Something I like about the new canon is Luke definitely getting better, but still having ups and downs in his journey. I think it’s cool and relatable to see him learning and stumbling as he becomes a better Jedi Master

Yes! The nice thing about Luke as a hero is that you watch him stumble and grapple with doing what is right and what right even is. It's a great example that you don't have to be perfect to do something good, and that even once you do a good thing, you still have to actively choose to continue to do good, it doesn't just happen.

I like sad and broken Luke from Last Jedi. I will never understand why so many people reacted so negatively to his character arc in the sequels. Even with crazy Force powers and the will to do good, he’s still only human. And he did some studying up on what really happened during the Clone Wars. What other conclusion could he draw after learning what kind of sketchy stuff his own masters were involved with during those wars? Not to mention his own failures. The Jedi had to end. I loved that he got to spend some time speaking with Ahsoka. It’s only fitting that she would be the first one to plant a seed of doubt in his head. Wish we could have seen that conversation. Hopefully more are to come in her series.

It seems the main question this arc asks of the characters is “Are you going to invest in the future or will you fall back to what you are used to”
    - Boba could have gone back to bounty hunting.
    - Grogu could have gone back to being a padawan.
    - Fennic, Krrsantan & the mods could have going back to paid assassinations, fighting for money & being scum.
    - Din on the other hand did go back to bounty hunting & the children of the watch sect.

I agree with all your points except Grogu's because IMO returning to Mando is falling back unlike Boba or his entourage. Even though he's technically been a padawan for the majority of his life, I think they would have made it way more clear that Grogu enjoyed and was more comfortable/used to Jedi training if they wanted to make this parallel.
Given between returning to Mando or becoming a padawan, I don't see how returning to Mando was the better decision for the future. Luke even makes the point that "a small time for you is a lifetime for others", meaning he would be better off letting go now since he will inevitably outlive everyone he becomes attached to in the current timeline. His decision seems more aligned with Din's all things considered.

I feel that everyone misses what Lukes really says in his speech to Grogu : he does not say "you shouldn't be attached, it's bad to love", he says "with your training and your duties, you won't be able to maintain this attachment" (I'm paraphrasing). He does not tell that following Mando is bad, he says it will be incompatible. For me it is a much more logical exposition of this choice, and way more balanced than the way the old jedi presented it (love leads to pain, thus it is bad).

@@emperorholocron8278 I don't think so. That conversation is prefaced by him explaining that Grogu is live lifetimes longer than the average person. I know people like everything to be spelled out but I really think this is Luke making sure Grogu knows that staying to train means he may never see Din again based on this. Grogu could train for 50 years, be ready to venture out into the galaxy, and decide to look for Din only to discover he's gone. I also think he is telling Grogu that, because of this unique aspect of his species, he has time to train later. If you train a youngling for anywhere from 10-15 years before they're a Padawan then that gives them 20-30 of training during their prime. If younglings were brought in at age 10-15 instead of age 5, then you're losing about 30% of their Jedi lifespan, so to speak. Grogu doesn't have this problem he can stay with Din for 30-50 years, train as a Jedi for another 50-100 years, and then still be in his prime for 300 years. I think this gets to the core of why Luke didn't push Grogu to stay and train like he may have another student. I also think this is why he fails Kylo, but that's another discussion

  • @saviorselfX29

I don’t understand the controversy over Luke giving Grogu a choice: he provided Grogu an off-ramp, a permission structure to follow his heart rather than continue along a path his heart was no longer set on.
The tragedy of Anakin Skywalker isn’t that the Jedi Order’s non-attachment policy existed; it’s that Anakin never had a real choice to pursue what he wanted AND BE ACCEPTED. He was the Chosen One, destined to be a Jedi; how could he have ever turned down that responsibility? So he had to hide his attachments until they destroyed him.
Imagine if Yoda or Obi-wan or Mace had been perceptive enough to see where Anakin’s heart truly was and had given him permission to step away on his own terms. How might things have turned out differently?

    • @Lord-of-D
      @Lord-of-D 2 місяці тому

I think he always had that permission. The Force and the Jedi are always about choice. The issue was that to do so would be to sacrifice one way of life for another where Anakin(who "knows nothing of greed" yet is described as greedy and possessive by Lucas) wanted to have both. But the Jedi way of life just doesn't allow for that. It's like the difference between being single and devoting your mind solely to God and being married and devoting your mind to the needs of your spouse and children while *making time* to observe God's will. Both are valid, both have their rewards, and both will have you tied and freed up in different ways that just won't mesh.
That said, the latest Mace Windu novel "The Glass Abyss" shows us that, against all fandom and Filoni-fueled expectations, Mace would have actually been in the best position to counsel Anakin on his issues and desires, if only Anakin hadn't had something to prove - let alone having Palpatine in his ear.

I do not think Luke’s question to Grogu was as simple as it may have seemed. Luke needed a way to determine if Grogu was committed to the life of a Jedi.
Luke was trying to answer the question Yoda asked Obi-Wan, “Will he finish what he begins?” Luke has no one to ask, except Grogu himself.
In the end, it seems Grogu made the same decision as Luke did with Yoda. Luke set aside his training to rescue his friends, and those he loved.

