Obi-Wan’s second lightsaber was similar in design to his first one, which he lost in his first encounter with Darth Maul. He lost his replacement in the battle of geonosis, hence the reason for a third one. By all means Yoda could have constructed a second one similar in design to aid in his survival in the wilderness of Dagobah.

I'm just taking this as canonisation of what Matt Martin from Lucasfilm suggested a while back; that Yoda simply owned multiple lightsabers in his life. That was my almost immediate thought, even though I was aware it was destroyed in the Vader comic. Hell, that moment in the comic made me emotional but it's also not impossible that Yoda built another during his time on Dagobah. That's pretty easy to assume, he had the time on his hands. I like how the "funnel" is all to do with Yoda that's a nice touch lol and the specific mention of "his *treasured* lightsaber", way to bury the lead there, Alex😂
Something else to add, another comic has him hunting animals for food on the planet and in his head, he's saying that he will not use a lightsaber for this purpose as it would dishonour the weapon, instead he uses a bow and arrow he keeps in a pouch but that implies that he has a lightsaber that he could use. He just chooses not to and there's nothing about Yoda's character arc that says he couldn't just have a lightsaber lying around in the hut. Honestly this was one of the easiest "contradictions" to recouncile when it happened. Nowhere does it say that the lightsaber presented to Grogu is the one used to fight Count Dooku or Darth Sidious in the prequels. As cool as it would be for it to be the same one, the point is Luke is offering A lightsaber that belonged to Yoda to Grogu, that's the significant character point for the story and what we should be focused on.

    • @eladpress1440
      @eladpress1440 2 роки тому

I don't really like the idea of Yoda having multiple lightsabers, as a lightsaber is a jedi's most precious (and one of the only) possession, he doesn't just create lightsabers because he wants to. He has a lightsaber and will continue to use it until he can't. This suggestion that he made multiple lightsabers also makes me uncomfortable because it feels similar to Palpatine having multiple lightsabers just hanging around (don't remember where I read that) and he has multiple sabers, and we know that Palpatine doesn't really respect the lightsaber and thinks of it as an unnecessary weapon in comparison to the force.

    • @taitano12
      @taitano12 2 роки тому +2

@@eladpress1440 There is NOTHING in canon to suggest that a Jedi only ever owned just one Light Saber. In fact, it explains how they get a new one by the next mission. It's not like you can get one at the nearest cutlery shop.
Although, you might be able to get a cheap knockoff like with swords IRL... Maybe that's where younglings get their practice sabers before their field trip to Illam.

Really great elaboration on a fundamental struggle we often have as a fandom. Star Wars (perhaps thanks to its stress on "canon" vs. "legends") has constantly tested our sort of biases towards mutual exclusivity and difficulty in holding conflicting concepts together, and it severely limits our ability to accept some of the most important character developments of the show. Can Mas Amedda have burned Yoda's lightsaber in the comics? Yes. Can Luke also have Yoda's lightsaber two decades later? Yes.
Boba Fett is himself another great example that I see some folks (though not most around me) struggling with. Can he be the badass perceived from the OT and in Clone Wars and comics? Yes. Can he also be seeking new meaning and identity and wanting to shed old roles years later after surviving the sarlacc pit? Absolutely. Ditto Luke in the sequel trilogy with all that he's gone through (the journey of whom I'm very excited we'll now get to see).

First time I saw this I was thinking of Luke probably found Yoda's saber since Yoda likely never got it back after his fight with Palpatine. Not only did it not occur to me that Yoda may have actually built another but I actually was unaware of what happened in the comics.
At any rate I can add this to the ever-growing list of Prequel Trilogy redemptions or acknowledgement that these shows are doing. Seriously love how Mando and Book have used all these PT elements and did something good with them, given the zealotry some have in insisting the PT doesn't exist. Yoda's saber being brought back in particular is great as I've seen some people see the idea of Yoda using a saber as inconsistent, hypocritical or retconning.

As eye-rolling as the ‘everyone was related” elements of the Prequels can be, I love how they inform Owen’s reaction to coming across (far as he knows) a droid LIKE Threepio in ANH. He’s like “let me guess what you’re all about.” It always makes me chuckle now, in light of how many times he must have listened to Threepio prattle on about his primary function and how beneath him farm work was over the years before Anakin showed up.

