    Personally, my vote for Best Musical would go to the "Great Comet," but regardless of whether "Dear Evan Hansen" wins the Tony or not, I genuinely, deeply feel like it would be an egregious injustice if Ben Platt doesn't get the Tony for his performance. What he has achieved on that stage is truly remarkable.

    No, of course people don't leave DEH saying that they're going to take advantage of a tragedy for personal gain. Of course not. And I really haven't seen anyone saying that Evan Hansen is totally, 100% good either. Everyone in the audience recognizes that what Evan did was horrible and completely wrong, even if he didn't mean to. But I think, honestly, it's a missed opportunity. I think the show would be enriched if Evan dealt more with "hey, I fucked up, and I completely didn't mean to, but I did and now I've got to face the consequences". And, oh my GOD, I cannot believe that in the epilogue, Zoe says that Evan's lies and deceit helped her parents. That's what disappointed me the most about the show. Evan's lies should not have been treated as okay, good, or beneficial in any way. Even though nobody takes from DEH that they should take advantage of a tragedy, the lies should have been treated as manipulative and horrible, like they actually are. Evan Hansen didn't mean to lie, but he did, and he didn't really deal with that properly.

  • @evva8643

    On Evan Hansen: I'm a teenager with pretty severe anxiety and depression, so you'd think I would be guaranteed to sympathize with Evan and, as a result, love the show. The thing is, I walked away from it feeling the opposite of uplifted. My problem is this: we never really see Evan grow from his mistakes. There are apologies, but everyone just kind of... forgets about it? The epilogue feels really unearned because Evan never goes through the process of learning from his mistakes. He just feels bad about them and everyone kind of shrugs and leaves him alone. Mental illness is no joke and it can make you do terrible things, but that's not an excuse for hurting people to the extent that Evan does. I would have appreciated him coming clean at the end of Act 1, then letting him get help and grow and make real, actual friends in Act 2. That's an ending that I, as someone who suffers from a lot of what Evan struggles with, would find inspirational, and even motivational to people struggling to ask for help.

    • @bethanywingenfeld766
      @bethanywingenfeld766 7 років тому +9

      I feel like DEH is really preachy too. Like, at the end there's this whole bit where Zoe basically says "Evan, your lies helped my family!" and that was really messed up? Because it at least makes me feel like they're saying mental illness can be used as an excuse for things, and not that it needs to be treated seriously. Evan doesn't ever really face the consequences of his actions, and he doesn't grow (like you explained). It really rubs me the wrong way just because it doesn't feel like a show that people who *are* mentally ill can turn to for reassurance, it just feels like pandering for a neurotypical audience who want to wash away guilt about real issues.

    • @evva8643
      @evva8643 7 років тому +5

      The "your lies helped my family" bit REALLY bothers me, because that is NOT the message the musical should be trying to leave us with. The silver lining in Evan's actions is that he finally has reached a low point that he can use to grow from so he knows how to avoid creating a similar mess in the future, NOT that his lies actively helped the Murphys. That's not just a bad message to send to young mentally ill people, it's bad storytelling in general. It condones actions that the audience should only forgive because of the fucked-up place they come from, not because Evan's lies in themselves are beneficial.

    • @amanday3103
      @amanday3103 7 років тому +12

      evva Ok, this is kind of off-topic, but thank you for saying mental illness is not an excuse to hurt people. I have a friend who always brushes off rudeness and hurtfulness as her mental illness, but never even apologizes for it. Just because it was caused partly by your mental illness, doesn't mean you didn't do it and it didn't hurt.

    • @evva8643
      @evva8643 7 років тому +6

      It's absolutely not an excuse. Part of coping with mental illness is learning how to minimize not only its effects on your own mind, but its influence on how you treat others. I'm easily overwhelmed and get really irritable, especially in social situations, so I make sure to let my friends know that I might have to leave a party early, or I'll excuse myself when I start feeling anxious and just sit in the bathroom for a few minutes to cool down.

    Tommy, I agree with you about Miss Saigon. I suggest a revival of David Henry Hwang's play M. Butterfly instead. It completely deconstructs the white savior archetype and stereotypes about East Asian women. And it's written by a Chinese-American man too. It even won the Tony for Best Play in 1988. I. JUST. WANT. AN. M. BUTTERFLY. REVIVAL. WHEN. WILL. IT. HAPPEN.

    What makes this year's show so exciting is the feeling that everyone is going in on a level playing field. Last year the TONYs were so saturated with one particular entity, it made me largely apathetic to them. This year there seems to be little consencus over who's going to win. We just don't know. And this uncertainty almost certainly guarantees surprises along the way, which is what I think makes for a great awards show.

