Swimming in the middle of the Pacific looks cool and also terrifying at the same time..
It feels that way too.
Who the fuck called that ocean pacific? George Orwell? Like, Ministry of Peace? You mean War!
@Justget Onwithit very wise
Sometimes those moments you remember the most
I wouldn’t chance it 😎
Wow when u went swimming it's so beautiful I could cry. That water is the most beautiful sapphire blue 🔵 when u look down u can see nothing but blue. The visibility is crazy. There was nothing around no whales or fish not even a shrimp lol nothing. What an experience I hope to do this one day. I first saw a group of girls who rowed from San Francisco to Honolulu this summer & I followed their social media post the entire journey whenever they could post. & They swam in the same sapphire blue water you did. I've been interested in boating trips to Hawaii from California every since lol now I can't get enough watching these videos
There are frequently people looking for crew if you put your name out there.. Cheers!
Your living the dream so many of us would love to be in. Good for you. Thank you for the video. Keep sailing
dont dream do it that is what I did
Thanks. Will do.
At night keep the northern star 19.7 degree above the horizon and that will be in line with Hilo Hawaii.
The North Star is right above Hilo..
Cheeper than a flight probably and you don't have to wear a facemask 👌👌🥂
and no sperimental jab required lol
When you're swimming in the middle of the pacific and you are looking down, that is hands down the creepiest visual ever.
Yes, absolutely terrifying to think that there is miles of water beneath.
Totally agree
My dad was a sailor, he loved the sea.. and I understand why..
Love the upside-down shot out in the middle of the pacific, freakin epic!
I'm not a sailor but I would imagine that walking on land after an extensive journey would be quite the task.
Sometimes it's a bit wobbly. Sometimes I even wake up days later and feel the whole room is rolling like a boat.
Very cool. Tuna catch was epic !
Thanks
The captain is a barrel of laughs ,is he detoxing ?he is lucky to have such a positive personality as a shipmate!
On my bucket list to sail to hawaii.. Let me join you first time watcher
thanks, I love it, iam here in Sacramenyo, CA, originally from Kwaj, Marshall Islands, been here in Southern Cali for 20 some years and I like it here but will go home some day, so yeah, happy sailing adventures guy, thank again!
Very cool! Hopefully it's still above water when you get there.
Wow just realized how very similar the Alburge 30 is to my Cheoy Lee 27 I am currently fitting out for the same journey.
Enjoy!
I'm a Maine lobsterman a 6th generation lobsterman to be exact, I just wanted to comment on the bananas being bad luck this is taken seriously by most Maine salts other superstitions are you are never allowed to whistle on a boat Also bad luck, you can never use the word pig 🐖 hog, pork or any word to describe a pig another one is that it is considered really bad luck to paint your boat blue 🔵 and never change a boats name if you buy one used, keep the name it has. On a lighter note it's considered really good luck to get pooped on by a seagull or any other type of sea bird. And if you ever catch lump fish in your trap you have to kiss it before you throw it back 😜 I'm not ashamed to say i have kissed many o lump fish! Anyway cool videos 👍 and safe travels guys!
I don't have anything against people who take superstitions seriously but I tend to only pay attention to the ones that make sense to me and my situation. thanks for sharing all those and happy lump fish kissing! Hope to see you for a lobster feast someday. Cheers!
Its Bad Luck not to be superstitious!!
I've been living in San Francisco for most of my life... been dreaming about heading out the gate like this for a long time.
On a SUP or a sailboat? or Both? I have a friend who will take you out check out mayonthebay.
@@Routesofchange On a sailboat... I almost bought an Alberg 35 last week, but missed out as I was just about to head to the marina to look at it when the owner called and said it sold. Tough luck as it appeared to be really well maintained.
@@Routesofchange Oh wow, I can't find mayonthebay. Is that your friend's UA-cam?
You should have been tacking downwind as you sail faster and much more comfortable plus a chance at using favourable wind shifts.
Not much faster actually. We were sailing at close to hull speed much of the time and it would have added days to the journey if we were tacking back and forth off course. More comfortable for sure.
Peter Staples Tacking downwind to go faster usually only applies to multihulls.
OMG 😳 I f#cking LOST it when you ate the EYEBALL 👁! Too much for me before breakfast, LMAO 😜
Great Boat! I lived in Bolinas and surfed there for years. Farallon Islands = big white sharks....
35:48, that tasty snack we call “concha” on our island. You need a screwdriver to get them from the rocks. The meat is a bit tough, but super delicious. By the way, we eat the concha raw too. Bon appetite.!!
