As a relatively new guardian, I can safely confirm this. The tutorial was horribly drawn out and it took forever until I could do anything else, which wasn't much since I'm not bothered to buy any of the expansions. Very bored for the majority of the time I'm playing because I can't go and get good loot. Then my friend got it and asked me to run it through with him and we played together, did a few missions, I told him to come to the tower. Found out that you have to run the ENTIRE tutorial before you can leave the Cosmodrome. The ENTIRE THING. My friend got such a bad impression that now he only plays it when I'm able to play it because according to him, I MAKE it fun. Out of all the tutorials I've played through, I can rate this experience a solid 3-4/10, and that's me being generous.
Joined the game about three weeks ago. Solo’d my first dungeon today. I usually don’t write comments, but seeing the amount of support the community feels for newbies is great.

Bosses can hit you as hard as you hit them, even when you're a max light 3. Cayde was our mentor, we fight to avenge him! 4. Ramen fuels is all 5. There are many planets, but the ones you'll hate are soon to come 6. Titans will bully you, warlocks will outsmart you, you need to be quickwitted and maneuverable. 7. Bows = snipers that hit like tanks 8. Hunters are better with a fireteam, but we all love trying solo. 9. Exotics are helpful but not necessary. 10. Beware PvP. It's full of tryhards who will destroy you before you can pull the trigger. Bonus- 11. Ignore Trials till you're max light with all the abilities. That's what people who play that use.
It’s nice seeing Destiny Veterans shepherd New Lights through the game.
