onto the clean case and let dry.. it has never let me down.

I've been using Castrol synthetic oil on my Yamaha venture for over 6 years with no problems. The clutch slippage is do to ware and tear on the clutch mostly the Yamaha spring plate gets worn fast. That's why I went and got barnett clutch upgrade instead that has actually heavy duty individual springs. Since this video I have traveled close to 30,000 miles with wife on back and pulling a trailer and up and down hills with no issues best investment I did.

@@franklisatravels9651 a Barnett upgrade would surely correct. I merely was referring too stock clutch situations. My thoughts were on synthetic oil in general does not work well with stock wet clutches. Not sure how long you were using synth oil before your clutch went. Mine went after two or three oil changes using synthetic, under two up riding and abundance of torque the clutch "plates" couldn't handle it and were done relatively fast. The springs and clutch case were good.. the bike was a 1600 v-twin so synthetic oil it was too slippery for the stock roadstar clutch. Stock yamy wet clutches don't do well with synthetic oils...

I am contemplating an 84 1200 V Royale. I'm not mechanically inclined but willing. Enjoyed the video but would have liked more detail in the verbal description. For instance: is there a right way and wrong way to insert all those plates? You did not mention notches or guides. No disrespect but it was good to watch a video with someone who struggles a bit with tools. My handy buddies grind their teeth watching me work. The major issue with the 84 I'm considering is the 2nd gear is gone (like every VR of this venture) do you have a video for that? I'm feeling more confident watching your video.

You should point out, before you begin removing bolts, it is necessary to drain the oil. This procedure is scarry on paper but very easy for anyone to do.

Hi Frank. The first clutch plate that you put in was that different from the other clutch plates. Also to push the clutch plate in did you just screw them down to keep them from spinning, and did you say you were or were not having trouble with the yamaha crank case gasket. thank you Vince. This will be my first time attempting this.

    • @franklisatravels9651
      @franklisatravels9651  7 років тому

vincent shobe yes the first clutch plate is thinner then the rest of them. after you install the black circle brace right under it. then you install the next plate.
the spring conversion plate when I snug the bolts forgot to push in tight before so the clutch plates were loose that's why I was able to turn it easy. I caught myself and correct it that's why I was able to tighten to the correct pounds.

Michael Owens yes if you put the Barnett clutch pak you dont have to put back the wire spring on. Yes barnett pak cost just under $300 if you buy Yamaha clutch make sure you line up the tabs the same way you take them out. On barnett clutch you won't have to worry about that.

one thing to watch.....the plate can go on in 6 positions as there 6 bolts.....the clutch will only operate properly in 2 of the 6 spots. Yamaha has a index mark on the stock pressure plate to line things up, the Barnett does not.

    • @franklisatravels9651

Neil McRobbie your correct if you are installing Yamaha stock clutch you will have to line up the marks on all clutch plate to work properly. Barnett clutch doesn't have the marking and according to Barnett and Yamaha doesn't required to be line up just put in correctly. it so far working awesome thanks for the. omment...

Venture is not designed for driving around a chimney Decision is Your of course - This solution is for people who want save some money and be sure that is ok. Inside cluth, this metal "half" plate is a spring, makes easy pull cluth. In my case always
this half friction plate was burned there where is this spring. Here In Europe nobody use Barnett and other replacement kit, is not available like in USA. People remove metal plate spring and this thick wire ring set and driving around Europe mountains ;)

Pewnie po dopaleniu oddał moto do serwisu he,he.
