35 years ago i started learning guitar. I was into metal like Slayer, Metallica and so forth. 1 day a friend brought by the El Mocambo video. I saw the title and said "Stevie Ray Vaughan??? you know i hate country" i thought it was country because of the name and the hat SRV was wearing. He said just watch 1 song and we can do something else. Well 1 song turned into me watching the whole thing over and over again. I had no idea the guitar could sound like that. From that day forth i stopped trying to play metal and dove right into the blues and never looked back.
Stevie ray is the best there ever will be but ain't nothing wrong with metal friend. Personally I play metal but I like to play it the way stevie would play it if he were playing it, with the attitude and ridiculous bends and hard picking. And even letting out a little stevie when it's solo time.
odudi same route as me pal, back in -84 all I wanted to learn when I started was Metallica /slayer etc,now I'm just playing the blues,SRV Rory Gallagher and those heavy hitters, gone from a V/SG/LP to just playing an old Japanese strat from -79, couldn't be happier buddy Keep that blues dirty brother
Metallica was the Band that inspired me to play, they still do, but when I discovered Stevie Ray Vaughan when I was 18, two year's into my guitar lessons, I had to learn some of his song's to. As a musician, I take inspiration and influence from anything that's ever driven me to constantly be better. My riffs are old school Thrash Metal, but my Leads, are all Blues Influenced. Stevie made me want to play Bluesy Leads, instead of Shredding Metal Leads. He inspired me to change the dynamics of how Lead Guitar is typically played in Metal today. Naturally it's my own Bluesy Style, but it was inspired by Stevie Ray Vaughan. I'm now 34, and working on my first record, and I couldn't be happier. Later man.
"He had enough cocaine in his system to kill a horse during the show. Me and Chris were watching him like a hawk, we were afraid he'd lose it." Quote from Tommy Shannon regarding this show.
Lucky me while working at CHEZ FM in Ottawa, I got to interview Stevie Ray 3 times and found him to be humble, thoughtful and an easy Interview too. My boss handed me his debut LP one day and said listen to this, he's coming in about an hour. You're going to interview him. While preparing my show, I listened to his debut, and was floored. The later that night, I watched him tear it up onstage at our local club Barrymore's and noticed every guitar player that I knew with their mouths hanging open in awe of this obvious new talent. It was an unforgettable night. as was every other night that I saw him play like a demon...He was taken away much too soon.....
I have to say playing guitar at a very young age of 11 years old . Mind you I am going on 50 in April 2019. Way before UA-cam came along. I was self taught. I was into classic rock way back even then. I loved Hendrix. The guitar god who invented electric blues guitar in my opinion. I was into a lot of different classic rock. hard rock bands back in the days. Like Sabbath and Deep Purple. Stevie came along by accident. I heard him and Double Trouble playing live on Austin City Limits one Saturday night when I was about 16 and I was hooked. I wanted to learn that style of blues. He took Hendrix to a new level. Don't get me wrong. Jimi was Jimi but Stevie took Hendrix to where Jimi didn't l. I don't care for the future of blues music Stevie Ray...... Mr Vaughn. There will be no other and this video proves that.
I luckily got to see him on this tour, and this dvd is like having that experience captured forever. Nothing will replace live music's energy, but this is a treasure!
If I live to be a hundred I'll never understand why he had to go. God must've needed him more than we did. It's the only thing that gives me comfort. Thank you for giving us so much Stevie. I'll love you forever.
i do too but actually the drummer and bassist told in an interview afterwards that stevie had more coke then blood through his vains so they "were watching him like a hawk"
His instrumentals were absolutely mind blowing. Testify, rude mood, Lenny, wham, little wing, stang's swang, in the open, so excited, and my personal favorite Riviera paradise. That song is the last thing I want to hear when I leave this Earth.
Nailed it. He was just getting started too and branching out. Music as a whole HAS NO IDEA HOW SCREWED THEY GOT. WHITNEY LEVEL!!! A sober Stevie was killing it, go back and listen.