Man, this is such a good explanation of changing lore details like this, good work.
My take on the lightsaber is that Palpatine faked the destruction of the lightsabers, since he wasn’t wanting to waste the crystals, but still put on a show for the public. But then he made sure to keep Yoda’s as a trophy. After the Emperors death, Luke went looking for old Jedi artifacts in the Emperor’s chambers, aka the old Jedi temple, and found the saber. I didn’t know the bit about the reference book, but I’m not at that level of the funnel!

Here's my retcon pitch: Sidious had a replica of Yoda's Lightsaber made for Mas Amedda to torch infront of the new Empire in order to prove a point. Sidious of course kept Yoda's real Lightsaber as a trophy; a symbol of the Sith's triumph over the Jedi Order. He kept the Lightsaber either in his palace (the former Jedi Temple) or in one of his numerous vaults/storehouses he had scattered throughout the Galaxy.
After the events of Episode VI, Luke traveled across the Galaxy trying to learn as much as he could about the Force and the Jedi. I have no doubt he probably visited the old Jedi Temple on Coruscant as well Palpatine's vaults/storehouses. There, he discovered Yoda's Lightsaber and liberated it to honor his old master.

My guess is that Yoda had two lightsabers, one that he used in combat and one he kept around in a vault, perhaps for training. It would make sense that he would have that, considering he trained Jedi for 800 years. It's like Darth Sidious's two lightsabers. He lost the first one against Mace Windu and used his second one against Yoda.

Yoda wasn't always the Grand Master of the Jedi. Perhaps when he was younger he was out on a mission and the lightsabre he had with him at the time was taken from him or lost?
"Know you what a Jedi as old as Yoda can make, in so many years?"
    "Master?"
    "Many MISTAKES!"
From the book Yoda; Dark Rendezvous. A pretty good read all in all. Another Legends source says that he gifted the Purge Survivor, Qu Rahn, with a gold-bladed lightsabre that was later taken from him after Return of the Jedi and given to the Dark Jedi Pic. However, no mention is made of Yoda having a lightsabre after Revenge of the Sith apart from this, although I may have missed something, and the EU sure had a lot of stuff going on.

I believe that is when Dooku adopted his curved hilt lightsaber. If this true, then Yoda likely did this as well. It look's like Yoda's hilt and so that was the assumption, but SW hilts don't seem to be as unique as people think (especially during the war). For instance, Pablo-Jill's hilt is clearly the same brand of design as Darth Maul's, while General Grevious is shown in the movies ("top-canon") to be running around with straight up clones of the same hilt designs that Obi-Wan and Anakin use for their sabers.

It's one of the only media franchises that brings out that childlike sense of wonder in so many millions of people, so I think it's a real blessing when some things are kept a little in the dark, and we're left with only some puzzle pieces and our imaginations to figure it out. Like you said in the video, I'm really upset by the people who call it bad storytelling or contradictory of canon when something isn't explained in full immediately, one such example being Palpatine's return from the dead. We're given plenty of hints and clues and insinuations, without a cut-and-dry explanation, but I don't think that's a bad thing at all, as long as it's not detrimental to the story. I think it's really magical when we're given the opportunity to wonder and imagine about things like this.

Id like to think Charles Soule might have a chance to retcon/fix/justify it himself in the mainline 2020 comic even some one off line about Luke finding out the Palpatine staged having it destroyed but kept his little green friends saber in a secret collection all along. Or have it be a whole arc of his run just further connecting his own material.

If you look at the Yoda lightsaber that's Canon, and the Yoda lightsaber that he presents to grogu they're not the same.
They have a very similar structure but the details are different so it's very possible that in exile he made another but never used it as there was no need. It was an out of sight out of mind kinda thing. Or he made one but had no kyber Crystal for is so technically he didn't have a lightsaber but just a shell of one.

Whether it was a mess up like Anakin having two fleshy arms on Mustafar, When Yoda is rescued after the senate fight he jumps into Bails speeder with his lightsaber on his belt.

THIS IS WHY I LOVE THIS CHANNEL! This point of view, positive, inquisitive, thoughtful, open minded and imaginative about solutions to connect the discrepancies that appear in canon instead of tearing it all down in a fit of rage like those that cannot accept change.

