When comparing instant coffees it is good to know that there are two different ways that instant coffee can be made; either through freeze-drying or spray-drying. Here is a clear video on the freeze-drying process: ua-cam.com/video/4G5LcVUcWAg/v-deo.html And here is the process of spray-drying: ua-cam.com/video/u2LhmpDUjKk/v-deo.html As you can see, freeze-drying is quite an intensive and therefore relatively expensive process when compared to spray-drying. As a side-effect, cost-cutting focused manufacturers of instant coffee use spray-drying even though freeze-drying is superior in all respects preserving the flavor of the fresh coffee extract. I would not bother drinking spray-dried coffee in a taste test and would rather stick to the better freeze-dried variety which is really not a huge difference in price. A comparison of Nescafe Taster's choice, Jacobs Kronung, and Mount Hagen or Mulvadi would be much easier to compare and overall a decent surrogate for a fresh cupa.
Instant coffee is all my parents drink, and I remember it having a burnt bitter flavour. I only use ground coffee/beans, but I picked up a jar of Nescafe Hazelnut (because it was on sale and I was curious)...I cannot tell the difference :) It's sooo smooth, and tastes exactly liked my usual brewed coffee! My mind is blown! I will make sure to have a jar of instant in the cupboard now, in case of emergency ;P
I would assume if the hazelnut flavored instant tastes exactly like oyur brewed then you are using flavored coffee. So all bets are off, really really cannot tell the complexities of the coffee when you have it flavored or when you use flavored creamer. And the coffee roasters know this, so they maximize profits using the cheaper beans because they can get away with it. Not picking at your comment, just stating what's going on and why the flavored tastes great. It's the flavoring that tastes great, not the coffee under the flavor, it's pretty much masked at that point. I do like the flavored one as well, but for me it's more of a desert thing than a morning brew. Whatever your preference as long as you are enjoying it, all that matters ;- )
Invader coffee has some of the best coffee I’ve ever had! I love how the original invader blend is air roasted, preventing the beans from being too acidic or burnt, but my favorite coffee that they offer is the mexican chocolate. It is the smoothest best flavored coffee blend that I have ever had!! Another good blend that I’ve tried is the Whiskey blend which is my third favorite. No bitterness yet deep flavor, it is to die for!! Finally I love how the company is run by a vertern and how the website is super user friendly and delivery is fast and on time. I highly, highly, highly suggest you get yourself some invader coffee.
Medium roast does not mean it will have a mild flavor or be less bitter....I know why you'd think that but no. Pike's place is a blend of coffees from different regions. One of the coffees in it tends to be bitter- thats what you're tasting- so it's that region (vareity) of coffee that you don't like....I know Italian coffee tends to be bitter- thats why they invented the cappuccino there which is 50% milk 50% coffee..Perhaps ur not a fan of Italian coffee? or as u said you didnt add enough sugar?
The more bitter a coffee (such as Pikes) the better it pairs with milk and sugar which is how most drink their coffee. I've had every one of these brands and any one of them can be made to taste OK- each brand follows different rules in how they should be made and the mistake most people make is using 1 rule for different brands.....Some will taste better without sugar or without sugar and milk (like Folgers) and some will taste better with less water if ur adding milk n sugar...
Well at least you guys helped me change my mind about even trying instant coffee at all. I'm a new coffee drinker but I think I'm gonna start out with real coffee, at least for now. Thanks

I make my bullet coffee with instant coffee every morning before work. Yummy.
I agree with Valdez, Bustelo is the best.

I'm addicted with Folgers Instant Coffee & my favorite ground coffee ☕ is now history.
Just ordered a 7oz can of Cafe Bustelo for $8 with free shipping. Never tried it but I'm thinking it can't be worse than Folgers :)
Bustelo is the best
You're crazy! :p

I'm not sure if you can buy it in stores, but I like Four Sigmatic's Mushroom Coffee. It's an instant coffee I get on Amazon.
If enough people submit different coffees we might do a video comparing the best of the best coffee from the best subscribers :P
Since losing my sense of taste thanks to covid I have turned to instant coffee for the strength of my "perceived" taste.
It isn't black coffee if it has anything in it. You are a "sugar no cream" person, NOT a "take it black".
