Hello Patrick :) 15 years I use only .Win :) .. and I don't know how I will get along with this operating system in macbook. but I decided to purchase. am also wondering which laptop to buy. Whether it is AIR M 2 16 GB 256 GB SSD / or M2 Pro 16 GB 256 GB. I will use it mainly for browsing, but I work with many tabs. they say that: when you work a long time on it. it starts to heat up, and loses performance. also said: For browsing with 15-20 tabs. 8 GB of RAM is very little and it is good that it is at least 16 GB (for browsing in Chrome) Can I get how things stand with you and your opinion if you have practice while working. I watched the video and more videos, but I still can't figure out about multitasking - browsing which model would be better I like air because it's light. and the display is slightly larger congratulations: George
I agree with your recommendation. I was looking at the M2 Air and started upgrading it and the cost was getting crazy. So I went with the M1 Pro 14 and I am so happy I did! Got more computer for the money I would have spent with the M2 Air.
I was interesting in the m2 air too. But the only thing i like more on the air m2 is the design. Therefore i think the price with 10core CPU and 1TB space is to high.
Hello Patrick. I’m new to your channel I went for the M1 Pro 14 inch as I needed the ports and couldn’t find the dongles needed. I have had it for 7 months and I love it.
I was having trouble deciding between the two so I bought both and tested them out for two weeks. In the end, I returned the pro because it was heavy and the display differences weren’t as drastic as I thought they’d be. I love promotion on my phone but barely noticed it on the computer. Display was a little bit brighter but really didn’t matter. Battery life on the air was better. Strangely enough, I preferred typing on the air over the pro as well. Since I don’t need it for video editing or high intense tasks beyond manipulating large files in excel, the air made the most sense for me. Great video!
People really underestimate the difference in form factors. The 14 pro looks and feels almost as chunky as my 2009 13 pro with an optical drive. Great for a true pro machine but there’s no benefit for a moderate user like me.
By now there is a sea of UA-cam videos about MacBooks and comparisons. The way you condensed the information and framed it makes this video truly stand out from the rest. At the end of the day most people are watching these videos to make a decision and you really hit the nail on the head. Great work.
Was going to get an M2 Air with 16/512 as a CS student but with Black Friday I got a brand new 14” Pro for $1599. Cant be happier as it cost less than the same spec’d air.
I went back and forth on this a lot. I ended up doing the unthinkable - M2 air with 24g RAM with 256 SSD. With Cloud, I haven't needed to store a ton of files, I usually use a handful of applications, and am a programmer who needs the boosted RAM. Maybe I made the wrong choice, but really loved the idea of M2 air being sleek + light
I went for the M2 MacBook Air with 10-core GPU, 16GB and 512GB SSD. Works great for me! Also loved how light the M2 Air is which is perfect for me to travel with!
I got the exact same configuration and have not had a single issue at all. I have noticed it gets quite warm/hot but never noticed anything else or had any other issues
Damn... why did they have to make the air so pretty 😭 I absolutely love that midnight shade. But the pro sounds more like what I would need and likely last longer.
Just letting all here know that Best Buy currently has the 14in M1 Pro MBP for only $1599. That price point really cinches the deal for me. M2 14/16 MBP models coming in next 45 days will not be that much more performant, so getting the $400 savings for the 14in M1 Pro MBP is a killer deal. I compared to M2 MBAir at a couple of hundred bucks cheaper, and the decision was a no-brainer, at least to me.
and this is exactly why i read comments. i was just about to buy the m2 MBA with 512gb and then i came across this. fucking thanks 😂 now i got the M1 MBP for the same price. Edit: they even have the 1TB MBP for $2099
Decided to get the air. Way cheaper. Most people don’t need those specs and don’t need the ports considering we probably already have all those dongles. Only reason to get the pro IMO is for heavy cpu usage which in that case I’d recommend the 16 because it handles temperature better. I thought best thing is to stick with the air and if I outgrow it, consider an upgrade from there. Especially when the 14 mbp is about a 50 percent increase for little difference in day to day usage. Why use your laptop for high quality videos when most people watch media on a tv. If you’re considering purchasing a mbp I’m sure you have money or already own a nice TV
lol this is just cope because you couldn’t afford the objectively better mbp 14. The 14 and 16” both handle heat excellently as they both have capable thermal systems. The mbp has a way faster gpu and way faster encoders as well as storage. So you can’t even compare its performance to m2. And most people would probably like having a top of the line screen they can carry around everywhere.
@@michealadebz I actually own the 14 m3 max now but still carry around my m2 air for traveling. I probably watch more media on the go on my phone than on a laptop and most people don’t need fast gpu or encoders just for browsing the internet.
@@stephan24297 might as well carry the 14” m3 everywhere with its way better screen and speakers and sell the m2. I never grasp that “weight” arguments between the pros and airs. The discrepancies between the two shouldn’t affect you unless you’re anemic.
Power wise, the m1 basic is good enough for me, but the design of the m2 (esp with midnight) is so delicious that I am considering going for that one anyway.
I was looking forward to get the new MacBook Air M2 model, but as I was in a quick trip to the US I couldn't wait that long to get an upgraded MacBook Air, and I found a MacBook Pro M1 Pro with a $400 USD discount, so there weren't any doubts so I got the Pro instead, it was about the same price or cheaper than an upgraded Air M2 or Pro M2
That’s what I am going to do as well. I really wanted the M2 but in order to appreciate it to its fullest. I found that I’d need to upgrade the ram and ssd. That makes the price the same as the discounted pro. I found it $400 off on Best Buy.
