It’s hard to cheat the pocket on a Diamond. The red labels are even harder; at least the one at my hall is because it has deeper shelves than the blue labels. And they’re 9’, too. They have a bunch of 7’ Diamonds as well, but they’re the older models and I can’t remember if they even have a label like these ones. Long story short, playing on Diamonds helps me play on the Valleys in my league. They’re way easier than Diamonds. Lol
in some regards, yes. Easier to make shots on a valley but, the "touch" and "shape" can sometimes be harder, due to the fact that a valley table is harder to finesse! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support!@@djamo1969

I am a 6/7, and had to play a 3 in 8 ball a few weeks back. For me, it can be difficult to focus on playing the same type of game against a 3 that you would against a high ranked player. In my experience, most 3's can run 2-4 balls with an open table. So, just like when playing a high skill level, you definitely don't wanna leave an empty table. That's what I did in the rack that I lost. Haha.

I'm a 3 and play against our 7's in practice regularly. If you want to get better it's the only way. I also recommend playing local tourneys...I doubled up with another lvl 3 at an 8-ball scotch doubles tourney and we finished 2nd outta 20 teams! Talk abut a boost in confidence? Sending 6's and 7's home was a blast!

Hi Josh, New subscriber here. Love your channel. Lively commentary and good information. Yea its always tough playing an opponent when they only need 2 games. And especially tough when you give them a game. doh! Way to manage the match.
One comment on the match, @36:45 your opponent called for a time-out for that kick on the 3 ball. Then they marked the aim point with something. That is not legal in APA, or it wasn't when I played a few years ago. Fortunately it didn't really effect the result. Good luck with your channel and your game.

Question: After winning your 5th frame, the cue ball was still moving when you collected the un-potted balls to rack. In your comp, is that loss of frame? (earlier you were marking the pocket, to follow the rules, so I'm curious if this was friendly convention, or not part of your rules?)
Yes.. when your in an apa tournament, that is a loss of rack. When your playing regular league play, against someone you know well, that petty rule is typically not called (just like making the pocket)
Just like you said about not practicing all the time you lose your consistency it's like your mind knows what to do but you can't get your hands to move the cue the way it needs to be

Do you play second ball on break with draw or do you roll or hit cue ball in the center? I have tried it and often scratch cue ball in the corner pocket.
I play it with draw and outside English. Check out one of my pattern play videos. I explain my 8 balk break
Playing 3’s are tough! One unexpected scratch on the 8 and they’ve got a point.

I'm a 5/5, spent 2 sessions playing masters to get out of being stuck at 4/4, so I've played a lot of 7/9's. I subbed midway through watching this because of how humble you are (not that the guys in my league aren't, but they don't record/post their matches), but it's refreshing to see you, full transparency with your mistakes and all. Most of the higher level players I've seen post will only show their near perfect matches, and when asked about it, act like they don't make mistakes. I know that's not true, lots of really good 7/9's in my area, and in masters, I was usually able to get 2 racks, a lot of times to 4-5, and every now and then it came down to the last rack. I even won 3 matches in those two sessions. It's great to see posts like this. Keep 'em coming, man!
That's awesome bro. I appreciate the nice words too. EVERYONE misses, even the pros. Good amateurs miss more often than we'd like to admit, that's for sure. We used to have some Rated Tournaments & yes we had some 3s... Two that I remember, were a couple Bouncers, at a local Strip Club & they were some big ol' boys. They didn't play too bad, but they could Break. In fact, they would beat most folks who couldn't get out or couldn't Break & yes they mad a lot of game balls with shootin' hard & a crushing break, that pocketed the 9....
It's hard to play someone with a handicap, especially when they can crush the balls

before they changed the scoring system it was common for people to throw low numbers at 7's - but you're right now it's only worthwhile in 9 ball - great video really like how you break down your thought process on how you go about the rack.

I spent two years dumping games in APA pool back in the 90s just to gamble with so called 7s lol. I robbed so many guys who just didn’t have a clue. Damn internet and camera phones ruined the hustle!

