- Street portraits are, by nature, on-the-go and impromptu, meaning, there's not always time or room in your bag for big and complex lighting setups. Instead of settling for natural light, learn how to capture stunning street portraits using the Profoto A2 and Beauty Dish, the perfect off-camera flash combo for photography on the go (in case security is lurking nearby).
In this video, Pye hits the streets of Santa Monica and walks through 3 creative, easy, and efficient one-light street portrait setups.

Pye, you're one of very few photographers on UA-cam who actually manage to use your model's name throughout the photoshoot. It sounds so much more respectful than other videos. And thanks for some great, simple lighting setups - very clearly explained.
always nice to give name and instagram
Much thanks! I like to keep a very respectful set and shoot. Glad you enjoyed!
I also dont like how photographers treat body parts like set pieces...
"Move the elbow", "THE?!"
"Move YOUR left elbow" is respectful.
Absolutely agree! 💞
Yay, Pye! You're back! 😎
Yes! I'll work on arranging my schedule so we can publish more to our own channel. Recently I've just been focused on publishing for others. I'll get back in the groove =)
Never thought to use the timer! Lol thank you for the tip, and i like the using a light tripod as a boom for thr flash! Thank you so much, will have to try in the future!
Awesome tips and technique! Thank you Pye and Kiara!
I love love the simplicity of this.
That Adobe Podcast audio. Sounds so good it almost seems fake. Spent most of the video seeing if the audio wasn’t synced, that I missed the whole point of the video. LOL
Wowsa, her body gets better every year you drag her into the alleys. Timeless unaging.
I am glad I bought profoto shares when such a beautiful subject is reflected in its light.
another gem as always love your videos straight to the point.
Great video Pye. I hadn't thought about setting the camera on a tripod and ME being the light stand. :D that is a great workflow when I don't have an assistant handy. Though this is obvious to most, I think it is still a good idea to callout that you are shooting in HSS. While most strobes these days are capable of HSS, still a good callout to make. Keep up the great work. Will be trying this setup out on my next session. Thanks Pye.
I've been a photographer for decades, but over the last few years, have not done much beyond events and setting up the full studio on location for stuff. Time to get more active again and really need to get out and shoot like I use to. Going to spend a little more time going through the videos here for some renewed inspiration.
Very helpful and instructive video. Thank you to both of you. ❤
Awesome work and beautiful model. It's great to see you back again!
Awesome video and instructions !! Just the way I'd like to shoot with one light especially outside !! Thanks a lot
broo this vid so good i subbed. so much knowledge in this video
Appreciate it!
Always inspired when i watch your tutorials.
I had fun on a photo shoot last night downtown that I used similar techniques and a fun mural we played around with too. Love your tutorials as always thanks for sharing.
Such a great and helpful video. So creative. Thanks very much
Whoaaaa game changer! 🙏🏾
Loved this!
Thanks for the inspiration, Great inspiration to shoot in the city...
The model is perfect, the explanation easy to understand . thank you .
I enjoy the depth and candor of your video tutorials. Some photographers seem so guarded as if they're sharing forbidden trade secrets. You clearly instruct with easy to follow steps. Thanks for your excellent work!
Thanks Tony, glad you enjoyed! Just trying to be me =)
Congratulations. I really liked the configurations that you have used in the use of flash and, above all, a single light.- Very instructive and creative.- At the same time, the editions give a bluish tone, it fits perfectly with the environment and the model's clothing .- Ten points.- Thank you very much.-
great tips pye! always learning something new from SLR lounge
You’re appreciated.
This was amazing great images
First time i came accross with your videos its very valuable, to the point, showcasing photography as profession, lighting, tools… thank you for the awesome content 🙏🏽 Subscribed
been awhile since I have been wanting to get back into photography. I LOVE the one light videos!
love this ....
nice one for this tips & soon i will trial 😍
Fabulous 👏👏👏😍
Great vid, learned some great tips🙏🏼
Brilliantly explained
Pye all topics are coveted as long as you have Kiara as your subject ❤️❤️
Pye = awesome!
Awesome work and Kiara is a super and cute model. I love it.
Really learning a lot from your portable one light setup series
You're so wonderful in teaching techniques
Great idea with the self timer to hold in place the flash!
I don't know what I'm most impressed about, the pictures and light or how you edited your audio!!!!
It's always a great informative, and inspiring video with Pye, its been a while, glad to see todays content. Think I made the mistake of buying a parabolic softbox to use when shooting outdoors, so a smaller style beauty dish will be my next purchase, as we chase the very rare sunny days here in the U.K.. As always, love the content you create and look forward to the next one.
Yay! I'm working to arrange my schedule so I can publish more to our own channel. Glad you dig!
Some good tips! For my quick travel setup I use the Godox AD100pro with the 28 in Angler Softbox. A much more affordable setup which should give you roughly same results. Maybe I'd throw a high quality ND filter on the lens so you don't have to use HSS and can keep the full power of the strobe.
man this was dope!!! I def need to get back on here doing photography BTS love your work,, def a supporter now
I bought A2 after watching your video. It's really compact and handy
Love your video
Great Video!
Awesome sir
that edited photo is insane! well done
Great video, as always, Pye! Perfect timing because I have a shoot just like this coming up next week. Also, thanks for providing something for those of us who are just out on the streets having fun with photography... Question: would an umbrella work almost as well as the beauty dish?
Nice video, thanks ! From Brazil
you teaching is the best way to learn photography.
Working with a girl like this who knows her angles certainly makes things a lot easier.
