The most thorough and interesting review I have seen on UA-cam, Well done. I bought one of these as a gift at Christmas and its good to now know how to DCC the loco and about possible improvements that can be made
Excellent video and Brilliant review. You definitely need to do more reviews, you have a natural flair for it. Very constructive and informative. Even more important is the fact that your layout is what most of us aspire to, so your reviews would be Most appreciated. I'm sure many others would agree. Kind regards. John.
That was an excellent review, i feel all of your videos have been quite informative and motivating. Please keep it going as it's really interesting to see the similarities and differences in the era you are modeling between Australia and the States
I'm always in when it comes to such a beautiful little thing. Love all the great info you provided about it. Very knowledgeable. And don't foget the great shots of it running a long your layout both the engine end your layout looked great. Thanks a million for the great video and story. 5***** Cheers RT :-)
In regards to the over tightened screws. I found that holding both the bonnet and the buffer beam, between my thumb and forefinger while pressing down, gave just enough clearance in order to remove the screws. Also take care when removing the body work, as the front and rear hand rails may be for (some reason) glued in place!
nice review might have to get myself one now lol! NCB one for me tho really like that livery! can't wait to see some running sessions with it in your newly modelled scrap yard!
I've always loved diesel shunters as I used to watch class 03 Drewery shunters shunting and running on a branch line as a kid back in the 1970's. My own layout has just as many Diesel shunters as other locomotives and is still running on the pioneering ancestor of DCC, Hornby's Zero One. Plenty of diesel shunters that need to be done for ready to run such as the English Electric LMS / BR Jackshaft station pilot / heavy freight shunter (most of which ended up on the Continent serving with the Army and later replacing the shortage of locos in Europe after the war), English Electric LMS / BR inside frame shunter (Ironically this was the loco Triang introduced in the 1950's and remained well into the 1990's repainted and past off as a Class 08, which it wasn't). Class 15, Class 17 (Clayton) and Class 18 diesel freight locos. North British 0-4-0 (British Railways in Scotland) which was done by Jouef / Playcraft in 4mm. (I have two, one with correct underframe and wheels) but a more modern replacement would be nicer. Both needed a lot of additional lead to improve traction / pickup. Ultimately the master / slave Class 13 made up of permanently coupled Class 12 0-6-0 shunters used in the hump shunting yards on British Railways.
Andy Reid Good to hear a Zero One is still out there being used. I personally have never seen one. The class 15, 16 and 17 are available from Heljan in 00 scale.
I still want a Jackshaft though and the only RTR ones I've seen were PIKO in TT3 scale. Their life span on UK railways was 1938 to early 1950's and didn't even last until BR's green livery phase, being all black with or without LMS still showing. All sold off into eastern Europe, hence the only RTR being of DDR origin originally in TT3 scale. The old Triang 0-6-0 English Electric inside framed 0-6-0 shunter has a close to similar body except that the Jackshaft had more battery boxes on the left side (all down most of the left side. I did start to scratch building one and only managed as far converting a Triang EE body to match the Drawings. However the chassis and jackshaft movement proved too complex for me to figure how to do. I've scratch built chassis in metal and plastic before but if you ever see an Ian Beattie drawing / diagram of the beast you'll understand the problems with that complex conrod arrangement. As a RTR model it would be an impressive sight to watch in action.
EverardJunction great job. I have been thinking about getting one of these engines and wondered how slow they would run and also deal with the points. B
It is a beauty in that color. There are decoders now with built-in capacitors that prevent stalling when dirty track or unpowered frogs are encountered. It sounds as if this loco would greatly benefit from such if you run into trouble.
BSC ( S&L ) Corby had quite a number of these Sentinels working the large iron ore quarry system and steelworks at Corby from the 1960`s up until the closure in 1980, the majority of the shunters were Steelmans.
Nice little shunter that is and I like the work on the repaint as well mate. Before watching this review, I was under the impression that it would use a 6 pin N gauge decoder due to its compact size :). Ash.
I didn't know weather 2 get the Hornby tornado Pullman express or this and iv seen ur review and I'll take it into account also isn't their a weathered version Nice ep !