Greetings from the Dutch Antilles.
Thanks for the tips!
You could put chine runners on your sailboat & maybe a little more led in the ballast to stop the rolling side to side motion.
shame Carl didn't live long enough to have access to the youtube comments section...
i'd love to do this one day, just to anywhere; hawai'i and beyond would be a plus. thanks for the video.
Thanks for watching!
Subscribed, gonna head to the start and watch from there bud.

Thanks. It a bit of a slow start but some interesting times in the early months...
@@Routesofchange I bet. I'm very much looking forward to it all 👍
35 year a go was looking this video Jean du sud. Never liv my head..last year I finally got a boat. I am in Nederland there is no Halberg here so I gotta Albin Vegas 27 . I prepared the boat next summer all will go direction sud. The Caraibe sea here I come.
Nice! Enjoy the sail Mario.
Yo, I am enjoying your sailing videos and humor. Keep these nice vids coming and nobody gets hurt! ;-)
Thanks, will do!
Seems a lot of arm chair sailors critizing the two....pretty easy to do when you're simply watching a video and not actually out there in the elements...
I specifically edit in bits of poor sailing techniques, "unsafe" behaviour, and clowning, to give people the satisfaction of insulting and feeling intelligent. It's my gift to the arm chair sailing community. I'm not sure if they appreciate it or if it just makes them more angry. :)
Hilo is waiting for you! My house is very near the harbor as it were
Sorry I missed yah! I love Hilo. see episode #42
Dolce trolls him and uses his motor the whole time, forcing RoC to stand-up paddle board all the way to Hilo.
haha. I think I would turn back pretty fast!
ceviche zesty fresh salsa is gotta be good out there in the middle of the ocean
delicious!!
Wow amazing man
Showing my love & support from hilo 😂
Aloha. Thanks man.
I wonder if I could withstand that constant up and down? I experienced it in my 9 foot kayak, as i was being pulled out to sea. It was scary. Couldn't paddle hard enough, couldn't rest. I was super glad that coast guard came to rescue me lol.
You get used to it eventually.
First ocean sail!? Uploaded 2 weeks ago, wtf did I watch 2 months ago then... I'm confused
Click bait video title .. nothing more
I might be wrong but I'm thinking this might have been his first sailboat crossing but he is posting the video out of order. If you think about it, it seems he just met Dave, sailed with him, and then rented the boat from Dave for solo sailing. Also, if he started in Canada and departed in this boat with Dave from California, how would he have got to California if he was already a continent away. I'm not sure why he posted it so late but that seems to make sense.
Very few people watched the original vlogs from this sail (sub 10k). I combined them into one video so that all the folks who didn't know this sail existed can watch it. It has worked...Sorry for the confusion.
So, so blue.
So cool
I knew very early that You and Dave didn't exactly have the tightest bond here. I'm guessing you hitched a ride with him? That's fucked up to just ditch someone literally on one of the most expensive islands on the planet with just a paddle board to get around on. At the same time I can imagine the difficulty in being in a small sail boat for nearly a month with a complete stranger that you'd rather not even be with in the first place. Bring to mind a lesson from my grandmother: "Always have your own". Wish you the best in your journeys bro. Oh and Fuck Dave lol
Dan Foremost I mean a month out at sea... Dave should’ve been quite thankful he got to see some ass... little hairy but beggars can’t be choosers 🤣🤣🤣.
He wanted help for the sail and invited me. We met in person a couple weeks earlier but had been speaking for about 8 months. We actually got along fine on the sail and he told me I made for great crew (and wasn't lying to make me feel better). Although I was pissed, I couldn't blame him for ditching me. If you want to be alone you want to be alone. BTW Dave is awesome and you shouldn't say bad things about him, especially when you see what happens in the next episodes. ua-cam.com/video/NaTT67Bh91k/v-deo.html cheers!
He was sleeping! :)
Dave is a drug smuggler whom just attracted to much “heat” to his operation.
you will never catch me copper ( jame cagney ) quote if I remember it right appologies if its not brain surgury has taken some of my memories
Please Forgive my ignorance. I don't understand why you paddle boarded out of the marina, when the boat was working...
He is travelling without motors and the boat needed a motor to get out to sea so he paddled out while the other guy drove the boat out.
@@mapman148 why couldn't he also be on the boat?
@@randomshortvids3111 he explains it at 0:00
Are their great white sharks in the area of the Golden Gate Bridge? I remember seeing a video from an Alcatraz tourist boat of a seal being eaten by something huge.
