  • Assistants are totally overrated! Just kidding. Assistants are incredibly helpful during photoshoots, but what if they're not available or out of your budget? Who's going to hold the lights? Well... You!
    Shooting portraits by yourself using flash is not only doable, but the process is not much different from any other setup. In this video, Pye walks through how to capture dramatic portraits completely on your own using Profoto's new Clic softbox and A10 Off-Camera Flash combo.

    A simple addition to this would be to use an intervalometer (I’m sure Canon has it built in - Nikon has for many years) so the camera will shoot repeatedly, a few seconds apart, as many shots as you want. This way your model can move, adjust pose, re-pose, you can move the light, etc., and you can shoot 20, 30, however many shots you want without having to re-trigger and re-set every time. On the modern mirrorless cameras, it can even stay locked on eye-focus and keep re-focusing on the model!

    I just got a small Godox handheld softbox. What a game changer. The pictures come out amazing. A smaller softbox make them look rawer and more natural and not so much like studio work. They are perfect for my style.

    Another excellent video Pye. Shame we don't have easy access to Pro Foto equipment over here in the U.K., but shooting on location, I feel now i've got down to a perfect kit, with a pop out softbox, but using the AD100 Pro or V1 from Godox as my flash. Now, I just need to get a nice handle liek the one you're using in the shoot, and I'll be happy. looking forward to the next video.

    I can’t believe after this many years of doing this, full time, messing with light stands, especially on windy days, that I’ve never thought of using a tripod for the cam and using ME as a light stand! 🙄🤦🏼‍♂️. How did I not think of that?? 😆

    Oh man, I don't know why I never thought of this. This is definitely a game changer for me. Using a softbox outdoors is a PITA , especially when it's super windy. I LOATHE having to lug my C Stand around, especially when there's a hike/considerable walk to your location. I'll take it one step forward and even get a monopod for my monolight, which is an AD-400 Pro. I've been wanting to sell/trade it for an AD-300 Pro for even more portability.
    Okay, 3 things are getting added to my shopping list for now. Some small tripod, monopod, and remote trigger.

    10 years ago I would have been using my Quantum Q-Flash. It had more power and longer battery life, plus it also had remote control. 20 years ago I would also have been using my Quantum gear. 30 years ago I would have been using my Metz 60 flash gear and a very long sync cord. 40 years ago I would have been using my Nikon speed light on camera. For the last 5 years after drinking the Profoto Kool-Aid I'm using the B1's , B2's, B10's, and a few A1's. Thanks for the video...

    Two Challenges: 1) 400mm portraits in the city. 2) Super high F-stop so you can't depend on depth of field, although you don't normally have an issue with being bokeh dependent. Also are we not going to get anymore SLR vs FStoppers battles anymore????

    Love the video and the photographic technics, but if you used a travel light stand and did it handheld, you could get a similar image except spend half the money for $1500 in gear you talk about in this video. I know you have to make money by pitching the gear, but the price tag on these is way more than I would spend.

    • @charminbaer2323
      @charminbaer2323 Рік тому +1

      You def don't have to spend big money on Profoto gear. You can do this for a fraction of the cost with Godox and other similar brands. The AD-200 Pro is $350 which is more than twice as powerful as the Profoto A10 at almost a 1/3 of the cost. The Godox trigger is $69, and you can get a parabolic softbox from Glow for another $69, and you have a similiar footprint as the Profoto for way less money.

      @@charminbaer2323 PREACH!!! Yes that is what I use. AD-200 Pro, X-2 trigger and a light stand with a 22' softbox. Walk around with it and shoot to my hearts content.