As someone who plays for fun at a college bar that has beer stained, “quicksand” felt and a not quite level floor, this gives me confidence that I’m a better player than I thought.
I feel like there’s about a 10 item checklist that should be the first lesson for any novice. 1) just look at the table; what are the hard shots? 2) where’s the Q ball going- this is more important than where is the object ball going. 3) did you mean to hit it so hard? 4) why do you play so many shots with draw, did you forget rule #2? 5) try a safety every now and again; going 7 rails and moving every ball on the table isn’t a winning strategy. 6) you can’t change physics

I'm a 3 and when I played APA my team always put me up against 6-7 if the other team had them. Seems like a lot of the higher rank players we played against would get pissed off at it and they would play like crap enough for me to get to the hill or even steal the match on occasion. Our 5s-6s we're confident in beating the teams 4s-5s but would try too hard on their 6s-7s.
it's a good strategy for 9 ball, for sure. I use it sometimes too. It normally doesn't work that well in 8 ball though!

When I go up blind as a 7 I pretty much know they gonna sacrifice a 3 or a 2. It’s not rare at all in my town. Usually those are the easiest matches to win but occasionally crazy stuff does happen.
That happens a lot here, but in 9 ball. Rarely do we see a team put a 3 in a 7 in 8ball. Thanks for watching!
I don't use the 8-ball break (hitting 2nd ball in the rack)), when playing a 2 or a 3 skill level player, because if you make the 8 and scratch, you lose the game. Since they only need 2 wins to beat you, it's risky.

Good morning, I hope you’re doing well. It must be very cold up there today. My question is that the balls always jump out of the pocket whenever I play stun or draw shot into the side pocket. What can I do about it?
If the object ball is jumping out of the pocket, it means you're hitting the ball way to hard (at least, that's the only time I've ever seen that happen).. if that's the case, work on more follow through, and less power, on your shots. See if that helps

That was the 9 ball. He was on the 8 ball but, he hit the 9 first
Hey Josh let me give you tip from a skill level 7 in 8 ball skill level 9 in 9 ball to another skill level 7.
I don't know for certain but in this match it looks like you prefer to break from the right side of the pool table.
Practice from both sides and from hitting the apex ball straight on.
tip 1
if your opponent likes to tilt the rack away from the way you break.
break from the other side you will make the 8 on the break a lot more.
if the apex ball is not touching the 2 second balls the 8 will fly out even better.
I have made the 8 on the break over 400 times. not all of them were wins.
tip 2
when playing any level but especially the lower skill levels and it comes to hill hill.
break from head on. hit the apex ball straight on.
this will help in not scratching.
tip 3
there were a couple of times where after the break you could of played a safe which would of open up a couple of your balls plus I think you would of gotten ball in hand because he would have had to kick at the ball.
even if you didn't the outcome would be to your advantage anyway.
Then I thought you would of ran out the table.
tip 4
remember when playing a skill level 3 or 2 the more balls on the table the harder it is for them to runout.
when I end up playing a 2 or 3 or 4. my goal is to win by creating as many innings I need to win.
a break and run is not the only way to win.

don't play skill level 4's

Nickname "Dead Silence" would be mine. My first match ever i was given so much crap so being happy about winning a game (not the entire match). Apparently the league even though it was APA was a bit serious, so i took that to heart. I barely make mention of my good shots and the bad ones or misses i dont react either.

Great lil match! Been playing on and off for about 40 years, and usually it takes me about 10 racks to warm up, maybe 15 to get hot if I'm gonna. I have no idea what APA skill-level I'd be graded, what's the highest? 10? SVB? Reyes? I have kind of Efren's outside-the-box creativity, kicking skills etc . . but a trip-hammer break like Shane. Favorite player of all time though? Mizz. Have a fun time whatever ya do!

Play it on a 10' table that way and it'd be even easier. I only just bought a cue stick a couple years ago. Just finally got tired of boogery house cues.