They likely come in there once in a while...
@@Routesofchange More than "once in a while." White sharks definitely inhabit the bay.
Haha, so out of order, been wondering where this video was!!
The individual episodes were up in the proper order but not many people were watching them....
Tuna is so delicious
This wasn't bad. I liked it. Was hooked the whole time. Subscribed. Did you guys keep yourselves separated to keep from getting on one another's nerves? Also did Dave really ditch you there?
Take me with you 😁
Dude, I just realised that you look just like Vincent van Gogh. Are you related to him?
Not that I know of. :)
biggest plot twist the end of this video holy moly
Have you seen what happens next!?
Where are all the fish at?

So what is the reason for not wanting to use an engine on your journey???
routesofchange.org/faqs
15:09 Somewhere I've read that sea ankers suck. In books they are the perfect solution. On the ocean they are not. They get you parallel to the waves. They are too large. They are too small. They are never good. Better forget sea ankers. Can you two agree?
I think our issue was not enough practice, not enough wind, and poor setup/deployment. I think when you really need one it can make the difference. On a previous ocean rowing journey we used one frequently and it made a huge difference. Same length boat but with way less windage...I think it really depends on the boat, the seas, the chute, etc... Can't hurt to carry one and be willing to throw it if it doesn't work.
You are my kinda crazy man...I was guided to your vid by a group of girls giggling over your "ruggedness " because apparently we have the exact same voice and both love the water ...except I'm a 6'4 Hawiian/Blk guy that's kinda crazy. So basically besides my height we are twins ! Seriously Broseph STAY SAFE man. Be careful take risk but don't bet stupid we ...as in the world...needs folk like you to stick around dude. Other than that thanks for sharing and your patience as I know how mentally taxing crossing can be. Love from the lame ass city of Dayton Ohio
Cheers Broseph. Were the girls cute? It seems 90% of my viewership is 45yr old men who want to sail across an ocean. I'm actually 6'3' so not far below. Keep making Dayton less lame with Aloha. Mahalo.
@@Routesofchange indeed they are. Just one is married so I reckon its technically two. And I can kinda understand why so many older dudes are envious of you. I used to fight and was a bodyguard and for some reason I always had older folks thinking I was some badass or it was the life. Nobody ever realizes I'm not at a badass and rarely and I mean rarely even had conflicts or confrontations doing personal protection work and MMA is mostly training and even when I did fight it wasnt some hatred fueled deal and I often was even cool with my opposition. But you are different. You are out there experiencing it instead of watching on UA-cam. And you aren't a douche about it and you are even admirable to share this with the world. Of course youd pull envy my man. I'm grateful you exist Broseph . I'm going thru hell trying to figure out how to afford meds and get water back on so believe me you are helping just distracting some of us. So on that note...PLEASE PLEASE stay safe man . And take care of yourself don't take your health for granted. You don't want to end up fighting some nasty term illness. I thought I'd be dead by now so I didn't really take my mortality seriously. I wish you nothing but calm seas and good health man ! Yeesh. I didn't mean to get all emotional. Well you can't see that but you know what I'm saying. Love and peace kido !
Love and peace brother. It's good to get emotional. The ocean does that to me every time. I'm always safe my friend, even in death I will be safe. The world will have me in some form or another. I appreciate your words. Thanks man. Here's to some meds and power to keep you rolling. Salud.
You look so young in this. .

Is he the first person to do this?
Which part? The Sail to Hawaii - definitely not. The trip around the world without a motor, also not really. Many people have done similar journeys but each one has been quite different due to the nature of the world and the way in which they traveled. Cheers!
How could that dude just leave you like that! Did you pay him? I don't know that sounds pretty shady, where did he go?😟
See the episodes that follow. :)
Wait...so when there was no wind, you brought the sails in...and when there was a lot of wind you set full sail??? What?
When there is no wind it is bad for the sails and rigging to flap around serving no purpose. I reef the sails when the wind begins to overpower the boat...
come to kosrae one more time
I'd love to. Thanks.
30 foot isn't exactly small. Do this on a Flicka 20 or something.
I hear that. but you know that 30 footer is small to someone who hasn't done much open ocean sailing. I really have enjoyed his videos. Especially his first solo from Hawaii to Marshall Islands. After that trip , he's ready for a flicka. You can see he gets rattled once or twice for sure. Good Guy. Real Good Guy.
Any boat you can't stand up in is a small boat lol. All relative I guess. There is no arguing, however, that this is smaller than the majority of all boats doing that or a similar crossing.
