Had the privilege once of running into Dêrek Luke downtown Newark, NJ once; he'd just left a sneaker store & headed to the bus stop across the street to Jersey City, NJ ( his hometown)!❤❤❤❤
LOL Only done in the movie for dramatic effect! 🤣🤣🤣 In reality, the call was made immediately and actually stopped the clock with 1 second left before the end of the *first* overtime, with the score tied 71-71 (but if it hadn't been called, the clock would've expired on the shot). Also, the shot apparently was a *much* more spectacular 35-foot runner (in a day and age when the three-pointer didn't exist yet)! But yes, in the actual game (which was quite incredible on its own, not sure why they changed so much), the second overtime was wild in a different way. To put it simply, Texas Western was up 81-75 with less than a minute left, but the game ended 81-80. And yes, part of *that* sequence was Lattin hanging on the rim and receiving a technical (except he didn't score, and he actually was hanging there because a player fell under him and he didn't want to land on that player - so Texas Western was quite upset he got called for a technical). Still, it was too little too late, and Kansas lost 81-80. An incredible game, and one that had quite enough drama *without* changing the events - not sure why they changed them.
I'm sorry, but after reading about what happened in the actual game - why did they change how the game played out? It was *quite* dramatic *already,* and I don't really understand how the changes were supposed to add "more" drama! For those who don't know, simply put, the game *really did* go into double-overtime, and Texas Western *did* end up winning 81-80! Lattin *did* end up receiving a technical late in the game that he was (arguably) *very lucky* didn't cost them the game, and JoJo White *did* end up having a would-be game-winning shot at the buzzer wiped away in OT due to the ref calling him for stepping out of bounds. So yes, what's the difference? Well, in actuality, JoJo White's buzzer beater in which he was judged to have stepped on the line was at the end of the *first* OT, and was actually a runner he heaved from *30 feet away* (not a routine shot on designed play from the corner near the baseline - i.e., it was a *much* more difficult and improbable shot! It was almost like when Steph Curry hit that 35-foot winner against OKC that you've undoubtedly seen by now except closer to the baseline to where the photo of it shows his foot is *at least* hovering over the line)! And yes, the *second* OT was arguably *even more* dramatic! To put it simply, with 36 seconds to go, Texas Western scored to make it 81-75! Kansas had almost certainly lost, but then, somehow, scored *five* points to bring it to within 1 (one of those points was a technical free throw, which occurred because, yes, David Lattin was hanging on the rim - which was *not* on a made dunk, and more importantly, was apparently only to prevent himself from falling on top of someone who fell down right below him. A *very* controversial call that nearly cost Texas Western the game), with Texas Western *barely* hanging on to survive! Again, that's *already* about as dramatic as can be! So I *really* don't get why they felt the need to change what happened! Like, I understand changing it to make it "more dramatic," but I completely disagree that what the movie changed these events to was *at all* more dramatic than what *actually happened* (I'd say it's *less* dramatic)! The *real* version of the *exact* same events they decided to include is *at least* just as dramatic, and has the added benefit of having *actually* happened (which is *part* of the appeal of these stories)! So again, I don't understand why they changed those events!