I went with the base model M2 Air for these reasons : 1) It's my 1st Mac. 2) My use case scenario involve only for office work, and content consumption 3) I could have gone for the way cheaper M1 but I prefer the new design and that feeling of owning something newer, I'm sure you know what I mean 🙂. I did try edit iphone videos on some common apps (I cannot afford and will not spend that much for Final Cut Pro) and it performs well. Gaming is somehow not as smooth as in the iPad (on some games), probably because of compatibility since this is a new chip. Some games from steam do make the laptop heats quickly (but expect this on both Air models). I think based on your use case scenario you would know where to draw the line and this video helps much much more in that decision making. I came to a conclusion that if base model is a no no because you need faster SSD, more space and more RAM, then the Macbook Air is not for you. Sorry for the long comment 😀
I did a separate video on how great the base model is for a lot of people. This one is for those who walk the line between Air and Pro. Which iPad are you using for your games ?
@@PatrickRambles iPad Air 4 🙂. Yes not even the M1 iPad. I just didn't upgrade coz the iPad Air 4 can even edit simple videos well using Lumafusion. Even 4k!
@@93hothead what do you mean? People dont buy macs for doing office work and content consumption? If you meant gaming, I did it just to try it out thats not the purpose. I have a gaming PC for serious gaming
I did have the midnight m2 air 8cpu/10gpu 512/16gb. I returned it for the m1 pro 14. I'm super happy. I love the better screen of the m1 pro 14, better speakers, more ports, better cooling.
After my research, this is my conclusion: - MBA M1 16GB if you have short budget. - MBA M2 16GB if you really like the new design and can pay extra 300$ for it. - MBP M1 14" if you really need more performance under 2000$.
@@themoon4770 try geting a used MacBook Air M1 with the 16GB of ram (if you can also with 512gb of storage). although i love the iPad Pro, there aren't as many professional video editing apps on it that i have seen that are as good as IMovie on macOS. although i might be wrong, i'd recommend getting the laptop and if you really need a tablet, a base model iPad and the 1st generation apple pencil. i feel like that would make a bit more sense but it more or less comes down to preference.
@@garbagecan1522 honestly it's not really worth it, it has almost the same performance as the mba with the 8c gpu but it's still a good laptop. same rules should apply as the m1 mba for the best performance for the money
@@garbagecan1522 actually i bought MBP M1 16GB/512GB because it was the best option in my country. Other models were very expensive or out of stock. End buy that version for less than 1400€. It is very good, can't complain about anything.
If you are planning for the improved spec model of the new m2 Air with something like 16GB/512GB, it comes to $1,700. Best Buy currently has the base model 14" m1 macbook pro on sale for $1,800, which at that point is a no brainer. More processing power, video encoding engine, 120hz larger promotion display for an extra $100.
Unfortunately, it's not quite that simple. For a lot of people, the aesthetics and feel are as much of a consideration as the performance. For me, the Air is just feels better. I'm trying to decide if the power and display of the Pro are enough to overcome how much more I just love how the Air feels.
@@brianmarkgriffin weird, I'll never understand that. I'm someone who cares about two things: power, and longetevity. It could look like an actual poop smeared beer can and if it was powerful and would last me 5-10 years, I'd buy it. The M2 air will almost definitely last shorter than the m1 pro, especially a base model
@@brianmarkgriffin I'm not hating btw, there's no "right" way to be in this regard. My reasoning is the same reason I ripped the glass off the front of my PC and replaced it with mesh from a hardware store, with screws holding it in 😂
@@billjamal4764 I understand why you view them that way, for sure. I am just always looking for a balance between something that does what I want it to do, and something that looks and feels good. The Air just feels better to me. However, I did end up choosing the Pro, largely because of the screen.
@@brianmarkgriffin I wish they would've just given us a better option with the air. I think they could've done much better, especially for $1200. I mean, I had a 4k screen laptop with an i7 I bought 4 years ago for less than 1k, I'm sure they could've given us a better deal
I have the M2 13" pro. I loaded it up with 24gb RAM and 1TB SSD and it cost significantly more than a M1 Pro but it's what I wanted. I got it specifically because I was going to get an air until I found out that. the cases are painted rather than the colour being in the metal. I have a habit of tapping my nails on my laptop when I'm thinking and I don't want it to take the paint off after a couple of years. The M1 Pro is too big and heavy for the amount of travelling I do and I have a beefy desktop computer when I'm at home.
I got an 14 inch MacBook Pro in February, I’m now starting to a tiny bit of regret because I’m gonna start traveling a lot again, and that laptop, no matter how you slice and dice it, it’s just freaking heavy. The problem is I’ve gotten so used to the performance he can give me, so I can’t go back.
My M1 Pro Macbook Pro never leaves the dock on my desk nowadays and when I leave the house I take my iPad Mini on a folio case with a 7 inch bluetooth keyboard. The mini can do all productivity tasks you will probably need to do on the road and save the tasks that need more oopf for when I get home :)
As a grad student- I’m going for the M2 MB Air since it’s light and portable. Hopefully they worked out the kinks in the keyboard which sometimes got stuck on my 2018 mb air.
Where I’m living in Canada the m2 air is sold out everywhere. Even though the mba was my first choice, the pro m2 is almost the same price and has the active cooling system. I’m not crazy on high tech designs so I’m cool with not having the latest notch design. Afterall the performance is what matters
I think you might be forgetting that some people don't want the form factor of a 14" pro and spec up an air because it's what they want to carry around.
I got the Pro and I love it. The only downside is that the build quality feels a bit more "hollow" if you know what I mean. The Airs are more crammed inside and there's less of that echo/empty space sound and feel when you type or tap on the chassis. Apart from that, the Pro is the way to go.
