I wrap a frozen water bottle in a pillow case whenever it's hot and they usually ignore it. But this week I caught them both laying next to it, they must have reached their limits. Pedro is so cute 😍
My sister uses a water bottle and wraps a tea towel around it. They don't snuggle up too it but they lie close every now and then. I've air-cond so I don't have that problem myself.
My heart absolutely aches for those over in the UK that have lost piggies during that heatwave. We're having quite the heatwave here in my area of the US as well but I was definitely prepared. I have multiple fans running along with my air conditioning. I have an entire shelf in my freezer that is frozen water bottles and I have had to use them for both my piggies and for my chickens. I have a temperature gauge for both piggy cages and definitely check it often. I'm heat intolerant because of one of my medications, so I do everything I can to keep my house between 65*F and 70*F.
My piggies love frozen ice packs wrapped in a dishtowel when it's hot! We use smaller ones meant for lunch boxes and each piggie gets one. They love to lie next to them (one loves to lie ON TOP of it, like a throne. lol.).
We have many hot days in Australia. Rather than leaning against a frozen drink bottle, I’ve found that piggies love to lie on a flat ice pack wrapped in fabric. This is similar to the tile idea.
I used a towel to shade the end of the cage that was nearest to the window and put a bowl of water as their own air cooler. Also, when I had them out for lap time, I had them on a towel with resealable bag of ice under it. Cookie seemed to love it as he relaxed as soon as I put him on it.
We do use the frozen water bottle tucked under the liner and at first they didn't use it but after having it in their cage more often they did suss it out and now they do lie up against it.. But now we use the gel packs you freeze or heat and either put them under the liner with a log hidey over the top or wrap them in a tea towel... They love lying on those because they are soft. You need to get the ones that don't go hard when frozen, they are used for us humans if we have an injury. They definitely work a treat 😁😁 also we did give them a little bit of cool water in the bathroom sink, they weren't too sure at first but they did lie down in it as they were panting and that so helped cool them down, they weren't in there for very long and we put some water over their backs and on their ears too. That cooled down fairly quickly. 😁😁
Two piggies send compliments from Ireland, we've kind of had a heat wave with no heat 😅 like 24' so piggies stayed in their room and in their cage (fully inspired with your cage!) and only being outside on the evening :)
I live in the south and my room gets pretty hot, back when I had a hamster I’d put a ceramic coaster in the refrigerator and then put it in his enclosure, I also put his cage near the air vent, I’ll do the same for the Guinea pigs I’m getting but instead of a coaster I’ll use a ceramic tile
Here in Australia i have found what works best for my piggys is 150mm joiners ( T shape, Y shape etc ) pvc pipe with a frozen bottle at one end. Piggys lye at the other end of joiner. They have discovered a slight breeze goes through the pipe, air having gone over the frozen bottle and through the joiners.
I loved your sheep guardian but that wily cheeky Phoebe just bulldozed past him. Their little bums are so cute as they putter about their temporary area
I’ve seen a lot of people recommend terra-cotta pots to keep small animals cool. For some of my animals (prairie dogs I’m look at you) they just used it as a toilet. So I keep them in the fridge when I know it’s going to be hot. Then I can put them in the cage and they’ll be even colder.
Gosh yeah, it was so hot in the Netherlands as well 🥵 I did put cooling elements in wash cloth into their cage and after figuring out what it was (for), they loved lying on it. I also gave them watermelon to keep them hydrated. I wasn't home all day, so I wanted to make sure they drank something. It's gonna be hot next week as well, so your tips and warnings are very useful, thanks!! ❤
I recently adopted a piggy from someone who I found out drove him to me in a hot car without AC, and when she dropped him off, he was lethargic and limp. I couldn’t get him in to be seen right away, but followed the vet directions. He showed all the signs of heat stroke. Unfortunately he died two hours later. It was very traumatic and I was literally depressed and in bed for almost a whole day afterward, which sounds silly since I’d just met him… but I felt so guilty for not going up to get him from her home directly. Had I known, I never would have let her drive him. 😭
I think the temperature depends on a few things like humidity. My piggies are happy too run around when it's 32° and under 40% humidity but not when its 9° in 90% humidity. They have never been above 33° as 32 is pretty much the max my husky's can take. Not sure on the low, probably 6°, as I always put a couple of logs on the fire before going too bed. They refuse to go outside under 14°. Also whenever they are outside they are almost always supervised. Only times they aren't are when I make a cuppa or take the dogs out too toilet. I went too the farmers market and got the most enormous lettuce for them. They haven't seen it yet.
