His judgeship knows this has the potential to lead to a Federal Court..The handcuffs, the jail jumpsuit, and emotional distress seem to meet the threshold for some US Code stuff.. The Chief judge is in firm possession of that reality..and trying to head that off...the rollout here will be interesting..

This judge had 0 right to do what he did for someone committing a BODILY FUNCTION which you call a CRIME. If she truly is unable to stay awake, what exactly do you want her to do for her to keep herself awake without being in “contempt”? A simple “leave the courtroom if you can’t stay awake” would have sufficed instead of needlessly escalating. Even if she hadn’t said what she said if she fell asleep again it would’ve been a lose-lose situation.
This only shows just how inhumane you are just like the judge.
Imagine a kid happens to have the stomach virus that day, and for whatever reason couldn’t stop passing gas, would it be right for a judge to interpret this as disrespect? Or would it be right for him to tell the kid to LEAVE and just sort their stuff out?

And some of our language was colorful. Amd we had such an effect on kids til we started taking trips to schols and colleges. And juvenile detention center. But these were kids on a dangerous path. But even these kids would not have been subject to public ridicule. Despite his good intentions that kid must now face ridicule and bullying from other kids and classmates. Ignorant comments like this are why certain black communities remain in unfavorable conditions. Especially Detroit. PLEASE!! I beg you, keep this perspective south of 8 mile.
Progressive/reasonable black adults understand responsibility, accountability and consequences we won't tolerate the BS. And while you at it stop the spiritual boogie man nonsense.

If he truly wanted to mentor this young woman he should have offered that from the very beginning instead of putting her in jail clothes and handcuffs. He reacted without knowing her situation. Had he approached the situation differently he could have learned what she was going through and possibly gotten her mom in touch with resources who could help them.

I don't understand the people who are trying to justify the judges actions and saying she was in contempt of court. They were on a field trip so it wasn't like court was actually in session. And to say she "mouthed" off or "sassed" him??? Like WTH. He is cocky and arrogant, and he was treating her like a criminal in his courtroom for falling asleep!!! He needs a good dose of humility and compassion. There is already distrust in underserved black & brown communities when it comes to the justice system and law enforcement. This situation could have went in a totally different direction. Have the bailiff tap her ask her to step into the hallway to get a glass of water or move around to wake herself up, but you chose the most traumatizing and humiliating ways to deal with it and say you're doing it as a form of tough love. SHE WASN'T THERE IN THAT CAPACITY "a-h*le.

If I was a woman, homeless and my child doesn’t have a bed to sleep in, I don’t think fake eyelashes, a tongue stud and a bling necklace would be high on my financial list.