I was torn. I got a 512gb m2 air from military store for 1100 tax free. I was very happy. I’ve been with airs for 10 years. However, 30 mins away I saw they had 2021 Apple recertified MacBook Pro M1 Pro 8 core cpu, 14gpu 512gb and 16gb ram open box for 1029…. I couldn’t resist, I bought it, Apple extended warranty to 1 year and it was 1100 out the door. So I returned m2 air. The M1 Pro is a little heavier but it’s so damn nice. Got one of those flush adapters and put a 512gb micro ssd in it permantly, with tons of videos and stuff for traveling. IMO. The M1 Pro is amazing. The m2 air is amazing too. But at same price point. Got so much more double ram. Etc
Thank you for the clarity! I already own the M1 Pro with 16GB RAM and 1TB storage (10-core CPU and 16-core GPU), but I honestly regret not upgrading to the 32GB or 64GB memory option for future proofing reasons. I figured the M2 Air offering 24GB was a slight upgrade and I'd be open to the idea of giving up the beautiful display and sound quality on my M1 Pro... I guess switching to the M2 Air isn't worthwhile after all... I seriously wish apple would allow me to upgrade my current model but that's asking for too much, I guess. Thanks again for your help!
If you can find a good deal on the M1 Pro then go for it because you can get the base model from retailers like Costco for the same price as it would be to buy the M2 Air when it’s upgraded to the same RAM and Storage as the M1 Pro, yet the Pro is just much quicker and will last you longer 👍
I went with a middle of the road 14in M1 Pro, 16gb 1TB. Love it, still pretty portable and really fast. But that midnight finish looks so good! Might just have to get a base model for travel lol!
I looked at the pricing. The air with 16 gb and 512 ssd was pretty much the same price as the Pro 14 base. Which is also 16gb ram 512 ssd. But the screen was much better with the pro and the pro doesn’t down-clock and thermal throttle.
I got myself maxed out air M2. For me personally, portability and fanless is a future. I currently own 15" - which never leaves my desk, its huge bulky 2kg brick. 13" - which is of the same form, size and weight as M1 PRO, and even this 13" for me is overkill to travel with. M2 air finally seems like an acceptable option. I sincerely hope, that future machines will go below 1kg, closer to .7, maybe .5 with new thermally conductive polymers. Even M2 air is kinda brick but thats the best out there.
I'm the second example you gave, I want maximum power for minimal size and weight for the amount of travelling I do. I have a 16" MBP (2020) and a 13" MBP (2018), I've always wanted an Air but it never had enough power, now it seems these new ones are a game changer. Going to spec up a M2 Air! Thanks for confirming my thoughts in this vid!
For the past 3 months I've been saving up for a spec'd out 16" MBP w/ the highest M1 Pro. The Max isn't much more when you're in this price range but I'd rather trade in more power for more power, battery power that is. I'm not gonna utilize the extra GPU cores, heck I'd be fine with an entry level M1 Pro but I want a little more wiggle room for a relatively small amount extra. I'm also just gonna get 4TB which will be plenty. I could settle for 2TB but again I want a little wiggle room. I haven't been excited for an Apple product like this since the iPhone X and the 27" 5K iMac.
I got the 16GB, 1TB MacBook Air M2. Didn’t get hot while running Xcode. Although I have it on a laptop cooler. Very convenient for traveling, lodging around. If I had to buy the M1 Pro MacBook Pro with a 1TB SSD, it would have cost a lot more. P.S.: Almost all apps currently do not take advantage of the hardware provided.
The 1TB 14” Pro is $2099 at bestbuy currently. $1599 for the 512GB version. Personally, I went for the base M2 Air at $1049 on sale but it was a tough decision since 16GB RAM helps with future proofing.
Because of the display and the speakers, I just can’t buy the m2 air. I wanted to buy it, but I just can’t stand that grey blacks anymore, and the speakers on the m1 pro are just otherworldly good. That’s the reason I went with the pro, even if I will never ever use the power it provides, since I don’t edit videos, photos or anything else. It’s just my media consumption and browsing machine.
Am in a dilemma ! 13" Macbook Air M2 8 gb ram / 512 gb ssd - 1046 usd 14" Macbook pro 16 gb ram / 1 tb ssd - 1283 usd Both of these models are available new, which one to pick up ? Requirements: 1. Need the laptop to last me atleast 5 more years 2. Am not a power user, i expect good battery life in my machine. I like thin portable laptops 3. However, I am a photography hobbyist. I would like to learn photo, video editing, coding etc. But, still in a very minimal level. 4. Honestly, I dont need a pro model, still the deal looks crazy. 5. Dont recommend something else out of these options and also, I dont like buying refurbished products. Note: need 512gb ssd minimum. Max budget: 1300 usd
I have a 14 inch max and I just travelled all over Europe and back in India now. It was not bad, I was able to work conveniently. But every gram of weight on my back matters when I am travelling and I am going to get an M2 Air just for travelling while using the M1 Max at home.
The MBP cost way more than the MBA. There's no comparison to make, if you have the money to spend and you are willing to do so, go for a pro. But an upgraded MBA will cost around the same as a base MBP.
I went the opposite way. I got an ipad pro M1 11''. Fits my needs as a home inspector. I thought a laptop would be more fitting, and I really did have my eye on one, but maybe next time. Great vid!
You forgot the third option, which is to get a used/refurbished M1 Air. It performs better than a base model M2 Air and costs up to $1000 less, depending on the spec. If you're a casual/typical user, than it's really the best and lowest cost option, with a great combination of performance, weight, size and price. If you're going to buy an M2 Air, than you really need to get a 512 Mb SSD, and 16 Gb of RAM is preferable. But now you're basically in MBP territory on price and buying the 14" MBP makes a lot more sense for the screen, sound, ports and performance improvements. So I really don't see a good case for getting any M2 Air.