    • @kennybrightwell1877
      @kennybrightwell1877 6 років тому

      As a fan of both, I respectfully refute you're argument. I Am the One is about a frustrated husband trying to reach his emotionally and mentally distant wife as their long dead son talks over him and distracts her. Good for You, on the other hand, is more intimate, and is more about Evan's guilt over the lie he told personified by mental representations of his mother and the only two people he could call friends.

    the fact that evan's lie isn't revealed or he doesn't get called out on it, it's for me what rounds up the greatness of the show: the consequences Evan faces for his actions are completely intimate, this event and what he's done, impacts on his feelings and his actions in the future. I read the book recently and I was waiting for this big "HE LIED TO US! but he still had good intentionsBUT HE LIEDbla bla bla" scene and I think that could have killed the show or weakend it, because I don't know about you, but I've seen that a thousand times.

    On Miss Saigon: As a Vietnamese-American who wants to go into theatre, I have really complicated feelings about this show. On one hand, it is the one show that has a Vietnamese voice and I like the music. On the other hand, that Vietnamese voice is very stereotyped (Asians: we're either whitewashed or stereotyped). I've seen justifications for Miss Saigon that claim that it's a story about family and immigration issues, and while that's true, I feel like these issues can be shown a better way. There doesn't need to be be some American savior or helpless foreigner. I know so many people, like my parents, who were total bad asses and made it out on their own merit. Their stories should be the ones that get told, not this one.
    Tl; dr: I'm also meh.

    Heyo thanks for talking about my comment/the article! (it was definitely the same one, I think it was just one of those situations where there's 2 different headlines for some reason). Your problems with the implication of a "punishment" for Evan are on point, I totally agree. Also, I've never actually critically thought about how the social media aspect of the show related to the rest of it - I thought it was just a "hey guys look at us we're relevant to today!!!" sort of thing - but you genuinely just cracked the code for me and now I'm even MORE conflicted about who I want to win, so thanks for that.

      CinnamonCari yeah, I don't think anyone who doesn't take musical theater seriously would take on a monster of a role that is George. But I definitely do think the shows limited run may be because Jake Gyllenhaal makes acting a priority, not necessarily theater in general. That being said, being in a show puts a hold on any other film projects he may want to pursue, so the opportunity cost of SITPWG is high for featuring an actor in as high demand as Jake

    The article about Dear Evan Hansen reminds me of when people call Connor the bad guy and Mike Faist comes bursting through a wall or something in order to explain that everyone plays a character with dimension and all the characters are explored as thoroughly as possible. For example Cynthia's tendency to follow trends. Jared's own anxiety he hides behind sarcasm and Alana, who tries to hide her feelings of emptiness behind keeping herself busy. And I disagree with the Lala land comment lol. I think a great discussion could be had about the different audiences and fandoms of Great Comet and Dear Evan Hansen

    Hi I live in Australia so we've had no production of the big four Musicals this year, but I've listened and seen what I could on UA-cam, Apple Music and social media an HD Simulcasts and I love the Great Comit soooo much. It's such a game changer. Evan is charming but that's all. It's not edgey, its formulaic. It's the same rehash from the 'new' musicals of the nineties. Ditto Grounghog. Both very lovely shows and happily will have great lives, both of then. Come from Away is a bit of magic. I love a weepy and this delivers. I hope it get seen around the world, but I suspect it'll be more community theatre than big corporate cartels. It is very lovely ❤️ The Great Comit is the Musical that will travel. Like I said it is a game changer. It borrows from Brechtian expressionism as well as 15th Century Venetian and Neapolitan Opera. I love it. It excites me. The Tonys have always given the award to the safer choice

  • @marieg353

    I for one love Evan Hansen as a character. He truly has flaws and he does bad things, but he's not some piece of garbage either--just like most real people. "Role-model" characters usually aren't very realistic or relatable. I think it's perfectly justifiable to like or dislike Evan Hansen because he is complex and human. But it's hard not to respect him as a character. As for whether or not he gets what he deserves, I think that's debatable. But even if he deserved worse, isn't there room for mercy? Not to mention, people don't always get what they deserve in real life, so why shouldn't art reflect that?
    Also, I noticed in the comments on the DEH video that several people were discussing how Evan is presented in the show's marketing as this ultra-relatable character. I thought it was a great conversation because here's the thing: I can kind of relate to Evan Hansen, but I don't identify with him nearly as much as I do with Pierre in The Great Comet. And I'm in high school. I don't think there's such a thing as a universally relatable character. Evan speaks to some people because of his mental illness, his loneliness, etc. Pierre speaks to me because of his existentialism and his introspection. Any good character will resonate with some more than others. Variety in characters reflects variety in people.

