There is a line of thought that the front body mounts can be an issue that cause the cracking. They tend to wear and crack quite quickly.
Also a poorly fitted Bull Bar could impact on the body causing cracking.

I like how down to earth you guys are, and basically having a humble attitude towards the churn em out mentality of UA-cam. Making videos in your own time and about things you like to do is what it is all about in my opinion. You guys are literally a younger version of my own family. Mum and Dad working, young kids, mortgage, and stuff to pay for and then finding time to do things you like and make vids for your channel, We broke an axle on the camper trailer last month......the whole family was in mourning....until we could afford to get it fixed a couple of days ago when I flew home from work. We have a 76 GXL Wagon. Bloody love it. Just back from SA across the Nullabor... didn't miss a beat. Fuel consumption was good (towing 16ft van) but came into its own when things got tough (head winds etc). Had it since 2009 new (look at leasing purchase options ... some WA Government Departments have great fringe benefits rebates 👍). Wouldn't drive anything else... taken ours places cars shouldn't be able to go 😁. Love your videos.

All caravan manufacturers are struggling to get their products out so it's not the swift causing the issue. As far as the ute is concerned, we experienced the rear end crack on both sides of our Triton and before you say they are known for that, so was the BT50 parked up beside our Triton at Katherine wreckers and a Ram which cracked going across the Simpson desert. All of these modern utes have issues and because of that we will never own a 4WD ute again or at least till they prove they've fixed their problems. We've now gone back to a wagon in the form of a Prado. Good luck with getting everything organised and keep an eye on that new vehicle for potential crack issues

@@WildTouring Hilux we've seen and my husband has seen a LandCruiser ute cracked. What a lot of North Qld station owners and mining companies are doing is before their Toyotas hit the dirt they have the risk areas strengthened. Perhaps this is something you could look into before you start any trips. I believe a company in Townsville does it. Ours broke slowly driving over the Edith Falls railway line. We didn't have airbags and the car, caravan and ball weight we're all well under maximum weight. To say it broke our hearts was an understatement.

Love your content and straight forward honesty … keep it that way and win friends not hanger ons. Like all of us you ( and me) are trying to fit in a mini what should be going onto a Mack truck and it causes problems. I know I’ve had a rethink and discarded some things that where more of a want than a need, back to basics a bit if you like. I see all these builds with induction cookers, hot water heaters with showers, coffee machines, ovens etc etc. and just think why ?? Upgrade a build by thousands of $$$ so they can have a chia latte and cook a toasted camembert cheese sandwich in 30 sec. 😀😀 I’ve even gone away from a gas cooker and bottles to a small butane stove, much lighter and space saving, we use a fire most of the time to cook anyway, bit like All4 Adventure do. If you sign away your life to a 79 that won’t be the answer either. Good luck with what ever you go with.

Totally understand the dilemma with choice of tow vehicle, we went through the same thing. 79 was the only choice we could come up with that would suit our needs with some very heavy modifications to bring it up to the payload we wanted for full time travel. But could not justify the price and mods. We ended up buying a Isuzu NPS 4x4 super singles dual cab truck with a big canopy on the back. It is fully setup with lithium batteries, solar and truck based camping. We also tow a van. The cost worked out much the same as what we would have had to pay for the 79 but with a lot bigger payload, no stress to the vehicle no weight issues and still capable of 4x4 tracks. Maybe something to bring into your equations, they are becoming a popular choice for towing. Good luck with your choice. 😊

No doubt you’re paying for the badge but considering the number of them on the road and in commercial and industrial use I don’t think you can go wrong. The drivelines aren't strong lol. 5th gear is weak as, the clutches are next to useless. They burn through swivel hubs, the rear axle is a very well known failure point when towing. Yes there are fixes for all this but it costs an absolute fortune and as a standard vehicle they're terrible. that's before you get into all the other issues that need fixing out of the box. Hi Cam and Tiff, I believe the cost of used 4x4's will come down...bit like house prices now interest rates are rising! I imagine there will be someone else's loss, will be someone elses gain. I would still look at a 200! I changed from a Dual Cab ute to a 200. Just towing what a difference and I don't lug a big van or anything. Everything just felt SOLID. I don't normally do tag a longs but went on one a couple of years ago for a weekend. The tour leader turned to me after seeing a number of the Isuzu's, BT 50's, Colorado's hammering up this particular hill and he said....I'd hate to be the owner of these vehicles in 5 - 10 years time. They are just not built to handle this. I laughed it off at the time and since going on another trip with him in my 200, I now know exactly what he was referring to. The Cruiser (and every other bigger 4x4) just crawled up hills between 1200 - 1500 RMS whilst the 4 cyl 4x4's were pushing 3000 - 4000 revs.