My heart goes out to all of you in the UK! So many have lost their piggies! I was so worried about your herd! I'm so glad they are all ok! You are such a good piggy mama!
I’ve got a little special temperature gauge that clips onto the piggies cage and tells you the current temperature, the highest it’s been that day and the lowest, it’s really helpful! Luckily I only saw it go up to 26 degrees Celsius but that’s still so hot for them! Thanks for these tips ❤️My piggies love a cold flannel to lie on 🥰
It has been well over 90 F (32 C) here all week. I have central air thankfully, but even then the humidity hit 90% at times. I spent a lot of time emptying the dehumidifier. I have taken a couple plastic gallon milk jugs and froze water in them. I wrapped them in towels and then made a kind of tent with a large piece of fleece draped between them. I have a little temperature/humidity gauge on the front of each cage, which are C&C variants. Stay safe and stay cool!
It’s going to be 36c/97f here in America in my state, and last year it got up to 115f and my pigs were fine luckily!! Got a fan circulating air and cold water bottles in the cage under an “insulated” area and it cools down quite a bit in there, but for emergencies I can bring them in my room with A/C if I think it’s getting too hot for them
My great Aunts Guinea pig died and we think it was either a heat stroke bc her air conditioner messed up or the drastic change in temprature when her air got fixed. Her piggie was my girlies brother.
Thanks Sarah, that was very helpful and informative. I keep a room thermometer in the piggies’ room which is useful. Have also tried the damp towels and frozen water bottle trick ( my piggies also ignore the water bottle) Roxy was sweet pulling the towel. Love the ‘Sheep 🐑 Guardian’ and Phoebe was hilarious hiding under the sofa! 🤣 x
We always put frozen water bottles wrapped in a tea towel into their cage when it's hot. We also have cold pads with their own covers. They always snuggle up to them, or even just sleep with their paws on them. This time we held back some of their morning veggies and handed them out throughout the morning. I will try the towel trick next time too. Thank you.
Oh you poor things.. Being from Australia these temperatures are common so our piggies chill out inside in the air-conditioning at a nice 20 degrees. Definitely keep your windows and curtains closed this makes a big difference!!
A couple of years ago we had a similar heatwave and I gave all my longhair piggies (2 of them are lunkarya's like Lyra) a short haircut. The piggies were very happy with their new hairstyle but the reaction of my hubby was "You cut all their beautiful hair!!!" so he bought the piggies an airconditioner" 😂 But if you don't have airconditioning you can put 2 fans in opposite corners of a room and place large frozen bottles near them (not as good as airco but it helps). I also put several blue ice elements (the ones you use for a coolbox) and put them in a fluffy washglove you normally use to wash a car. They REALLY love it and use it as a pillow 😃
The damp towel is a great idea! Will have to do that if another heat wave strikes. Can I also ask where you got the guard for your sofa from. I’ve recently started letting my two have free roam of the front room and it would be so useful.
We use air conditioning. If it's 30 or even 40 degrees, a water bottle won't always help. I don't want to take any risks. In Germany it was 39 degrees on Tuesday and the piggies were doing very well with the air conditioning. A very sensible investment for humans and animals.
I totally understand. I live in Florida and thank heavens we have AC. Even with that my two girls are very lethargic during the day. We do not see any reprieve till October.