On the show's theme of having a "tribe" -- I was totally expecting Luke to personally drop off Grogu to Din at the end of the finale, after the little guy chooses the beskar shirt. Luke would explain how he respects the little one's choice. He'd acknowledge just how important family has been in shaping his own destiny, gesturing at a small "tribe" behind him, as the camera pulls back revealing....Han, Leia, little Ben, Chewie, R2, and 3PO all standing outside the ramp of the Millennium Falcon. Cut to Din and Grogu, before cutting back to a final hero shot, pushing in on the original trilogy cast as the music swells. Cut to black, roll credits. A post-ROTJ shot of the OG cast all together, finally accomplished...in a tie-in series no less!

The way this show tried to include Din, Grogu and Luke reminds me a lot of how ‘Better Call Saul’ introduced an almost entirely separate plotline featuring the cartel side of the Breaking Bad world. This storyline barely crosses over with Saul’s much more low-key lawyer shenanigans (hell, the show runners even once described it as getting two shows for the price of one) but the two worlds are connected through strong thematic or narrative parallels (for instance: Saul and Mike’s moral degradation, or Hector Salamanca and Chuck McGill’s falls from grace etc).
However, I think Better Call Saul interweaves these two plot lines in a much more cohesive and satisfactory manner, as it intercuts between the two regularly rather than just benching one plotline for a whole episode (aside from the occasional episode like Five-O or Chicanery which absolutely warrant the extra focus). It helps a lot with the pacing as it keeps the plotlines in motion, and makes the thematic parallels a lot clearer between the two. It also helps that the cartel storyline evolves quite naturally in scale as Mike slowly goes from small time protection work, to falling in the crosshairs of drug kingpins like Fring and the Salamancas.
What I’m trying to say is that if Book of Boba Fett is going to stick with this more ensemble approach in future, they should probably limit it to Boba’s tribe on Tatooine and go from there. Might help organise the plotlines a bit better in the limited run of episodes that they have.

I do think they should have saved the Luke/Grogu stuff for Mando S3 (or even a new series). It took 2 seasons of Mando trying to return Grogu to his people which was essentially accomplished with an emotional farewell, but then that's all undone/reset inside another character's show before Mando S3.
Boba could have and probably should have been the one to calm the Rancor down seeing as it's supposed to be bonded with him, that didn't need to be given to Grogu. Or better still, Boba uses Slave 1 to destroy the droids instead of riding the Rancor so soon with no time spent training it.
I just think Grogu could have easily sat this one out and then saved his reunion with Din for late into Mando S3 for a far bigger emotional payoff.

I fully admit that it was odd seeing Luke and focusing on him so much in this show. As much as I liked the series and everything that happened with Luke, I can't deny its placement was a little weird but I did see the thematic elements they were going for. Boba is trying to rebuild himself and his tribe, Luke is trying to rebuild the Jedi. Both are trying to move forward in life in new roles. I loved everything with him and Grogu and I think its place in this series might make more sense when Mandalorian S3 comes around.
I have to confess though I have mixed feelings about Luke's stance on attachment in this episode. I get it but it really feels like a lesson he should have already learned given his experiences with Anakin, Leia, Han and so on so it's frustrating to see his character behave this way, even if I can understand why, he's trying to restore the Jedi as they were which is not inherently wrong.
I've made this comparison before but Luke giving Grogu that choice reminds me of the holocron from Jedi: Fallen Order. Cal destroys the holocron at the end of the game and people said it made the story pointless which is just not true if you look at the reasons for doing it. Cal tries to get the holocron because he believes at the time that it's the best thing to do: to find the children and train them but he comes to realize that maybe it isn't because he'd be making that choice for those kids so he destroys the holocron to ensure that they get to make their own choices. It's a very similar thing with Din, Grogu and Luke. Din spent the second season (not the first as I saw some people saying) trying to find a Jedi to train Grogu because he felt that was what was best for him, and maybe it was, at the time but it probably didn't feel like it expected it to for either of them and I think Luke comes to realize the same thing Cal did, it wasn't truly Grogu's choice so he gave him one and Grogu chose Din. None of that negates what happened in The Mandalorian, it's the next step in their relationship and Luke is the catalyst to make that happen. The fact that it happened "so soon" after the S2 finale means nothing because it's the next logical step regardless. I would even say I think Luke pushed Grogu more towards Din by pointing out that a short time for his species is a lifetime for someone else, so the time Grogu would spend with Din is precious. Luke probably had his own thoughts about what was right for Grogu after speaking with Ahsoka and laid it all out for him but leaving Grogu to make the final choice and I think he chose what Luke had in mind

I think Luke is more important to BoBF in ways that you may not have yet realized. I also see far more parallels to Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation”, than Frank Herbert’s “Dune”.
To begin, let’s not lose sight of the fact that all of Star Wars is galactic history being recited to the audience as entries in something known as “The Journal of the Whills.”
The original Foundation trilogy was being recited to the reader as entries in a document known as “Encyclopedia Galactica.”
In Foundation, the fire blasters. Their spaceships use hyperdrives to travel through hyperspace. They even have beings with mental powers that can control the minds of other beings.
The titles of the saga films have always held double meanings, and BoBF seems to be following that tradition. On the surface, it seems to be a Boba Fett back story. As it has unfolded, it seems to be Boba Fett redefining himself to live a cleaner life, “by the book.”
So, why is Luke so important to this “Interlude” in “The Mandalorian” series? Because Luke is just beginning down that same path of redefining himself, as well as the Jedi Order. Luke has once again taken the first steps onto a bigger journey.