My friends just did thst run from Santa Barbara to La Paz and then to Hiva Oa...in a crappy 26 ft sailboat. I've known people in smaller boats male it to Hawaii with ease, and I've know folks in much larger sturdier boats not even and it half way to HI
@@Frindleeguy These days, sure. And hats off to this guy for going against the grain. It's too bad that sailboats, like everything else, have unnecessarily inflated in size. Point I was making is that there are a lot of actually small boats that can make a simple transpac like this possible. But I guess we're to the point where a 30-footer is considered small lol.
@@RealityIsTheNow I guess my shopping/building/upfitting/flipping experience has jaded me. I only buy 43+ footers and none are newer than 1977. I've never even looked at sub-30 foot boats so I had no idea. I wouldn't do that crossing on a 30' boat but I'm also 6'5" (hence the 43' threshold for headroom) and I don't particularly like being cramped, and if I can't stand while I cook I would be miserable.
How did you learn to sale?
My dad taught me in a small boat on a tiny lake.
aarrrrrrr where b me sea legs, aaar!
Bananas 😵
I would never risk a boat and crew for someone’s idiosyncrasies.
👍😊👌👏
If you ever saw a great white launch out of the water you might have reconsidered the paddle board. They’re not theoretical. They’re out there.
I surf, so yes, everyone should be very afraid of the ocean and stay far away from it, especially those places where there are good waves.
@@Routesofchange hahaha... I feel the same about people and fear of bears out on the Appalachian trail or Pacific Crest. Get Off My Lawn.
Routes of Change I surf too and I agree. The ocean is a terrifying place with all kinds of scary shit that wants to kill you so by all means do NOT surf - anywhere!🤪🏄🏻♂️
P.S. By the way, that side by side rocking motion when going downwind is called “yawing” and is typical of monohulls.
climbing on the fore of the deck at night by yourself with seas like those is a bad idea, in fact irresponsible. Set rigging that doesn't require checking on to get through the night or wake your crew while you check the fore deck.

Old sailors once said " sailing small boats on the open ocean is like being in jail except you could drown .
It can feel like that on a bad day but it feels like the complete opposite most of the time. Very liberating!
It must be like not wearing a bra from what I hear
Scary I could never jump in the ocean
One thing for sure you'll never have to worry about going hungry there's always some fresh clams for dinner.
Your goal of circumnavigation should have begun with your own sailboat rather than hitching rides from sailors.
Although it is common for sailors to seek volunteer deck mates for longer passages, it's also common to set them ashore at the first opportunity if they fail to hold up their end, are poor company or for any reason whatsoever.
A 30 foot boat requires total comparability and teamwork not often experienced anywhere else. Even loving marriages sometimes go south after long passages as well as boats "for sale" in far-away destinations.
I did enjoy the very informative video. Thanks for posting it.
My goal of circumnavigation started in a borrowed canoe. I was far from having a sailboat of my own.
@@Routesofchange Yes, that was, and is, very ambitious of you and brave. I think you'd be surprised how many guys have crossed big oceans with very modest boats, some of them homebuilt and others auction wrecks...
There are sea-gypsies even now, scattered all over the world and living on very little and seeing the world too.
The main requirement is courage (which you already have) and an old boat (which you can get.)
Then it'll be your turn to maroon some disagreeable deck-hand.
"Get Real, Get Gone," is a book you might find interesting. I did.
Bon Voyage and we'll hope to see you sometime where the sun sets and leaves a shimmering, golden path to follow.
You've seen it yourself.
@@jamesbaldwin7676 sea gypsies circumnavigating? Where?
@@Pulaco.Dimantag Lots of folks have circumnavigate on next to nothing starting with Joshua Slocum in the 19th century. He was dirt-poor and found his vessel lying, abandoned in a field. He salvaged it, renamed it "The Soray" and sailed away.
In modern times, a young teenager, Robin Graham, became the youngest, single-hander to circumnavigate in a 23' boat.
The list goes on and today we have many folks continuing to live and sail on limited means.
It does require some means, passports, visas, entry fees and such but the world is still open to intrepid wanderers and they are out there now.
James Baldwin - I don’t know that there was any compatibility issues though, I think Dave just went to Hawaii and that’s where his trip ended. Because this guy here (Marcus) is still traveling in Dave’s boat and renting it. That’s at least what I understand.

Too late now, but for others who want to swim off a becalmed boat in the middle of the ocean.... please throw a line with float off the stern.