It's not as simple as get the MBP because of the price is similar. Priority in a laptop is user experience and portability. If you could have the MBA form factor with MBP performance you would go for it. Some people might prioritize the convenience of the MBA but spend the extra money to upgrade it. Still is gonna be an extremely fast machine but thin and light. So, when you spec a MBA to a similar price to the MBP it doesn't mean that you should go for the MBP. It depends on what everyone considers as a priority. And remember, M2 is newer than M1 (M1 pro, etc) it has a higher clock speed and single core performance. Single core performance is the most usual property of a computer to feel snappy and fast, for example opening up apps. Also, it makes the browsing experience faster as well. Yes, M2 MBA is "faster" in web browsing than M1 MBP. Things that in 3-4 years time the MBP would be kind of outdated compared to the M2 MBA. Yes it's faster rendering, exporting, compiling, but point is, it doesn't mean that you should go for it because of the price. Choose your preferred form factor and spec it as you like. If you can get away with the thinner lighter machine, do it.
I’m not gonna lie..there’s a lot of videos out there telling you not to get the m2 air…so thank you for making an actual reasonable comparison for average users…I am a student..and I will definitely be getting the m2 air…it’s going to be my first MacBook..
I bought an M1 14” pro last year mostly for the SD card slot, I can’t believe that every model doesn’t at least have a micro sd slot. I wish there were better color options than bland and more bland. The blue looks nice, but how’s about a neon green!
for me its only worth the m2 air base model.....for its main use for light users and portability.......if you need to upgrade you are not a light user so go for m1 pro instead because the cost efective of the m2 air is gone if you upgrade it
Recent sales put the prices between the base model m2 and m1 pro 14 at $350. I picked up the MBP14 along with better battery, double the RAM, double the storage, much better speakers, more ports and a much better screen.
I tested both for Building Applications and the pro was my way to go - the air is amazing but for working the pro was just better… from a Price perspective it also didnt make to much of a difference.. since id upgrade the air to 512gb and 16gb RAM anyway..
Hey I have a question, I’m a law student so in fact the air would be the best choice but what makes me worried is that it is passively refrigerated but I also code some things and I had found an MBP M1 PRO M1 Pro 16 gb 512gb refurbished by Apple for $1358 worth it?. What would be your question?
I was using the M1 Pro. I got my daughter the M2 Air but gave her my pro because I liked the bigger screen. After using both, you hit it on the head. I may have to negotiate a computer swap lol
Some of the points I made my decision on was the M2 Air speakers aren't the best even compared to the M1 Air. The M2 in general does get warmer than the M1 Air I upgraded from on some of the basic tasks. I chose the MacBook Pro M1 base model because my previous Air was the same and performance was better for some programs. But the cost of the M2 Air here in Canada to the M1 Pro with student pricing and 210 Apple gift card was just under 300 dollars? This was a no brainer for performance and I think resale as I tend to upgrade every 3 years or so. The only issue I see is the battery life which is about 10 to 12 hours but always gets me thru a work day. the Air would too though. the display and speakers more than make up the 300 dollar price difference for sure.
@@habibkocabas4972 I bought the 14 inch MacBook Pro as mentioned pricing is very close at 16gb of memory and 512gb of storage of both computers. The performance is fast and size and weight isn’t a issue again not much a difference there. I found the speakers on the new M2 Air were a step back to the M1 Air as well. The ports are welcomed as well in the pro.
After all is said and done - I had to make a decision if I wanted a machine that’s half a pound lighter, or a machine that has XDR and promotion … I ordered the MBP
Best Buy just made this a letdown decision - for Labor Day weekend the base M1 Pro MacBook Pro 14 (16gb/512gb) is $1599 while the M2 MacBook Air with 16gb/512gb is $1699. Unless you just have to have the thinner chassis, no fans, and save a 1/2lb of weight, the MacBook Pro 14 is a huge win.
Good overview as always. One factor that strongly pushed me to the M2 was the absence of fans. I am so tired of the fans always spinning up on my 2020 MBP. I’m a businessman and use web, emails and office apps. Not much creative stuff at all. The M2 MBA is smoking fast and even runs office on windows through Parallels without any hiccups. Something my 2020 MBP Intel chip couldn’t do. Now I don’t open up huge Excel files, but again, it’s plenty fast. Since I travel a lot, the lower weight and slimmer form factor is key as well. We have reached an age of computing where people don’t need to always get the most processing power. The M2 is plenty for the average person, it’s not just for students.
I should make one clarification on my Parallels/Windows comment. I did spring for 16GB of memory. I was worried about too much memory swap while running windows. With 16GB, my memory pressure is never high/red. I’d be curious to see a comparison of the M2 8 and 16 on that issue. I’d also like to see a review of how often the fans run when doing normal stuff and how loud they are. My expectation is that the MBP fans are not as noisy as the Intel models, but are they still generally noisy in normal use or just when rendering (which a lot of people who buy Macs don’t do).
Do you use Excel much? I love my MBA M2, but I’m wondering if it’s good for work office excel intensive applications, heavy pivot table use, files with 1M+ rows. I use an aged PC laptop at work, but was thinking of replacing my work PC with the M2 air.
If I ask, I’m curious why you decided to run office through parallels on windows, rather than buying office for Mac. I guess to me buying parallels was quite expensive, and you could’ve gotten the office for Mac versions for a similar price, or I could be wrong on that since I haven’t looked at the pricing structure in quite a while.
to further complicate the M2 Air vs MBP14 pricing. You can easily find the MBP14 in the $1750 price range, which massively closes that price difference between the MBP14 and the M2 MBA. I think the M2 MBA is an amazing device, its just priced too high. If you need a basic device, just get the M1 MBA which can be found at $850 easily enough. At $400 cheaper getting the M1 MBA is a no brainer. If you need a more powerful device just find the MBP14 at $1750. This is all unless you are a super specific buyer where a half a pound means something in terms of portability at which the M2 Air would be the choice.
I currently use the base model M1 Mac Mini for all my photo editing, office needs, and school work. It handles everything no problem whatsoever. I thought about the iPad 11" or 12.9", but the problem was there is no Libre Office for it (I'm cheap, I come from Linux lol), and buying a keyboard for it to work like a laptop put me over the price of a Macbook Air.
