I have tested both cars. The 50 is a really cool-looking, low-slung car with the right buttons (a la Subaru Outback) to make it feel outdoorsy - and while it's not a Jeep or Isuzu Trooper, it is pretty outdoorsy - but for my money, the CX5 intelligence, feature set, and suspension wins. Unless something really jumps out, I'm leaning toward a CX5.

My humble opinion, having been living with a Mazda 3 the last 6 months, I enjoy the command knob and buttons to control the infotainment system, it becomes very intuitive and it’s nice to not have to aim your finger at the screen. What I love about Mazda is they drive Great, have real transmissions with gears, and are very reliable. While never the cutting edge, they are among the best long term buy. As Subaru has fallen with leaky engines, crappy CVT's and even weak AWD systems, Mazda had risen with real engineering, reliability, and design.

I got the 5 yesterday. It will be driven on road like 95% of its life so that's where I want it tuned. We were actually looking at the 30 vs the 5, not the 50. The 5 handles much better. Stays flat when cornering yet still eats up pot holes nicely. The 30 was more cushy, a lot more body roll when you were casually driving than the 5. That kind of thing makes my wife seasick so that was the deal breaker. I was going in expecting the smaller 30 to have better handling and acceleration but the 5 blew me away. We also test drive a 5 with 50K miles on it and I think it handled better than the new one so that is something to look forward to.

I just bought a 2023 CX-50 in soul red in April. I love it. Smooth, comfortable driving in the city, on the highway, and even on poorly maintained roads. The sports mode really makes it feel like a V6 when it’s only a 4 cylinder. Don’t see myself wanting to drive anything else anytime soon. I plan on taking good care of it and having it for at least 100k miles, granted it stays reliable.

Case did a great job! I would really like to see him doing more vehicle reviews. His review, thoughts, and opinions seemed spot on and unbiased. I’ve always liked the Mazda vehicles. They always look pretty nice and have decent price points. They’re nothing too special, but they’re definitely quality vehicles, dependable, stylish, and affordable, with good performing motors. The off-road test was just right here. That’s probably as far off the pavement as 99% of people will ever take them. Great video here. Just average priced vehicles that most anyone can afford. Even for being the upper tier models, $40k isn’t too bad these days and the starting prices are darn good. Fuel efficiency is solid for a vehicle this size. Haha 😆, my mom is in need of a new car and after watching this and posting nothing but positive comments, I’ll have to tell her to take a look at these.

The CX-50 sacrifices some headroom compared to the CX-5, which is why the CX-5 has more cargo room, but I need the greater length and width over the height. Either way both are great vehicles, and a credit to Mazda.

What I didn't like about the CX-50 is the small sideview mirrors and I felt a bit cramped in the cabin. I love the CX-50s panoramic sunroof but again, being cramped in the cabin I couldn't fully enjoy it. I am leaning toward another CX-5. Overall I am disappointed with Mazda for making EIGHT different model levels. Also, no remote start on the keyfob. It's almost 2023, all vehicles should have remote starts.

I actually feel sorry for the manufacturers sometimes. The Auto Journalists (TFL not included so much) are always pushing for "Handling Suspension" stiffer ride and road feeling steering and off-road prowess. Then the public get these vehicles and hate them. Too harsh, too stiff, tiring to drive. As an day-to-day vehicle, most of us (me included) would rather have easy steering, soft ride and quiet interior. 98% will never drive their vehicles off the pavement. I would’ve had to sacrifice most of the luxuries of the Premium trim Mazda3 for an equally priced CX-5 Select or Preferred, but it would have been so much better to drive. At least the grip of the AWD makes up for some of the ride quality and handling drawbacks inherent in the new Mazda3. Also, swap the tires. The OE ones are trash. DWS06 Plus was my choice and it was a dramatic improvement.

@@stevep8773 This is actually a benefit. Torsion beams are inherently worse than multilink conceptually, but with a lot of R&D it is possible to tune a Torsion Beam so it feels nearly identical to multilink outside of extreme edge cases that you’d primarily only find on a race track with highspeed turns.
By doing this, you get added benefits from Torsion Beams, they are mechanically simpler so its easier to maintain, its cheaper and quieter due to less parts. Torsion beams are also lighter because they don’t need a subframe. They also allow for more cargo room/AWD room since they take up less space.
In terms of speed Torsion is still good. The Civic Type R had a Torsion Beam suspension. They said they went to Torsion Beam because it provides an improved rear roll rigidity saving extra weight by not needing an anti-roll bar.
I personally don’t think its a coincidence that Toyota bought 5% of Mazda and agreed to a partnership right around the same time that Mazda released their patented Torsion Beam and Skyactiv high power/efficiency engines. Then all of a sudden the first car Mazda and Toyota produce as partners at the Alabama plant just happens to have a Torsion Beam suspension even though Toyota hasn’t used Torsion Beams for something like 25years. It just doesn’t make sense for Toyota to partner with a small company like Mazda and give their Hybrid technology to Mazda unless there is something valuable they wanted to learn from Mazda.

