    you think I can accomplish this with a large mini excavator? I have a bunch of experience on equipment just not dropping poles.

      I would think so; depending on your skill set. I’ll tell you, this was the first time I ever operated a backhoe 😆

    That's so smart! How wide is the hole you dug? Or did you dig a trench for it to slide in diagonally first?

    • @fixintodoitall
      @fixintodoitall  Рік тому +1

      Thank you for your comment. I dug the hole with this same backhoe, so the hole was much wider than the diameter of the pole. I did also have the start of the trench for the underground electrical to run to the cabin--Plenty of room! Luckily for me (not shown in the video), a neighbor just happened to have his excavator available to push the dirt back into place while my backhoe (rental) held the pole in place. Something to think about. I wouldn't want to push all that dirt back in place by shovel and something needs to hold that pole in place while doing so. Wish I shared that in the video.

      Yep I ended up going the easy way and paying for someone to install a 25ft pole for an overhead service and wire everything to the existing panel. Cost me $4500 in California!

    • @Steven-gv1ke
      @Steven-gv1ke Рік тому +2

      @@JP-zz5rm I just got a quote in Texas and for a 20 ft pole, with a prewired 200 amp meter and box, it's $1,100. It's an additional $400 if I want them to bring it out to my property and install it for me. So basically he saved $400 here depending on where he lives. I'm just thinking it over and my concern is I am getting a deal by buying a preset up pole, and with everything already attached, it seems like it would be almost impossible to install it myself without messing up all the hardware pre attached. If they mess it up during install, they have to replace it. When I figure the time it will take me to go get my trailer, drive to pick up the pole, then drop it off, then drive to go get my buddies tractor, all the gas, and the time it will take me to dig the hole, install the pole, and then take all the equipment back to the places I got it, it will be a very long day and I think after fuel I will only save about $300. I can work an extra day at work getting overtime and make that $300 extra doing quite a bit easier work than would be involved installing this pole.

    • @JP-zz5rm
      @JP-zz5rm Рік тому +2

      @@Steven-gv1ke I would go the easier route , only because it will save you the hassle of having to deal with digging the hole , placing it in there making sure everything is done right without damaging the pole or box. Not to mention they can test for power & what not & make sure everything is ready to go 100%. I had the guys who installed it stay until the inspector gave it the OK . I had to hire a company because where I am at we have a lot of hardpan & it’s really hard to get through without the right equipment.

    • @Steven-gv1ke
      @Steven-gv1ke Рік тому +2

      @@JP-zz5rm yeah also installing a pole with the meter, box, conduit, etc on it, is pretty tricky without potentially tearing the hardware up. If I let them install it and they mess it up, they have to pay for it. Plus I would not feel right not at least buying my buddy with the tractor, a nice steak dinner for letting me use it. In the end, it would only cost me about $250 more to have it installed. If it was $700 or so to install, I would absolutely do it myself.

      Ha, great question. It’s not so much about what state you live, it’s the county you live in. Counties and cities issue building permits. Btw, I’m in Utah.

    What kind of piping do you recommend for the electrical wires? and how deep does the pole get buried? Do you have to bury the pole in cement?

    • @fixintodoitall
      @fixintodoitall  Рік тому

      As far as pipe recommendations, I would check with local codes. My ground is very hard/rocky; I just dug a hole and slid it in place and covered it with the existing soil. I would imagine this would be the same for anywhere else, they might just have a different requirement on the depth they allow for the pole. Mine was 6 feet. Somewhere else if softer soil might require 8 feet. I would make sure to check with the power supplier what they all require through their code. Thank you for asking and for watching with your support--Good luck to you!!

    Were would you go to have someone come to you property and install electric poles then connect them to you home

    • @fixintodoitall
      @fixintodoitall  6 місяців тому

      First, you need to have your local power company find out if you can hook up, keep your fingers crossed you won't need to add a transformer before they hook you up. If you need a transformer, it'll come at your expense (I lucked out, but the next builder who followed behind me had to, lol). Second, you need your county or city (whoever has jurisdiction) to give you some direction. They'll give you direction as to what type of hook-ups they want you to have for your size of hook-up. Once completed, the county or city will send an inspector (at your expense) out to sign off and give you the permit for hookup. This permit is what the power company will need to hook you up to your place. It's pretty simple, you just need to make phone calls and someone will direct you to the right person. Best of wishes.

    That worked great. Next time try to spot the pole with balance point of the pole next to the hole. Choke the pole with a shorter sling about a foot or so towards the top of the pole from that original balance pole. Set your machine close enough that you can use the how part of the machine and clip the sling into the hood on the bucket( digging hoe. Have someone guide the pole from the butt as you log it up. Being that you picket it butt heavy it’ll stand right up but be a little wobbly. Then stick it in the hole and plumb it. This will work as long as you use a shorter sling so you don’t lose height from the hook on the bucket. Also as long as the hoe reaches high enough.

      Hey, excellent advice from a pro lineman--I Love it! Thank you for your feedback and support. This was my first pole-rising, and I'm still awaiting my 2nd opportunity. The best part about this pole is my neighbor had an extra, and gave this one to me for 'free' ... we dragged it across the field from his place to mine, lol. It pays to be friendly and neighborly. Thanks again, Brotha!