I also come from Linux and Windows and I've always been using LibreOffice because I like open source, cross platform software more when I can use it, and despite LibreOffice not having an official mobile app they endorse Collabora Office which should be 99% compatible with everything made in LibreOffice! It's available on Android and iOS so you might want to check that out :)
A pro has more USB-C ports and more throughput. A Pro also supports more external monitors, my MB Air supports mirroring to an external monitor only… I can’t use both for two screens at once.
I was conflicted about this same problem too. As a Windows user looking to buy my first MacBook, I think the M2 air is probably fine for 99% of workloads. From everything I've seen online, as long as your not compiling heavy code or doing intense 3D design there's not much use to upgrading to the M1 14" Pro. As a PhD student, I'm looking for a laptop that can handle MS office workloads, browsing, and some statistics software...which the M2 air should handle fine. I occasionally do light photo or 4k video editing but nothing at a "pro" level. Plus with the $500 dollars, I saved from the air purchase (16GB, 512ssd) compared to the 14" pro I intend on using it to buy a good wide productivity monitor. Lastly, 120 Hz really isn't all that important unless you are a gamer for which you should probably look for a windows gaming laptop.
I should add that the $500 difference is in CAD. Plus the Apple education discount was too good to not take advantage of. Excited to try MacOS for the first time, I spent hours looking for a new laptop, and found Intel or AMD can't come close to the efficiency of these new Mac machines!
The baseline M2 Macbook Air is perfect for my media consumption (youtube, streaming services), email, web surfing, and the occasional iMovie video editing for my iPhone video files. I love the slim and lightweight design for the portability when traveling and taking it to work. Great video. sub'd!
So, right now for those worried about money or debating a M2 air or 14 M1 Pro, get the MacBook Pro 14. It’s 1,599$ at Bestbuy. I just snagged one and with the specs and the much better screen I won’t be looking back at my returned M2 Air with 512gb upgrade. This blows the M2 air out of the water and is worth it. I suspect Apple is going to be releasing a new M2 MacBook 14/16 soon but for this price point, it’s the perfect time to grab one. The speakers, amazing screen, 16gb of fast RAM and 512gb hard drive make it a no-brainer!
Great comparison. I’d also add that the Mini LED screen is a hit and miss and very dependent on your preferences. While it obviously has darker blacks (all black), it also has blooming and unevenly lit edges. Plus lag when scrolling, with very slow blooming effects especially with white on black backgrounds. So the Pro Motion won’t help you when the LED backlights are so slow in themselves. Plus it has some PWM screen flicker, while the M2 is flicker free. All that means it’s a no go for me.
FWIW I notice no blooming or uneven edges or flicker on the M1 Pro and I do appreciate seeing and editing HDR content from the iPhone (BT.2020 / Rec.2100 HLG) in its full brightness.
@@NormanBaatz It’s been tested and there are lots of videos on this on UA-cam. Glad you’re not noticing it, but those who do notice it find it very irritating (and in terms of PWM, very headache and eye strain inducing to the point of being unusable). It’s just to how LED screen works, there’s not getting away from it. An LED can only be on or off, so quick flicker is the only way to darken or lighten a screen. Not to be confused with refresh rate, which is something different (that’s about how often the pixels refresh). And LED backlights by definition create blooming as there are not as many backlights as there are pixels on the screen. So you will get blooming when one LED lights up many pixels, not just the one it’s supposed to. You can clearly see it if you scroll and have white on black background. See the videos.
@@pressrepeat2000 Well, I’m glad I went with the “in real life you won’t notice any of this” camp, because now I have the best screen I have ever had on a laptop with no complaints, and enjoy it for a variety of productive uses, including many where there is bright text on black background 😊
if it’s anything like the panel in my 12.9 ipad pro with mini led. while I can definitely see blooming in some edge cases. but for most content im looking at it isnt an issue.
I guess the game is easy but people are making it hard! thank you for the great video! In reality it is simple, you just need to know what laptop you need. If you want an air, expecting a pro performance, you are simply doing a mistake! The air is targeting specific people, it is not made for editing (even though it can do it easily), it is not made for gaming, it is made for a normal user! I am a researcher, i have been using the 2020 intel Macbook air for 2 years and never had an issue. Overheating, fan noise, nosing! Because simply i use my laptop for what it is intended to be used for! I am upgrading for the M2 in the next few days and i am pretty sure that it will be perfect for my work! I blame apple a bit for putting such a strong chip in such a tiny device! This led people to use the computer in a wrong way!
I just realized that new Air M2 looks amlost exactly like Surface Laptop. Weird, considering that I used the Surface for more that a year and realized it only now.
I want the Air but it has no fan. Probably gonna use this for possible coding classes as well as school but I'm just so fearful of the fact that it is fanless If the pro is light enough I'd be willing to buy that one though
I've had my M1 Pro Macbook for half a year now and even though I've been using it for coding classes and some light gaming on the side, I've never had the fans turn on, the efficiency of these M-series MacBooks is so absurd that I believe you don't have to worry about the Air being fanless at all, since it has an even better airflow. Unless you're planning on constantly editing and processing 8K video on it, the Air will just take anything you throw at it without heat or noise
@@kiwi.kiwi. I am a web developer and honestly, I have no issues with my M1 Air. It’s stupidly fast and I never felt it got hot in my months of usage. My recommendation is to see what you are going to do with it. My Air is mainly for on-the-go coding and everything else is done at home on my Linux desktop. Honestly even compiling code won’t be an issue. Might be slower on the Air but it’s not a huge deal. Personally, I would get a 16GB Air.
$2,301.46 for a refurbish M2, 24GB, 1TB MBA with AppleCare+ and CA Tax. Only thing that would be nice is better thunderbolt, more ports, and dual desktop display. I'm happy with what it is, and traveling so much makes the slimmer profile worthwhile. I travel more often than needing two desktop screens.