    Personally I hate headcanons.
People make a new canon that is wrong to what actually happened. Often they think is the real one, and they often argue with people who know the real one.
    Not all people do though.
But either way, it's not the real story, it's whatever they want to happen when they aren't in control. You can't ever take them seriously.

This is exactly the point of probably my favorite subreddit asksciencefiction . People ask questions about a science fiction universe/canon and answers are all in-universe. The most important rule is that you can't just say "oh well the writers were dumb". Sometimes there are actual canon answers that people provide, but sometimes an answer is a non-canon justification for something that can fit the canon. Highly recommend that subreddit.

To suggest Yoda may have built another sabre isn't even that much of a stretch, it's exactly what I'd assumed minuted after that scene in BOBF. Anyways, great vid! Keep 'em up

Not only from the comics but we don't see Yoda retrieve his lightsaber after dueling Sidious. But from a visual standpoint it's not that hard to believe that Yoda reconstructed a lightsaber and then in that reconstruction decided that he should not have to use it. Knowing Luke has it in his possession just shows how much Luke was willing to go back to Dagobah at some point to get the lightsaber. Which I think is very tender.

If anyone is really confused/hurt comic-fans you can always say Jocosta force pulled it really fast right as it was tossed on the furnace. In the comics she had a nice hidden stash of Jedi stuff she kept as records.

I love coming up with my own theories to stories. Throwing the lightsabers into a fire wouldn't make much sense other than as a show for the crowd. The empire were seeking out kyber crystals for the death star so it would make sense to harvest the parts. Palatine could have kept yodas as a trophy. When Palatine was killed the lightsaber could have been found by luke back in the old jedi temple on coruasant

I also think Grogu's choice gains an extra layer of significance, given that it's not only about the path of the jedi vs the way of the mandalorian, it's also between carrying on a legacy vs building his own.

Here's a thought -- Dave and Jon aren't worried about the the comic books, novels, or other books. The movies and shows are canon to me. But the rest of the stuff is just alt-universe stuff. I think Dave and Jon know about the other stuff, which is why those elements are brought into the new Star Wars. But I think in their minds, all of the other materials aren't canon (or maybe, they are canon until the movies/shows say otherwise).

If the final episode of BoBF says it’s the lightsaber Yoda used in the prequels, then we can also assume Sidious had a replica of Yoda’s lightsaber built to put fear into the galaxy

I can picture Luke giving Lil' G the second gift regardless of which one Gogurt chooses.
If he takes the obvious choice of leaving by choosing the mail, Luke will give him the Light Saber for additional protection and for when he returns to his training after Din passes - either from old age or his profession. If he takes the Saber, Luke gives him the mail and joins him on his first mission as a Padawan; helping Din, Bobba, and Cab free Tatooine from the Pikes.

I like to think once Yoda decided to train Luke, he built a new lightsaber in preparation. Or even better, he built the new lightsaber while training Luke, to demonstrate to Luke how a Jedi constructs their weapon.

I'm sure we love watching u connect the dots and make a head canon as much as u like building one, so thanks! I like the idea that he just had multiple sabers and took another from the temple when he and Obi-Wan went to investigate. The idea he built another later when he didnt need it nor had access to materials or a crystal (dont like the idea of Dagobah having crystals when it was a darkside planet) is much less appealing.

Easy explanation is to just treat it like the Vader comics are also in Legends continuity. Just like the comic which explained how Kanan survived Order 66 which itself was retconned in Bad Batch, or the Ahsoka Novel whose depiction of the siege of Mandalore was retconned in Clone Wars.
Anything that is animated or live action is the gold standard for canon. Eveything else is really just 'official' fanfic.

You are definitely right about the live action movies/series then animated series in your chart. However the order of the comics, books, and other reference materials changes level depending on storytelling purposes.
Lego specials or series are canon adjacent. Finn needs some sort of Jedi training. If the only place he gets that is a Lego special, it still happened. Although I would prefer a Forces of Destiny episode or something to that effect.

I think the simplest answer is that Yoda built a new one after Obi-Wan died in preparation of training Luke. He didn't need one before that because he was in solitude. We never *see* Yoda using a lightsaber while training Luke, but he must have because Luke was (at least somewhat) able to hold his own against Vader.