@@WARnTEA Well, I agree to a point but I think we can agree torsion beam is considered "cheap & cheerful". Good value for money and as we agree better packaging - esp for an EV. But no luxury car ever touted its torsion beam suspension and no one ever "upgraded" a model to TB. And if you look at this new "U" configuration, it appears the coils are doing a huge bend when they actuate. Obviously I trust the engineers, but the spring rates have to be weird as a result. Typically, a TB coil operates almost perfectly linearly and vertically. Testers have pointed out the CX-50 ride is not as good - despite them glossing over a lot (like the uglier exterior and interior) which means it must really be bad, I suspect. But it will improve with 800 lbs of battery in the back, I bet :-)

I think this is a bit of a missed opportunity for Mazda. They have the more street oriented CX5 so why not take the CX-50 a bit further to actually compete with the Subaru Wilderness line up? I would have used those as a benchmark - 9.2/9.5 " clearance and 20 degree + approach angles, comprehensive under-body protection. I have an Outback Wilderness and have taken it on some technical trails - it's very capable. I don't think the Mazda CX-50 would really compete outside of rougher dirt roads. But then that begs the question - how much more capability than the CX5 is this really providing? If you wanted additional off-road capability an Outback Wilderness is probably the better choice, as I really think the regular CX5 will do almost everything this would do.

About 50 miles a day for work not including grocery runs, or runs to go see friends, and I took a weekend trip that put about 250-300 on it. I had a 19 CX-9 GT I traded in for it because the numbers worked out and the dealer didn’t mark it up at all, so with trade in, my cost went up only $60 a month. My other car is a 2007 FX45 and the Cx-50 to me feels somewhere between the CX-9 and FX45. Space wise, I’m getting used to the smaller crossover, but it’s the same size as my FX45 so it’s not too hard to get used to since I’ve road tripped the Infiniti in the past and been fine space wise. I love it personally. It does have a few hard plastics around the interior, but it’s not bad, they give it a more rugged type vehicle feel so to me they don’t bother me. It has this weird feel driving it where you feel like you’re driving a car and an suv at the same time, it’s unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in a crossover which adds to the fun for me 😂. The road my neighborhood is on is terrible with so many hard bumps, and the 50 feels good driving on it, it’s a rough ride on that road because of how bad it is, but it’s still comfortable on it. If you don’t mind a little rougher ride over a CX-5, and love the agressive style of the 50, I’d say it’s definitely something worth looking into. My friend/coworker says it reminds him of a Subaru Forrester. I’m curious to see how the Meridian does since that will be a little more off road based. mine is a Turbo Premium Plus, kind of like the one reviewed here, but in Poly Metal Grey with the black interior.

@@samthecarguy1143 yeah I definitely need something I can go on long drives in, also the space is a must, some of the reasons I can’t do sedans, I’m a 5’11 woman and that leg space is a necessity. I drove a CX5 a while back and remember how smooth the drive was. Thanks for all the details!

I want to know if the seats are stiff and firm. I rode in a 5 before and I thought I was sitting on a wooden bench. Great reviews from both of you.

Any comments regarding the difference in CX-5 non-turbo vs. turbo? I am not a fan of turbos

    • @SokemRokemRobot
      @SokemRokemRobot 2 роки тому +1

A non-turbo gives you Cylinder Deactivation. A turbo does not. This is why I chose the turbo. In the 2021 CX-5, the turbo gives 40-63 more h.p., depending on if you're using premium fuel, or not. In the 2022 CX-5, the turbo gives 6 h.p. more, if premium fuel is used. With the 2022 CX-5 Turbo, the mileage is still 22 mpg City, 27 mpg Highway.

@@peterjordan2738 The CX-5 Turbo w/ AWD gets 22 mpg City, and 27 mpg Highway. Without the AWD, you'll get an extra mpg. The CX-5 without a turbo, and without AWD, will get you 24 mpg City, and 30 mpg Highway.
