When I was coming up in the tech repair field in early 2000 I had a guy, who started back in the early 80's and what not. He once told me, "You try to never make a mistake, but when you do, it's what you do after that separates you from the rest." You admitted you could of made a mistake, did what you could to make the person happy and did what you could to fix, understand and resolve the problem the best you could. Never lose that.

I think a good practice for you Greg, when doing these kinds of things is to add a small sticker on a screw somewhere in the device when you are putting things back together with your initials on it, (Like the manufacturers do for warranty purposes) so if this ever happens again, you'll know if the repair shop even bothers to open things up to check or just throws out some BS to the customer. If the shop didn't disturb the sticker and charged the customer, it gives him a really good claim to ask for his money back. Just a thought.

I remember the last time I went to a repair shop in 2015. I've handled most of my electronic repairs since I was a teenager but I was so busy at the time. I thought the motherboard wasn't working with my cpu because it needed a BIOS update and this board didn't have a BIOS flashback. I needed a shop with an older compatible chip.
I dropped it off and they set it aside on a corner and said they would diagnose it and let me know what the problem was. They came back and quoted me $300 for a bunch of nonsense that had nothing to do with my issue. I said I didn't want to pay that ridiculous price so they tried charging me $150 for a "diagnostic".
I returned to the shop and noticed that the computer was still in the exact same spot they had put it. No one did anything to it. I had to negotiate to get my PC now which was being held hostage by these unscrupulous repair people. I ended up paying around $60 just to get it back. I confirmed it was never touched. The cable ties I put were still in place. The thermal past was still on the cpu so they never took it out to try a BIOS update with an older chip.
I ended up taking it to a person who had a cpu to do the BIOS update and it worked. I'll never go to a repair shop again if I can help it.

Thanks for the great videos Greg! You touched on something that happens to me sometimes. Let me tell you something. Whenever a PC repair shop says "The mainboard or motherboard needs replaced", That means they have no idea what the problem is. Many times I have gotten a device where another shop said that, and it was a cheaper $50 fix and it took a little more digging.
Ha ha ha!!! See? I wrote this comment about a few minutes in the video before you jumped the connectors. The mainboard needs replaced should always be questioned when you hear it from a repair shop.

I took the car to the shop and told him what they said so he checked them for free and they were still in very good condition, he even showed me the pads and what worn ones look like.

And the fact that 2/3 buttons worked, I mean what are the odds of misaligning the cable in such a way that only one circuit is broken.. Id hedge my bets on there being a break in the power buttons circuit in the ribbon cable, they are ooooh so fragile

And for the front button, because it senses when a person touches it(not a physical button) when you were touching the connector it would make the same responce as the front button, good to check solder joints tho, and over all, added resistance in the ribbin cable would cause the inconsistencies you saw. I sent to another repairer, they replaced a power cap inside ….. and for the cost of a cafe lunch for two, repaired and working ….. most repairers are DIY and anything outside a device loading up is a faulty main board and an expensive repair 😡🤬!

@Greg Salazar 21:37 The fact you can activate the buttons by just touching the pads is normal. I used to mod Xbox 360's all the time and the "slim" models in particular used this exact same type of ribbon cable to capacitive button setup and I discovered that you could actually bridge the power pins with your thumb without the ribbon connected (you could also bridge the eject pins with your finger if you knew where to hold your finger. Made for much easier testing because you didn't have to futz with connecting the front panel to do boot testing.
So if you get another Xbox and think that being able to activate it from the connector via touch is a "problem", it's not. Perfectly normal

