Modern Living in a Small Family Home

  • With the drastic increase in house prices in Australia, many have been encouraged to explore alternative living arrangements. Multigenerational living, where families come together to share resources is becoming more popular and we are seeing tiny houses, and small accessory dwelling units starting to become common place.

    Commonly called a granny flat in Australia, an accessory dwelling unit up to 60 square meter (646 sqft) is allowed by the councils in many regions. This young family, not wanting to become overburdened with a high mortgage and wishing to be closer to family, capitalised on this by constructing a spectacular small home in their parents back yard.

    The home’s design was taken on by a friend of the family, designer Nicholas Gurney (www.nicholasgurney.com.au) who wanted to construct a home that was modern, high functioning and which would effectively make the most of the home’s small footprint.

    I think this is the sweet spot between tiny homes which can feel claustrophobic and modern, enormous houses which are just excessive for most families. A home like this that is thoughtfully designed with an open layout, efficient insulation, and large enough bedrooms and bathroom is very comfortable and will not make you house poor. I hope this size of home becomes the new trend.

    My 3 children and I stayed with my parents a lot of their younger years. The benefits of grandchildren having their grandparents around is amazing. They have an unbreakable bond with their grandparents and have the deepest respect for the older generations.

    I hope you all enjoy this weeks episode. I'm a huge fan of multigenerational living. Yes, it helps to reduce costs through the sharing of resources, but most importantly, I love the way that it brings families together. I’m 39 & I live with 1 of my older sisters & my mother in her late 70’s. None of us could live in a home as nice as the 1 we’re in now, if we lived alone. We’re all on a pension so aside from the money & the love, there’s also always someone who’s well enough to take care of the others who might not be

      Living Big In A Tiny House Bryce, multigenerational living is big in Chile and I assume in many parts of latin America. The blocks are smaller so virtually no back yard but usually 3 generations living on the same property, if not an aunt and uncle. This clearly because of financial problems but it supports the close knit customs of South Americans. When we travel to Santiago, we live in one of the poorer suburbs called Cerro Navia, that was originally created by squatters in the pre Pinochet communist days. Some of the friendliest prople and families live there.
      Our family house is no different. House at the front and a 4 room hut built directly behind the house takes up the back yard. The advantage of less council red tape.

    One of the most important aspects of tiny house living is to be able to breathe, as in, one shouldn't feel cramped up. This house was just about perfect in utilisation of space. Everything fit in well, the kitchen was lovely. I loved their drawing room, it looked so sleek, modern, minimal and LARGE. I really appreciate that their bedroom was a little bigger than we've now gotten used to seeing and it was refreshing.
    BRYCE, this year you've put out one amazing video after another, there's not even an iota of similarity in the kind of homes we've seen in 2019.
    THANK YOU FOR REINVENTING as a youtuber, because most people's content gets stagnant at some point. You've broadened your horizon by visiting homes that are not attached with wheels, as I believe tiny homes (permanently) on land are equally important.

    A sort of funny thing that is happening is that we were so caught up in 'the bigger the better' that we didn't realize we passed our peak and are now coming back down to were we needed to stop. families are sharing beds, there are smaller homes, and families share lots. Which is what we used to do but now think is weird, wrong, and for the poor. so I am really happy seeing normal people do those things.
    PS sorry if this doesn't make much sense.

    • @mercynamikoye9084
      @mercynamikoye9084 5 років тому +26

      Makes loads of sense. In Africa even if you have a mansion mist kids share rooms just because its more social and fun. And most families have mostly two or thee bedroom houses and maybe on average 5 kids so you definitely learn to share and its not a big deal at even for teenagers and adults. You just learn moral respect in sharing space.

      All these “Mc Mansions” and big Hines that just waste space. It makes so much sense. I feel especially with technology we are in a time where there is a lot of separation. When we need to go back to simple sized homes and families sharing quality time together

    • @nadinekonig5622

      Makes complete sense. Poor people, and in many cases, people in what we call developing countries across the world over, live in small spaces, live amongst generation of family members, etc. Wealthy countries used to live like that too, but as those countries grew wealthy, they migrated to larger homes. But the pendulum swung so far, that it all became too expensive, overpriced, and cramped-cramped not in a good way. People are now going backwards. But I'm afraid, like this house here that is so small but costing $240,000.00 (168,000.00 USD). That's not worth it to me. You can buy a house in Florida for that price, for example.

    • @brianrundle2875
      @brianrundle2875 5 років тому +4

      polished concrete is a very hard surface. if you drop something it breaks, child falls he gets hurt, sounds echo, it is stingy cold on the feet, moisture condenses on it causing slipperiness and mould. better to use a vinyl plank finish or even timber or carpet. ..ex flooring contractor.

    • @jeffmathers355
      @jeffmathers355 5 років тому +6

      @@brianrundle2875 sounds like it's not for you. I prefer it for the way it looks, the way it connects me more to the building's components and because it saves materials. It's no more hazardous to person or property than tile (which I personally don't like), and area rugs can help dampen echo. Condensation on any surface of your home indicates significant air leakage and/or an improperly sized HVAC system. Excess moisture will cause mold regardless of the chosen floor, but wall-to-wall carpet will hide it.

    Like it a lot!
    In the Netherlands we actually call houses in de backyard kangaroo homes, but they are usually only allowed for maximum 10 years (as a way to care for elderly parents). So we opted for buying a bigger house with the 4 of us and split it in 2. So we technically live in 1 house but have separate spaces.

    Bryce. One of your best ever. I hate these narrow things on wasteful wheels with ladders leading to tiny lofts. The roof which drains to the middle and eliminates overhangs is brilliant. Lots of fine custom cabinetwork and expensive materials. Cost seems reasonable for east coast USA. Custom houses here typically go for $250/sf. A++for the architect. I do agree that there is an overwhelming expanse of natural wood inside and a lack of personal decor.

    Hi Bryce, I really love your channel! Seeing all those tiny houses for some reason makes me feel very happy. I have learned from that to appreciate my own home SO MUCH more! We are a family of 4 living in Germany in a 60 sqm apartment and we started to feel squeezed in. From all tiny houses I've seen on your lovely channel I have really learned that it isn't the space that makes you feel squeezed in but it's the amount of things that one owns.
    And I just enjoy very much how positive you speak 😍

I'm from Europe and bought a holidays house in Florida in 2016, it's in a town considerate the ''millionaire's town'' (Windermere) where services are impeccable, in a gated community with lakes, the house is a mansion (5000 sqf) with an amazing paradise looking pool, double ceilings in living room and dinning room, 5 ensuite bedrooms, master with huge closet, high ceilings and private terrace and siting in a huge plot. I payed 750k. Paying 250k for a box house with no plot only one decent bedroom and one bathroom sounds ridiculous to me. I would never.

    Beautiful Tiny Home, my only concern is the pitched roof that runs to the center, in a Torrential down pour of rain the water could pool above the level of the center gutter and overflow water into the ceiling. Nick if you are reading this can you tell me how you have mitigated this risk?