I've had my first mac pro in 2017 and I loved it a lot. I saw M2 Air but after seeing few of my fave creators about it, I decided to wait until M2 Pro (hopefully coming mid Sept/early Oct) to see if it'll blow my mind. If it doesn't, I'll go with M1 Pro.
This is also where I'm stuck - currently using an Intel 2019 MBP and really waiting to see if we're about to get a new line of 14" and/or 16" MBPs w/M2 in them. Otherwise it definitely seems like the stronger variants of the M1 are a decent choice for a while.
I was also hoping for new M2 Pro’s beeing shown in October. But then I saw no indication of that anywhere and when talking to sales people in stores, they all thought new Pro’s won’t come until 2023. So I ordered a maxed out Air M2. Have you seen any indications of new Pro’s coming in 2022??
I absolutely care about size and weight (traveling). But I also care about the XDR screen of the M1 pro. I’m stuck. I would even pay the same or slightly MORE money on a Air, if I get the size and weight of an Air but with a XDR mini LED display.
I went with the Macbook Air 512gb/16gb - mainly because I wanted a very light laptop, and after comparing both in the store, the Pro seems huge when compared with the Air. hehe And I wanted better batteries as well.
Leave the pros for the pros. The M2/M1 MacBook Air for some non-professional with an Iphone, college students studying Java for software engineering, and amateur digital arts (Front-end website developers, UX/UI students, college video editors, photographers, sound engineering students, and beginner DJs).
Excellent comparison video Patrick! I prefer the design aspect of the M2 Air. 24GB & 1 TB = a perfect combination for maximum performance and quality. Both are exceptional choices, but it depends on personal taste. Looking forward to getting my Midnight M2 Air in 2 weeks. Keep up the great reviews. Cheers 🍻.
Another great vide Patrick! Really enjoyed your "people need to chill" one :) I went with 8/8/24/512 and as a software developer, coming from 16" i7 I couldn't be happier. The style, weight and midnight color was my main reasons to go with M2. It feels like iPad Pro but its a laptop. Is ridiculously fast. Another bonus is passive cooling and insane battery life.
Anyone have thoughts on longevity between the two? I feel like either would work well for me, I have an old pro (2012) and it is still working, but too old to keep doing updates, safari is a no go ect. I know I can't be alone on looking to have the longer lasting option. I would lean towards the air for weight, but have a feeling the pro would outlast the air. Hubby has an air (basic) about 4 years old and I fell like my dinosaur runs better than his.Thoughts? Thanks!
Well, well, well... here go: After using the MacBook Air 2014, 11'' for all these years, up to now 2022, and I still love it, but is time to up grade, (I do have a 27" desktop) I chose the new Air M2 because of the portability and weight, (I up graded for 16 ram, 1TB storage for better performance to editing photos and videos) I really want to like the M1 14" for exactly the pros Patrick mentioned, but once you have in your hand you will notice the M1 Pro is pretty bulky. I compromise little bit less performance vs portability. If I only have to chose ONE computer, (home use, portability, performance) the M1 14" will be the one.
The problem are the tech tubers keep passing the message, 1599 vs 1799(on sales from amazon), and you will get much more power and extra hardware, and M1 air is also onsales with 850 vs 1199, its way better in cost performance and in this case, you don't care the the extra hardware and focus in performance only. I think they are paid by Apple to help them get rid of the old stock.
This is the first of your videos that I have watched and I would like to compliment you on your calm, measured presenting style. This makes a huge difference and I'm going to subscribe.
Totally agree. A zen tone while talking about cutting edge tech seems impossible and yet, he does it. Plus, I am very interested in his content. Subscribed.
After much consideration, I went for MBA M2 10 core GPU, 8GB RAM, and 512GB storage. Main reason: discount 20% with this configuration. Can't be happier! :D
I got the base Mac book Air, M2 - 8 core - 256gb - Midnight, I wanted something similar to my surface and this exceeds my expectations. I'm still getting used to the OS but being able to edit a video butter smooth is nice. (minor video editing, mainly UA-cam shorts and gaming clips.)
This is the best assessment I have heard. He is right, if you want portability regardless of power and cost the air is the way to go. The MacBook M1 Pro feels big and clunky when compared to the air.
Which one will you recommend to a student and a Human Resources Specialist? For Interviews, Excel, Microsoft and for working on software. And someone who is first time buyer of MacBook!
I wanted to get a mac for my higher studies but couldnt decide which is better. But after watching this video, I have a clear idea to go for the macbook air m2 chip. Its still fast, good battery life, budget, new colors (the midnight one is rly nice, smudges alot sad), bigger display!, and great sounding speakers!!!. My opinion is people who are needing to use a apple laptop then the macbook air is the best option. Thank you for making this video Patrick!
as a hobby muscian and video editor, 256gb just doesn't cut it. I have the m1 Air and have to upgrade to 512gb. Its silly that 256gb is even an option. But buy now or wait for the AGI singularity, thats the question :P
Agreed in your case. The thing is that your computer doesn't care if you edit as a hobby or professionally. If it needs the power, it needs the power. The Air is not built for that type of stuff, even though you might get by to a certain extent.
i plan on getting either the refurbished air m2 than the pro m1 or air m1 as it's only a $80 or $170 difference. air m1 and pro m1 are even dearer at a $90 difference! lol (i apologise if this doesn't make sense) M1 MacBook Air and M1 MacBook Pro: A$1,449.00 - A$1,359.00 = A$90.00 M1 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Air: A$1,529.00 - A$1,359.00 = A$170.00 M1 MacBook Pro and M2 MacBook Air: A$1,529.00 - A$1,449.00 = A$80.00
Awesome video bro, I was watching this on my M2 MacBook Air before I got the MacBook Pro M1 Pro in a 16 inch, man I am so happy I made that exchange. What was an eye opener for me was when my computer scientist friend said "8gb ram should not be considered in 2024 regardless of laptop" which clicked a light switch in my brain lolol. I have to agree with my friend, even my gaming PC has 16gb of ram which is saying something. Loving the display on this laptop as well. If you guys have a Micro-center near by, they are selling the M1 Pro refurbished, highly recommended! good luck y'all!!
