How to hire a video editor for your youtube channel (+ how much an editor will cost you)

- One of the first hires I ever made was a video editor to help me out with my channel. I'm SO glad I did this, because it's saved me tons of time, helped me to grow my channel a lot faster, and meant that I was still able to have a LIFE outside of UA-cam.
(That's one of the "dark secrets" of being a UA-camr... even though it's an amazing and creative job, it can take ALL your time.)
So, today, I want to share with you what I've learned over the past couple years of working with a video editor -- including how to FIND an editor, how much a video editor should COST, and how to work with them effectively... so you actually get the results you're looking for.
Do you make UA-cam videos? Have you ever considered hiring an editor? Why or why not?

Nice video
You are always so thorough in your details, making sure to give us the absolute best of what you can share with us. Please know how much we appreciate that. I have also used Upwork in the past (when we still called it Elance) and I agree that is a great place to find some amazing video editors, as well as other team members to help you grow your UA-cam channel or online business, like logo designers, ebook writers, etc. And like you share in your video, it's so important to build that connection with your editor, to the point that if they no longer wish to edit videos any longer, they'll have a great referral ready to take on your projects because they won't want to just leave you hanging. Thank-you for introducing your own editors with us, what an awesome team! Great video Gillian! I highly recommend subscribing to your channel. I've been a loyal fan for over two years now, you always go the extra mile. A great role model for sure!

The fact you script tour videos beforehand makes a huge difference in how much editing needs to be done and the overall quality too
This video really fills a need that I have been having for quite some time. Thank you Gillian for taking the time to really give us a quality video. Your interview was fantastic. And I really learned from your demonstration (using your own computer) was good. I truly can tell that you put a lot of thought into each of your videos. That is a great example for me. I would love to see an example of your UA-cam outline. A future video suggestion for me would showing us step by step how you outline your own UA-cam videos. God bless you!
Awesome! I'm glad you found it helpful and enjoyable! 🥰
Thank you for sharing this I have been testing out an editor and have been wondering about a lot of the questions you're talking about so happy to see this and as always great job on explaining this Gillian!!!

Hi Gillian, I thought you gave a lot of good and valuable information in this "How to hire a video editor for your YT channel' video. In particular the last few minutes of the video where you showed us how you document the communication with the editor was really helpful!
I always love your helpful tips! :-)
Hope to get better at this, too. More power!

This video is so clear, I love it. Need to implement this on my UA-cam channel
Thanks for the great info as always Gillian!
So glad I found your video. Outstanding! Looking for an editor now, and appreciate the insight and tips.
Thanks for all the useful information Gillian!
This is a great video especially the "tips" at the last part.
I am a photo and video editor. I worked (and still working) on different types of videos from music, interviews, short film, events, weddings, etc... I can tell with certainty that "communication" before starting any project saves a lot of time and targetless revisions... To have a clear understanding of what the final video output is for (Who your video is for and message), availability, turnaround time, service costs are just some of the topics to discuss before having an agreement... To all clients and editors reading this message - may you have a good, friendly, fruitful and professional relationship always. God bless you and your works!
Appreciate the tips!! And the hire details are really helpful. Thanks!!

I'm a video editor for more than 10 years, and I've had a lot of clients who don't give enough details on how they want me to edit their videos. What he said about damaging the relationship when having too much revisions is true. They give you raw videos. Doesn't give you enough details. You edit it and then they want some revisions. It's crazy.
Hey I'm interested in hiring you as a video editor. Let me know if you are interested.
This happened to me recently. I asked for a rough draft, layout so I can have an idea of what the person wanted. Wouldn't give me anything so I just guessed. Then they had to nerve to say they're concerned about paying for "simple edits " 🙄

I have been editing for 4 years now and this is the best video that has been recommended to me. I’ve worked for channels with 2m and 11m subscribers and they follow all the steps that you mentioned. Also, more successful the UA-camr is, more humble they are. I will share this video with my clients who need some insights. Thanks !
I have a question how do you find a client other than upwork or freelance website because Im trying to find clients and its really hard
@@MiksZY Upwork and fiverr are really tricky to figure out. You need to do a bit of experimenting there and build your portfolio. Secondly, apply to agencies near you. Keep on adding it to your portfolio and eventually, you will get consistent clients from both sides and you can ask any of them to hire you directly. It took me one full year just to create a consistent flow and it’s not a one time job actually, I have to be ON it all the time
@@MiksZY I can be your client lol I have a dragon ball voice acting channel with over 3k if you’re interested
really insightful video--my advice as an editor is for those seeking editors, be as detailed as possible with briefs for videos. The more detailed and well planned out a video is, the easier the edit will be. Try and refrain from filming, and then thinking about what you want it to look like after. No one likes loads of revisions, communication is key. As well as this, try and remember editors are creative people! When you hand over a video to edit, it will not come out exactly the same as if you yourself were to edit it, just like any art!
How much do you charge to edit videos?
depending on the project day rates could be $160 +@@allaboutkarrissaqueen2877

Thumbs up thanks for this video. Very well thought out and informative.
as an editor, I second that communication is key. If you leave the editor to their own means they are gonna give you back something that's good for them, but might not meet YOUR expectations... I try to be very realistic with what I can offer and deliver, but clients gotta meet me halfway! great video.