I am a 7 in apa 8 ball and the other teams always throw off on me if they get a chance but it's normally always an easy 3 points I enjoy masters a lot more its just a race to 7 no matter whomever you play
Ya, I love the Masters format. They don't have a Masters division where I play yet. They did in the old area I played at though.
My nickname would be... "oh snap" as in I also have a way of being self-destructive. LOL My opponent cornerhooked me by the corner pocket. The object ball was by the middle diamond on the short rail. I aimed at the edge of the other side of the pocket almost aiming at the tit. That causes the cueball to jump to the right. If you control the speed right it will hit the object ball. I hit it so well I made the ball. The cue ball went straight up for a perfect shot in the side for my next move... almost... it rolled just a hair too much and I hooked myself behind one of his balls. Everyone said oh man what an unlucky roll. It was a great trick shot to get out of the cornerhook I learned back in the late 1980s. I just wish I had not over rolled that cueball by a tad... I would have been out. As you can see I can also pull shots out of nowhere to get out of a jam. Another reason to call me the "oh snap" guy.

I am a bit surprised they allow a player to use the chalk (or anything) to mark the spot where they want to shoot at when kicking - or even banking. Is that really allowed in APA? In the pool halls I have played in America, and the Philippines, that shit would never be allowed no matter what skill level.

@@Amateur_Pool That is actually a recent rule change (last 2 or 3 years) and prior to that it was definitely NOT permitted to place chalk or a joint protector or anything else as an aid to aiming . Whether by a coach or the shooter himself . I'm not sure why they made the change. Maybe the rules committee decided that since the league is encouraging new players to join , they wanted to make coaching and instructing easier . From my experience , it doesn't make that much difference in the outcome of the shot . Low SL players are capable of missing just about anything .

39:32 - if you're genuinely worried about scratching, why hit that shot as hard as you did? You didn't need to risk the scratch in middle if you hit it even 20% softer.
you are right! I just wanted to make sure I wasn't slow rolling that cut shot. I tend to miss that cut a LOT more often when I hit it softer. I appreciate the input!

I played APA before. I could beat the sl 6/7 while I was a handicap 2/3. You never know your luck. But your strokes would drive your player crazy.

1:00, 4:41, 7:00 Josh, your shots seem like your arm is too tight. Relax your grip and work on your follow through. You're jabbing at the ball, which makes your shots jittery and your accuracy plummets.
Yup, that's one of my battles to fight. I have a muscle disorder (myotonia congenita) that makes me real stiff sometimes

I am a strong 4 and one of my matches last night was a very strong 2 should be a3-4 and i did not take it as serious as i should’ve i was 3-0 and she ran 5 balls and the 8 and on the hill. I had to pull my head out of my ass and made next game and match. Wont fall for that one any more. Lol. Keep up the great videos cuz.

It sucks but, it's the nature of the beast... If they knew to call the timeout earlier, then that would mean they could see the trouble coming and avoid it themselves. I guess we'll be stuck showing them the kicking spot, LOL. Thanks for watching!

@@Amateur_Pool Coaching lower rated players. You and I are both 7s in apa...but the coaching aspect I'm a bit lost the times I have. Because how I took to pool growing up...some players at times get the vibe they aren't as interested as you and I...where while they'd like to learn and I don't mind answering questions...how to not overwhelm them with concepts, not potentially come off as rude, etc. Been trying the last time I played league to get them to think for themselves, while trying to be reassuring they can do it. Times I am asked I try to view them as I would my kid...trying to ask what their thoughts are, while trying to give a little bit of a hint so they'll try a bit more and not feel the only answer is to call for a time out.
@excxmoody ya, man... that can be tough sometimes.. that has less to do with pool, and more to do with reading the individual person. Some people soak up the knowledge, others could care less. I normally try to look at the table and just give them a couple of options, and let them decide. I'll explain the pros and cons of each option. Your not going to get your players to think the way you and i do, right away. Remember, it's takes years to get good at this game. I appreciate you!
For instance, myself I've learned from just trying different things like trying to kick or tracking the object ball from many angles at different speeds. Just how I learn. However trying to coach...I notice they're not as into billiards.@@Amateur_Pool
@excxmoody not everyone has the passion for it. Some people use pool league as an excuse to go out and have fun at the bar. Other people (like us) play league because the pool IS the fun for us.

@@Amateur_Pool…It’s a trust thing. You don’t trust yourself to hit the edge of the ball or aiming at on rail or near rail shots. I’m a 7 myself and I used to struggle with the same thing, until I forced myself to see the edge to edge with practice. It sometimes looks like you will miss the ball entirely, but you don’t. Once you get it you’ll never look back. Trust me.