Great technique
I love Pi 😂he’s awesome
Loved the video, love her outfit and location. I started using a tripod a long time ago with medium format cameras and now even more with digital because all it tales is a little shake with 40 plus megapixels and you've got a out of focus shot.
That should cause motion blur not out of focus.
All versions were good but I especially loved the alley with compression in the image.
Also, it's almost not fair when your model is a natural. I mean...you can't get a bad image of her if you TRIED!
Well done, both of ya.
P.S. - would love to see a video on compression in your shots; different lenses and background to accentuate them. (one can always ask, right??)
Haha, so true. It's hard to get a bad shot of Kiara =)
Next time we're out, I'll try to do a compression video.
Your work is amazing. Could you please share the focus mode that you use? I’m still struggling getting all of my photos in focus.
Vraiment bien ce pied mobile :) j'utilise mais avec des passants :)
Always solid job and solid tips for our team!
That part about liking alleys and it sounding creepy was funny 😂
Nice information thanks..❤❤from india
I love your work!
What presets have you used in this session?
Master and Commander = Pye
that's hilarious i shot at that alley when i was just getting started, def a nice hidden spot in santa monica.
This is awesome how much does the light and light stand weight? This is such good idea. I want to give it a try
Actually, I like to use a 7" reflector or 16" metal beauty dish with a AD300 (Bowens adapter already mounted to strobe). Set up less than 5 minutes, no worries about wind.
Great job, I love the urban vibe of this shooting.
One question about the Beauty dish : using the diffuser is like using any kind of octobox or umbrella ? Moreover it takes some power out the flash.
I though beauty dish has special lighting effect especially on face. May be it's too hard to setup outside ?
great,
Nice setups.
Love the backpack. What brand is it?
Hi Pye thanks for your great content. You always make awesome vidéo🔥 i have a question for you. Im a solo photographer and i want a setup light and simple in my backpack. Do you like most this 24’’ softbox to a magsphere or magboune? Maybe one days can you make a video for a 24´´ sofbox vs the magmod système on location like this one🙂
Both systems are great. I'd say for portability, I'd go with the Profoto setup. The MagBox is awesome, setup is a snap. But it's rather large. So if you're traveling a lot, it's not going to fit into luggage easily. The Profoto system takes a bit longer to setup, but it's compact enough to collapse and go anywhere. So it's really a portability question, both are great.
Ciara is the bomb.. Also a great dancer.. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Check out the Angler Fastbox. They're very compact like that OCF system, except the Angler doesn't require assembly. I bought the 28" version, but they sell a 20" and 24" version if you need to be even more portable.
And now 32" to
Hello Pye the video is great. What K are you at k5500?
Great video, I'm curious why ISO50 ?
the light is a grand
Any question?? Kiara is single??? Love her ❤😂
Thank you for your videos!!
setup #2 I would move to the left, to get more of the building which is awesome and get rid of the crap on the left
How do you make that she is in focus with the timer
Could you do a similar video using an entry level camera like a T6.
Can you do the same with a speedlight?
whats the name of that lava mic
could this be accomplished with the V1?
You must have used HSS with you last two set-ups. Quick question: Do you set up HSS in the camera, the trigger or the strobe or all three?
Umm what mic are you using - the noise filtering is as amazing as the photography
the second setup's edited version looks like the model was just inserted in, since the model's lighting and the background is so different
There’s light spilling on to the wall. How can you avoid that and still have the same look?
Are you using high speed sync you are not saying I am thinking you are but if not how are you getting 1/1000 Shutter speed
Interesting that the flash works with 1/2500 sec. That‘s quite fast!!
I wanna know more about this too - I'm used to the old Nikon Speedlights (SB-700/800/900 line) paired with traditional Nikon DSLRs. They're limited to a 1/250th sync speed. Help me understand if this is completely eliminated with mirrorless!
Based in Paris. Coming from AlienBees, the Westcott is more accurate in color temp and stands better the heat. I am quite disappointed though as my fj400 just died: the battery is dead and there is no way to plug the power connector directly on the strobe: I had to buy a new battery (215€ in France), while the same flash without battery is just about 250€ with Godox (more user friendly)...
So yeah quite disappointed after just 2 years of light use of the fj400 😅
l colourgrading in photos
I don't know how you do it. I'd be freaking out shooting in front of those store fronts and all those people stopping and looking.
But as usual, you guys pull it off, you guys rock!
I'm in philly so you might have addicts or mentally ill people walk up to you.
Hah, this whole video sounds like it was done with a voiceover after the fact; it's almost too clear and "studio" sounding. Not really a complaint as good audio is overlooked by most youtubers, so it's just an observation.
agree - a bit too much on the lower end of the eq + feels like there's an aggressive vocal isolator plugin in use...but that's all just personal preference to me!
Excellent presentation!
I can not understand how I worked without modern chips. Now you can forget everything you knew about and admit that modern photographers are the most photographic photographers (google translate) in the history of photography. All dinosaur photos have sunk into oblivion (also Google translation). Well, it's time for me to collect mortal belongings on the road ...
Those are some very straight legs.
minuto 4:41 tremendo lente excelente flash y haces haces esooooo encima la editas en LR para arreglarla dejate de joder
bro your voice is mixed in a way that is like buried inside of my skull when i listen to it.. its honestly too much low and midtones. sounds like the mic is in your throat. just fyi. also love the vids
That water in an alleyway back in London would have a pungent smell of strong urine and a swarm of drug dealers doing all sorts of dodgy deals.
I won't risk it.
step nr 1: get a fit model who is okay with showing skin and taking partly sexual poses.
Why are you over edited ? It's not meaning street Portrait Lighting Setups.