Fantastic review. It makes a refreshing change to see a thorough review and appraisal of this wonderful little model. Nicely shot too and makes a change to listen to commentary that holds my attention. I own the Esso version and would like to purchase a second Sentinel and re-spray it into green and change the identity to "Les Forster" based at Rushden. Please can you tell me what you used to mask off the maker's plate and any other detail. I'm assuming the glass is easy to remove too. Talking of which, I wonder if Laser Glaze will produce a replacement glazing for this model. Paul
Thanks for the comment paul. I used tamiya masking tape when respraying this model. The glass is removable, but is glued in tightly so you will need to take care when pushing it out. Since this review I have added additional weight in the form of liquid gravity from deluxe materials. This has improved the running of the model.
EverardJunction Thanks for the reply. Appreciate the advice re: Tamiya masking tape and taking care removing the glazing. With regard to the added weight, how/where did you apply the liquid gravity? And secondly, what glue did you use to secure the LG in place?
Nice looking model, the Durham Locomotive preservation group own the Tarmac sentinel that is at Shildon NRM this is the one that hornby used to make these models, the real one at shildon is currently white but will be put back into its green livery, i have ordered the green tarmac model from DLPG and Hornby havent even sent them out to them yet so am still waiting for mine :(
As a complete newbie to model railways I was wondering what is the best way to plan my layout, is there a software design program that I should use, how will I know what track pieces I need to order, how do I build a baseboard and if I want to have two levels on my layout is there a way of learning how to do that. I have a million and one questions but if you could offer any help to get me started then I would be very grateful. Thanks
If your starting out from complete scratch it can be quite difficult to know what to do and what to get. I would suggest doing the following.... Decide if you want to run your layout using dc or dcc control Buy a dc or dcc train set and see how you get on with it Also it's very important to keep things simple for your first layout. I made the mistake on my first layout of overcomplicating things which resulted in a layout that didn't work very well at all. Your number 1 objective at all times should be ensuring your trains run well. There are various forums you can join such as rmweb or newrailwaymodellers. They have are loads of guides, advice and help on starting a layout.
Hiya, what a perfect review, full of facts and great views just as I would expect from you. Why any thumbs down? Don't get it. Love the paint job, very profesional, again... Thank you
Great review. Good job on the respray. Could you let me know where you got the yellow road/rail barriers near the signal box at 20mins 40 secs on video? Cheers
I'm going to set up a model railway soon, is it best to have cork strips under the track and ballast over it or is it better to just lay down track then shove ballast on top
good review richard. i too have the esso version and will be painting it into either yellow or orange. did you hand paint it or take it apart and airbrush it? terry
This is great! A lovely little loco! :) Also I see you have now got an 08 and some of those hoppers in the background, COOL, are you going to mention them in your next update? Lovely repaint as well! Cheers, Tommy :)
Are you track sides just weathered with sleeper grime mate? I have watched your weathering video previously and that's what you said you used. The branch line where that sentinel was seen running looks really well weathered, if you could tell me what colours you used I would appreciate it! Looks grey with some brown?!
Hi Dave Yes, most of the weathering is done with sleeper grime. However I do go over it with grey or black to give deeper more used look. This is true for points and areas of the branchline. Also applying several coats works very well.
Perfect, thanks mate! I will get around to ballasting and weathering eventually as I have abut 1 million jobs to do! You techniques looks fairly straight forward (I will practice!!) Dave
Great video,Had only seen a couple of reviews which are not up to your good standards with the camera. there is a good video by eagle50043 at Dove Holes which is having a good battle. Just brought the Hanson livery, plan to purchase 'Barabel' whwn its released.
A very good review, thanx for adding! It really is a little loco isnt it?! Wel dun on repainting, non of the liveries appeal to me either, bit brave to do it to a brand new loco! Im nt sure if i trust it to run over my insul frog points at the slow speeds u showed??
like the review and one question do you live in a council house or a bort house because i was just thinking about doing model railways and if i did it in a council house would i get dun for it
Richard what type of kadee coupler or number/ length do you you use on your diesel loco's say your class 47/50/56/60 or does the same one do all thanks jack.
Huh. Painted BR blue and white then weathered, this would look like a great thing for hauling my B800 track cleaner. Especially with it's shape. Pity about the problems it has with dirty track, then.