This video is very helpful! I myself plan to become a guinea pig owner in the near future and i will definitely keep this in mind to try giving my guinea pig a good time and i would recomend trying to put a frozen ziplock inside the pillowcase maby because its flat they would lay on it? love the piggies and hope the heatwave doesn’t afect you that much ❤️ say hello to the piggies for me and have a great day! :)
I sadly lost my two elderly boars guinea pig Charlie (nearly 4) and shadow (nearly 5), to the heat wave the Monday before, we think it was heatstroke even though we gave them cucumber, cool towels and everything it just got too much for them 😔 , I was devastated and cried so much causing myself to nearly overheat! I’m happy they went together though as they were 2 pees in a pod, the happiest of friends so we buried them together with their favourite snack next to their old pal meico (who passed in October), the next day I took the day off school and watched my last 4 like a hawk, I also kept An eye on my giant rabbit, but sadly as the day got hotter so did my rabbit pinto, he started having symptoms of heatstroke, and after an hour of leaving him to cool down after a brush off and giving him countless of tricks to cool him down etc, towel, frozen bottles etc , I found him lying stiff in his favourite spot, after that we buried him with his favorite snack and a note from me in his favorite blankie, next to Charlie and shadow. 😞 😢 I’ve never had a worse 2 days, I’ve cried sooo much, I didn’t expect to loose them especially pinto after 1 and a half years, I really didn’t expect it 😔 I’m doing okay now a few days later with friends and family cheering me up, and still looking after my remaining 4 guinea pigs, but I really miss them and miss giving them all their veggies but I know they’ll have as much as their can eat over the rainbow bridge and I will forever love them and their spirits ❤️❤️❤️ love you Charlie , shadow and pinto forever and always xx 🕊🕊
I'm so sorry for the devastating loss of your boys. Such a difficult time and to have three friends suddenly gone is heart shattering. Prayer song peace and comfort and may memories of Charlie, Shadow & Pinto make you smile
I am glad you all managed it okay! For the first time in my life I live in a house with whole house AC, and I know how fortunate we are (it was 100F/~38C here this last week). I have actually been a little worried that my piggies might be too cool, and made up a quick snuggle bed for them, well, one of them, because neither one of them will share. I have a coronet that is colored very similarly to Pedro, and knowing to cool her ears should temperatures rise is so so so helpful. Thank you! Also, I love the guardian sheep lol
What I did during that horrible heatwave, I had to put the guinea pigs downstirs, gave them frozeen bottle of water to lie against, lots of vegetables from the fridge with water in it like cucumber and tomatoes, and they just ate and slept a lot. It was really difficult for all of us ( i m not used tothese tmparatures either and felt like I was dying dudfif) but at least they are ok, they didn t get any heatstroke so I m thanksful for that. Just before the heatwave hit I cut their very log hair super short too iufhdsjsd
I live in the southern part of the United States and it can get this hot every summer. It can be miserable and I make sure the piggies are in a nice air conditioned space always
Awe poor guinea pigs. You are so caring to your guinea pigs and inspired me to have my own! This helped me so much. I hope it cools down At your place! (The sheep guard is such a good idea!)❤️❤️❤️*also my guinea pigs are coming with me and we are travelling on road and I need some tips on travelling with guinea pigs*
great advice, you did the right things, here in Australia,{im in Victoria,} , we can get a couple of 30c to 40c days in arow, then it can go so much higher ,i find a covered freezer block, [that you put with your shopping], great for them to lay on, even over night and a fan as well,, LOVE all your videos and my piggies love to hear ur brood squeak oxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
So glad to hear that your piggies did ok in the heat. We heard about the horrible heat wave you were having in the UK, and I was concerned about you and your herd doing alright in such heat. Great information to great out due to the hotter and hotter summers.
These are great ideas to keep your guinea pig cool on a hot day. Thank you I have been watching your videos and I really am appreciative of the advice. My daughter 's guinea pig s'more loves hearing your guinea pigs weeking in the videos and gets excited when we play them.😊
I’m in the US and I’m using Hello Fresh ice packs in towels as piggie AC units. I also have a box fan outside the cage and little lunchbox ice packs in socks all around the cage. Unfortunately my studio apartment is in a really old building on the second floor with bad AC.
Thank you for sharing this extremely important info. It is critical to keep them cool. I put extra water bottles in the frig and keep changing them out on really hot days - they seem to really enjoy the colder water. I also put a fan on the floor, several feet away from their area, and then put a pitcher of ice in front of the fan - it works really well in cooling their area down.
Absolutely love your videos! 😊 you seem 100% genuine and lovely, the vids are packed with useful info, the "subtitles" are hilarious 🤣 And the way you say "piggiiiiies" just puts a smile on my face every time 😊😊😊 keep up the good work, seen many guinea channels but you are definitely no.1 😊💪👍
Thank you so much I'm going to get guinea pigs in 1 week, And august is the hottest month where I live, so this would help my guinea pigs a lot thank you so much.
