I always thought that the Magazine album The Correct use of Soap was the most grown up, mature music. Great album. Still stands the test of time brilliantly. Thought it was great in 1980 and it’s still great in 2022. Those who know, know right. Well done Howard. Nice1 Sir. Very nice indeed. I thank you.
Francisco Vazquez totally agree - remember having the album in 1979 after swapping it with a school friend for my copy of All Mod Cons - think I won the deal
Great to hear people say how good that album was..I was into Stranglers and Pistols..then heard 'give me everything's and thought music had just gone up a gear!..but my mates didn't seem to pick up on it...public didnt pick up on it much either..became a cult thing I thought..now I read people leaving great comments about that album and I am so glad that there were people with ears and taste and not just me thinking it was great..I'm not mad! :D
I'm with you almost in totality, though, lyrically - albeit in a different style - Ray Davies is without parallel. But - Howard is certainly well ahead of 99% of what is and what has been.
Wow! This was 2012, he's looking good. He's older than Me. Ace! Mr. Devoto, You are A Musical and Literary Genious and You have always inspired me since 1978, when I left school and 1st started playing & writing music myself. It's great to see & hear you on this. Long may you run Sir.
Howard Devoto is a musical genius, one of the best ever. To follow up the early fantastic albums with "No Thyself" was pure magic. All the musicians ,then and now,are brilliant. Roll-on the next album!!!!!!!
I don't know too much about how the band were promoted back in the day , but perhaps just unlucky not to have been much bigger , they for one thing , were very ahead of their time ! You got to know that Magazine were one of Radioheads favourite bands !
I'm pleased you've yet to top yourself ! I don't think he was universally liked in the early days , and perhaps he did sometimes come across as a bit aloof and even arrogant , but in these interviews he comes across as a very nice bloke ! Anyone out there met him or know him ?
I've just read elsewhere that one of his college lecturers had a friend called Andy Devoto and he liked the name, but it was actually Pete Shelley who told a couple of music journalists that was Howard's surname and he was happy to be stuck with it.
Tom Artrocker meets Howard Devoto of Magazine - Part 1 1014pm 21.2.23 there was a guy in the camera shop who looked like devoto a younger version... and he sold me a fine light meter.
I never would’ve picked Howard for a Don Henley fan. Donna Summer has grace, style and damn that girl can sing, but Don (The Eagles) Henley ?!? Bland and booooring
Love you Howard Devoto thank God you never committed suicide; there is a lot of love for you mister believe it

What an amazing band Magazine were/are. Thank God Howard's still with us. x
To me Second hand daylight is one of the best albums ever.. Thanks Howard!!!

@@cliveedwards2958 thanks for sharing man, those are really the important things behind the music...
@@fvazquez64 great to know that at least a few of us bought that album!
I bought this Album in 1982, my favorite
Much respect for Howard and his genius songs!
Arguably our best lyricist.
Superb body of work.
Superb comeback.

I wish there were more of him speaking on da tube... He's great. Somebody worth knowing.
His Shot by both sides was the gap between Punk and New Wave. Brilliant song
Very surprising to me. Never heard Howard speak candidly/privately, what an erudite chap. Pleasantly surprised. Thanks Howard.
Howard, you have been an artistic inspiration for me for well over 30 years. I hope you keep on "keeping on". I quite enjoyed this interview!
so this is Real Life....your telling me...and everything is where it ought to be...
I have LOVED him for 43 years! dx
such a great person..
It is surreal to see legendary Devoto talking like an ordinary guy you’d easily run into on the street or meet at a pub..

love you Howard thanks for 'Real Life' x
such a great lyricist...a poet x

wish i could meet Howard x
Been watching Magazine on TOGWT videos on YT. Superb. Watch them

Perhaps my favourite lyricist of all time. Magazine remain one the best bands of the post-punk era. That they were not more successful beggars belief.
I feel sad that he is/ has been suicidal. He's lovely. Seemingly sweet. If he's looking for a date...
One of the best 50 bands ever!!!
I NEED another album and tour,or another tour using any of the previous songs would do.
Whew i thought his hand was stuck to his face for a moment...
Insecure posture - very intelligent man but feel he is quite shy - one of my favourite artists
Musical Genius, Very Interesting Bloke !
1985 indeed was a difficult music year
6.10 Yes, same here, give myself a break & try smiling. 1979 style.

Curious how he self soothes at 230
This was before Pete Shelley passed I’m assuming.
Yemaybe
i love me sum Magazine and HD so where does the nom de punk Devoto emanate from anyone know?
Back in the 70s I read it was his grandmother's name.
I've just read elsewhere that one of his college lecturers had a friend called Andy Devoto and he liked the name, but it was actually Pete Shelley who told a couple of music journalists that was Howard's surname and he was happy to be stuck with it.

Was not expecting that speaking voice. I thought he'd sound like Kenneth Williams. Is Howard married/dating?
what were the preperatins
Tea
Howard is a rare breed. He's not egotistic. Real Life is underrated unfortunately...
How is Joan Jett in the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame and Magazine is not. Most Underrated Band Ever!!!
I never would’ve picked Howard for a Don Henley fan.
Donna Summer has grace, style and damn that girl can sing,
but Don (The Eagles) Henley ?!? Bland and booooring
That song is very depressing though. I can't listen to it without crying. I wouldn't say bland.
im disapointed in ex magazine hero,......did he say ...donna summer? i think these people try to to disapinte you by destroying ur image of them.
d
Or maybe it's time for you to grow up? What are you, stuck at 14?
He meant Gorgon
He meant Gordon Sumner
