    Andy - that was so cool. I’ve never seen a wheel being built and now have an even greater appreciation for bike mechanics. One thing I will say, is that with your background music, I felt like it would be most appropriate if I had a single malt scotch or a snifter of cognac in hand! Keep up the great work. Love your channel!

    I find putting the heads out spokes in first makes it easier when putting heads in spokes last. Those crossing spokes go in much easier without having to weave through spokes on the opposite flange. Ali Clarkson has an excellent video on this. I'd follow Clarkson as I'd follow Brodie.

      Yeah, I've been using Ali's "step on the spoke crossings" pre-stressing technique ever since I saw it. Fast and easier on the hands than other methods.

    I’ve built a few wheels. I had the advantage of my first wheel set was built in a small class with a professional wheel builder (Jude Karstein at Sugar Wheelworks). One thing I do every time is use a nipple driver (NON-motorized!) to tighten each spoke until there’s approximately 1 thread still showing where the spoke enters the nipple. At that point then you go around with the spoke wrench and do a full turn on each spoke, then another…until you’re approaching tension and ready to start truing and balancing tension (I use a tesiometer.
    Being in a hurry is almost guaranteed to make the build take longer 😉

  • @mattgies
    @mattgies 28 днів тому +2

    I use the Problem Solvers Holy Driver to bring all the nipples to the same starting point. Variable depth setting flathead bit--you can use it in a drill but I usually spin it by hand. I usually have the tip sticking out about 3 mm to make sure there's no actual tension created yet. Also for a 3x wheel, you always want to count to the 4th hole from the logo in both directions to locate the spokes next to the valve hole in the rim.

    Nicely done! I've been building wheels as a hobby for 20 years, and have a 20 year old copy of The Bicycle Wheel by Jobst Brandt, 3rd edition.
    Wheelsmith's Spoke Prep is also part of all my builds, and I've also chosen Velocity rims for several builds in recent years. Currently planning two wheel sets around Shimano Ultegra 6500 hubs, with Velocity A23 front and A23 OC rear, with DT Swiss Competition spokes.
    Your mileage may vary: I do the inbound spokes first, and put a dab of axle grease on the nipples and/or spoke holes.
    I love your videos, keep up the great work you're doing!😁

      Look at Ali Clarkson's wheel building videos if you want what's probably the best instruction manual on wheel building that I've seen. He's an absolutely phenomenal trials rider too. There are engineering reasons for all the steps - especially stress relieving after building, but you don't need to understand the engineering to follow the instructions.
      Aligning the logo on the hub so it can be read through the valve hole is the gold standard for a textbook wheel build, but there's no structural benefit.

      Tell the truth 😃, A dear friend said let me build your wheels and you will be straight. I bought a Terra with the same money it would have taken for custom made wheels. He was wanting to fix up a TRC that is flawless, ( maybe the wheels are not too of the line, but I'm just a average rider ) Are custom wheels worth three grand. I'm about bike poor but I want custom wheels. What would you do? Sorry about putting you on the spot but you comment seems to me you know what you are talking about. May God bless you.

    I love building wheels. Like you, I do it very infrequently and I think that makes it something to look forward to. A couple things I do…which others may want to try.
    1. I lace the rim and then spin all the nipples until they cover the threads. Then I go around the wheel and do like 4 turns per spoke, then two more, then 1 more until it barely gets tension. Then I add 1/2 turn until they all ping when I pluck them.
    Then before actually truing i get them all to the same pitch by adding 1/4 turn to the loose (plang sound) and if I need to remove 1/4 turn from the overnight spokes (ting sound).
    ***should have watched it all before commenting. You do the wheel banjo too
    Finally I true them…pretty unscientific but it works.

    Nice wheel building process. I am not a wheel builder myself but something tells me the equal torque screwdriver strategy did not work because the initial spokes are going to be much more screwed in than the subsequent ones. You may arrive at the same tension, but the wheel will be oval. Could be wrong - just my common sense thinking.

    Do wheel manufacturers still use reinforcing eyelets? I found a 1980s georgena terry road bike 6 years ago next to a dumpster. Removed tires and tube only to discover spoke eyelets ehich i thought was the coolest thing. Ended up parting out suntour cyclone 7000 groupsets on eBay and selling wheels and frameset locally. Another neat thing about bike was that front wheel was 24 inch with 27 inch rear.

    I'm personally not too worried about the strength of aluminum nipples, BUT I use brass on all my wheels because I have seen too many aluminum nipples horribly corroded after a few rainy rides. Not worth having to pay so much attention to something that should be low-maintenance on a good handbuilt wheel just to save a few grams

    • @exothermal.sprocket
      @exothermal.sprocket 28 днів тому +1

      @@daniellarson3068 Perhaps that's the case, if for any reason the rim is struck by a rock or hard edge and bends up, ripping the brass nipple from the threads of the spoke. The wheel assembly is supposed to act as a unit, sending energy from the tire to the to hub, through the wheel and spokes. There's enough give in the system to hopefully prevent a nipple from ripping through the wheel (for example). I've seen stainless steel nipples used on other wheel builds, where durability and corrosion concerns are the most prominent.

    • @daniellarson3068
      @daniellarson3068 28 днів тому

      @@exothermal.sprocket I'm no wheel builder so I don't know about this stuff, but I just looked on Amazon and saw the brass nipples cost more than the normal carbon steel ones. I found stainless spokes, but not the nipples. I found another outlet called Buchanan's that sold motorcycle stainless spoke nipples for $1.62 for each nipple. Something basic escaped me. I used to work at a power plant. Folks had problems with stainless steel threads galling. So, I guess stainless to stainless threads may be bad for bikes too.
