Howard Devoto was a truly great punk and of course post-punk frontman singer.
He was very non-mainstream though, the reason why he was so obscure in English music.

both groups were truly original. magazine was super avant garde, buzzcocks really fresh sound. we had just dross prescription pop before or silly prog rock before this. now we had interesting lyrics and more complex music. real life is the only thing i still listen to in my world of jazz and classical music.

I like Devoto and a lot of Magazine stuff - but I'm really glad he left the Buzzcocks. The subsequent Buzzcocks are about as important to me as the Ramones, or the Pistols. Same league of sophisticated pop simplicity and punch. And around @22:04 Shelley explains what would help people sort out our fucked up mess today! RIP

Magazine is amazing. Bands like the sparks and bands like the fall and then the smiths were bands that to me had something intelligent to say and deep. Like peter Gabriel's earlier work. It was good having bands that gave you more than the 4 chords and angst.
Dont get me wrong the Buzzcocks were brilliant. And when you were in the mood for that energy , it was great. So yeah something for everyone.

GOOD EARS 'Metal Machine' soul brother! It's been 10?15? YEARS since I could readily hear some short blats of sound from of my ancient vinyl copy of that record. It's those Brits and their fearlessly-eclectic musical taste and vocabulary, their encyclopedic musical knowledge and their Devil-may-care ''take it or leave it''' attitude about who may like it and who may not.
