    Diesel is cool, even though it knocks and emits more harmful fumes out of its exhaust. I am not that big of a fan of diesel fuel, but sometimes they are kinda funky and cool as I said above. I cannot stand it, though, as it sticks ridiculously and smelling gasoline is like smelling roses. I personally would not buy a bike with such an engine, but people are different with different tastes. Thumbs up if you liked this one :) Thanks

      VisioRacer Well if you think about the fuel consumption of a petrol bike versus a diesel bike I would say diesel bikes are a hundred times more environmental friendly so there goes your harmful fumes.

      i have no egr or cat on my truck and it does not smell at all, ( btw that trademark scent is from a rich mixture being forced through a catalyst) and only gets sooty above 12K feet of elevation, its a great tried and true cheap and long living power source (as internal combustion goes).
      But as with everything, you have to take off-the-shelf anything the rest of the distance because OEMs will only spend so much mass producing any product to meet a minimum basic requirement of operation as well as guranteed/engineered points of failure (service intervals, so the service department can get revenue).

    I once had a moped on which I put a 70cc. But since the thing had so much compression I started to increase the compression even further and try to see if it could run on diesel. I found that an 80% diesel 20% gasoline mixture worked quite well. The theory being that the gasoline would explode causing the diesel to ignite along with it due to the pressure.

    • @driverjamescopeland
      @driverjamescopeland 7 місяців тому +2

      That's called propagated ignition... and it does work really well. As a matter of fact, a company set a new power density record a few years back with a gas/diesel blended engine... though their blend was a little closer to 10/90 respectively. Diesel has roughly 25% more potential power per gallon, depending on the formulation.
      There have also been 50cc HCCI diesels which have shown outstanding performance, using a combination of hydrogenated diesel and ethanol.

    CORRECTION. The Bullet is literally the oldest production motorcycle in the world made by Royal Enfield. The diesel engine varient was introduce to India by the name of "Taurus". Back in the days people took it upon themselves and started converting old petrol engine Bullets to diesel engine ones as the Clutch, Gearbox and Crank case all had separate sealed housing. People would retrofit used cheap water pump diesel engine that was around 425cc. It usually returned a fuel efficiency of around 80-90Km/L or around 210MPG. Though they gave ridiculously good fuel efficiency compared to petrol they were very unreliable as the engine fitted were often 5-8 years old and very underpowered as it was originally designed to sit in one place and run a water-pump. Later Enfield designed their own Diesel engine which was a lot lighter and smaller compared to the retrofitted ones at 325cc and made about the same power and torque with a close fuel efficiency of around 75Km/L or 176MPG. It was relatively a lot more refined too. The new diesel engine was directly fitted on to the existing petrol Bullet 350's chassis and named Taurus. The MPG figures might seem a bit too good to be true but it truly is as I have used and worked on them myself. Some day I hope to get one and turbocharge it... Someday... 😅

    Visio, one of your best ever motorcycle UA-cams. It is sad to see the bickering in the comments rather than a real discussion. I guess most folks know little of Rudolf Diesel and his new compression ignition engine. Do these commenters even know that when this engine was invented, there was NO SUCH THING AS DIESEL FUEL? The first engines ran on many different fuels including coal dust, kerosene, and even vegetable oil. Truly, there is nothing new under the sun. For me, I would be happy to find two diesel powered bikes. A small single for putting around town and one of those rip-roaring multi cylinder bikes over 400cc to be legal on the NLEX national highway here in the Philippines. All I can say is what a blast climbing the mountains of Baguio riding two up with lots of power in reserve.

    The Neandar has got to be a blast to ride with all that torque. Torque is what snaps you head back when you stomp the skinny pedal. Had a 2005 Mercedes E320 CDI and that car was an absolute blast. Only had 210 or 220 hp but had right around 400 lb*ft of torque it was an absolute joy to drive. I could be doing 65mph behind a semi move into the fast lane and floor it and be doing damn near 100 by the time I passed the driver and on top of that it would cruise at 80mph and get 35-40mpg. The engine and handling of the car was awesome. The wiring and other stuff not so much. Definitely check the wiring under the hood before you buy one as the insulator started crumbling on ours and then right after I fixed all six injectors from the black death crap, thankfully only had to buy one, the damn key sensor crapped out and since that is a Mercedes only fix we sold it. One hell of an engine though. Piss poor design on holding down the injectors hence the black death BS but all that torque is a freaking blast.

    Diesel and gasoline have close to the same specific energy, diesels are more efficient due to the much higher compression ratio which allows the combusted gasses to expand over a higher volume than lower compression gasoline engines, the leaner mixture, and the compression ignition which ignites all the fuel at once, meaning the fuel can do more useful work with the energy generated when burning. The fuel burns more slowly meaning the engines can’t rev very high on regular diesel otherwise the fuel wouldn’t burn completely causing massive torque and efficiency loss at higher rpm, and they are heavier and larger due to the need to withstand much higher internal pressure than any gas engine.

    I like the idea of 600 miles on a tank but Diesel bikes appart from being gutless come with a lot of issues and and when you consider the pros and cons you are better off with a petrol engine unless you are a machanic, just a few examples even new Diesel bikes need nuts and bolts checking every service as the heavy vibration of diesel engines loosens things, the frame must be strong and heavy if not it will need rewelded at some point in the future, if it is a cold day it may take some starting even with a kick, they have a uniqu sound akin to a farmers tractor that could be a pro as you will certainly be noticed😂 i wont say filters carb or injector issues as they all need maintenance on all bikes there are many more issues but i just wanted to mention a few , all in all i think these bikes are a labor of love.

    Wow! that last one is even weirder than the Allstate 250 my dad rode back in the 1950s. It was a two stroke with 2 cylinders, one in front of the other and there is a shared combustion chamber. The rear cylinder had the intake and transfer ports and the front cylinder had the exhaust ports. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split-single_engine

    Generally engines with a precombustion chamber are noisy but require less tune ups and burn a wide range of fuel.

    I do like the idea of diesel bikes, but... 0-100 kmh is something like a minute and after 100 km your hands have shaken off. These bikes are not fun to drive at all, but they do take you from A to B with little fuel. But... so does 125-250 cc gasoline single and is helluva lot more fun. Much lighter and faster. I think 250 cc fuel injected liquid cooled single might be optimal. It can be fun and it can be frugal, though not at the same time, unfortunately. I think 2 litres per 100 km is possoble, but then so is 7 litres.

    Actually the Classic 350 is petrol. And it is less than 20 years old. The one you are looking for is the Taurus. A modified Bullet 350. The bullet is the one produced from the 1950s. A Taurus model was created with a Diesel engine. It didn't sell much. It wasn't hugely popular. The Classic and Bullet still is one of the most common bikes in India.

    The Sommer bike with Hatz engine sounds almost like the original Royal Enfield with petrol engine, it's also more powerful than Royal Enfields own diesel model, it looks kinda cool as well when you like the rat look.
    But you reaaly want to look for diesel bikes only when your'e looking for low running costs as a daily mode of cheap transport, altough some of the heftier bikes shown seem not to be cheap in purchase at all.