I liked your analysis. I had no problem with the overlapping of Din's and Boba's stories. I think the episode with Luke and Grogu was to set us up for Season 3. Although, I noticed that once Din was reunited with Gorgu, he could wield the Darksaber more effectively. So, maybe it was more Din's attachment to Grogu that was the problem for Grogu rather than Grogu's attachment to Din, if that makes sense. I'm not saying Grogu isn't attached to Din, but that their attachment was more of a problem for Din than it was for Grogu. When Luke presented Grogu with the two gifts, his reaction was that he thought he was just being given both and he was going to stay there. He didn't look upset or fearful until Luke presented him with the idea that he may never see Din again if he chose the lightsaber and stayed.

While i do agree with everything you said about the tribes and choosing who you surround (or don't surround) yourself with. I think the show is also at its core about reinvention, about CHOOSING who you are, and what you are above people's expectations of you, and while this is clear in Boba, all the side characters also have that choice. Fennec goes from a lone assassin to Boba's second in command, the Mods and Krrsantan go from being alone working for people who don't care, who mistreat, and who discard them to choosing who they work for, to trusting others and working for a right cause. And chapters 5 and 6 are about those choices in Din and in Grogu, Chapter 5 we follow Din alone without his previous cause and path due to grogu leaving, he falls to his old life, and due to the life he chose through Grogu, his previous life is no longer fit, we see him struggle to find a new life, struggle to recognize and see the purpose of the Darksaber and his path to Mand'alor, while Grogu is back with him he is starting to re-invent and see this path. And in Chapter 6 we see Grogu struggling with the life he had with Din, and the expectation of his Jedi heritage, and his time with Luke is them realizing that, and giving him the choice of what life to go forward with.
While it is not so evident at times, every character goes through the path of choosing the life they live and reinventing themselves. Boba is the central one but everyone surrounding him has a similar experience thanks to the ripple effects of the Life Boba is building... I still think this could have been handled better given more time (and seeing it in their own shows), but I still recognize how all stories have that central theme of destiny and choice connecting them all to the main arc and main plot line.

Luke had to stop his training and he was told his training would end if he went off to save his love ones. That's what I think happened here. He's a new Jedi trying to bring a new meaning to the force, it could even be possible that he's continuing his teaching with the kid through the force. Seeing as Luke is pretty good at reaching out to others through the force. He's a teacher doing his best, but hey I might be wrong about all of that. Who knows. Force choke is generally seen as a “dark side ability”. I tend to take the philosophy of the Jedi Academy in the video games which was that abilities aren’t inherently good or bad, what matters more is your intent in using them. I agree with you. I think the reason why "Force choke" is seen as a Dark Side-coded skill is because it's a particularly cruel way of putting an opponent down. They struggle and suffer before dying or passing out, vs. being quickly and more mercifully killed by a well-placed lightsaber stroke, or being subdued by knocking them unconscious. (Which, well, dealing out a concussion is just as or more dangerous than asphyxiation, but I'm talking in terms of common fictional on-screen means of taking somebody out.) That said, it makes sense for a Force-strong kid to jump to doing something like Force choke because when kids are upset they're not going to automatically consider more thoughtful means of lashing out - Grogu would have been angry that Din was being "hurt" by a "big meanie" and feel the childish urge to retaliate in equally mean fashion. Now, funnily enough, with him having put the rancor to sleep, he could potentially use THAT method to deal with possible threats instead of resorting to something more violent.

@@threadsketch7267 Right, but this was about intent. To harm vs to protect. Sometimes protection for others comes at the expense of "harming" the person you are trying to protect FROM. I suppose one of the reasons for the fall of Luke's academy is the lack of family for both him and Ben. Would Ben have been in a much better place mentally if he could have seen him mother and father more? Would Luke dealt with Ben's growing darkness better if he could have talked to Leia about it? I think that having support around Luke while he tried to rebuild the Jedi Order would have taken some of the pressure off him that he feels about being the mythical person "Luke Skywalker". So bringing it back to the video thesis, Luke and Ben didn't have their tribe and it cost them everything.

Grogu's choice get's so much better if you read the 20st issue of the main Star Wars comic run.
    Spoiler:
In this comic Luke has some kind of a vision where Jedi Master Elzar Mann tells him that he isn't responsible for rebuilding the Jedi Order. He can, if he wants to, but he is not obliged to do it. He can choose to not be a Jedi.
Luke did chose to be a Jedi, but Grogo made another decision.
And the fact that The Book of Boba Fett Chapter 6 and this comic came out almost contemporary makes it so much better.