It's strange Richard that what is seemingly quite an ugly looking loco can be quite cute at the same time. A great review and has left me thinking would I like to have this on my layout but it does look lovely on yours! ................Graham
I found that a really informative and enjoyable review! It shame you don't do more reviews.
Great little loco and very nicely repainted.
The most thorough and interesting review I have seen on UA-cam, Well done.
I bought one of these as a gift at Christmas and its good to now know how to DCC the loco and about possible improvements that can be made
love the paint job, looks great in that colour

great review Richard, you should do them more often, and excellent paint job repainting it, nice addition to your scrap yard Andy
Great informative video, have purchased 4 off, for my new dock layout.
Like the paint job, and thanks for all your descriptions ...
x Paul x
Great review, I'm looking forward to getting my Tarmac version, thanks.
Just seen this review for the first time, brilliantly done, great close photography, and a nice looking layout.😎
Great review!!! Very informative, u should definitely do more!!!!!!!
And a great shot of it running down the branchline
That was an excellent review, i feel all of your videos have been quite informative and motivating. Please keep it going as it's really interesting to see the similarities and differences in the era you are modeling between Australia and the States
love it, great paint job and review
Enjoyed your review, I have purchased 4 for my new Dock layout. Thanks for the tips and advice x Paul x
Great review! Really picked out a lot of detail i didn't notice, nice repaint too ;)
A very nice addition to your layout Richard with plenty of detail it sure looks good and a very nice paint job you have done to enhance it

Nice review on this ace little loco....
Very nice video and lovely paint job on the shunter
Nice review, love those Traffic Service wagons you have.
nice review might have to get myself one now lol! NCB one for me tho really like that livery! can't wait to see some running sessions with it in your newly modelled scrap yard!
Very nice model and layout! Thanks for sharing! Still need to get one of these great models!
You're modest, that was a great review!
Very cool little switcher. Very unique looking engine.

EverardJunction great job. I have been thinking about getting one of these engines and wondered how slow they would run and also deal with the points. B
Perfect for an ECC loco! Nice! I think this is what I need for my planned layout....!
Excellent review with good close-ups. I like that little shunter. I just got an 08 recently. Rob
It is a beauty in that color. There are decoders now with built-in capacitors that prevent stalling when dirty track or unpowered frogs are encountered. It sounds as if this loco would greatly benefit from such if you run into trouble.
I think those are called stay alive decoders. The ones i've seen look to be too big to fit inside the model.
Hi Everard
really like the blue livery you've done a good paint job
love all your videos
Barnaby
Very nice review, more informative than my shorter one. I got the red one too but left it as it is. For the price Hornby have done a great job here.
As others have said, an excellent paint job. I am tempted to 'annonymise' mine. Very useful; background to their use as well.
BSC ( S&L ) Corby had quite a number of these Sentinels working the large iron ore quarry system and steelworks at Corby from the 1960`s up until the closure in 1980, the majority of the shunters were Steelmans.
A great review buddy, you need to start doing more, love the new colour, cheers Stu @ Lime Junction
Very nicely done mate. Had the same problem with the running as you few hours of running in and mine running a lot better.
Nice little shunter that is and I like the work on the repaint as well mate. Before watching this review, I was under the impression that it would use a 6 pin N gauge decoder due to its compact size :).
Ash.
Thanks Ash
I thought it was 6 pin, but was proved wrong when I opened it. Easy enough to hard wire a decoder to it though.
EverardJunction
Your are welcome mate. I will probably vouch for a Lenz N gauge or a TCS M1 decoder with a harness :).
Ash.
Great video as always mate, look forward to the next one. Regards Mike
Update please think I've watched all your vids now getting inspired thanks for all the info
Great little model from hornby, I have the NcB one, work well at the moment, just building a small yard for it to work in
I have the belfor beaty one in orange needed to add some weight to the cab as I found it too light.
But a nice model .
Helpful review 👍
Really tempted to buy one of these now . Cracking model
for a 1st review, this is really really good.
Also i may just have to put one on my birthday list
I didn't know weather 2 get the Hornby tornado Pullman express or this and iv seen ur review and I'll take it into account also isn't their a weathered version

Nice review and a good little shunter.
