Great info, but it raises some questions: How many hours on average, to edit a typical video? (Can't estimate what an editor will cost without knowing that). What is the elapsed calendar time (not edit time) to turnaround a video from start to finish? Do you send all files and receive all files back, or are you using a proxy workflow? If plugins are needed, does the editor have to own them? If you use broll libraries for music or stock footage, how is that coordinated?
Would you consider testing more than one editor by hiring them to do the same exact project and compare the results? Wondering if that might be more cost effective than trying one editor and then another if the results are acceptable?

I would love to hire an editor, but I feel like from my Astro photography channel if I’m doing a product review that I mention specific cameras, or telescopes and accessories, etc while I’m editing, I’ll just go online and find photos or dig through images. I’ve taken myself, and I kind of do it all on the fly.
I don’t know how somebody who isn’t an expert in the subject to be able to do that.
And if I had to go in and pick out all the photos and tell them exactly where they should go, that would take more work than just doing it myself

Sarah Dietschy has a great video about this topic. She says that there is an adjustment time between both. As a video editor myself, most of my clients benefit from my experience in setting up a workflow and I learn their style through the review process. You could give it a try, you could always go back if doesn't fit you.

As an editor I know it does help if a client has a good structural idea of what they want to achieve before they start, and also what they are prepared to spend as a budget. How long is a “typical” video edit is like asking “how long is a piece of string” - it can take half a day or two weeks depending on what is required.

Ever since update to the new version of Davinci Resolve 18.5.6 has anyone else notice problems with removal of green screens ? it is removing everything ( or adding everything ).
It is unable to tell the differences between the typical green screen with good lighting, and white and mat white finish tables, brown masking tape, duct tape, and a variety of other objects which are not remotely looking green ( even large items ), not the same light as the green screen, and on a table far away from the green screen.
Or even large items infront of the green screen that are not remotely green.
What are the different / new techniques needed in order to remove a green screen these days ?
Also how to remove the green tinge from around objects.
Free version - not studio version of Davinci Resolve 18.5.6.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

I am not convinced. I don't want to give someone I don't know my money for something I can learn myself, even if they might do it better. As a matter of fact, many successful channels don't even edit their videos. I am talking channels with over 1 million subscribers. Since I am a small channel, I don't need to hire people to do my work for me. Only after I am a huge channel seems more realistic.

    • @chrisgraythereal
      @chrisgraythereal 5 місяців тому

It depends what your time is worth to you and how fast you work. And how much value is added by the edit.
If your USP is knowledge of X, that's where the value lies. Is it not smarter to use your time to write the next script while someone else does the "donkey work"?
If you can earn more money flipping burgers in a fast food store than you pay your video editor, then you make a profit by outsourcing that work.
If the whole point of your videos is slick editing and cool presentation, and X is only incidental, then you're probably better off doing your own editing. That's where the value is created, so that's what you should focus on.
A lot of my favourite youtubers have great content and brilliant cinematography and editing. They create all the value themselves, but it takes several days to edit one video. Is it worth it?
It takes just as long to edit a video whether you only have one subscriber or one million. Spending that time doing editing means not spending that time building your brand, writing better scripts, or filming great content. You have to do your own calculation, but there are only so many hours in a day and building a business takes a lot of skills and all your hours.
Do you build your own computer, write your own operating system and editing app? Do you grow your own coffee, educate your own children, do your own dentistry? I don't. I outsource to specialists so I can focus on doing the things that create the maximum value for myself.

It depends really on what can you afford and set your expectation around it. I usually charge depending of the complexity of the project and how often are we gonna work. Final pricing comes after a test project to se what kind of situation I have at hands. There are some "fees" that many people don't take in consideration when hiring an editor, like electric bill, storage services, internet services, some sort of "retirement plan" (401k im US and similars) the rental for the gear (eventually you need a new mac/pc), software licences, stock footage and music subscriptions.... At the end of the day is not rocket science, if you're not making crazy editing, transitions and VFX, just look to a decent wage and you have a reference point. You may find some rando kid just looking to make a quick buck and go for cheap labour, but in the end one day it will either move on or realize he/she cant make a living charging that and you'll end in the same spot again. IMO lol
