Very very nice! I remember the #5 well helping my Dad working on his replacing the blades and an occasional wooden pitman bar. It's too bad it's not mounted to a J.D. model "B" is all.
I believe that Deere No.5 will cut around 35 degrees above and below horizontal without binding the pitman arm. I know the Ford 501 will do around 45 degrees which allows me to drop down into a ditch or gully or cut from the bottom upwards on a bank.
Wow Mark, those old pitman arm cutters were built to last. I own two Ford 501 sickles (6ft & 7ft) and have used them for years. At 35.00, the prep & paint cost, then your time for working on it your still way ahead. Oh, if taken care of that mower will out last you big time.
Dang good job that looks brand new I bet I could beat your price of $35 The neighbor has one similar not sure what model but pretty close to yours I bet I could get it for $5
I currently got my hands on my great grandparents old john deere #5 mower and a 52 2 bottom plow i believe. In the process of rebuilding both of them. Can you tell me what company you sourced your parts through? Im looking at a few i can make and one i can make similar but wont be close to the same at all. I thought about forge welding it back together but worry that i will make it to soft. The mounting bracket on the rear of the mower for the hydraulic cylinder.
Yeah, as you can see, I rebuilt mine 8 years ago and parts were easier to come by. I believe I got mine on ebay. You can also consider craigslist. And you might even have to buy another mower and use the parts off of it. Might be cheaper in the long run. Plus you can always sell what you don't use... Hope that helps... Good Luck!
Soi have one of these I picked up to fix up. Found your video after i started replacing the pitman and couldnt figure out how to get the ball and socket joint back together correctly. I would love information about what hydraulic cylinder you used on yours, mine also did not come with one, but I'd sure like to add one. I haven't been able to find any information on specs for a cylinder. Also, looks like you are running that with a Ford 801 series tractor?, which is what I would be using as well co-oincidentally so if you have any comments on how they work together I'd love to know. Do you use a PTO powered hydraulic pump to push the cylinder?
I use pieces from songs that I have written in all of my videos. There was one video I did that I used the song "Rock You Like A Hurricane", but other than that, they are all mine.
Its been a while since I did mine, but as I recall, the one end is bolted on, so if you loosen those bolts, it will have less tension so that you can get things together and then is is just a matter of tightening up the bolts... Se if that doesn't help you out.
Best mower JD ever made

I just got a #5 mower for free, I just had to cut back the pricker bushes and hual it out. I plan to restore it this summer.
feel free to update your progress here
Mark Dennis I am in possession of a No.5 mower and would love to exchange information on how you did all of that beautiful work sir.
Nice... I have a 1947 JD model B that would look real good in front of it! I have a #5 mower too, but not as nice as yours!!!

+FoMoCo1 I'm sure it will outlast me. I don't work it very hard, I just cut down the cattails around the pond.
+mark dennis Right, you run a sickle at relatively low rpms and ground speed anyway.
What size pitman arm does it take ? I got my dad's but it doesn't have a pitman arm... Thank you
My #5 Pittman Arm was wooden. It would break when the mower snagged up. Much cheaper than ruining your mower.
Mine is wooden as well
that thing is sick! (get it)
Clancy Coburn your bad puns are not needed here

Nice video! If I may ask, what is the first song you used in this video?
I beat it . Gave 5 bucks for mine .
Mark. Any tips for hooking up the big spring on the lifting lever?

I got the same mower last week for $0.00
