In 1606 a Mexican Augustinian priest brought to the Philippines a dark image of Jesus Christ carved from from mesquite wood, carrying a large wooden cross. The image is presently enshrined at St. John the Baptist Parish, Quiapo and every year on this day, all Filipinos honor this image, reminding them of the basic foundation of our faith, The Cross. "If you have to be followers of mine, deny yourself, pick up your cross and follow me" (Luke 9:23)