G'day Cam n Tiff. Sad to hear the Dmax is in trouble after you poured so much time, money and thought into her. Whilst i love the 79 series and am lucky enough to have access to one if I ever need it. I thought you may be interested in the comparison I've got for you. I have a 2011 Amarok plus access to a 2014 79 GXL Dual Cab with suspension upgrades n air bags. Pros of the 79, the v8 burble, torque central, I have never had an issue with the track difference off road through heavy sand or towing. Driving it throughout Australia including rurally you can get parts anywhere, As long as you don't expect a race car you will have no issues. Even with the standard front seats (which many people complain about) I reckon they are fine for long trips, maybe 17 years as a truck driver has adjusted what is survivable. Resale value. The cons now - for the money you get next to no tricks/tech. They are tiny inside especially the back seat, I have 3 teenage children who in the back of the cruiser are shoulder to shoulder whilst in the Rok there is room between them. Believe it or not the Amarok is actually wider and longer and more comfortable for all passengers.
Climbing down from my soap box, I can't wait for the journey as you will bring us all along for the ride. Cheers

😲 Bugger about the delay in the van, and the Dmax issues. Good idea to have a back up plan with the 79 series. Yeeah can appear to be over priced. But depends on how you look at it. Yep they are basic. But they will more than likely outlast most other utes by 10 to 20 years. So a different perspective. Love the chats you guys do. Great video guy’s love the honesty… I recently swapped from a dmax to a 78 series troopy, my kids are driving themselves now so no need for back doors…WA delivery (Midland) was 9 months, dealer was fantastic to deal with. 70 series LC’s are a completely different vehicle and I honestly love it and for me was the best upgrade from the dmax. They cop a lot of flack about running costs which is not correct… anyhow good luck with the choice its a tough expensive decision either way you go.

The 79s need alot of work to get them where you want. However they are bullet proof. We had rangers, and dmax's in our mines and they broke down or fell apart within 6 months from the harsh conditions. We have 79 series that have over 600,000km. They run 24/7 and do a minimum of 4k km a week, miss services often. Just food for thought.

Now this might sound crazy .. but if 200 series 300 series and the money pit Toyota 79 price tags are eye watering and your not getting a crazy increase improvement from dmax
honesty there's so many Rams for $90k and under $100k ... ive got a deposit down now and with 4.5T towing on the 1500 the test drive with a 14ft caravan was like childs play

    • @WildTouring
      @WildTouring  2 роки тому

Appreciate the suggestion. We have a Ram in the family, and its BRILLIANT to tow with. If a tow rig was all I needed then I would seriously consider one.
But its not suitable for my needs.
The weight figures on the 1500 are tight.
Yes 4500kg towing. But the payload is the major issue with them for me (not so much of an issue if you are planning to keep it pretty much stock).
700kg payload from factory (2750 tare, 3450 GCM).
With a family of 4, a tank of fuel and 300kgs of ballweight I'd be right on the limits before any barwork, LR tank, canopy, tinny/outboard, fridge, drawers ect....
Now of course there is GVM upgrades available. Around 5k brings it up to 1000kg payload (1200kg if you are buying new and get a Lovells kit fitted pre rego).
20k (which I would call eye watering..) for a JMACX kit gets you 1450kg payload.
79 series will tow 3500kg with 1100kg payload from factory.
      (Tare 2200, GVM 3500, GCM 6800).
There's parts all over the country for them, endless modifications available and they've proven to be bush-tough in Australia for over a decade. I guess that's why they're a popular choice for mining, farming, station work ect. And are currently very hard to buy new!
I'm not absolutely sold on one, I acknowledge they need a fair chunk spent on them to make them comfortable tourers. Hopefully something better pops up in the next couple of years. But for me right now with what's available, they make the most sense.

I noticed similar cracks - both sides on my 2010 GU Patrol not long after I got it in 2013. with 80,000km on. Ex budget rental - probably got thrashed hard on corrugations its entire life with 50psi in the tyres. I later found the front two body mounts had collapsed which probably caused it. ZD30 patrol owners are used to their cars failing - so there probably is no class action though.

Fact is that I doubt any vehicle these days is made to be loaded to its max and pounded over corrugations, sand dunes or whatever in some of the conditions we have here.

the way the Isuzu chassis is constructed allows for the front rails to flex and that, in turn allows the bulbar to `rock’ from side to side, magnifying the metal-stressing effects causing metal fatigue and cracks through the front end including chassis where big, heavy bull-bars and winches have been fitted, effectively cantilevering off the rails welding the cracks up means you’re technically altering the crumple zone of the vehicle and this could cause potential issues for insurance if not engineered possible you would have to look into it I could be wrong also have seen some people mount thier heavy winches further back towards the front axle on a cradle like contraption this greatly minimise the weight right forward of you chassis also stiffer after market suspension contributes towards metal fatigue in most cars so something to consider to avoid the other side doing the same thing

Been a while since I had you grace the PC screen, but was worth it. Like you, I am struggling a bit with what is good for towing, etc' etc'. Have you thought about getting a Canter or Isuzu 4x4?? My wife isn't keen on towing the van or doing any sort of 4x4ing, which is ok with me. Does Tiff drive much?? Haven't seen any footage, so could be wrong.
Took a Next-gen Ranger for a run ( 15 month wait, can have a Canter by Xmas this yr )....really torquey motor, and a bigger gvm and gcm. I don't fish, but you could easily get a boat and loader on the truck with van and be way under gvm and gcm, you'll just need an LR truck licence, which easy to get.....
Looking forward to seeing the new van. I'd stick with 12V as it could be problematic charging 24V from a 12V vehicle....
    Cheers