Looking at it, I's suggest that the fake grill end houses the fuel tank, given there's a moulded filler cap above the headlights.
As a complete newbie to model railways I was wondering what is the best way to plan my layout, is there a software design program that I should use, how will I know what track pieces I need to order, how do I build a baseboard and if I want to have two levels on my layout is there a way of learning how to do that. Thanks richard for the info on the kadee's
Great review. Good job on the respray. Could you let me know where you got the yellow road/rail barriers near the signal box at 20mins 40 secs on video? Cheers
Those barriers are made using the hornby flexible lineside fencing cut down and painted yellow.
Great layout. Would you consider showing a track plan of your layout ?
The little guy needs some lighting. Great video as always
I'm going to set up a model railway soon, is it best to have cork strips under the track and ballast over it or is it better to just lay down track then shove ballast on top
the short end contained the fuel tank :-)
good review richard. i too have the esso version and will be painting it into either yellow or orange.
did you hand paint it or take it apart and airbrush it?
terry
Thanks Terry
I took it apart and sprayed it, took about a day or so to get done. Watch out for those screws, the ones on mine were in very tight.
Excellent review of a nice little engine
great looking model like the colour scheme cheers Kevin
use milliput modelling compound for those holes mate, its wonderful stuff and sets like concrete
This is great! A lovely little loco! :) Also I see you have now got an 08 and some of those hoppers in the background, COOL, are you going to mention them in your next update? Lovely repaint as well! Cheers, Tommy :)
Check out my previous update, I mention all the new stuff in that.

another excellent video
Great loco where did you get it from? Great reivew you should do more
I got mine from hattons, but it went out of stock very quickly. I believe hornby have more on the way.
A very good review, thanx for adding! It really is a little loco isnt it?! Wel dun on repainting, non of the liveries appeal to me either, bit brave to do it to a brand new loco! Im nt sure if i trust it to run over my insul frog points at the slow speeds u showed??
It will struggle on insulfrog points. I hope to improve the running with some added weight.
Was all ur pointwork electro in the vid again? Added weight wil definately help! I can envisage a nice lil driver or two inside as wel :)
Matthew Snowden Yes, 90% of the pointwork I have is electrofrog.
like the review and one question do you live in a council house or a bort house because i was just thinking about doing model railways and if i did it in a council house would i get dun for it
I don't, not sure what the rules and regs are surrounding council houses.
ok
Richard what type of kadee coupler or number/ length do you you use on your diesel loco's say your class 47/50/56/60 or does the same one do all thanks jack.
Jack Brown Hi Jack. I use mostly 19s, but some locos also have 18s fitted.
Huh. Painted BR blue and white then weathered, this would look like a great thing for hauling my B800 track cleaner. Especially with it's shape.
Pity about the problems it has with dirty track, then.
What does the future hold for the Sentinel now that the scrapyard scene has gone?
Great vid! Are you going to weather it?
how do you get such good depth of field when filming in macro?
If you were going to repaint it there is a sentinel livery for network south east the real thing is at Rushden historical transport museum
Oh and can i ask how u managed to mask off the decals with it being so small??
I cut out some very small pieces of masking tape for that.
Flippin eck?! Paitience of a saint then lol
you need to make it look rilly wether with rust along the parts where you said put super glue like you said rust was more likely to from thar ?
What a funny little looking loco lol.
I love it boss
Have u checked out the wabtec livery one I've got one of them in wabtec livery
hi , ive notice your rail gaps are quite big , also some of your joints are overly sharp is there a reason for this ,. nice lay out tho ..
+Dezmo59 I believe he's explained in a later video that the gaps are effectively expansion joints.
ok thanks
It's strange Richard that what is seemingly quite an ugly looking loco can be quite cute at the same time. A great review and has left me thinking would I like to have this on my layout but it does look lovely on yours! ................Graham
Nasty dribble on the rear lights
do you still use this sentinel?
The back end has the batteries in
compressor units for the brakes are in the
rear nose
I just received this great train. My review is a lot different to this one go to my channel layout 123 and see what you think about my comments
HORNBY MADE IN CHINA just doesn't sound right but there you go
Hi, I've uploaded a couple of videos of my progress on my layout if you have time please have a look, and thank you for your insprerational videos
