      @Sarah Hamilfan That's like saying "Don't look up the plot to Cats, it'll be a disappointment."
      *THERE'S A DEMONIC BLOOD-THIRSTY BURNING STAIRCASE FROM HELL!* I really don't think 'plot' is why people go see it.

      Right?!? They're name dropped in the song and everything! Maybe it felt a little too obvious to him. Always keep 'em guessing, that sorta thing...

      Sam Hackenson I think it's because the original broadway production of Into The Woods didn't utilize a staircase. It was just in the movie.

      He's talked about how much he loves that number a lot anyways. You must be new if you don't know how much he loves Sondheim and ITW and "On the Steps of The Palace"

      I’m wondering if the only reason is because there’s only low-quality bootleg footage of it, since I haven’t seen him really use many bootleg clips in his videos. The big white staircase may not make much sense, but neither does the Cats staircase, and it’s just as iconic.

    YAAASS REBECCA!!!! SIE ERGIBT SICH NICHT!!! That show shall never die! Honestly though that summery of Rebecca was rather humerous. There are some English demos that you can find here and there on UA-cam, though the ones I recommend searching for first are "She's Invicible" (the German title for which is that phrase at the beginning of my comment) and the title track, "Rebecca."

    • @TerryMannfan

      "Manderley in Flammen," which is more or less the penultimate song of the show. An English demo of that can be found somewhere on UA-cam as "Manderley's On Fire," but more was added to it when it was ready for performances.

      I had to look up the wikipedia page for it to understand why Tommy's description was so funny (note: I hadn't heard of this musical before this video, took him at his word, and thought it sounded so insane it could be amazing) but oh man. The real summary of Rebecca is only slightly less crazy than the plot described here.

  • @jawhite21
    @jawhite21 7 років тому +1

    So many thoughts!
    1. If you haven't read it, you need to read Du Maurier's "Rebecca." It's the epitome of that novel that makes you question whether you, as the reader, are imagining things or if the narrator is taking things too far. The first-person narrator is never given a name, so that's why she's "X." It centers around the narrator's husband's first wife, now dead, whose personality consumes and (metaphorically) haunts the entire house. I had no idea there was a musical of this, and I want to see it now!!!!
    2. In terms of staircases themselves, I find the "Lullaby of Broadway" staircase in "42nd St" more iconic because it's the entry vehicle that all the characters use to convince Peggy to stay in the show. She's already on the stage, ready to leave, but they all descend (and later ascend) it as a means to show her the magic of Broadway. It's the entry and exit point to the magic of musical theatre!

    One of my favorite musical staircase numbers was from the film 'An American In Paris' .... 'I'll build a stairway to paradise. With a new step every day. I'm going to get there at any price. Stand aside I'm on my way'.

  • @freddyw1035
    @freddyw1035 7 років тому +1

    Well... I actually am from Germany and “Rebecca“ is one of my favourite musicals.
    And I'm not sure, if your description of the plot is a serious or a ironic one...
    If you meant it seriously, I'm sorry to dissapoint you, but it is not about an evil staircase :D
    It is based on the novel “Rebecca“ written by Daphne du Maurier and if you're interested in the real story behind those absolute wonderful songs, you could also watch the movie directed by Alfred Hitchcock ;)
    If your description was meant ironic, I have to say “Good joke“. I would have never had such a creative idea about the plot of that musical xD

    Do one about ladders next so you can have 'Orphée aux enfers'. There's a great number in the first act sung by the bored gods watching a man slowly climb the ladder to Olympus. Yes techinally it's an operetta, but lines are spoken rather than sung and it's so silly and breaks the forth-wall so many times, might as well count.

    Thank you for that weird synopsis of "Rebecca", inspiring me to look it up on Wikipedia which led me to the link to the Wikipedia page of one of my favourite theatrical experiences when I was in New York which was "Sleep No More". Happy for the reminder, though now I want to go back to NYC so BAD so I can experience it again!! (Also would love to see ALL the shows on Broadway)

    Rebecca is not the name of the staircase, and the staircase is not cursed. Rebecca was the male main character's first wife. The staircase is merely a set piece, and a part of the Manderley Estate (The musical is based on the novel of the same name by Daphne du Maurier). It is a story of love, obsession, betrayal, and manipulation. Apparently, the American Cast and Crew of Rebecca are trying again to bring the show to Broadway, and they are targeting for an opening performance later this year. I, for one, hope that they can make it happen. The musical seems to be on par with Phantom of the Opera, which happens to be my favorite musical. I'm especially excited to see the entire stage ablaze during the climax of the musical! That looks like it will be cool to witness!

    No love for the staircase from The Will Rogers Follies? Especially with Jerry Mitchell dancing on an Indian drum wearing next to nothing?

    It's good to know that inevitably, on any video ranking anything - even staircases, there will be people decrying that their favourite was omitted :P

    I would suggest that you might have included one of the greatest star turns on a staircase in Broadway history: MAME. When Mame first appears in the musical, once again, Jerry Herman created a brilliant entrance for Angela Lansbury (and those who followed her) when she appeared at the top of her staircase in her chic Beekman Place apartment, holding a bugle while sliding down it and singing "It's Today." The production number that followed was one of the most exciting in Broadway history. Certainly, that entrance was also one of the greatest of star turns. In fact, you used the film from the 1983 revival in your comparison with Lucille Ball; and there are videos posted from the original 1966 production that capture just how exciting it was. (And why Rebecca which has yet to make it to Broadway?)

    No "Stairway to Paradise" from "An American in Paris"? It was my favourite number from that film and I've always enjoyed how it lights up with every step! :)

    Masquerade is my favorite! :) It's really cool to see something so vague. XD I love this staircase and scene in Hello Dolly! :D OH MY GOODNESS THAT STAIRCASE in the last one you mentioned... like the whole show just seems epic and a little scary and I'm a little sad I'll probably never see it. Even though I also don't speak German. XD
    It's also kind of cool to see how staircases really do play a big part in some musicals. Like how Hello Dolly wouldn't be the same without her walking elegantly right in time with the music down the stairs. I never really noticed that.
    And oh my goodness the thought of Rebeca and just.... the idea of demonic staircases is both hilarious and horrifying. XD Especially because she just decides to burn the whole house down. That is one powerful and angry staircase.

    agreed. you flubbed the SUNSET staircase. it made news all on its own when the production began. the whole house was dropped down onto the stage in one big move. also....movie-wise..."I'll Build a Stairway to Paradise" from AN AMERICAN IN PARIS?

    Forgetting Sunset Boulevard's staircase was unfathomable. But still it would have made #2 at best. How, oh how could you have missed the grand, amazing, story and fantasy enwrapping staircases (yes, multiple!) of Follies. Those amazing processions of performers both young and old, real and remembered. And what about "Waiting for the Girls Upstairs" with its nostalgia and revelations so necessary to the plot. How can you forget Mr. Sondheim's greatest moment of pure theatre? For shame, dear friend, for shame.

    I cannot believe you never heard of the novel Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier. It was made into a fantastic film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1940, starring Lawrence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. The movie has a great staircase as well, but the real "demon" is Mrs. Danvers.
    P.S. The staircase doesn't have a name. Rebecca is the dead wife of our lead protagonist.