Here are a couple of points I've learn of the OG Xbox ONE, it can power on and work without the Optical drive, BUT you can't update the console if the Optical drive is not connected, the optical drive and the MB are paired, so if your optical is toasted you'll need to do some flashing on a chip to copy the key on the new one to be recognize, also, some times the power button doesn't work well when pressed at the center, try touching the perimeter and it might work
    [Personal experiences with repair shops]
I learn all this when I Accidentally drop my Xbox while moving it and the top plastic side broke, luckily only the ribbon cable and the optical drive broke, the HDD and the fan work well, , the whole plastic cover went flying but the console did survived the fall, i used this opportunity to learn how to disassemble it and repair it
I personally no longer trust any repair shops, the only way for me to trust them is if the are willing to show me the error in real time or in video, I already lost 1 laptop to repair shops and 1 console, and many "Sorry we couldn't fix it, it'll be 25 to 50 for the service tho!"
The laptop was my sister, it fell and the screen broke, but I manage to connect an external screen and blindly navigate it to login and activate the second monitor, so I KNEW it work, after backing up all the data and doing some test to see if anything was alright we took it to a repair shop to get the screen replace they told me the screen model they had was not compatible with my laptop and they just assemble it and return it, they charge me 25 bucks for service, I made the mistake of not checking the laptop and 2 months later found out it absolutely stop posting, 0, nada, they somehow broke the MB or CPU, I tried disassemble it and check if by any chance it was an assembly mistake, but nope, they destroy an already broken but functional laptop, they refuse all responsibility and told me to pound sand
The console was an Xbox 360 (ARCADE) at the time only the disk drive broke and stop reading disks (Very common for the arcade version) and the repair shop told us that they couldn't repair it, when we told them the console was working before and now it refuse to power on, my dad started to argue with them and they called the police, we ended up leaving because a $300 console was not worth all this trouble (They wanted to charge $50 dollars for services, we ended up leaving after the arguing, if they want that money they had to take responsibility, by the way we had video of it powering on before taking it to the repair shop), my dad bought me another Xbox the next day, the one that could read OG Xbox disk (Which had a better Optical drive, that lasted me until it suffer the 3 ring of death in 2010) this happened in 2007, and were we lived Xbox warranty was a load of BS, because we had to ship it to the US and we had to pay for everything, at the end the shipping and all would have been almost $180 so yeah, no thx.
After the laptop experience I lost all trust in electronic repair shops, I've repair almost everything tv's, consoles, laptops, speakers, cellphones, etc. Thanks to those assholes, it has save a lot of money, so I guess it ended up a win for me

@@ScaryClown338 it doesn't matter, because the earlier the problem is identified, the earlier it can be corrected. When a fixed computer is left for weeks and months, at that point it's very hard to pin point if it's the user, deliverer, or service person who caused the problem.
Thereforez the earlier they test the PC, the sooner they can rectify the issue.

26:59 Even with a keyed physical interface, the pin out can still be switched. For example: straight-through aka "patch" cables, crossover cables and rollover cables. All three use an 8P8C connector (it's often called an RJ45 connector, but that's actually wrong. True RJ45 is keyed and extremely rare). One can take a cue from mechanics on this one, and create a witness mark. Also, fun bonus fact: "patch cable", despite being used ubiquitously, is technically wrong when connecting a device the wall port. A "patch cable" is a cable that connects the patch panel port to a switch port. A DROP cable is what connects the wall port to a device.

Yes, I agree but it wouldn't have worked in this case because he had him to take it to a repair shop, remember? So even if he placed a indicator sticker inside of it and the local repair shop said the same thing about replacing the mainboard, what difference would it have made? What, to see if they went inside it or not? I believe that he should stick to his policy of not dealing with out of state cleaning and repairs so that he don't have to deal with all of this speculation. But what he should do is record the serials of these units along with the video/pictures that he have of them.

Really stand up way to handle it. Honestly, frying hardware was never main concern (I did PC repair for 10 years). The thing that bit me a few times was data loss. I am still amazed by how many people have NO backups at all. They hand over their entire digital life to a stranger and it never occurs to them, "Hey, maybe I should keep a copy." One guy got mad because I didn't back it up before looking at it! Just protect yourself. 99% of people are honest & decent. But that 1% can inflict a lot of misery. Enjoy your work. It reminds me why I left the field!

It's also interesting how they used to lock HDDs to the motherboard of the first-gen XBOX consoles and then again locking disc drives to the motherboard of Xbox 360s.

    • @wyblackwolf
      @wyblackwolf 2 роки тому

I hate that the optical drives are locked to the motherboard...... the board inside the drive is easy to swap out at least. Just a pain when either one fails and the other is just fine, but you have to replace both to make it work regardless. Not to mention swapping out the hdd out requires you to re-flash the console (I can't remember if re-flash is the correct term for this)