Thank you for your review, I did chose the m1 pro 14 inch instead of the m2 air, way better deal for the money, and even more since I traded my ipad pro that I never used. So in the end I had to pay like 1500 for something way better than the m2 air
@@PatrickRambles Yeah, I needed something powerful enough to replace my desktop pc when I'm on the go or traveling, and the m1 macbook pro does perfectly. Thanks again
@@PatrickRambles I prefer mac, however, since I need full power and compatibility for unreal engine 5 for filmmaking and animation, that's why I had to buy a powerful desktop pc, but I really prefer way more mac than windows, but the m1 pro it still can run unreal engine 5, so it still usable in some extent, and if I were to need more power on the go, I could also simply connect to my desktop pc with a streaming app like splashtop. 👍
🔥Hey guys! For those of you asking about the leather sleeve, you can find it here geni.us/H9z0 🔥
Hello Patrick :)
15 years I use only .Win :)
.. and I don't know how I will get along with this operating system in macbook. but I decided to purchase.
am also wondering which laptop to buy.
8 GB of RAM is very little and it is good that it is at least 16 GB (for browsing in Chrome)
Can I get how things stand with you and your opinion if you have practice while working.
I watched the video and more videos, but I still can't figure out about multitasking - browsing which model would be better
I like air because it's light. and the display is slightly larger
congratulations: George
I agree with your recommendation. I was looking at the M2 Air and started upgrading it and the cost was getting crazy. So I went with the M1 Pro 14 and I am so happy I did! Got more computer for the money I would have spent with the M2 Air.
You won’t regret it.
Indeed, i just wanted 16 ram and 512 ssd, but there was a 400 usd discount on some MacBook Pro m1 14” in best buy, so i went for it better
I can’t decide. Want to run Cubasis 3 and edit record my synths.
Thanks for sharing, Phillip!
Which color did you go for the Air?
I got the midnight color and I love it!
People really underestimate the difference in form factors. The 14 pro looks and feels almost as chunky as my 2009 13 pro with an optical drive. Great for a true pro machine but there’s no benefit for a moderate user like me.
@Harry Donovan You do not need a $1000+ machine to run the biggest of excel data lmao
A UA-cam rarity - straight to the point, no fluff, 100% fat-free video. Nice job.
Thanks, Don!
By now there is a sea of UA-cam videos about MacBooks and comparisons. The way you condensed the information and framed it makes this video truly stand out from the rest. At the end of the day most people are watching these videos to make a decision and you really hit the nail on the head. Great work.
Thank you, I appreciate that!
Was going to get an M2 Air with 16/512 as a CS student but with Black Friday I got a brand new 14” Pro for $1599. Cant be happier as it cost less than the same spec’d air.
MacBook Air M2 was a no brainer for me. I absolutely wanted the thinnest and lightest for my travel backpack. The weight difference IS noticeable.
I went back and forth on this a lot. I ended up doing the unthinkable - M2 air with 24g RAM with 256 SSD. With Cloud, I haven't needed to store a ton of files, I usually use a handful of applications, and am a programmer who needs the boosted RAM. Maybe I made the wrong choice, but really loved the idea of M2 air being sleek + light
as a fellow programmer, just did the same thing yesterday. We'll see how compile times go....
Hey, how did it go?
No issues for me
I have not experienced any issues, a lot of my apps + code have been using 20-23gb RAM no problem
ive been using mine for a little over 5 months and no regrets so far!
I went for the M2 MacBook Air with 10-core GPU, 16GB and 512GB SSD. Works great for me! Also loved how light the M2 Air is which is perfect for me to travel with!
Awesome!
I got the exact same configuration and have not had a single issue at all. I have noticed it gets quite warm/hot but never noticed anything else or had any other issues
@@adrianstuart84 Same here! But it hasn't gotten as hot as my MacBook Pro from 2018. And the battery life is AWESOME!
May i ask why u chose the 10 core GPU over the 8core? I’m split between the two cus I heard the 10 core GPU isn’t a huge plus
@@rachelding5682 better performance for high demanding software or occasional gaming
Damn... why did they have to make the air so pretty 😭 I absolutely love that midnight shade.
Edit: they even have the 1TB MBP for $2099
Your the real MVP. Thanks for that Best Buy tip.
Want to buy macbook, for video editing . which machine should i buy in 1000-1200$ budget
I love the M2 MacBook Air design and how sleek it looks, but the M1 14 inch pro mini LED is the only thing I would love to have on this MacBook Air
Yes, that's not possible... Or maybe it is. Apple sometimes listens to its users.
Even 4k!

It’s a better computer, no doubt
After my research, this is my conclusion:
- MBA M1 16GB if you have short budget.
- MBA M2 16GB if you really like the new design and can pay extra 300$ for it.
- MBP M1 14" if you really need more performance under 2000$.
If you compare these 3 to the iPad pro (+magic keyboard and pen) , what would be your recommendation for video editing (as only device?)
What about the 13" MBP M1?
This one is back to scissor switches so that should be fixed.
That's because the air doesn't have a fan. A downside in my book.
Etc
At the same price point it's a no brainer. No doubt you're feeling the difference is power 💪

It does have that “don’t need but really want” appeal, doesn’t it.
That's my config, too and I simply love it. Space Grey and the minimalistic clear design of the M1 Pro 14" blows me away.
@@PatrickRambles Yeah, this moment, when there's something you don't need but simply want to have :)
I looked at the pricing. The air with 16 gb and 512 ssd was pretty much the same price as the Pro 14 base. Which is also 16gb ram 512 ssd. But the screen was much better with the pro and the pro doesn’t down-clock and thermal throttle.
