  • A new Got Milk? ad campaign starring Queen Latifah was released last week, marking the latest celebrity Big Dairy partnership. In this video we'll discuss the ad and compare it to Aubrey Plaza's campaign from earlier this year. I discuss why, in many ways, I think the new Queen Latifah ad is even more problematic than Aubrey's. Do you agree?

    most people i know my age and younger don't even like snl these days, idk why they would think that style would connect well. it's just disingenuous and cringe. thank you for your thoughts!!
    just wanted to clarify one thing-- latinx ppl are not necessarily POC. latinx folks can be any race, and aubrey definitely falls into the category of white latina. just want this to be more widely understood as a white latine myself-- many of us do not face the obstacles encountered by POC, and do experience the privileges of whiteness. different groups have been accepted into whiteness at different times (italian and irish ppl were not white once), and i can say that light-skinned latinx and hispanic folks operate pretty comfortably in the arena in this day. (which is not to say that white latinx individuals don't ever experience prejudice, just that if you look like aubrey plaza you're prob not randomly getting pulled over for a traffic stop in the u.s. or any latin american country, where BIPOC still shoulder the majority of the systemic discrimination). race and ethnicity in latin america is super complex and whiteness is a socially constructed monster ideology that is ever-evolving lol. just hoping to add some nuance, not trying to start anything!

      Thank you for clarifying this, and I’m sorry for having misspoken on the topic. It certainly is a nuanced issue and maybe I’m assigning meaning where there is none. I still do wonder if it was intentional; if her ethnicity was a part of the appeal of casting her. I’m not sure if she is considered a big part of the latinx community, but I wonder if MilkPEP were still hoping to appeal to latinx POCs in casting her.

      MilkPep? Latin (with an x it won't even let me type it), Bipoc? Poc? I literally have no idea what this conversation is about. I thought I speak English but....

    • @HidingFromFate

      POC = people of color. Not sure about BIPOC though (bisexual POC, maybe?). I'm sure a google search would have yielded the answer quicker for both of us than typing out our responses here. 😉 Speaking of which, after said search, turns out that BIPOC = black indigenous people of color.
      But I think I get your general gist. Just when I catch up with a few terms constantly being thrown about online, i.e., incel, gaslighting, tankie, cis male/female, etc., I encounter several other ones which everyone online seems to know but me. 😝 @@KerriEverlasting

      How could Latinx people be any race if you're classifying them as Latinx?

    Really sad that @QueenLatifah got suckered into promoting animal abuse.

      Yes, I can't think of a single reason for her to do this, other than: easy and enormous payday. Which goes back to what I said about Aubrey: that I suspected this was possibly the biggest payday of her career.

      "On the average, only those prisoners could keep alive who, after years of trekking from camp to camp, had lost all scruples in their fight for existence; they were prepared to use every means, honest and otherwise, even brutal force, theft, and betrayal of their friends, in order to save themselves. We who have come back, by the aid of many lucky chances or miracles - whatever one may choose to call them - we know: the best of us did not return."
      Viktor E. Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning.
      For contrast, look up Stephen King's "guys like us" quote.
      It does provide the perspective from the other point of view.

    Yes I agree with all your points on this Queen Latifah ad being even more manipulative than the Aubrey Plaza ad. I was just googling to find out more and came across an anti-dairy campaign called Switch4Good. Are you familiar with this? Not sure if you’ve already mentioned them in one of your videos. They seem to use similar techniques, like a billboard saying “9 out of 10 serial killers grew up drinking milk.” Is it possible that Ok2Milk is partly a ripoff of Switch4Good?

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  5 місяців тому +4

      I hadn’t heard of them but thank you for bringing it to my attention! And wow, Ok2Milk certainly seems like it could be a rip-off/riff on Switch4Good. I see that it was started by Olympic athlete Dotsie Bausch in response to Big Dairy’s infiltration of the elite sports world. I’ll have to look more into it!!

    A few more points that I didn’t make or had to cut:
    -interesting that dairy marketing is now fully leaning into “we’re underdogs” instead of trying to deny it. It’s as much of an admission of defeat as I think we’ve ever seen from them.
    -I never found Kelis’s “ok2milk” ad but it turns out she’s been partnering with the dairy industry for years, which isn’t too surprising when you consider the success of “Milkshake”--clearly Big Dairy made that connection early on. She did an ad for Lactaid a few years ago where the main thrust of the ad is that she’s lactose intolerant.

      Interesting point about them trying to be the underdogs. That might work against them in the long run. It's bound to spark up some discussions about why people are ditching dairy.

      On the plus side, it IS impressive to see an American drive manual transmission… even if only briefly.
      Kudos to Kelis for the driving… sadly not for the advert.

      As I explained in this video and the Aubrey Plaza one, “Big Dairy” is a colloquial term to refer to the dairy industry in the US, centered around the National Dairy Checkoff, or Dairy Promotion Program. “Big” usually implies that there is one central organization at the center, which, in the case of dairy, is true. I agree that “Big X” can be misused or sensationalized, but in this case it captures the essence of one central organization controlling much of the industry and public perception, as laid out in my Aubrey Plaza video. As I also explained in that video, these organizations go by many different names, in my opinion to confuse and mislead the public, so referring to them all under one umbrella term makes the most sense to me.

    Humans are the only species on earth that drink milk from another lactating species. That aside, good point about the contradiction of attacking "milk shamers" then shaming cheese eaters. Has there been an Asian speaking out on dairy shaming yet? Who called this a PSO?

    Someone should make "got milk" parody ads in the same style as these, but with a bunch of farming cruelty in the background that the characters are just ignoring, trying to shift the focus away from, or casually taking part in.
    Pull back the curtain and show people what these ads are actually supporting.
    (I mean: using existing footage of cruelty or just having some implied cruelty happening off-screen, because harming animals to make such ads would kinda defeat the point.)

    i think the ads are objectively creative, but they certainly won't influence people to start drinking milk. they are just going to convince the same people that soundboard that it is "weak" to be vegan or make personal choices for your health. basically, milk sales have declined because parents were convinced of health benefits and forced their children to drink milk, and those children grew up to make their own purchasing decisions.

    • @TotallyForkable
      @TotallyForkable  5 місяців тому

      Yes I think you're right that it will serve as confirmation bias for milk-drinkers, but won't draw in many (if any) new "fans."