It's like that in Toronto all the time. I have ac in my bedroom and in my rabbit room. Theirs runs 24/7 for much of the summer. Even our night temps have been 25-31c
Awesome video with great tips,👍 I did exactly the same as you - moved them to coolest room downstairs, tile, damp towels, wicker tunnels, closed windows n blinds, fan etc, I just used cotton socks for my small frozen bottles which they seemed to ignore. My trio always have a bowl of water as well as the bottle. Spot cleaned early morning then left them be as I didn't want to be the cause of running around. Room still reached 27c. We all thankfully survived.
Another great video! Thank you and keep up the good work 👏 my piggies struggled with heat too. I wrapped up some refreezable ice packs in a teatowel for them and they loved to lay on them. I also got some small cool mats to go under their log bridge which they sprawled out on. Hopefully we don't have that crazy heat again 🥵
I soo as my mom gets home from work where gonna go pick a girl piggy and i cant wait we have a boy already ( cricket and tilly) and im buying a new cage off amazon😁😁. Idk y but im sooo excited
Wish me luck. One of my piggies is unwell with a (most likely) overgrown tooth :( He needs an x ray but he's too bloated at the moment. Thanks to this channel, I have an idea what might be wrong so that gives me some piece of mind Update; my boy passed away
Hi Sarah! Love the video! (Obv.) And I might get guinea pigs in the next 2 - 4 years! (Im so exited :) ) It will be long until I have the money for it XD, but otherwise Idk where I would be without your videos, (I mean I would put them in hamster wheels, probably pet store cage, not feed hay) but luckily I learnt how to treat them! But one question: - What should I feed guinea pigs for Breakfast, I was going to plan on feeding herbs, but they should only be 2 - 3 times a week fed. What do you feed? Otherwise have a great day! (And sorry for the long comment) ~Beatrise
Hi Beatrise, I hope you continue to love them - I'm sure you'll make such a fabulous guinea pig owner! And it depends on the herbs, some should be fed more sparingly, some are good for most days. Coriander/Cilantro is a great one for more frequent use. I'd suggest splitting they daily veggies into two sittings, so in the morning you could give 2 or 3 different veg, just small pieces, along with their daily amount of pellets and lots of fresh hay in the cage :)
Amazing video ! A bit irrelevant, but any advice for my piggies who have suddenly stopped wanting to come out their hidies? Even when I rattle their food (which they used to get very excited at) they stare at me blankly as if they can't be bothered anymore. This has been happening since we upgraded from a pet shop cage to a diy ikea one, which I assumed would encourage them to explore but in reality it hasn't. Any tips on how to help them ?
As u mentioned frozen bottles is it okay to give em frozen water as we put some water in the bottle and let it freeze and then add some regular water to make it melt and give to the gps or is it also safe to give em ice cubes
Hey ! This morning I woke up and checked on my piggies, and my one guinea pig Monica was limping, and was holding one foot up in the air when she walked. I am currently having floor time with them, and 7 hours later she is still limping. I'd assume this is nothing to be concerned about, but I wanted to check whether I should be looking further into this ?
Hello, i know this isn’t the right video to ask but i have a question, me and my wife are first time guinea pig owners and bought two guinea pigs from petsmart from different containers, we brought em home and instantly they started fighting so we had to take one of them back, i noticed the guinea pig that was more chill had a tendency to slowly walk backwards and wiggle his butt left to right, as if he was a cat and was ready to pounce, what could this movement or behavior mean? And is this normal?
I wrap a frozen water bottle in a pillow case whenever it's hot and they usually ignore it. But this week I caught them both laying next to it, they must have reached their limits. Pedro is so cute 😍

I still don't have a piggie, but I find them adorable
I live in the southern part of the United States and it can get this hot every summer. It can be miserable and I make sure the piggies are in a nice air conditioned space always
I know the UK was so hot!!!🥵my pig got lots of fresh water and grass he was so happy he also had lots of shade too
Awe poor guinea pigs.