What do you think about an editor factoring in the success and amount the UA-camr is making into their pay ask?
For example: editing for a UA-camr that gets 1 million+ views per video on average, but makes about 1 video a week, 4-6 videos a month.
Another ex: If someone edits a video that goes on to get 4 million views, which means that video made them 10s of thousands, but the editor was only paid $250 to edit it.
Is it not supposed to matter because the editors job is "done"? Isn't the editor at a loss when factoring in the success of the video that is largely their work as well? In a way, yhe UA-camr would continue profiting off of something that was a collaborative effort while the other half, the editor, in theory, got shorted.
Would love your feedback on how to deal with something like this and specifically how you think the editor should be paid under these circumstances.
I think this is a very interesting problem, but I think it's dependent on the situation:
I think in the first example it depends on what you, the editor, are chasing. Are you going after the "work" or after the "clout"? In the first scenario, depending on the rapport and skill level, I think it's more than fair to ask for more because of the risk to your reputation if the video isn't to a specific quality. But if you are chasing clout and referrals to land a big gig with Mr.Beast for instance than asking for less despite your skill may be a trade off to land that big UA-camr as a client.
I think the second scenario is based on whether or not you are a "Partner" in the business of that UA-camr. Are you taking on the risk of earning nothing if the video doesn't do well, as a business partner that asks for royalties instead of payment you could try to capture that. But chances are, you won't get paid a rate AND a royalty in case that video becomes viral. If you go in to that agreement going after only your $50+ hourly rate, then it's a job done as soon as the video is out of your studio. Getting upset about not basking in the glory, when not taking the risk of utter failure also hardly seems fair from the perspective of the content creator.
But I suppose it's all dependent on the situation, and this is just my personal 2 cents.
Hiiii I hope you see this! How do you and your editors go about sending videos and clips back n forth? (due to the files being so large)
It works fine by email or telegram without any quality reduction.
Nice video, I was thinking of hiring someone as I'm getting to that stage, but honestly the hassle of back and forth with some of these guys is not worth the time in certian cases, better to do self quick edits - having said this greatly depends upon the type of channel and content being produced.
I understand that communication is really important. I've been needing a consistent editing job for a while now. Everyone tells me I'm great at it but most don't seem to have the budget to consistently give me work, so I'm usually just writing and editing my own stories and video essays, in the hopes that it'll go somewhere but I'm far more passionate about the behind-the-scenes of everything I watch so I think this would be ideal for me!

Very very good video.👌💯😮💨
can you make a video on how to make your own podcast?
Is there any special considerations you can think of for gaming youtubers?
For now I will edit my videos myself
10:56 "More (pause), better" or was this just a missed edit? I know you spend a lot of time (or your editor does) on these edits, so I figured I'd call it out for you. Thank you for this video, regardless. I am a disabled veteran, so I have a lot of time on my hands, as well as a good amount of excess income to spend on editors/updating things visually or with sound. When I spend time editing (which I hate doing, usually), sometimes it takes a couple of hours per hour of footage. The last was a 15 minute video that took almost 5 hours due to editing just the audio, so hearing you mention the "pay per minute" method gives me a good idea to look into for the future.
Nope, that was what I meant to say. :) More AND better!
who else prefers editing instead of recording lol
It depends. Normally, up until a couple of days ago, I hated editing. However, I love recording whenever I am playing a game. My last video was only a short video on Blitzball from Final Fantasy X. On top of the game being enjoyable, the editing actually inspired me to ENJOY editing, because it turned out so well (in my opinion). It took around 5 hours to edit the video to my liking (also thanks to the editing software's UA-cam giving some amazing tutorial videos that helped). Overall, I'd say recording is preferred, with editing slowly becoming more enjoyable. Awesome question! Thank you.
HELL YEAH!! Filming is the bane of my existence! Editing is cool. :)

Ahhh, praying for the day I can get to outsourcing part of my content creation work to someone. But then I enjoy every aspect of it, though. What I would've gladly got rid of, is my active outsourcing business. I love what I'm doing, but too much work for me (gettin' older maybe?..). Shifting to IT consultancy now.
I've been making content mostly on youtube but on other video platforms as well for 15 years, and even though I've never been brand-friendly enough to go viral, I'm so tired of going it alone. My mom died two years ago and I decided to spend part of the life insurance trying to find other freelancers to delegate some of the work to so I can concentrate on actually making new content--like a social media manager to make all the promo posts for me, and/or a web developer who can make my website not look so messy and set up an e-commerce site for, and a video editor who can just take the most rambly parts out of my vlogs and cut out excessive umms, that's really it. But I have not been able to figure out WHERE to find any of these people to hire, certainly no one with any experience working on videos. Every freelance hiring site I try, I get bombarded with barely-coherent copypasta posts from people in undeveloped countries with no proof of portfolio, and that's it. Where do you go to find legitimately professional freelancers to hire?!?
I've been needing a consistent editing job for a while now. Everyone tells me I'm great at it but most don't seem to have the budget to consistently give me work, so I'm usually just writing and editing my own stories and video essays, in the hopes that it'll go somewhere but I'm far more passionate about the behind-the-scenes of everything I watch so I think this would be ideal for me!

Is $1 or even $1.1 per minute of raw footage still applicable? I think that is a good rate.
I have all the content for 200+ videos in my head (I am a college professor), but don't want to spend all the time on editing myself. I would just like to keep generated tons of raw footage and just send it over to an editor for $1/minute of raw footage (even $1.20 is ok).
Are you still looking for one? Ill do it for free