Yep. It's awfully close and you must really have a strong preference for the design of the M2 to choose that over the M1.
@@PatrickRamblesOr want the weight reduction. For some that makes a world of difference.
That makes sense.
Nice! It can be your media consumption machine for a very long time though.
Am in a dilemma !
13" Macbook Air M2 8 gb ram / 512 gb ssd - 1046 usd
14" Macbook pro 16 gb ram / 1 tb ssd - 1283 usd
Both of these models are available new, which one to pick up ?
Requirements:
1. Need the laptop to last me atleast 5 more years
2. Am not a power user, i expect good battery life in my machine. I like thin portable laptops
Great vid!
Thanks! Lots of iPad love on this channel :)
Did you actually watch the entire video?
@@PatrickRambles Yes, start to finish.
I’m not gonna lie..there’s a lot of videos out there telling you not to get the m2 air…so thank you for making an actual reasonable comparison for average users…I am a student..and I will definitely be getting the m2 air…it’s going to be my first MacBook..
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do 🙌
🔥🔥🔥Hey guys, my custom wallpaper pack finally dropped 🥳🥳🥳 patrickrambles.gumroad.com/l/hkwta
I bought an M1 14” pro last year mostly for the SD card slot, I can’t believe that every model doesn’t at least have a micro sd slot. I wish there were better color options than bland and more bland. The blue looks nice, but how’s about a neon green!
for me its only worth the m2 air base model.....for its main use for light users and portability.......if you need to upgrade you are not a light user so go for m1 pro instead because the cost efective of the m2 air is gone if you upgrade it
Maybe I need more space and wanna keep
A lightweight computer
Recent sales put the prices between the base model m2 and m1 pro 14 at $350. I picked up the MBP14 along with better battery, double the RAM, double the storage, much better speakers, more ports and a much better screen.
100% would have been my choice.
I tested both for Building Applications and the pro was my way to go - the air is amazing but for working the pro was just better… from a Price perspective it also didnt make to much of a difference.. since id upgrade the air to 512gb and 16gb RAM anyway..
Yep. Pro fo pro use is a good rule of thumb.
Which one did you buy?
Which one did you buy?
@@habibkocabas4972 I bought the 14 inch MacBook Pro as mentioned pricing is very close at 16gb of memory and 512gb of storage of both computers. The performance is fast and size and weight isn’t a issue again not much a difference there. I found the speakers on the new M2 Air were a step back to the M1 Air as well. The ports are welcomed as well in the pro.
After all is said and done - I had to make a decision if I wanted a machine that’s half a pound lighter, or a machine that has XDR and promotion … I ordered the MBP
EXACTLY the comparison i was hoping to find! you seem to have an excellent pulse on the consumer. brilliantly produced as well! thank you!
Thanks a lot!
Agreed.
They are not nearly as noisy, thank God. My 16” intel used to drive me crazy. Like a rocket ship every time I opened a chrome tab 😂
MSOffice is available for macOS.
to further complicate the M2 Air vs MBP14 pricing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Anthony.
I like that the Air has the m2 but I don't like working on a piece of paper of a laptop. I need at least some type of thickness to my laptop.

@@pressrepeat2000 I frankly hate UA-cam HDR videos. Too damn bright even with low brightness set.
The fact that the m2 air has such a similar screen to my 2015 12” MacBook makes it hard to even consider updating to it.
But the internals are night and day.
Both laptops are incredible powerful but Portability is everything for me so the air is best for my personal preference.
Thanks for the comparison, I've been struggling with the same decisions.
Thanks for watching, Bryan!
I just realized that new Air M2 looks amlost exactly like Surface Laptop. Weird, considering that I used the Surface for more that a year and realized it only now.
I want the Air but it has no fan. Probably gonna use this for possible coding classes as well as school but I'm just so fearful of the fact that it is fanless
If the pro is light enough I'd be willing to buy that one though
I've had my M1 Pro Macbook for half a year now and even though I've been using it for coding classes and some light gaming on the side, I've never had the fans turn on, the efficiency of these M-series MacBooks is so absurd that I believe you don't have to worry about the Air being fanless at all, since it has an even better airflow. Unless you're planning on constantly editing and processing 8K video on it, the Air will just take anything you throw at it without heat or noise
@@ilyasz4473 so the air series are meant for everyday users instead of power users?
*even though it has no fan?
@@TheBonesShow you should’ve waited lol
I absolutely care about size and weight (traveling). But I also care about the XDR screen of the M1 pro. I’m stuck. I would even pay the same or slightly MORE money on a Air, if I get the size and weight of an Air but with a XDR mini LED display.
I went with the Macbook Air 512gb/16gb - mainly because I wanted a very light laptop, and after comparing both in the store, the Pro seems huge when compared with the Air. hehe
And I wanted better batteries as well.
I totally get the portability and design thing. Battery life is about the same irl

Solid argument for desicion making. I need a lot of RAM and storage so that´s the deal breaker.
Thanks!
I'm in the same situation as you, i have a pro (2012) and I'm torn on which to get now. With the new chips I think the airs can last longer?

This is the best assessment I have heard. He is right, if you want portability regardless of power and cost the air is the way to go. The MacBook M1 Pro feels big and clunky when compared to the air.
I bought an M2 Macbook Air, I think I need to return it because I need to use Parallels.
I have a cracked M1 Pro and was deciding on to repair it or jus suck it up and Get a M2 air, this definitely cleared it up

Agreed in your case. The thing is that your computer doesn't care if you edit as a hobby or professionally. If it needs the power, it needs the power. The Air is not built for that type of stuff, even though you might get by to a certain extent.

A friend of mine just got an M2 air after watching this video. I myself, will be getting a M1 Pro. Excellent comparisons, very handy advice!
Thanks!