She did receive an honorary Tony for her life's work in the theater but I think it's her time to win a Tony. She did win a Drama Desk Award so I hope the odds are in her favor. Greenwood is a designer who's designs are not showy they instead support the character and story.

    I don't really get the white savior argument against Miss Saigon. I understand the upset about the prostitution and Engineer stereotypes, but it is quite apparent throughout the show that these characters act this way in order to appeal to what they believe is successful in America, and during the time period, it wasn't an inaccurate assumption to make about American culture. As far as Chris goes, this is the Vietnam War, a war in which America lost, and our presence only complicated matters further. Chris, although not the bad guy of the story, is extremely problematic, and a lot of what occurs in the show is his fault. I have seen the show multiple times- I've never read John or Chris as a white savior. If anything, I've always read it as a white guy who buys into stereotypes about eastern culture and in result, ruins a young girl's life. I can see the argument about her desperation for Tam to be raised in America, but I think, during the time, a lot of countries felt America was a safe place to live, and I think that was less about race relations as much as it was the state of Vietnam after the war. I think it tells an incredible relevant story about American interference, American nationalism, and the effects stereotypes can have on people. I've just never read the story as a promotion of the "white America saves the day over naive Asians" stereotype.

    what happened with Anastasia? I feel like it was really hyped but then nothing major happened at the Tony's for them.

      Brigitte Espenschied (My best guess) That was because it was a middling play??? Like, people were excited because this is one of the few non-Disney princess movies, and it was getting a musical. But perhaps it leaned too far into that novelty, or perhaps into nostalgia, so that it ended up suffering. However, it now exists, and if you like Anastasia, that's a pretty big deal.

    okay this is unrelated to the video, but I just noticed that the intro jingle was "musical theatre mash" instead of "you're watching musical theatre mash". when did that happen and why the change?

      I'm not a massive fan either. It was ok but it felt really slow and long and didn't seem to have a very clear ending. It frustrated me greatly.

      It's bland, and most of its songs are lackluster and forgettable. Including the one that won best song in a movie this year.

    Loved getting to hear more of your thoughts on DEH. I remember in my early experiences with the show I very much sympathized with Evan. But then I shared it with a friend who pretty much loathed him for his lying and manipulating - she sympathized with the Murphys and couldn't abide by Evan's behavior because of it. At first it shocked me, but I began to understand. Now I feel like I appreciate the complexities of the show and its morality a lot more. But all of this talk about how Evan is manipulative and what that means has left a bad taste in my mouth about the show and a lot of its fans, unfortunately.

    I agree with your discussion of DEH.... I felt so much dread watching it, thinking that there was going to be a huge exposing of his lies and everyone would publicly crucify him and I honestly just didn't want to see that, it would be awful. He came clean to the people he truly needed to and I think that was okay.
    The thing that DOES bother me about DEH is that the show doesn't include the actual Connor at all. Like....the writers of the show used his life/death as a plot device and it just feels cheap and gross to me that they didn't actually develop his character in any real way? It's a show centered around him but they didn't actually give him a voice within the narrative and that's upsetting to me and somehow just feels disrespectful.... I wish I could explain this better but maybe someone else can jump off of what I'm saying.

      As someone who saw the show and then got to talk about it with all my friends afterwards I think Connor not being used as an actual character just an idea of the character is really important and it plays into a lot of the idea that sometimes all that exists is the perception of something, if that makes sense? Connor is a very important character but him he himself isn't important to the plot just the perception of him.

      I mean, I understand the purpose and what it symbolizes within the story but to me it still feels dismissive of the life of a teen who committed suicide and obviously struggled with mental illness himself and it just makes me uncomfortable. (shrug)

      I feel the exact same way! I've only listened to the soundtrack/ read the plot summary so I'll admit that I may not have full understanding of how they deal with Connor's legacy in the end but the show is definitely unsettling to me. So when I hear people talking about You Will be Found as like an uplifting song, I just wonder if they understand that it's all fabricated and in fact Evan is covering up who Connor really was by morphing him into a stand in for his own wants and desires. Idk I think that song is dark af, with all the facebook statuses just making it feel even more disingenuous and performative. They even dedicate like a grove of trees or something to him and he didn't care about trees or hiking at all (or maybe he did but who even knows we know nothing about him). I don't think it cheapens the show, I still think it's interesting and I even like it but it comes off as tone deaf to the actual subject matter that it's presenting. In any case that's just my take on it, which could totally be mislead by not having actually seen the show.