He is officially sheep guard on a box now. Phoebe is so clever she eventually gets past everything! 😆
my guinea pigs love the frozen bottles! I use small ones, I also use ice packs and my piggies lay on them.
great advice, you did the right things, here in Australia,{im in Victoria,} , we can get a couple of 30c to 40c days in arow, then it can go so much higher ,i find a covered freezer block, [that you put with your shopping], great for them to lay on, even over night and a fan as well,, LOVE all your videos and my piggies love to hear ur brood squeak oxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
I but cool box blocks in sox ..frozen water bottles had a fan ...we got through it just xx
So glad to hear that your piggies did ok in the heat. We heard about the horrible heat wave you were having in the UK, and I was concerned about you and your herd doing alright in such heat. Great information to great out due to the hotter and hotter summers.
some people loved t, it just lapped up the half days for school lol
So many great tips! It was good to see where you might add damp towels to the cage. & The sheep guardian was like a mini story within the video! 😄🐑
These are great ideas to keep your guinea pig cool on a hot day. Thank you I have been watching your videos and I really am appreciative of the advice. My daughter 's guinea pig s'more loves hearing your guinea pigs weeking in the videos and gets excited when we play them.😊
Lol love the sheep guardian!
I’m in the US and I’m using Hello Fresh ice packs in towels as piggie AC units. I also have a box fan outside the cage and little lunchbox ice packs in socks all around the cage. Unfortunately my studio apartment is in a really old building on the second floor with bad AC.
OMG 40 degrees 💀. Thank you for the helpful tips! We are glad to hear that you were able to keep your piggies cool and comfy ☺🙌🏼
By the way your my favorite UA-cam channel your so nice, kind and vary helpful thank you so much.
I didn't know you are from UK!.Great Britain? London? Whatever you're so lucky. I'm so much jealous! Aaaaa!Buhuuuu!🥵
Absolutely love your videos! 😊 you seem 100% genuine and lovely, the vids are packed with useful info, the "subtitles" are hilarious 🤣 And the way you say "piggiiiiies" just puts a smile on my face every time 😊😊😊 keep up the good work, seen many guinea channels but you are definitely no.1 😊💪👍
I have Guinea pigs too I have about 11 and 3 babies and we've kept them up undercover because of all the rain and the cold weather.
Thank you for putting this information up. Learned a lot 😊
I use a sheep gaurdion also😂
I have been wanting to wach you bids
That is so funny! Did you try putting a fan in their room?
I was waiting for you to upload and you just made my day I love your guinea pigs they’re so cute and I will definitely be using your tips thank you
Its been 33/39 here since June. Mine have a fan 24/7 and frozen water bottles. They love lying next to the bottles
Love the video you’re piggies are so lucky to have such a caring mother ❤️❤️❤️
Poor little guinea pigs bet they hated the heat
I'm from u.s. and my state has been up in the 90's close to 100 and I had to move my two fur babies from my to the living room with the a/c
It's been disgustingly hot where I live so I've had the AC on quite alot. Stay cool everyone
I am in spane and it is normally hotter but Tuesday was atchlly collided so I missed the heat
Thanks to this channel, I have an idea what might be wrong so that gives me some piece of mind
Update; my boy passed away
Good luck, I hope your piggy feels better very soon x
They're so cute
I closed curtains ,and put coooling mats in my piggies cage I was so worried about them with the heat
Sara ,the liners have to change for summer cloth ? ..we are in winter here in Argentina but this is a good tip for whats coming this summer .
But one question:
- What should I feed guinea pigs for Breakfast, I was going to plan on feeding herbs, but they should only be 2 - 3 times a week fed. What do you feed?
Otherwise have a great day! (And sorry for the long comment)
~Beatrise
I unfortunately only have plastic houses :(
Lettuce moustache ftw
As u mentioned frozen bottles is it okay to give em frozen water as we put some water in the bottle and let it freeze and then add some regular water to make it melt and give to the gps or is it also safe to give em ice cubes
I have a crush on Pedro....
Hiiiii
Any I have a question
Up here it's just been writing a lot.
Hi! Do you know if I could put crushed up ice in my Guniea pigs water bottle?
YAY! EARLY!♥️
Where did u buy ur cage
I’m so worried about your Guinea pigs
i love all your videos but i cant aford to buy all the stuff that you have
How are you so 🤩
